Total waste of money. Lovely room and decoration but the customer service is awful. We checked in we were just given our room key and asked ‘do you have any questions’ we were quite surprised and didn’t know what to ask. There was no explanation of any of the amenities, where breakfast could be bought or anything. At the end of the stay we paid a $35 a day resort fee- but have no idea what this was for? We had no tea/coffee supplied or anything. The website is very misleading and the hotel is split over 3 buildings which means we had to cross a busy street to access the rooftop pool in another building. Not ideal when in your swimsuit. At the pool there is nowhere to buy snacks or a drink (or better, supplied). Pretty standard stuff for a nice hotel? We are British and used to a high level of service but this hotel did not live up. This hotel cost the same per night to stay in the Shangri La in the Shard in London where the staff can not do enough for you and you feel a million dollars. So disappointed by the hotel Californian. Update- was promised to be updated on an ongoing request (via email) but am still waiting for a response 3 weeks later?? Have sent reminders twice which have been ignored. Another example of fantastic customer service.

Not up to par with Luxury lodging in Santa Barbara, 3rd rate 5 star hotel, there's not a Real concierge. The front desk and reservation personnel seem too busy with their duties, answering phones, checking guest in/out, processing parking charges and helping walk-ins, while also taking dining and reservation queries. Hard to give guests the attention they’re paying for. security spends too much time on their cell phones distractedly watching videos. Valet Bell service is contracted out along with the arrival experience, which ruined the stays harmony. There's no ice machines, Ice is only available by request. The room service Hours are minimal, 7AM seems Late and only goes to 8pm… for 5 dimly lit stars at the luxury destination? Sunset Sessions are too LOUD, my friends room was on the 4th floor in the California building. She was hoping to get some rest, but nobody mentioned the loud music & DJ playing on the roof (above her head) all evening (Sunday afternoon when she checked in). Don't believe the canned response the the Hotel; they are fake to your face and behind it.

I’m not sure this is a 5 star hotel as stated. Yes, its location is prime and has great views. We booked this hotel for a quiet relaxing stay. But, starting off, we waited for our room to be ready. Guest reception (the Hispanic lady?) was not at all friendly, almost rude. Said our room was not ready and to wait and they would let us know when ready. This was at 2pm. Okay?!? After a whole day of travel, all we wanted to do was unwind, drop off the luggage and grab a bite to eat. 3 hours later, still waiting, had to go and check in to see if the room was ready. No one bothered to call us to let us know. Thanks for that. Got to the room, decent. Nothing more then a Hilton or Marriott double Queen. Hotel itself is choppy- meaning several different buildings. Gym in one building, room in another. The second night, the room next to us was having a party, very loud. Called hotel staff to inform them of noise complaint, and nothing. Party still goes on for a few hours until we had enough and had to leave our room. No housekeeping. Everything you need, you have to call and request, ie: extra towels, shampoo, even ice. There’s not an ice machine! It’s a nice location, but with the experience we had, and the $1000 a night room, one would expect a lot more!!!!!!

My husband and I came to Santa Barbara for my 30th birthday weekend. The staff was very friendly and we were able to get checked into our room as soon as we arrived at 3:30 (posted check in time is at 4). The hotel is stunning, we loved the courtyard and all of the details around the hotel! I was delighted on check in to find we got a third story room with a view of the water from the balcony. Perfect for sipping coffee and watching the sun rise! Our room was clean and had room service twice a day. The bar in the hotel (Djinn) is beautiful and had great cocktails. Valet was efficient and friendly! The location was perfect - so many places to walk to! Thank you Hotel Californian for a wonderful weekend in an unforgettable setting! ☀️

