Pronounced "she-oak", this Singapore English or Singlish superlative word means tasty or delicious, referring to food; satisfying or pleasing, referring to an experience. The food was so good and authentic that the restaurant should rename itself “Damn Shiok” because it deserves to double up on the superlatives!

As a Singaporean who hasn't been home for 2 years, this was a really special meal for me. It was a pleasure to introduce my colleagues to my home cuisine! I did wish the service would've been a bit more personal and the table was left uncleared for a long time, but I'm giving 5 stars because the food was great and the experience was overall 100!

I've been here a few times prior to the pandemic since I had worked close by. It's been a few years since I had come since it's a bit far for me. This is my favorite place to go for Laksa so I had to order that and it did not disappoint. Tasted like just what I remembered. The price is also not too expensive especially for lunch. We also ordered the roti and another noodle dish. Both were good but my main dish was the laksa. I can't really find a good restaurant that makes laksa close to my neighborhood. I definitely would go back even if it is a long drive.

Nice and clean restaurant on a quiet street. Tried a variety of appetizers: the curry sauce for the rotti was excellent, lettuce cups and also pork over shredded lettuce. Three people in the party ordered beef or pork ribs with bell peppers and they complemented the dishes, the portions looked very appetizing too. I asked the server for a recommendation and ordered "the most popular" combo of egg and thin rice noodles with shrimp, squid and calamari. The taste of the noodles was okay, but the quality of the seafood (tiny pieces and as if coming from a frozen economy pack) and the overall dish appeal were underwhelming and didn't match the rest of the experience. A coworker also brought bottles of wine, because when checking on the wine selection upfront, received "we have red and white". Overall, it may be fine for a takeout, but be selective.

I’ve travelled from SF to Shiok kitchen multiple times now and their Hokkien mee and fried carrot cake (not on the menu so you gotta ask the boss himself for it) are really authentic :) As a Singaporean myself, I highly recommend!

A cozy Asian eatery that seats 25-30 people, offering exceptionally delicious and authentic dishes. It has a few outdoor seating also. I savored the flavors of roti prata, rice pot, and mee goreng. Highly recommended for those looking to experience Singaporean cuisine. Free Parking available in the neighborhood.

Only tried the Laksa curry noodle. Pretty good but could be better if the noodle is chewier, and add some vegi or frangment leaves for enhance or lower the salt of broth.

I was so excited to find this place! Turns out they've been around for decades, so that goes to show they're a staple in the neighborhood. We came here around 7:30PM on a Saturday, and parking was really easy. It was great that they had a good crowd still at this house. We got seated within 5 minutes! For dinner, we had: - Singapore Chicken Rice (aka Hainan Chicken Rice) - Duck Garlic Noodles - Roti Prata - Chicken Satay The chicken rice wasn't super stand out. The chicken was cooked well and the rice was good, but the sauce and overall flavor was a 4/5! The duck garlic noodles were super delicious! I stopped ordering garlic noodles from restaurants for a while, because it usually clumps up when the noodles chill. But we had a taste of the noodles right when they were served and again after trying everything else. I loved that they stayed chewy, bouncy, and didn't clump up. 5/5! The roti prata was soft, crispy, and toasty with a delicious curry sauce. I loved that they separate the roti into small pieces, since it's usually too hot to handle at first. 5/5! The chicken satay was fantastic on its own. The sauce that came with it was okay, but I didn't feel like it improved the chicken. 4.5/5! Can't wait to come back! I want to try the Beef Rendang next time (and get more garlic noodles).

This is one of our favorite Singaporean food restaurants in the Bay Area - the quality is consistently good and prices are very reasonable. The most authentic dishes in my opinion are the Hokkien mee, char Kway Teow and Hor Fun. The menu is extensive. Go early to avoid crowds and the wait for food can be long. Highly recommended.

Went here for the dungeness chili crab and was so disappointed when we were told we had to order it 24 hours in advance. There’s is no indication of that on the online menu or the printed menu in the restaurant. Staff was kind. Duck garlic noodles were good

Get their value lunch set! I've eaten Food in Singapore, but it doesn't have quite the umami flavor I was looking for. The Hokkien Noodle in this restaurant comes with a small cut lemon which really pulls out the fragrance of the gravy. Note* - distinct area serve and cook Hokkien Noodle differently. Horfun in the menu refers to Wat tan hor or (Hua Dan He). Anyway, the portion is decent and the waitress is friendly. Worth a try but of course, you'll need to go to Singapore or Malaysia to try their local food to mesmerize the unique flavor(the umami I was after).

