The hotel and its management is utterly disorganized. - We paid for a suite and when we arrived, it was not available for 2 out of the 3 nights. The hotel didn’t even bother to rectify the situation - their response instead was “would you like to cancel this reservation?” - at 2am. - Housekeeping is a bit interesting: our room has 2 beds and both were made up differently once they cleaned the rooms. Plus instead of cleaning the room one day, they opened our room and put a note saying that “they missed us.” - After self-parking the car for 2 out of 3 days, we suddenly needed the valet manager’s approval to self park. We will not be returning anytime soon. This property is a disgrace to Hyatt.

Quaint hotel with charm. Great hospitality but lacking in refined touches. Buildings are separated with no enclosed passage and multiple levels to get between accommodations on the property. Meeting rooms were barely functional due to very poor acoustic isolation. You could hear everything in the adjacent meeting room. Sheets didn’t fit the mattresses and other towels were frayed. Just overall not refined. Would not stay there again by choice. All the stars go to staff who provided great customer service.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THIS HOTEL!!! The prices are as high as the quality and service is low. There is music BLASTING outside of our room because the hotel has allowed a DJ at the pool (which we are right above) and they absolutely refuse to turn the music down. Several complaints to the front desk and management to no avail. This is NOT a hotel stay worth $400/night (or anywhere near that). Not to mention the hotel and rooms smell like mold. Above all, the response to the insanely loud music was absolutely astonishing. They completely downplayed and disregarded our concerns and would not even agree to come into our room to hear how disturbing the music is from where we are. They offered to move our room, but we are here with friends and family for a wedding for a few days and all of our things are unpacked and set up for us to be ready for the wedding activities. We have just a couple of hours between events when we were hoping to get some rest and peace and instead we're forced to be in what feels like a nightclub. SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY, HEADACHE, AND RUDE STAFF--AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS!

We were "upgraded" to the smallest room in the hotel with the ac unit directly underneath our room. When asked to change rooms due to the noise, we were given a room next to the stairs. You could hear folks going up and down all night and the slamming of the door. Due to the design, it echoes and is very loud. We got little sleep during our trip and will not stay here again. The hotel was across the street from the beach, but much further away from the wharf and most activities. We were gone for the day between 8am and 4pm and no one cleaned our room when we were out. At about 5pm there was a knock on our door requesting to clean our room. The "heated pool" was not heated. The jacuzzi was nice. It was not worth the money. We had friends and family members spend much less for their rooms at other locations, and enjoyed their places much more. We will not stay here again. We were looking for something quite and peaceful. We did not find that at Mar Monte.

This place was incredible. At check in we were treated like family. There is street parking available if you don't want to valet. There are several restaurants within walking distance. The one on the property was fantastic and there are two locations to chose from. There is a beautiful pool and a spa where you have a stunning ocean view. There are gorgeous mosaic tiles, fountains and toasty fireplaces in many locations throughout the hotel. Across the street is beach front restaurant with the most amazing vibe and views. My boy and I went there to heal and we wish we were still there. 💔🌊🌞🌤⛱

Fabulous stay at this hotel! The staff were all very friendly and helpful The place is so pretty with an old feel but very nice and clean. Our room was clean and comfortable with an amazing view of East Beach from our balcony. The bathroom was beautiful with a wonderfully hot shower. Great location with beach right across the street and state street, the pier, zoo, and the mission just minutes away. Quiet neighborhood at night so we could listen the the ocean all night long. Highly recommend. Will definitely be returning!

I worked for this hotel in the mid to late 90s. Hearing the complaints regarding the dinginess of the rooms is no surprise. People need to know this hotel is a historic landmark. It’s is a 100 yrs old, so naturally it’s going to feel a big dated. It’s got a Santa Barbara Spanish vibe and not a modern style hotel. So, if you like hotels with character, this place might be for you. The there are four buildings. Rooms are decent size and the hotel budgets for quality products- beds, amenities, etc. The restaurant was always a feature. The ocean is literally across the street with one of Santa Barbara’s most popular beaches- the world famous East Beach. Some rooms are worse than others- stay away from 109 and 209. The ocean front rooms on the second and third floor of the two adjacent buildings are the best! They are direct ocean view. Non-ocean view rooms typically view the mountains or the hotel parking lot. The price is ridiculous for what you get, but that’s because of location, and demand. All the hotels along the ocean charge crazy prices.