Mixed feelings here. The property is great - beautiful room, great grounds and rooftop deck (though we never did find the rooftop bar). We were surprised by how small the pool was, but that's only a minor issue. Room was quiet and comfortable. Property is split among 3 buildings. The building we were in (the one with Finney's downstairs) was very private, but that came at a cost. There was no one downstairs to answer questions, etc. We had to cross the street and go to the main building to talk to anyone, pick up our car, etc. Speaking of which, we were let down a bit by the service (meaning it did not meet our expectations for such a prestigious property). We had to call to request more T.P. twice. Seriously, why didn't they restock this when servicing the room? I've never stayed ANYWHERE where I didn't have a backup roll on hand at all times. And, once we did request it, we waited seemingly FOREVER for it to arrive. We're talking 1-2 hours. It's a good thing we weren't in immediate need of it. At one point, we called and asked if they could bring us some silverware. We'd gotten carryout and didn't realize we weren't given cutlery. Well, despite assuring us this was fine, the silverware NEVER arrived. We just gave up and ate (the cinnamon buns) without it. It was messy but fine in the end. We also found the front desk staff standoffish when we asked for help with things. I'm not sure if we just caught them at the wrong time or what. Seems strange for such an expensive hotel. We also had to visit the desk when checking out because our minibar charges were not taken out of our AMEX credit like they should have been. This was fixed but was an unnecessary (and unexpected annoyance). That said, the valet guys were fantastic. Very timely and super friendly. We had an EV and they made sure to charge it when it needed it. It was AMAZING to pick up the car with a full charge each day. This is the first time I've experienced this and I gotta say, it's going to be hard to go back. Last thing is location. We didn't realize that the Funk Zone is literally just hotels, wineries/breweries and restaurants. Sure, that's cool, but it isn't exactly convenient should you want to buy a bottled drink, tampons, or whatever else you need. The surf shop two doors down (which is very cool by the way!) does sell limited drinks, so that was a good find. Just beware that you will need to take a long walk or short drive to pick up any sundries.

This is solely a review of the checkin and first impressions of the hotel and room. The hotel is located in one of the more beautiful areas of Santa Barbara. Literally across the street from the beach within the Funk Zone area. The valet individual was nice. I have to mention that I had booked the room through preferred hotels which this hotel is a part of. During my booking process I had requested a crib and with an additional charge $50 I had to bite the bullet since I didn’t have a choice ( even though there are many surrounding hotels that don’t charge). I will not name names but the front desk staff experience was very underwhelming. If you pay such a high price for a stay I would expect a little more welcoming experience. While waiting for my turn, I couldn’t help but to watch the front desk interaction during a check out process. All I can say is that the guest who was with a 4-5 year old child didn’t leave with a smile. Little things but as an advertised 5 star establishment, I was a bit taken aback. I arrived with my family after a fairly long drive so was hoping to be greeted with a smile. Non was offered, and honestly being tired with a two year old who needed to be changed (parents understand the dilemma) my priorities were elsewhere. I forgot to mention that at the time of the booking I was promised an early checkin and usually when you have a baby certain exceptions are made to make your stay a bit more comfortable. What I was told was “our checkin is at 4 pm and your room isn’t ready and we’ll message you when it is”. I thought that shouldn’t be a big deal because my daughter and wife were hungry so we were excited to explore the funk zone for a delicious bite. The first problem was when I asked for a private area to change my daughter given the room wasn’t ready. The lobby bathrooms provide no baby changing areas. I was looked at with blank stares like I was an alien by three different people when I asked for a more private area. What I was offered was a lobby couch. “Fine that’ll do” I said hesitantly and my daughter was soon on the go with a clean diaper. Nevertheless I didn’t feel like I was at a 5 star hotel. We were notified of our rooms availability around 1:15 pm and we were happy to head back to the hotel for an afternoon nap time for my daughter. Upon coming back to the front desk I was looked at with a couple of blank stares even though I was there a little over an hour before. Also there aren’t many people checking in so opportunity lost on welcoming me back to check me in. Again no smiles or “hello welcome to hotel Californian” of some sort were offered. I assume the front desk staff don’t have much experience working at 5 star hotels. I was checked in, wasn’t given any information as our dining, hotel in general or Santa Barbara or even a something as simple as Wi-Fi password. I wasn’t even asked if this was my first time at this hotel which it is. Was given the key and pointed toward the building where my room was located. Once we arrived in the room I realized the crib wasn’t delivered or setup as expected and at this point my daughter was crying and extremely tired. Keep in mind that not only I had asked for the crib during my booking but had requested it at the first initial checkin contact about 2 hours before the room keys were issued. I called to ask for the crib and no apologies were offered after I voiced my frustration about another missed opportunity for a more pleasant experience. All in all it took an additional 30 min for the crib to arrive. The room itself aside from a few stains on the carpet is very welcoming and open. The front desk service needs major retraining. At this point I won’t be revisiting this hotel until I see reviews that prove to me there has been major changes made. Tap far this is not a family friendly hotel given the extra cost of crib and the lack of empathy from front desk staff.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful, but it does not meet the expectations of a luxury experience, beyond design and location. At this price point, I had hoped for a level of service that was not delivered on. The hotel seemed under staffed, and the staff that was present didn't seem trained in providing luxury service. The staff was hard to get a hold of, did not put in the extra effort to meet requests, service hours were incredibly limited with no flexibility, and restaurant service was negligent and slow. We also didn't have hot water our first morning. We both had to take cold showers while waiting for someone to come check on it...which took over an hour. I wish I had done a bit more research before booking, as there are plenty of reviews here stating the service challenges. We loved our stay in Santa Barbara, but unfortunately, the limitations of Hotel Californian stuck out significantly to us.

