So much potential, but... This place is beautiful, but it's all show and little substance. I ate here twice - just because I so wanted to like it, but frankly three stars is generous. Out of three dishes, one was good. A pasta with meat dish was actually a pasta in search of meat dish. There may have been 15 grams (1/2 ounce) of meat - the rest was all noddles. The coke I ordered came in a glass overflowing with ice, and perhaps 2 ounces of coke. I assume the bar has a soda gun as they didn't bring the bottle, nor did the waiter ever come back to ask if I wanted a refill (or another for ~$3). This matches the martini I ordered on my next visit: I forget the exact cost but it was ~$10-12 for maybe a half-ounce of gin. At least I assume there was some gin in there somewhere - maybe it was just expensive cold water? The lamb shank was acceptable, but not really interesting or special. The highlight was the red snapper appetizer - not so much for the fish which was small and a little overcooked, but the sauces on the plate where actually terrific. Service is mostly bad (see above about the coke), but there was one waiter who was quite good. The location is beautiful and I so wanted to like this restaurant, but when viewed from the quality of the meal in comparison to the price, this restaurant is just average. I expect it needs a new manager who focuses more on customers having a great experience with terrific food and less on pinching every colones. And now that I think about it - both times I went (normal lunch and dinner hours), the place was almost completely empty. Perhaps that says it all...

Other upscale hotels in the area have the customer supply a list of guests you would like to have, and require them to provide ID in the event they arrive. Absolutely no where in the terms and conditions during the online booking process does it state this. There is a small section stating unregistered guests can be removed from the premises under certain circumstances due to behavior, this implies that you can register guests with the hotel. With a non-refundable cancellation policy it comes to a big surprise to find this out when spending $230 or more per night. I stay in San Jose very frequently and have a lot of friends and family who I like to treat when I am in San Jose. It is a major disappointment and the only thing preventing me from booking this hotel every time I come. I am now having to book a separate place to entertain friends and family in the area.

A beautiful hotel very close to downtown San Jose and the museums in the area. The restaurant on site is the best we went to in Costa Rica, highly recommend getting a meal there. Staff was wonderful, accommodations were modest in size but very comfortable.

This is such an incredibly elegant hotel experience. The restaurant is probably the most fancy place I’ve ever dined; I was in complete awe of the architecture and the decor. The food was simply decadent with the best coffee ice cream I’ve ever had. Our room is quaint and cozy with a small garden and fountain outside our window. The employees at the front desk have been incredibly kind and helpful, encouraging me to practice Spanish when we are interacting. There is a gorgeous garden and lavish jacuzzis as well as a gym and a lending library. This is such a fantastic place to stay! I loved it here! We stayed here for our first night in Costa Rica. What a lovely little oasis in the middle of bustling San Jose. Our room was very comfortable, surrounded by greenery, and quiet. The mini bar and breakfast were included - which was appreciated, especially when tired and starting out our trip. The restaurant which is in an open air courtyard in the center of the hotel is truly lovely. The food was delicious and the staff was very kind. Would definitely stay here again!

This is such a cute warm place, a converted old Victorian house, combined with several others. Staff are warm and courteous. Our rooms was so pleasant, peaceful and comfortable - old stained wood and furniture, with an attached little outdoor sitting garden/water fountain. Food at the restaurant was decent but expensive and not as overwhelmingly satisfying.

Lovely hotel with friendly staff, though on the night we arrived, 9 pm Saturday, the person on reception told us there was nowhere to get a beer everything was closed, we ignored him and found lots of places. And the food is truly dreadful. So lovely place to stay and a 30 minute walk from the city centre.

It an oasis of calm comfort in the midst of San Jose. It's like staying in really nice victorian home. It's ideal for couples or families with older kids. The staff are wonderful. La Sabana is a few blocks away and a great place for a jog. Use the pedestrian bridge to get over the busy street next to the park. It's a short taxi or Uber ride to the museums and markets. Uber was very cheap.