This is a very old hotel. Worst customer service ever with a very rigid and rude hotel manager. The other hotel staff were great, this manager had totally ruined it for us. She was supposed to check a query and did not even come back to us for >30 min and went on to her other work, letting us wait at the lobby and wasting our time. We were supposed to have a breakfast for 3 included in our stay, but she insisted that the booking meant that we are having a breakfast for 2, 3 times a day! We are staying in a 4-star hotel with an illogical manager handling this query. When she came out from the room after 30 min, she rudely told us that our booking app vendor will call us to update us. If you just had the decency of a basic hotelier, you would not be treating your guests like this. Mar Monte, please manage your hotel managers better.

Definitely not a normal Hyatt. Location is great. Near beach and short drive from downtown SB. The room was somewhat updated but not totally renovated. Pool is pretty small and full of screaming young kids and toddlers. Don’t expect relaxing pool time. Overall pretty average .. got a discounted Hyatt members rate which made it somewhat reasonable but would have been incredibly upset had I been paying the full rate of $600 + for our room. Fine for a night. Elevators and main lobby have a funky smell - some sort of cleaning liquid I think. There are dogs everywhere. Must be one of the only dog friendly hotels in area. The rooms are carpeted and dog hair everywhere. Lots of dust in room. Cleaning obviously not thorough. Hotel staff is very friendly and welcoming.

Very unimpressed with this Hyatt hotel. My husband is a Hyatt globalist, so we frequent many different Hyatt hotels - this was by far one of the worst we've been to. The room smelled so musty and moldy. When I unpacked when we got home all of our clothes had the smell on them. One of the "clean" pillows on the bed when we arrived was covered in stains. We had to practically beg them to come service our room on our third day there (no one even attempted to service our room the whole time we were there). After my husband sent, no exaggeration, 6 messages and called the desk asking for our room to be serviced they finally did. He has bad allergies and they were flaring so bad while we were in the room - he was coughing like crazy and had a hard time sleeping. When we were out of the room his allergies were fine. Our room was right next to the pool so there was loud music playing late into the night. Someone across the hall from us had a dog that they must have left unattended and the dog barked, cried, and howled for hours on end. I am a dog lover and honestly felt so bad for the dog so I called the desk out of concern. I know the dog barking isn't the hotel's fault but just wanted to mention in case you are planning on staying here. But the walls are thin so it sounded like the dog was right in our room. Overall would NOT recommend staying at this place! Definitely not a 4-star-hotel, I would say it is a 2-star at best.

Not worth the price. Very disappointed in this place. For the price we paid, I'd expect more. #1 we are here for our 20th anniversary and for a wedding. They put us in the Santa Rosa building which looks and feels like an old Apartment. No view. The only view we had was of the apartment next door. No self parking...Valet only. Every place you would want to go to is a driving distance away. Which means that you have to go through the hassle of getting your car pulled up and tip each time you leave. The room we got smelled musty and old. It was muggy and hot in the room when we arrived which brought out a smell. We complained the next day hoping that we could go to lunch and come back and have everything cleaned. But no luck, the room was never made and it still smelled. I even told them that there was a slight scent of urine near the AC unit. Water pressure in the shower was horrible and the toilet chain broke. Very very annoyed by this place. Ruined our 20th celebration. I expect more from the Hyatt. This place felt more like a Motel 6. Never again. I asked for the manager to call me and never did.

We visit Santa Barbara once if not twice a year, for a family vacation. This hotel by far has been our favorite. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the hotel itself is so cozy and calming. Parking is expensive but you can almost park anywhere on the street surrounding the hotel - If you don't mind a short walk - and save some money. The main courtyard is perfect for a little late night r&r. I love the location, it's right across from the beach pavilion (which has restrooms and a restaurant) and has our fav park on the beach for kiddos. The food at the hotel is AMAZING. You must try the fried & grilled chicken sandwiches. The room is the only thing I gave 4 stars. They are quiet, they are very clean and the beds are the most comfortable I have slept in. I love the entire set up, the super quiet ac unit, and I can appreciate the dimming lighting options throughout because I had a toddler who needed to go to bed early or take naps - downside was the mildew smell. No other complaints! Check in and check out was quick and easy, and we will 100% be returning.