I stayed at the hotel on Christmas Eve. When I tried to take a shower on Christmas Day, the water was dark brown. Even after running it for awhile it was still brown. There was significant sentiment in the water as well. I have pictures. When I complained to the front desk, I was given conflicting stories about who to talk to. I spoke to Adam Turnbeaugh who said he was on sick leave and could not talk to me. He had no return date and no one else I could talk to. It is now January 4 and he has not called me back nor has anyone else. I wrote to David Ernay who also said he could not help and never called me back. I would not stay at this hotel. The water is unusable and the management is dismissive. To add insult to injury they double charged me for the room. I paid the entire charge on December 1 and then they charged me another 1,000 deposit on December 25. When I pointed this out to ALan in accounting he immediately reversed the second charge. I wonder if this is a common error that the hotel makes and often does not reverse. I WOULD NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. IT IS DANGEROUS. I ALSO WONDER ABOUT THE ACCURACY OF THE BILLING

Edited my review as they did end up fixing the issue after 4 months. When you say you will call someone back, it would just be appreciated that you follow through especially knowing I was billed twice for an expensive room. Nice hotel and in the best location. _________ Told review: They billed me twice for one room and then wouldn't answer my phone calls and call me back to correct it. Ended up having to dispute it with my credit card company.

My wife and I are wedding photographers and had the opportunity to shoot a wedding reception at the Californian. The white walls and beautiful architecture lend itself to great light and nice pockets of symmetry. Also the staff were really great to work with and provided us with great attention. We had a really positive experience here and hope we can find our way back there soon!

The rooms are really great, spacious and with a great aesthetic. The only thing that didn't sit well is that the onsite bar & restaurant shuts on Sunday & Monday, not great if you are staying Saturday to wednesday!! The rooftop pool, although small is nice and refreshing with plenty of beds.

I couldn’t recommend The Hotel Californian MORE! This lush and lavish property is nestled right in the heart of the Funk Zone. It’s edgy yet elevated, and each and every staff member has made the wedding planning process seamless! Huge shout-out to Gavin, Samantha, and Xochilt for their attentive kindness and pure professionalism throughout this process. Thank you for making a Bride’s life just a little bit easier! Book with them, you won’t regret it!

This is a great location and the rooms are nice. The staff is very friendly and service is pretty great. The price however is a bit outrageous for what you're getting. I don't know if the prices were always this high or just got high during pandemic but rates are like $500-600. It's just not worth it. The location is very nice. You have blackbird down stairs and finneys across the street with goat tree up the block near mcconnells. One really cool thing though is the sunday sessions DJ they have rooftop during the summer. that's soething I would definitely check out if you're going to foot the bill here.

We will not be coming back. The service here is not a 5 star. We checked in around 2:00 and the rooms were not available until 4:00 so we decided to spend time at the pool. Service was so slow and we had to get our own drinks. They didn’t have towels for at least 40 mins. It was my birthday and my husband requested to have something special for me at the room upon arrival with $250 budget, I got nothing. Not even a card. We decided to ride bikes the next morning and this is the morning of September 5th, the lady at the front desk had an nonchalant attitude and was not very helpful at all. It’s so bad we left a day early to stay at the RITZ instead, that’s a true 5 star hotel and property. I do not recommend this place. Go to Miramar instead or another 3 or 4 star and save your money.

For paying $1000/night, this was the most sub par experience I’ve had for a “luxury hotel” The location is prime, but the hotel itself was nothing special. There was a lot of bugs in our room. I killed two in the bathroom, and thought nothing of it. “Sure they must have just snuck in” When we finally rested our heads on our pillows and looked up, two big bugs crawling above us. They eventually went into the vent, but for paying $1000 for one night! Pretty unacceptable. I couldn’t really sleep knowing those creepy crawlers were around. No coffee or espresso machines in the rooms. For the price, definitely better off staying at a cheaper hotel in the same area

