Beautiful architecture! An historic landmark in San Francisco. It was originally built in 1922. Here you can see foreign films, repertory cinema, film festivals and special first run presentations. The theater also has a large stage for live performances and other celebrations.

Loving the events here lately! But the seats are falling apart & there's not nearly enough bathrooms for sold out shows (make sure you use the restroom before a line forms!).. I hope they are allowed to renovate soon. Concessions include beer, wine, cocktails, & coffee at most events. As well as popcorn & limited types of candy.

Just saw the premier of The Irishman here. As a lifelong movie fan, this is among my favorite movie theaters I've ever been to. It has that awesome retro feel that you get at small town movie theaters, but the difference is that this one is located right in The Castro, one of the most fun and vibrant neighborhoods of the city, and that its capacity is absolutely massive - it can seat a whopping 1,400 people! There is excellent sound quality, the screen is very big, and the seats are reasonably comfortable. The interior design is beautiful. Tips: come here early, especially if you're coming to a movie's opening night, as there are no assigned seats and the line for concession and even the bathrooms can get ridiculously long before a sold-out screening. You can (and should) buy tickets online to make sure you get in. And finally, unlike most AMC theaters, the movies here start almost exactly on time - maybe 5-10 minutes after the scheduled start time. So aim to be here 15-30 minutes early if you want to get snacks / use the bathroom / secure the best seats in the house.

Art deco, classic movies, a Time when the big screen was King. If you are looking for IMAX this is not the place for you. The Castro theater offers a time for a person to step back to enjoy those black and white films. The Hughes the colors of a panavision can only be enjoyed a screen of this dimension.

Cool, beautiful, historic theater with queer showings. Saw a queer film fest movie as well as a drag pageant (by Grace Towers!) here. It's an iconic street spot with solid programming!

Beautiful ornate theater. The lights inside looked so pretty. Reminded me of working at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Historic theater with current shows.

This place is incredible. Beautiful inside and out! The movie we went to had an organist come out and play before the show, very cool. I appreciated the dancing before the movie played. They had many seats, chairs for sitting. It was a nice place to sit and enjoy a show.

What a classic old school theatre, love the signage and the box office. Too bad it wasn’t open when we were there.

This historic theater is gorgeous. My son and I love attending the Movies for Maniacs screenings. The host, Jesse, has an infectious passion for the films he shows and it's been really fun experiencing movies we wouldn't normally seek out. The staff is also wonderful ❤️

I love these old classical theaters. It's beautifully restored. The acoustics were so good that it was easy to hear what everybody was saying.I just like looking at movies on the big screen.

It's a lovely place, seats a little small but expected for it's age. My 4 instead of 5 stars is due to having very inadequate restroom facilities, especially if you are disabled. I was also, as a transgender person, surprised and offput by the gendering of the restrooms "ladies" and "gentlemen". I look more female presenting and when I tried to go to the "gentleman's" restroom the, I assume well meaning, staff were quick to stop me and instruct me that the ladies restroom was across the other way. As a Genderqueer person in the heart of Castro, where I'd expect to be safe with this issue it was... a real let down and made me very uncomfortable to put it midly. Please consider somehow having more facilities, especially for disabled people, please consider having less gendered signage, and Please, PLEASE, do some sensitively training with your staff around gender, transness, and state and local laws around restroom use. Anyone of any presentation can use any restroom. Castro Theatre staff of all places should know that. Thank you.

Old movie palace from the 1920s that hosts film revivals, concerts, and stage shows. (I've been here twice for the 12+ hour "Day of Silents" organized by the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.)There are good restaurants, cafes and coffee bars near by if you want to eat before or after a show.

A beautiful old school movie theatre that shows one movie at a time. Right before the movie starts, a organist plays music to get everyone in the mood. The theatre has a balcony and it is a nice size theatre. They have a very small concession area. Using muni, it's very easy to get to when you get off at the Castro stop.

Classic San Francisco movie theater. If you haven't been, please consider visiting this wonderful theater. You can see current films, cult classics, and camp classics. You can also catch spectacular drag movie events via Peaches Christ and the hottest drag performers from Rupaul's Drag Race. It's well worth the trip.

Are you looking for an exceptional movie to watch but it is not interesting and always too long? Well I know just the solution, watch this short animated film Purl. Purl will be worth your while for it has purposeful character development, a clever soundtrack and unique cinematography. Both Purl and the other men are special in their own ways to this short film, they both develop a lot as characters. After Purl changed herself, she also made the other men realize that it was important to include others no matter what. While some people think that the colors played the biggest role in the movie, I think it was the music that made each scene very powerful and come to life. Every single little sound really made the movie happen. The next time you want to watch an interesting movie, all you need to do is watch this short film, Purl. This short film is a very powerful movie. It can not only give a spectacular animation, overall it can also give you purposeful character development, clever soundtrack and unique cinematography. Make sure to watch Purl on Disney + or YouTube in your free time!

Beautiful space, love the organ. The balcony is too tight to sit in, and of course the infamous seats. It's a great space, but they could work on letting people in. There's no reason to have such long lines.

Beautiful historical landmark building. The interior is clean and the audience is quiet during the film. The picture and sound quality are excellent.

Beautiful venue. I've been here a few times for the Moth Grandslam event (a story-telling contest). I'd highly recommend checking out the Moth, but I also recommend coming to the Castro Theatre for any event. It's very centrally located near Market Street, and it's right by the muni stop. The Theatre itself is spacious with vintage architecture. Really cool to be in an older theatre that has been so well taken care of.

The Castro Theatre is now only available for private functions, so we were disappointed when we weren't allowed to look around inside. Still a great area to visit though, I would highly recommend visiting The Castro. Lots of cute little book shops that also sell candles, gimmick toys etc. Most places are dog friendly too.

I feel blessed every time I step foot in here. I can’t believe this place is 100 years old. Thanks for still being here

Went there in person once. The theatre has great atmosphere and plays lots of classic movies. The staff was nice and passionate about their work. However, they can really improve their website and contact information. There is NO WAY to find any film schedule online. Their official website doesn’t have a film schedule but only show schedule. I left a comment on their twitter but no one replied. And the phone number is NOT in service. Hope they can make movies more reachable to audience!

The most beautiful theater in the SF Bay Area! This week the SF International Film Festival is happening! Family film shorts this morning…on a BIG screen!

We saw The Moth here. This theater had very good acoustics and snack bar. The seats are very comfortable and gallery helps get a good view no matter which seat. Love this theater. Also a great neighborhood. Lots of good restaurants and places to grab a snack or a drink.

It's a beautiful historic theater that even has an organ that someone plays before films. For an older theater seats are surprisingly pretty comfy although it's no reserved seat recliner.

Great movie, weird cashier. When I would ask for an item, the cashier would list his favorites. If I choose an item he didn't list, he would ask why? It was just odd. Again, great movie....