Cute little Singaporean Restaurant in Menlo Park. Limited seating in a cozy setup. History: Established in 1999. Began as a small 16 seat hole-in-the-wall on the quiet part of Laurel Street in San Carlos, moved to Menlo Park soon after. Everything we ordered here was at their best taste. We experimented with some items which we haven’t had earlier. Sambal Kangkong - Spicy tangy appetizer, though spinach stalks were little chewy. Okra option is available too. Felt $17 a tad expensive for that. Chicken Satay - On sweeter side, expected it to have little spice. Hor Fun - Full of deliciousness, go for it if you are an egg lover. Soupy eggy flat noodle delight. Laksa - Show stopper of the day. If you like aroma and taste of dried shrimp and into soupy noodles, this is for you. Can’t stop eating it. We ordered Lychee Spritz and Lime Juice as coolers. Owners were amazing. We just loved the hospitality. They were so friendly and understanding. We made a mess at the table while dining with kid. They switched the table for us with a smile. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Good service, reasonable prices and decent selection of menu options. Portions we're on the smaller side, with the exception of the noodles. Unfortunately the noodles we're overcooked and gummy. Everything else was great: roti, string beans, and chicken -- tasty and good presentation. And the vegetables still we're crisp.

Very underwhelming. I’m from Singapore and know how this food should taste. We tried a variety of things and none of them lived up to expectations

Pre fixed menu was a good value with a variety of dishes, plus dessert and two drinks. The food was, however, mediocre. The only dish that stood out was the dipping sauce for the roti canai. Duck garlic noodle has good flavor but the duck was not tender. The complementary margarita was disappointing, I wish I had switched it to something else. We ordered mee soup, chicken broth served with yellow noodle and seafood. Unfortunately, the soup was tasteless... Overall the whole experience was a disappointment. If you happen to love this place, it's because you haven't tried Ipoh Garden in Milbrae. If you have gone to Ipoh Garden, you probably wouldn't come back to Shiok. At least I know I won't return to Shiok.

Consistently good food and service. I’ve been here many times for lunch We usually get the roti Prata for apps And my son gets the hainan chicken and I usually get the nonya fish dish with coconut rice . Although ,my favorite dish is the Hor Fun which is chow fun with mixed veggies meat and egg gravy. For drinks we shared the honey ginger tea Parking is street and a lot nearby . Could be hard to find parking during peak dining hours

Pretty good, nice space, very nice owners. The flavors weren't like WOW powerful but each dish was enjoyed. We were with a couple of vegetarians so we had to order that way, but I bet the meat dishes might hold a bit more surprise.

  • 5/5 somit b. 2 years ago on Google
Food is good, they have plenty of options for the vegetarians too. Staff is pleasant and super courteous, the only thing they can do is remodel the ambience but that's fine. Location and the place is perfect to dine in with your families and friends.

Crispy Five spice roll is usually our choice of appetizer. Saute Green beans is also good. Crispy tofu is also good . It is crispy outside but.as smoooth as panna cotta inside...melts in your mouth. For dessert try the black glutinous rice in palm sugar with coconut cream.

I was born in Malaysia and am pretty familiar with Singaporean food (they're somewhat similar). We ordered Laksa, Beef Rendang and Roti Prata. We enjoyed Laksa the most. The flavor was rich and the ingredients used were quite authentic.

  • 5/5 Christian M. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent Singaporean food that reminds me of a non-humid hawker center. The Sambal Green beans were perfect, the Malay style BBQ prawns brought me back and the duck noodles were amazing. An excellent selection from Singapore in the Bay Area.

  • 5/5 Bob L. 1 year ago on Google
Delicious Singaporean food. The five spice roll was freshly fried and was lightly crispy with a bouncy filling. I also enjoyed the laksa which was full of shrimpy goodness.