UPDATE: In response to Joseph: You are not providing an apology I see your hotel will not take accountability for the inconvenience this has caused us and instead deflected it back upon me which is very insulting. I have traveled to other places in preparation of my wedding day and never had this experience. If in fact, we would have brought roaches in our room please explain how the other rooms that were provided that day did not contain ROACHES. I am very disappointed with your response. This has caused me irreconcilable hardship on a day that was supposed to be memorable and happy. See my YELP REVIEW FOR DETAILS: I have very mixed emotions about staying at this hotel. I first have to say this was MY WEDDING WEEKEND (9.22.23-9.26.23) when all of this happened, and I truly expected a lot more from this hotel. I gave them plenty of opportunity to try and go above and beyond over the situation and they just swept a lot of my issues under the rug. If I hadn't required anything from them, they would not have offered to help. WE FOUND ROACHES IN OUR BATHROOM. The first two nights we were so excited and didn't think to check the room thoroughly because we never thought something like this would happen at a "five-star hotel". We were greeted with chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of wine. We were so happy because had saved up for 2 years to have the best wedding weekend. By the third day (OUR WEDDING DAY 9.24.23) I woke up at 4am to use the restroom only to find baby roaches and a larger roach crawling over and underneath the bathroom mats. One had crawled into my makeup bag and a larger one we found by the wall of the tv. At that point I knew the whole room was infested with roaches! I cried my eyes out! The photos I posted are after I squashed them. I called the front desk, and they couldn't move me into any rooms because they were at full capacity, but he would try and put us in a larger room. As upset as I was, I calmly asked if they could please see what they could do because it was my wedding morning and we had hair, makeup, video and photography arriving back-to-back. They said they couldn't do anything until a room became available and that they would call me AFTER 12PM! I was terrified I was going to find them in more of my things! They opened up a smaller room across the hall and the person at the front desk was asking for me to give up my original room and for all of my bridesmaids and vendors to squeeze into a 10x14 bedroom. Please keep in mind that the larger room was not available yet. I said no. I was pissed at this point. When the larger room was available it was 12:30pm! I had to be ready at 1pm for photos!! The following day the key reader didn't work on our larger room either. It was all a mess. THEIR SOLUTION: The hotel comped a bottle of Champaigne for the trouble. A bottle. That's it. Which I had to request. I had to call early the morning after my wedding to ask if I could have an extra night for robbing me of my wedding morning. They wanted me to pay half the rate or do a late checkout of 8pm. I practically begged them and had to reexplain my situation and informing them that I wasn't comfortable on how they did not realize the gravity of the situation. They finally agreed and let us stay the extra night. They still charged us for our entire stay after having to move our belongings out of 2 different rooms. They charged us for parking as well. I wanted to love this place so bad because I've seen other brides rave about their stay here, but this is the memory that I will have to take with me forever. Unfortunately, I know they will bypass all of this and ignore that maybe simply "writing about my experience" and "reviewing their property" isn't the solution but actually giving us what we requested as an honest couple and making us feel better about our stay along with a very sincere apology from their manager would have made us feel better. For now, they have our phone number and card information. If they are a company with any kind of a heart, they would do the right thing.

Attended the Sunday sessions rooftop party with friends. Drinks were nice and the rooftop bar and fireplace were excellent. The rooftop event space overlooks the city and the sea! I would like to add that your staff member Robbie Walker was an amazing attendant, who showed us around and made us feel so comfortable. We were invited by her, and she made the entire night feel like a dream! We will def7be returning.

This property is advertised as 5 star and charges prices to match. Our experience was average at best. We are well traveled. The customer service was lacking and while friendly, did not feel personal or professional. Too laid back and unattentive for the cost of this hotel relative to others in the area. There was nothing that felt special about our stay. We stayed in the main building and so had to walk across State street to use the pool. The pool and hot tub area were littered with trash and not picked up regularly. There was a strong sewage smell our entire stay, which may be out of their control, but certainly is not disclosed. Delayed response (the next day) in cleaning up pool area after we brought it to their attention. When we booked, we had messaged with staff who had planned a special surprise for my spouse in our room upon check-in. They forgot this and so we had to call down for it. No water bottles were in our room upon check-in. No one greeted us as we entered or exited the hotel, or asked how our stay was going and if we needed anything. In-room dining closes at 8pm and their restaurants have limited hours other than the Goat tree. The only positive for us was the proximity to the ocean and to the Funk Zone. We would not stay here again.

This hotel is over priced and the staff/service has no idea what they are doing. I cannot believe this is considered a “5 star hotel”. We were recommended to stay here on vacation and starting from the entrance with the bellmen taking our luggage to check-in - it was beyond disorganized and messy. I was charged three times (all “accidental” charges) and For a 5 star hotel - no accidental charges should be made. I’m in shock by the unprofessional and disorderly conduct of this establishment. The hotel is newly done so it gives the illusion of it being nice, but the quality is 0/10 and quality is what makes a hotel a 5 star hotel. I’m beyond disappointed with this establishment and would not recommend it.