The room we got was completely different than what the pictures online showed when I booked. What I expected to get was a large spacious king room with seating areas, private balcony and views of the street and ocean, just like the online pictures. Instead, our room was much smaller and didn’t have the unobstructed oceanfront view that I expected and paid extra for. It had a bed and a desk and two nightstands and that's it. Everything was cramped. Our balcony was set way back and sat over the pool, with no privacy whatsoever and neighbors whose kids kept jumping over our balcony wall. We never did get to enjoy our balcony due to the horrible layout and nosey neighbors. The staff would not change my room when I complained. The room I was forced to stay in was tiny, barely suitable for one person let alone two. The bathroom was terrible, no counter space, super small. Was supposed to be a romantic weekend for my husband and I, as it was our first time to Santa Barbara, but it was completely ruined by unaccomodating staff and deception of room type. I was promised meal comps and a bottle of wine that I never got. I feel like I paid for a fancy suite and got a motel 6 room instead. Walls in our little dungeon room were super thin and every word, footstep and movement could be heard around us. I was super disappointed, feel ripped off and want my money back. I paid over $800 a night for a room that definitely did not justify that price! Absolutely ridiculous.

I had a terrible experience with the front desk lady on Friday evening 11/17 but I was lucky to have a completely different and amazing costumer experience with Danielle who was at the front desk on Saturday and Sunday. Danielle really changed the hotel experience for me and that’s why I think with a good and attentive person such as her in the front desk things change and I’m giving this hotel 5 stars. The location is wonderful by the Ocean and the breakfast is great! They also lend their bikes for free and there is a gorgeous bike path in front of the hotel.

The hotel is beautifully renovated. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. There are two restaurants on site that are excellent for breakfast and dinner. The pool area is very nice with a hot tub and a pool bar. Directly across the street is East Beach and the Cabrillo pavilion. There is a restaurant called Reunion there that has excellent food right on the beach. The employees were very helpful and courteous. Taice was our favorite! She served us at the bar and was our waitress several times. She’s a lovely young lady with a delightful personality!

Literally across the street from East Beach, can't be the location. Valet parking only which kind of sucks but we were there during the week and it was easy enough to find parking on the curb by the hotel. Not much in the sense of amenities but that's not a deal killer for me. Within walking distance is a small market, a few restaurants, a few food trucks, the zoo and everything else you could hope for is within a 5-10 minute drive.

Checked into a room across the street from the main building, after being told there were no more rooms in main building. Had to return twice to front office for maintenance/security check. Come to find out it was occupied. Second room was ok, except, it had connecting door to room next-door. Noisy occupant! Why don't hotels vacuum/shampoo the rugs anymore? Nasty sticky carpet! The staff in the restaurant were outstanding!

My friend and I had an opportunity to stay at this beautiful property in our spontaneous road trip. We had wished we could have stayed longer. Excellent location, service, stylish lobby, room and etc. Our room faced the ocean, a courtesy upgrade upon our arrival! It was absolutely lovely and comfortable. We loved the architectural style of the hotel and the Spanish tile works throughout the property. Absolutely gorgeous! We had a pleasure to meet the General Manager, Jerome. He is so welcoming and professional. He made sure our stay at the hotel would be one great experience. Thank you, Jerome! The hotel is certainly in an excellent hand to have him manage this very special property. Stopping at the hotel bar is a must! We were so impressed with the friendly staff, excellent service and great drink. Highly recommend to try Vodka called “Julius”. It’s glorious! I look forward to staying at the hotel again in the near future.

The hotel was disappointing for a Hyatt. The location is nice but that is all it has going for it. The room smelled musty when we entered, the towels were so old and dirty they felt like sand paper. The rooms were not cleaned daily, only sheets tucked in, trash discarded, and towels straighter out. They didn’t bother cleaning the bathroom vanity, sink, dusting or apply other normal cleaning techniques. The Walls are thin, so we heard flushing of toilets, doors slamming, neighbors talking late at night, the train, traffic, etc. The closet is in the bathroom with the toilet. We had 4 hangers to work with. There were big gaps around the door frames, so there was a draft you could literally feel by holding your hand by the door. Not worth the money. Would not stay here again.

The resort is both beautiful and well cared for. The staff is helpful, not 'in your face' like some places and they are responsive if you need anything. My wife and I LOVE this Hyatt property and plan on returning year after year. There are so many things that make this place so chill and relaxing.

Great location. Cool older building. My room smelled like an old bath towel. But the bed was comfy and the AC worked well. No extra late checkout for Hyatt Gold Members which is annoying.