  • 5/5 Kenneth N. 1 year ago on Google
Authentic Singapore establishment serving great Singapore local fares. Tried the Char Kway Teow and Hokkien Mee. It was really really great! For the price, the portion could have been bigger. But no complains here because the portion is also authentically Singapore. Will definitely return!

  • 3/5 Aloha X M. 1 year ago on Google
My rating is for overall but the Hokien Mee deserves ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but the rest is really nothing to write home about. I also don’t know why this place always gives out dried limes and lemons! I mean we are in california, where do you even find dried citrus ? Also don’t order the string beans, it looks like someone ate 75% of the order and then served it. They shouldn’t be so superdupa stingy with the portions of string beans, it’s only 1.99 per pound at cost even with inflation. Go for the hokkien mee and don’t bother with the rest. They always forget to give hot sauce upon request too🙄

Hainan chicken rice tastes average; Mee Goreng not bad, never tried this dish before!

  • 4/5 Chi Shan W. 10 months ago on Google
As a Singaporean: the chicken flavoured rice was pretty legit. Good curry chicken too. Only issue was that the cereal prawns don't taste like the Singaporean ones - way too sweet and dry and prawns weren't as good. Overall worth a try and would come back to try more dishes!

The five spice roll is great, the flavor of clay pot and Laksa noodle is pretty mild.

I have lived in Singapore for 20 years. The food at this place is not authentic. They take shortcuts and miss out on key components for the entrees.

Best Singaoorean place in the Bay Area (coming from a fellow Singaporean!) owner was so nice and kind too. Thank you ?

  • 4/5 Max P. 5 years ago on Google
Considering the general scarcity of Singaporean restaurants, you could do a lot worse than Shiok. The beef rendang could have been more tender but did retain the authentic taste. On the other hand, the claypot rice was quite bland- not usually a sauce/spice guy but this dish really could have used some.

  • 5/5 Sebastian K. 4 years ago on Google
Now don't get me wrong - this place wouldn't survive in Singapore. People would just go next door to a restaurant where the roti prata is fluffier and less dry, where the Hainanese chicken rice is more succulent, and the chili crab is more flavorful. But this isn't Singapore, choice for Singaporean food is limited, and this is one of the better places, so...

Disappointing Laksa and Chicken Rice :(

  • 3/5 Shweta K. 4 years ago on Google
The food taste is quite terrible to be honest. They got a 3 star purely based on decent service, otherwise it would be closer to 1. We had the Claypot and Singaporean Chicken, which were both quite tasteless. The one thing that tasted good was the Roti Prata, which you would get for much cheaper in any Indian restaurant. The tea is like Indian tea too, and for $6 a cup, it’s quite an up sale. Definitely not coming back, but also, I’m sure Singaporean food tastes better than this.

  • 5/5 Elena L. 4 years ago on Google
5 stars for the seafood hor fun alone - was amazingly authentic and had that wok hei flavour (which is really important for someone who's actually singaporean)!! But my friends had the chicken rice and it was apparently not that great

Made a reservation on yelp. Arrived 10 mins early and got to seat at the door. Hello, the restaurant wasn't full at all and we were not walk-in... the overhead light was way too bright and gave me headache. Asked to switch table and then seated at the back by the kitchen. Bad customer service to begin. We lived in Singapore for 4 and 8 years respectively so we know what constitutes SG food without the Malay or Indonesian twist. 1. Roti Prata ? close enough. 2. Singaporean Hokkien Mee ?too wet but acceptable. 3. Nasi Lamak ? no ajar, no ikan bilis, rice was too wet, peanuts not fried and tossed with salt, and the hard boil egg was tasteless. The only thing true to SG standard is the sambal. 4. Sambal Kankong ? should be only sambal sauce and the ong choy... why there's so much basil, red onion and red pepper in this plate? Not enough sambal and the portion was pathetic. 5. Nonya fish (too shock when seeing the plate and forgot to take a photo)... Don't waste your money, please do not order. If you want real Singapore food in the bay area, go somewhere else.

The restaurant was quite empty, but we were asked if we have a reservation several times. When we said no, they seated us at the back of the restaurant, maybe because we had a child? The food was over priced but tasted average. I don’t think we’ll visit again.
