Very beautiful Plaza and worth the visit - not only as a tourist! It makes you feel a little bit like you are in Europe or better to say, in Spain. Beautiful buildings, beautiful Plaza with many options around it to either eat a big and full or small meal or to just enjoy a coffee or a hot chocolate. If you are planing to visit the churches or museums arround it, bring some time along as there were long queues to enter. Wonder around the small side streets with its beautiful little shops and cafes. I recommend to visit during the morning hours as the places were not overcrowded - also many shops (clothing etc) were closed. But it definetly feels much safer compared to the evening hours.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in heart of the Historic Centre of Lima, founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535. The Main Square of Lima is one of the key touristic destinations in the city. In the square are important buildings such as the Lima Cathedral and the Government Palace of Peru

Well, it's a beautiful square but I guess in the wrong place. I didn't feel like in Peru at all. I felt like in Spain. Of course, it is part of history but I just disagree with the colonization ideas around the whole world. So the square is nice with that Spanish architecture but it just looks to me like a strawberry on the top of a beef steak. Both are delicious but not tasty together. Thank you 💙

This is a beautiful square surrounded by beautiful buildings. However, it's surrounded by many other things as well. As of February 2024 police have mostly closed off the square to prevent additional demonstrations or unrest. For better or worse, that means it's essentially closed minus if you ask the police directly to allow you to take photos or cut through. You're not prohibited from entering, it's just not possible for everyone at once to enter.

Lovely large square with the impressive buildings to admire. It’s a shame that it’s still cordoned off with barriers so you can’t wander through the parks in the centre, instead being restricted to the perimeter, but fight to the front of the crowds and it’s still impressive. Plenty going on and to observe, with the services from the cathedral coming and going, and it’s a must visit for anyone’s first time in the city.

The square is located in Lima old town and it is a must see if you're visiting Lima. The oldest building in the square is the cathedral, which is now not used for messes. The second most important building is the presidential palace, very nice indeed and with a guard change show held every day. The other buildings are from in colonial style, in the typical ocra colour. The square is nice during the day, however it becomes a bit dangerous at night, so make sure you visit it with daylight.

Came here twice, first time it was cloudy and was only ok. Second time was sunny and much better. Still I would say it’s only ok but it is also probably one of a very few places to visit in Lima. There are also Lima signs on every corner and you can’t go inside the government building.

Beautiful plaza with great restaurants around it. Go there at late afternoon and stay till Night time to see the square light up. Visit all the other things around like San Francisco cathedral and others.

This was definitely a highlight. The square has closed down the streets to walk through like a shopping centre. I would definitely recommend going at night time to see it lit up. It felt very safe as well as they have national and local police everywhere. There is also local guides that speak English to help you out if you need to get somewhere!

The one place that every tourist and local Peruvians visit. It's huge, spacey, but subject to random closures (anyone knows where to look up when and why the square is scheduled to close?) The buildings surrounding the square is beautifully architected and historical. The main square is neighbour to a lot of museums and churches that everyone ought to visit at least once in their lifetime. The square itself is free to visit, but the museums near by all are paid for entry. Expect some to sell tourist packages or shoe cleaning services.

The Lima Main Square, known as the Plaza Mayor, is an absolute must-visit for anyone exploring the rich history and culture of Peru. This square is the heartbeat of Lima, surrounded by some of the most iconic and historically significant buildings in the city. The architecture is breathtaking, with the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, and Archbishop's Palace dominating the square. The vibrant energy here is infectious, whether it's the local vendors selling traditional Peruvian crafts, the captivating street performances, or the constant buzz of both locals and tourists. This place isn't just a feast for the eyes; it's a journey through time. The stories held within these walls resonate with the heritage of Peru. Visiting this square is like stepping into a living museum, where every corner holds a piece of the city's past. Additionally, the square's central location makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the rest of Lima. You can easily access other attractions, restaurants, and shops from here. However, as it's a bustling tourist spot, it can get quite crowded during peak hours. Regardless, the vibrant atmosphere and the historical significance outweigh the crowds. A visit to Lima isn't complete without immersing yourself in the beauty and history of the Lima Main Square. It's a definite highlight and an essential stop for any traveler. Pro tip: Consider a guided tour to fully grasp the historical importance and stories behind the buildings and the square itself.

Very lively. Saw the guards doing their closing ceremony at 6pm. Church bells and music are awesome. Lot of street vendors and buildings near by. The famous photo spot for LIMA let cut out is also here. There is an explanation of plaza and buildings. Must visit in Lima and expect to spend a couple hours. We skipped the city tour and just hung out by ourself

The center of the center, plaza de armas in Cuzco. The city that was recognized by most of the South Americans as the center of the short lived in an empire, has huge cathedrals, small tienditas, and lively restaurants. There’s always a cool gathering, political, religious or dance event.

The Lima main square is located in the historic center of Lima . This place called plaza de armas is the birthplace of the city of Lima, a UNESCO world heritage site. A lot of beautiful architecture and historical buildings. You could really see the Spanish colonial influence in the area.

This is a beautiful square surrounded by government buildings. Lots of food and drink choices nearby, especially at lunchtime. We were fortunate to catch a band performance outside the government building. What a wonderful performance and great chance to see Peruvian culture.

The center of the town, which you have to visit. I came there in the evening and I wish I had started before it started to get dark. But anyway, it was still a nice stroll in the evening. The architecture is definitely something to look at and the lighting in the dark makes it more dramatic. Besides that, there are shops and restaurants nearby.

  • 3/5 Sundarraj K. 4 years ago on Google
A nice place to walk around basking in the vast colonial era buildings and cathedrals. The colours of the buildings are colourfully pastel. This seems typical of this part of the world. The sun is not hot, just warm enough on most days and there are no rains. The plazas and the buildings are vast, so go girded to walk long distances and carry a bottle of water. Walk in group, don't risk it alone. See the Art Museum to understand some history of the place.

