SO FUN!! As a gamer, this was my dream workout. I actually had this place pique my interest as I biked quickly across market street and saw the words "VR workout" pass by. Does it work? Yes it does. You come in and can have a free into trial. They have a 10 minute intro video and then you get let into your booth. The workout itself is a combo of strength row, squat, and chest press (you unlock more later) and it's good that they encourage you to do more reps by adding multipliers on the damage you deal! The game is a tower defense PvP game where you play a CPU! They also encourage you to take breaks by having a max number of reps you can do before you have to switch. I was skeptical at first but I don't like strength training and this made me do 332 reps. Would try and come again! I love the fitness gaming space and this is a unique experience. Good to try for free if you're unsure! Thanks Joey for a warm welcome!

Never in my life have I looked forward to going to the gym. I've not stepped into a gym for years and when I tried this out, not only did I want to come back, but I was willing to pay to exercise. The machine and game is custom made and it's relatively fun. There are still some bugs in the game but the staff are very friendly and are happy to help out whenever something goes wrong. Not that it does very often. Also, free towels, showers, lockers, and protein powder means I can go to the gym without having to bring anything. Even if this were just a normal gym, the facilities are very clean and pleasant, unlike some other gyms I've been to.

This was the coolest experience ever! I had so much fun working out and playing the game at the same time. I really broke out a sweat and felt the burn doing all the reps. I would definitely come back. The staff are super nice and like their website says, they don't bug you about signing up for a membership or anything. The inside is so clean and cool. They have free protein powder and drinks to buy. They have a shower area and other free accessories to use such as disposable combs and dry shampoo. I loved everything about this place!

If I have to pick my favorite places in SF, Black Box would definitely be on the list. The addition of VR and gaming to workouts is brilliant. I have so much more fun here than at my usual gym and end up really pushing myself, a lot harder than I would if I was in my own. There’s always a completion going on and you get great stats after each workout. I can both see and feel results in real time, which motivates me to come back and mix up my usual routine. You also you a room and machine all to yourself that constantly adjusts and pushes you limits; way better than your typical gym experience, even if you are doing the same reps. The staff is super friendly and helpful too. The down side. There are only 8 exercises that the machine is configured for, and nearly all of them involve grip or upper body. So I do still need to go to other gyms and studios to get a full body workout. So it hasn’t fully replaced my routine, but certainly made it more fun. The monthly fee is super reasonable as though. The AI takes a while to actually learn how strong you are, and sometimes overestimate. So I usually find my self either solidly winning against my opponent or loosing badly, not much in between. So definitely some improvements needed but overall my experience with Black Box has been stellar and leveled my my strength and enjoyment of my workouts.

It’s not a gym, it is GAME, that makes you stronger! Best experience ever, can’t wait each new session to try new tactics, or get new one rep max record! And it’s been months, still super engaged, still super intense. Definitely worth try, and if you like, it would change you. I’m not sure I would ever enjoy regular gym now ;)

Are you a gamer? Do you like gyms? If both answers are yes than this is THE place to go! I've been lucky to be one of the first to try this out. To start, the staff is very friendly and will help you set up for your first experience. Second, once you in your personal space and put the VR headset on, you can feel the adrenaline pumping because of how awesome it is! It was my first time with a VR headset on and it's just amazing! The interaction with the machine and how the "game" feels is just WOW. If you can go try it out now! The membership might be a little bit too the expensive side but you will come back every week for more.. I'm from Europe so I'll have to wait a long time to do this again but it's my life goal to come back!!! CES award and 5 stars well deserved!!

Love these workouts. It's pushed my motivation buttons in a way I haven't found in a long time. I always look forward to getting back there and pumping up my XP and getting to the next boss. I get a little frustrated with the app, which is still in its early days and has some bugs. But I'm confident this will improve, and it certainly doesn't stop me from pushing to get here thrice a week.

This is the best gym if you want to get some serious exercise done and enjoy a fun workout! The gym crew is also extremely friendly and helpful. The facility is well equipped with a warm up area, free pre and post workout. I highly recommend joining black box if you are a gamer and enjoy a good challenge.

I had THE BEST experience at Black Box VR! The General Manager, Aaron, was kind and thorough as he walked me through my first workout. I LOVED how fun the exercise was and time flew by! The facilities are super nice, too! Very clean, open, airy, and great complementary amenities like showers and optional supplements. There’s even a pre/post workout area with bikes, resistance bands, and yoga mats. I started with a free trial (which is SUPER COOL) and I 100% think this will be my new workout spot! 30 minutes was perfect for me! Enough to get embarrassingly sweaty. Thank goodness for a private room! 😂 I’ll be back and I’m bringing more people with me!! Thanks for an amazing experience Black Box VR 😊

Awesome! I tend to get bored during workouts very easily, and this kept me going throughout. Definitely close to exhaustion a couple times but it's good at making that *just* the point where you need a couple more hits, and then you get some story as a rest and reward. You have choice in what moves you do which I think helps, and can immediately see the effects on screen. And the setup outside the game is great, own room, towels, showers, refreshments, very friendly staff. Looking forward to it opening up in more places! :)

Outperforms a traditional gym in every possible way. If you are looking for serious fitness and fun and NONE of the b.s. of a traditional gym, this is the spot. I've never felt so accepted and free to be myself at a gym. Truthfully, I only went in because of the 14 day free trial... And it's a legit free trial; they don't charge your credit card and you can quit via one click on their app if it's not for you. I thought it would be a fun novelty, but probably not a "real" workout. Wow...was I ever wrong! No matter your fitness level, the tech scales to meet you where you are and you'll see improvement quickly. "Game-changer" gets thrown around loosely, but seriously, this is the real deal. Best of all, the Hero Trainers here are all incredibly cool and nice people! A special shout-out to Abbie, who taught my wife and I how to play the game, safely use the equipment, and answered all our questions! She makes the gym feel like our home away from home!

I love how they gamified exercising. Haven't had such a seemless experience before. If you love those single player / phone games give this a try for sure - you get the satisfaction from the gamification but more importantly it is something you can do *all* the time guilt free! Imagine if all those hours spent clicking cookies translated into strength gains! Try to beat my 1 month streak :D Also feel free to add me! My username is Ry

I like that we get our own booths in this day and age of covid. I also really enjoy the ai system for weight control, it really pushes you to lift heavy without any spotters. The only downside is the limited exercises we can do which is 6 lifts and 2 burnouts. Hopefully they add in more exercises in the future!

Love this place. I never could get into going to the gym regularly but battling in the arena is way better than staring at a wall and feeling awkward in front of tons of strangers. Staff is amazing and very friendly. I'm hoping they will expand into more cities so I don't have to break my streak every time I leave town for a few days!

Had the opportunity to bring myself and family members in to Black Box VR fitness for a trial run with Steven Bartolotti of Black Box VR providing the tour. Steven made us feel at home, treated us like special guests and provided a lot of individualized attention and support. The equipment was easy to use, and the integration of AI, as Steven explained it, helped to adjust to just the right amount of resistance. The cable machines felt smooth and were well maintained, a pleasure to work with. These machines have a big range, going from very light to really packing in some serious resistance.

😐 My first visit in an American Bouldering Gym and a rather disappointing one. Not sure about the 4.8 Stars. I think the gym invests more time in the wrong places.