I should have taken a look at the reviews before booking our stay here. Unfortunately, we had a similar experience to others. While the location is good and the staff do their best to make it a nice experience, the property itself is extremely neglected. Clearly the owners have been deferring maintenance for many years. We booked a luxury suite with living room, kitchenette and veranda with a view of the ocean. The rooms are old, unmaintained (with scrapes on all the walls and furniture) and barely cleaned. Sheets and blankets are worn/shabby/frayed. The carpets and furniture all need a deep cleaning. The veranda was dirty as well, and the furniture was so dirty, with bird droppings, etc. that they were unusable. The kitchenette was not set up to use - no plates, no microwave, etc. I cannot recommend this facility - and strongly suggest that some of the motels near by will provide a better and much cleaner experience.

Great Location but Unpleasant Room Experience I recently stayed at Mar Monte Hotel and while the location was fantastic, my overall experience was marred by several issues that made my stay less than pleasant. Firstly, the location of the hotel was excellent, offering easy access to the beach and downtown Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, this was one of the few highlights of our stay. The most significant problem was the unpleasant stench in our room. Despite the apparent cleanliness of the space, there was a persistent odor that made our stay uncomfortable. It was disappointing to encounter this issue, and it significantly impacted our enjoyment of the room. Furthermore, our room was located next to a handicap door, which posed its own set of problems. The door emitted a high-pitched sound each time it closed, which could be heard inside our room. This constant noise made it difficult to relax and get a good night's sleep. Additionally, our room was situated next to the staircase, and every time someone used the stairs, we were subjected to loud, echoing footsteps. These noises, both from the door and the stairs, kept us awake at night, and we struggled to find the restful sleep we had hoped for during our stay. Regrettably, the combination of these issues made our stay far from comfortable, and we did not have the pleasant experience we had anticipated. It was disappointing that these issues were not addressed, as it would have greatly improved our stay. While I would like to commend the hotel's location, I hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and addresses the room-related issues to ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for future guests.

I have no idea why there are so many poor reviews for this place. First of all, the pool, fireplace lounge, and balconies (huge) are Top Notch. David was so wonderful, he upgraded us for our anniversary, we stayed in building two with ocean balcony..their gym is great, you can rent cute cruisers, they gave us champagne and macaroons.. the whole vibes is fantastic. Everyone was friendly.. my only issue the food sucked and the bartender on Sunday night was kind of knob. He wasn’t very friendly, seemed super distracted and wouldn’t stop talking to his buddies at the bar to take our order. Highly recommend this place otherwise. We’ll definitely be back. Thanks David!

We booked day of at a premium price. We didn’t expect to get the best room in the place but we’re at least expecting to be able to stay on the property to use the pool and walk to the beach. But all their available rooms were in their overflow location 4 blocks away, inland. We were willing to pay the price for the location which we didn’t even get. Instead our room was in a dumpy old building across from a run down parking lot with an abandoned car and teenagers drinking 40s. Our room had a view of an overgrown patch of weeds. We weren’t even offered a discounted rate upon our check-in. Luckily they refunded us and we found a better hotel option nearby. The main property seemed nice and our room was clean. Only stay here if you’re guaranteed a room on the main property. Our booking was a total scam.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Mar Monte. Directly across from the beach, the hotel offers stunning views, historic charm, and warm service. My room was spotless, and I loved the all the Spanish-inspired details. The resort also had beautiful public spaces, notably their main outdoor patio that had firepits at night. This will my new go-to place to stay in Santa Barbara.

The experience was terrible. We heard people walking, talking and moving stuff from upstairs all day long, even during the night. I can even hear what they said exactly. We wanted to play some music as white noise to distract ourselves and help us sleep, but the speaker they provided in the room was not working. The AC was not working, either. It is not worth the price, paying almost $500 for a sleepless night. Very very disappointed.

This hotel has a great location to the beach. I didn’t think the price was worth it for the room, but the property has a couple of restaurants, a pool and a gym. All great. Proximity to the beach is unmatched. Didn’t eat at the restaurant, but had a drink at the pool bar (expensive). There was only valet parking, on site. Staff were super friendly!

  • 4/5 Zeno L. 7 months ago on Google
The Mar Monte was a nice hotel with a great location. Literally steps to the beach. It definitely had a little wear to it. The AC in our room was making a horrible noise so we just turned it off at night. Luckily being next to the beach, you can just open the window. The staff was all very friendly and the location was amazing. I'd recommend staying here

See the ocean view deluxe suite room view in the photo; you should write 'partial ocean view' if you want to be honest. Location-wise, it's one of the farthest hotels from downtown, not a walking distance hotel at all. You can spend the same or less money and book a room at the other chain hotel, which is way closer to downtown and a nicer hotel. This hotel offers you nothing, literally nothing. Very old, but it doesn't even offer a vintage feeling. Such a waste of money. I regret spending money on this hotel.