I was charged twice for my hotel stay. According to the hotel it has been reversed. My bank shows no reversal. Both my bank and I have tried to reach the billing department for over a month. No one answers. No one calls back. It’s beyond ridiculous at this point. I’m out thousands with absolutely no accountability and a completely incompetent staff. I went looking at wedding venues. Absolutely no freaking way. Don’t waste your time.

Our stay at this hotel was incredible. The room was spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities we needed. The location was perfect, right in the heart of the city.

Big rooms look nice but lack fundamentals like a working dresser (there are 2 big drawers but the upper one is full of the coffee machine and accessories) or hooks in the giant bathroom for the big heavy towels or robe or your travel kit. You have to download an app to watch TV (no thanks) and the WiFi dropped out the first night. The beds are comfy, the duvet is good, the pillows are just OK. For $1K a night why not just have Netflix? And our room has 2 big beds but only one robe in the too-small closet. Lots of convenience was sacrificed for style, and rooms are Moorish stylish, a good thing. ...and it's nice to have tubes of good shampoo, body wash, etc., But how about just one nice bar of soap??

Great location, just a block away from the pier, and minutes walk to coffee, food, downtown. You can see the pier from our balcony. Staff is very friendly. Also dog friendly! Also, their bathrobes, the most comfy plush bathrobe ever. So comfortable I asked if they sell them and they do!

My wife and I planned a Cali Central Coast getaway and this was our first stay in Santa Barbara. The hotel amenities and hotel customer service was well with it. Darren at the front desk made us feel welcome from the first time we arrived. From check in to check out the stay was fabulous. The location offered walking distance to all of the major attractions.

Awesome Stay! Warren and his team associates are terrific. What a hotel - and amazing restaurant as well! Had the best experience from the moment I walked in, roof top fire pit and sun setting what a view almost seemed like a movie scene with . The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so memorable. Truly above and beyond service. I can’t wait to return.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara and I must say, it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the stunning property and its amazing views of the city. The Hotel Californian is an iconic location that perfectly captures the essence of Santa Barbara. With its beautiful architecture and luxurious amenities, this hotel is the perfect setting for a dream wedding. The attention to detail in the design of the hotel is evident everywhere you look, from the elegant lobby to the beautifully appointed guest rooms. But what really sets this hotel apart is its stunning views of Santa Barbara. From the rooftop terrace, you can see the cityscape and the ocean stretching out before you. It's the perfect backdrop for a wedding ceremony or reception, and it's a view that will leave your guests in awe. Overall, I highly recommend Hotel Californian as a wedding venue. It's an amazing location that truly captures the beauty of Santa Barbara, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a truly unforgettable wedding experience, this is the place to be.

Truly a wonderful stay! Everything was expertly executed to perfection from arrival to departure. The design was thoughtfully exact, providing a fresh balance of class and artistic nuances throughout the hotel, my room being the epicenter of that intentionality. It was a cozy bit of paradise during my stay in Santa Barbara, offering true feelings of luxurious comfort. While everything was on point, I especially appreciated the turndown service and the level of exactitude brought to that aspect of my stay. It was genuinely enjoyable to watch the room magically transform throughout the day with just the right conditions staged in my room for whatever the time of day required. There was ice in my bucket when I needed it, coffee refilled for morning consumption or an afternoon read on the terrace, and the bed and bath made up to feel fresh at all times. Then there were the yellow notes; these showed up around the room daily with various quotes or insights. They were just a nice cap to top off the already fantastic service. Well done! You have ruined me for all other hotels thus far.

I like to think of myself as an experienced traveler and this place did not disappoint at all. Actually, it was probably one of my top hotel experiences period: from the hotel property, staff, and overall experience. I have to call out 5 amazing employees at the Hotel Californian: Alex, Kristos, Mercedes, and most importantly Adam. These individuals went above and beyond to make our experience wonderful. You almost felt like family, which is very rare in my opinion. Adam was great in providing us recommendations and he really knew the area. If you are in town on Thursdays, be sure to ask if there is a Winemakers dinner at Blackbird (one of my favorite dinner experiences). Because the hotel has strong relationships with vineyards in the area, they showcase a variety of wines that pairs perfectly the course you are having. Amazing food and company! Lastly, the hotel is a perfect location as they are in the newly renovated “Funk Zone”. There are many new shops, restaurants, and bars in the area, so be sure to check them out!

Incredible hotel! Tim Good who welcomed us into the hotel and checked us in the room is the most awesome person I met - he was so accomodating, helpful and attentive. He prepared a huge folder for us to discover Santa Barbara and the region around. The hotel architecture is amazing, the room we stayed is was magnificient and the location can't be beat. Rooftop jacuzzi is a huge plus, and there was easy parking! I would recommend and want to come back again!