Such a beautiful hotel but the worst service ever. All the concierges are very rude and do not wanna help you with anything. Sure, the room is a bit small but it is beautiful, well kept, and there's even tasty purified water from the room tap! Perfect place to de-stress. Staff was super helpful via email communication before we even arrived, helping to arrange transport, a more accessible room for the older folks in our party, making dinner and tour reservation. My wife and I stayed here for the last few days of our honeymoon while we waited to catch our flight. I am very glad we chose to stay here. The hotel itself is beautiful. We stayed in a patio room and it was glorious! The patio space was amazing and it was great to have some outside space, with a controlable water foundation. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful. Organising our Covid tests home for us , the medic even came to the hotel to conduct the test. The hotel restaurant was excellent and I would highly recommend visiting during your stay. The hotel itself is about 15 minutes walk from the city centre, so I would not class this as a city centre hotel. However San José is not the prettiest city so you're not losing anything from the hotels location. I would note there is a nice Spanish restaurant just across the road and a supermarket a short walk away. The only issue I had was the WiFi signal was quite poor in our room and would drop out in certain places which was a bit disappointing. Overall I highly recommend this hotel.

This place has been around for several decades and it is one of the best all around hotels in the Central Valley, and probably the only truly good option in the Paseo Colon area. The restaurant is top notch. Don’t miss the macadamia crusted sea bass.

I booked a table for yesterday at 9:30, service was kind, and prompt, was on a date and saw the croque madame and we were starving and ordered it. It was served with supermarket white bread (it looked and tasted like Bimbo artesano) . If one is expected to pay $18 USD croques one would expect a little more effort than cheap white bread. The wine list is extensive and across the price range from $30 to over $300. The rooms are spacious and well presented. Having a drink at the bar is a must do and the dinner our friends had was one of the best of our trip. It’s someplace you should stay at for a couple of days to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Grano de Oro Hotel is a beautiful hotel. The architecture and interior design is unique and sophisticated. We drove past and were immediately greeted by someone wanting to help us park (which we really appreciated!). He helped us carry our bags up and was very helpful and polite. The check in (and check out) was easy and they let us check in a little early which we appreciated. The room was comfy and there was a complimentary mini bar with drinks and snacks which was a nice touch. The restaurant is beautiful and the food and drinks were good (although we would have liked to see more vegetarian options on the menu). It is an easy walk into the town from the hotel and the hotel has a secure car park. My husband was unwell whilst we stayed at Grano de Oro and at about 8:30pm we were in our room and this extremely loud music began playing (with a really heavy bass). We waited for about an hour and began to panic that it would go on all night so we called reception. We felt the reception were very unhelpful. I explained that my husband was unwell and that he really needed a good night's sleep and they essentially responded saying 'this music is from another property, it is not our problem' and so when I suggested we get moved to another room to help him sleep, the man on reception scoffed and said 'it would be the same everywhere in the hotel'. He then went on to say that it should be finished soon (which suggested it happened regularly) and luckily it did stop shortly after this but we felt the experience let the service down and not something you would expect from a 'luxury hotel'.

Our fourth or fifth stay here. Service here excellent as always. Quick to respond to questions by email, so helpful when we are there, delightful room, and tasty breakfast.

Everything about this place was wonderful. A quiet respite in downtown San Jose. The staff were very accommodating as we requested an iron and ironing board. Which they brought right away. The terrace and jacuzzi area were also very nice. We had a Superior room that opened to a small garden area. Which was so beautiful and quiet. The bed was a dream to sleep on and the amenities of the room were exceptional. Highly recommended as it is only about .5 kilo from the main downtown area and easily walkable.

I decided to book this hotel for my Family, because I was in the restautant before and I thought that will be a nice place. But unfortunately it was the worst decision in my life.. when we came to the hotel, the lady even didnt let me in, because she say "that Im not a guest of the hotel", and when I tried to explain, that I just want to change my clothes, because we have a dinner here, she just ignore me with the laught.. I made a reservation in the Hotel Restaurant at night, that my Family can rest a little bit, and invite my parents in law that they could meet each others first time.. so I spend few hours, waiting and freezing in the lobby.. in all this time, the recepctionist just sitting there and laughting.. so I dont think that you should treated like this anywone.. it was just rude, thats the reasson I decided to write this coment. I dont recomend this place for anyone.. Ive been in a lot of hotels in Costa Rica, and it was first time, when somone treated me like this..

Lovely classic hotel in Central San Jose. The rooms are very comfortable and they have a first class restaurant. I would highly recommend staying here.