Great location! Basically a few steps from the beach. Beautiful interiors. Check in person was super friendly, but like others have said, rooms and corridors smells musty. Housekeeping is not the best because they needed multiple calls to get a room freshener out. Note that parking is valet only ($40/ night) and buildings are not connected but very walkable to each other. Will stay again! Also, very close to Hwy 101.

Beautiful and warm room. The decor was clean but also gave a welcome and relaxed vibe. The bathroom was surprisingly large compared to the room, but was a nice touch and felt like a private mini spa. Cute little patio for morning coffee. I only interacted with staff at check in and out but both times the lines were not long at all and they were very calm and attentive. I arrived very tired from travels so maybe just a tiny thing that would have been nice is to mention explicitly the incidentals are charged to your card at check in. The lobby always had fresh coffee in the morning, which was a very lovely touch. The hotel is just 5 mins walk from the beachfront and some lovely restaurants.

This is my third year in a row with an extended visit. It's a convenient location, with great views & very comfortable. They've upgraded the patio furniture & the curtains & towels all look brand new. The new chef is outstanding. Every staff member is attentive & friendly.

The reviews were accurate. The overall hotel was nice but there was a musty mildew smell in my room and we found sunflower seeds cracked open in the bedding. When i reached out to them nobody ever responded. Luckily it was only one night. Ive stayed one other time and had no issues.

We decided to stay here one night while in Santa Barbara. Great location to the beach. Also really practical for downtown and zoo access. Our room was neat and clean and the perfect size for the two of us. The elevator in our building was a little awkward due to the fact we had to take two to get to the 3rd floor. Valet parking was the only option when we arrived and it’s $36 a night. Our room faced the pool which was pretty loud all day.

This place is so amazing and super cute. I stayed for one night as I had a wedding in the area. I must give a shout out to one of the staff members at the front desk. Her name was Nelly, I went to her with a panic as I had a tear on my jacket and she literally got a sewing kit on and sewed my Jacket back together. Just shows the vibe of the staff at this place! The rooms are super cute, the property is very elegant and the service is top tier!!! I can’t wait to visit again!

Front desk crew was awesome for check in and making sure my stay was pleasant. Jason (night shift worker) gave me a wake up call instead of a computer robo call like at most other hotels. Additionally, when my taxi didn't show up to take me to the airport, Jason rapidly contacted another company to get to airport at the time I wanted. Would definitely stay again.

The Mar Monte is an interesting hotel with lots of character, close to the beach. Upon arrival, we waited more than 45 minutes in the lobby for our room, finally settled in around 5pm, only one (of two key cards) worked. We were given a very small room that smelled funny and was located in another building across the street behind the hotel. There was no ice machine in the entire building. The room itself was nicely appointed, clean, and included a small fridge if needed. The swimming pool was beautiful, clean, and heated. The hot tub was ok, but small. There were multiple people trying to squeeze into the tub. Unfortunately one couple decided it was ok to light up a joint while other people were around, including young teenagers…unbelievable. The fire pit was large and lit well with multiple seats surrounding it. There are complimentary bikes which you can ride along the beach, a fun treat! We had dinner at the Lido, the service was slow and a bit strange. They somehow ran out of the only pasta dish available. The food was still very tasty. You can also go across the street to The Reunion Restaurant (not a part of the Hyatt) which is very busy and has a view of the ocean. We tried to end one evening with a late dessert at the Hyatt but the restaurant was already closed! (8pm) There wasn’t even room service! There is a large TV in the room, but only a small choice of channels to choose from. Parking is $30, only valet allowed. We parked on the street the second night. The final blow was when the air conditioner, located next to my daughters bed, was very loud, so I tried to turn it off, but the buttons got stuck and started to cool the room instead of heat! Unfortunately, in a panic, I needed to unplug the whole thing…not what you want to do in the middle of the night. They serve delicious coffee and tea in the morning at the lobby. Overall I’m glad we experienced the Mar Monte Hotel, but Hyatt has some polishing to do before we would go back.

AMAZING! Experience. We stayed here for part of our honeymoon. They gave us an awesome upgrade. Our room wasn’t ready when we got there, but they gave us a $50 credit for the wait. Which meant free breakfast. Cafe Lido was awesome too. The valet employees were quick and friendly. Plan on staying here again for sure. Highly recommend!