A big square that holds a lot of history of Lima social and political events. It’s a noisy place and a little messy, but the architecture of building around the square are great. Near of churches and museums.

Did a free walking tour around Lima’s Centro Cívico (go to tourist information center! They have so many options and good recommendations!). The area is full of antique, colonial-style buildings (almost all of them are protected by UNESCO. The squares are full of flowers and the churches are gorgeous!! The tour guide was Susana, she knows so many things about her country! Really lovely. At midday we were able to see the change of guards at the National Palace (it happens every midday). Highly recommend this tour.

In the center of Lima, Plaza de Armas is a great pit stop if touring the area. Again, only if touring the area. There is so much history with the surrounding buildings. The cathedral is right there! So pretty. I would suggest getting dropped off at Plaza San Martín and walking up to Plaza de Armas on Jirón de la Unión street. Tons of stores on the walk up. I will say the stores surrounding the plaza are touristy and in my opinion, play to the average tourist. Nonetheless, a must see when in Lima.

A very calm place where you can sit and chat with friends or take great photos and draw. You must always be extra careful in the centre of Lima but there's enough of a police presence in the Plaza de Armas to feel a sense of security (not saying to drop your guard). An overall enjoyable place to relax, very tranquil and with good architecture; the church and other buildings.

Beautiful plaza with manicured lawn and surrounded by some of the most important buildings of the city: The Government Palace, Lima Metropolitan Cathedral, Archbishop's Palace, Municipal Palace and the Palacio de la Union. Francisco Pizarro himself designated this place to become the central square of the capital in 1535.

Safe place, the buildings are really beautiful. I walked from Plaza San Martin to Plaza Mayor and then to Museo Catacumbas de San Francisco. Walking and taking pictures not in a hurry, took us about 30 mins walk. The cathedral fee entrance is Sol$10, the Arzobispo Palace next to that has a Sol$15 fee, and another Sol$15 for the church with the tombs and bones, San Francisco. A lot of restaurants around, also traditional gifts stores and local jewelry made of silver.

A very well kept Square with its beautiful historical buildings. Peru was occupied by Spanish for a good three hundreds years who built a lot of beautiful buildings in this desert area of Peru. Although the Spanish have gone a long time ago but Peruvian authorities have kept these buildings in tip top condition which draw a lot of locals as well as foreign tourists who bring in a lot of foreign exchange. 👍✌👌

This experience was a love hate situation, you must got and visit when you’re in Lima but they shut the square down when we got there because they were worried there was going to be a protest and made us leave, it’s near a not very great part of the city and our Uber driver told us 8+ times to be careful and watch out for thieves … we felt safe, there was a lot of security but it’s very annoying that the square was shut down right after we arrived

Lima's Main Square, known as the Plaza de Armas, is the historical and cultural heart of the city, and it truly lives up to its reputation. Stepping into this magnificent square feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by stunning colonial architecture and a vibrant atmosphere. One of the standout features of the Plaza de Armas is its impressive Cathedral, a grand and imposing structure that dominates the square. The Cathedral is a marvel both inside and out, with its intricate facades and beautifully adorned interiors. It's worth taking a guided tour to learn about its rich history and see the priceless treasures it houses. Surrounding the square, you'll find other historic buildings, including the Government Palace and the Archbishop's Palace. These structures are not only architecturally significant but also provide a glimpse into the political and religious history of Peru. What truly makes the Plaza de Armas special, though, is the lively ambiance. The square is a gathering place for both locals and tourists, and it's common to see street performers, artisans, and vendors offering traditional snacks and crafts. It's a fantastic spot for people-watching and soaking in the local culture. In the evenings, the Plaza de Armas comes alive with beautifully illuminated buildings, creating a romantic and enchanting atmosphere. Whether you visit during the day or at night, the square offers an excellent opportunity for photography and capturing the essence of Lima. One tip for visitors is to be cautious of your belongings, as the square can get crowded, attracting both tourists and opportunistic individuals. However, with reasonable precautions, you can thoroughly enjoy this iconic destination. In summary, Lima's Main Square, the Plaza de Armas, is a must-visit attraction in the city. Its historical significance, stunning architecture, and lively ambiance make it a memorable and enriching experience for travelers. Don't miss the chance to explore this cultural gem at the heart of Lima.

Beautiful. Love the attention to detail of the architecture. Reminds me a little of Europe. The chapel at the square had so much in it. Hard to take it all in

Impressive main square in the old town of Lima. So very different from the rest of the city with surrounding buildings maintained perfectly, a large walking area and a huge fountain in the very center of the main square.

It's a pleasant square/plaza, with many colonial historic buildings around it, including the Lima Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace of Lima, the Government Palace, the Municipal Palace and the ubiquitous Lima sign. I was lucky enough to arrive when it was closed momentarily, for presidential business and saw it empty. There's also a nice fountain in the centre and seating all through it.

If you get a chance to visit Lima, make certain you get to the main square area. Filled with incredible architecture and cultural experiences. Statues of life from different areas, museums, and the palace are essential. Take in the local cuisine and tour the chocolate museum too.

Visited the main square on a short day trip in Lima and was surprised by how much we got to see and experience. It was a Sunday so the streets were busy with church ceremonies, and also a Latin American group was displaying cultural clothing. The centre is busy, lively and we felt safe walking around. The couple of hours, although brief was an experience well worth it. Do’s: - plan your time if you are only going for a couple hours, the roads get busy so you don’t want to miss a flight / train. - try going early in morning as you can take pictures with clearer streets, and church ceremonies seem to finish around 10- 11 am. So you might catch some celebrations.
