A Gothic Masterpiece! The Basilica of Santa Maria Del Mar in Barcelona is a breathtaking display of Gothic architecture. Its soaring columns, intricate details, and captivating stained glass windows create a serene and awe-inspiring ambiance. Stepping inside is like journeying through history, feeling a deep connection to the past. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast or seeking a moment of tranquility, this basilica is a must-visit in Barcelona.

Recently renovated basilica church. It will cost you 8 Euro to enter and a couple more if you want to access the roof. The church is dark and has sparse decoration outside of the stained glass windows. The entire interior is faced in stone, no plaster, no frescoes or murals. There is not a whole lot of natural light and the sculptural detail is minimal. It creates a really austere and forbidding filling. In the end this church looks a whole lot like the Barcelona Cathedral and Santa Maria del Pi basilica.

Santa Maria del Mar ( Saint Mary of the Sea ; a very unusual and beautiful church in large medieval building built between 1329 and 1383 ) is a cathedral in the Ribera district of Barcelona and an outstanding example of a purity and unity style of Catalan Gothic .

This was really cool. I thought it was one of the better areas that I went to in Barcelona. The inside was phenomenal and had several exhibits to check out. The streets are fun to walk around and there are a ton of cafes and such to eat at

Very interesting basilica. It was built in just 55 years, from 1329 to 1384, and is the only surviving church in the pure Catalan Gothic style. The entrance was free after 5pm. From the rooftops of the Basilica you can enjoy Barcelona from a privileged perspective that helps to understand the medieval urban framework and the structure of the city center. To enter the rooftop – you need to pay for the ticket.

Did you know that this church (if I can call it that way) was built by the locals (poor people) on their own donations and by their hands within 54 years?! Unbelievable structure! Simple but so powerful! It’s free to visit any time. They might be closed during the daytime for some events though.

Beautiful looking gothic church. Entry is free. We went on a Sunday morning and got to attend a mass too. We did not need any tickets. Must visit if you have time. The look is phenomenal.

It was a nice place to visit. The rose window is very pretty and the ceiling is very high. The construction of the church started about 1320 so it is full of history. It’s an artistic and old cathedral and hope it will be kept well for people to see for years to come.

The church is one of Barcelona's landmarks, which looks like a fortress with its monumental towers in the old town. Locals call the church "Church of the poor". Especially worth seeing is the interior of the Santa Maria del Mar. You can also book a guided tour and enjoy the view over old town of Barcelona from the roof.

Tickets are €5 for entry and an additional €5 for roof access. It's neat how tall it is inside and the history is interesting. You can still see the fire damage.

Wonderful Basilica and location. Cool square in front, nice area all around the building. Worth seeing. It's only open a few hours each day.

Beautiful but really small basilica. I'd totally recommend climbing up to the roof to see the view of the city - the rest just feels like any other church, but the view is stunning and what makes it what it is

Stunning building with an eerie atmosphere. The sculptures and ceiling art was particularly interesting. I'm confused at the pricing, however. We entered through the door at the back with no charge, yet at the front there's a kiosk where you must pay.

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar was built in the 14th century. It is made in Gothic style. It is distinguished by its exceptional height. The details are impressive, there is a lot of beautiful and magnificent artwork.

Beautiful church. If you go during the day, there is a small fee. In the evening between 6 and 8:30 pm ish, it’s free but our itinerary was booked. Once inside, there is a door that goes up to the rooftop. It’s free and is worth checking out. Spectacular views of the city.

Oh this church feels so old, and beautiful. It had some parts that had been restored, but for the most part, it feels like you are in part of history.

  • 5/5 Matt R. 4 years ago on Google
A very cool church built in the 1300s. We stumbled in during mass and listened for a bit. We walked around and it was surreal to think of everything that has happened going on close to 800 years in that church. Still not verified, but if you look at the floor by the entrance and on the sides it looks like people are buried within the church's floor. Let me know if you ever verify this!

Great old church with lots of artifacts ⛪?

  • 4/5 Dhia A. 4 years ago on Google
Beautiful Basilica, with impressive architecture and small details in and out. The stained glass adds some beautiful light effects on day time, and the candles light make it absolutely charming by night time. It’s sad the visitors, crowd and multiple guided tours make it that noisy and not respectful to the building neither to it’s religious purpose.

Such a beautiful place to see. The architecture, the history and love is amazing at Sagrada familia. Definitely recommend the guided tour it's very informative and I felt I took more from this than an audio guide version. Really enjoyed my visit

Beautiful church. We weren’t able to go inside, but the sign gave a number of different prices, starting at €5 for simple entry. There is a slightly higher price for a guided tour.

Truly the jewel of Barcelona (among others of course). Although I'm not a Christian, walking into the basilica for the first time was a truly spiritual moment - I even felt dizzy. The colours of the glass and the way they cast light on the stone is breathtaking. Honestly, just amazing. We had a guide which took approximately 50 minutes. She was very informative and we'll paced and showed us other areas to explore once we'd finished the tour. We were in at 10am and it was VERY busy. Booking is absolutely essential. It was very satisfying to learn that our ticket cost and the profit from souvenirs directly pays for the ongoing building works. We absolutely intend to return when all the towers are finished.

It is the famous "people's cathedral" which has been praised in novels and movies, and it's beautiful, a must... but in the second Top 10 of places to visit in Barcelona. Sagrada Familia, Palau Nacional, touring the old quarters, Parc Güell, La Ciutadella, touring the Eixample, the Archaeology Museum, touring the port and beaches, FCB Stadium, evening and night life in Gràcia, and others, depending on your kind of likes, should come first.

This is a small church in the middle of old town. Loved all the narrow lanes and small cafes around it. Also, the place has special relevance in the history of region. The eternal flame is right outside it. The church is typical Gothic architecture. Beautiful to look from inside. The best thing is, entry is free as it should be for every religious place. Unlike other churches in the city which charge money to enter.

Beautiful Basilica with airy interiors worth admiring especially is the stained glass window featuring the famous rose motif, intricate metal light works and the striking statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola. There are plenty of bars and cafes in the vicinity in case you would like to enjoy a glass of wine while admiring the facade or octagonal towers.

Stunning and beautiful cathedral we stumbled upon. It is unbelievable how nice this is. It’s tucked in a great area of Barcelona and down from others. Amazing streets that you want to walk down each one and see everything in the area.

Their stained glass is so beautiful. It’s worth to visit. And you can also climb up the tower by walking. When we visited there, it was not crowded. Google Map say it’s free but we paid 10 EUR to enter the church and go up the tower. Only entering the church, you need to pay 5 EUR.

Located right in the middle of the Ribera District this Basilica was stunning! It was recommended to us by a friend and it did not disappoint. The price is 10 Euro per/person ( which is why I gave the rating 4-stars) yet we wanted to get to the rooftop as well as experience the beauty inside. It’s quite steep going up to the rooftop but there is a sturdy railing for those who get somewhat dizzy spiraling up the stairs. The rooftop granted us incredible views of the city and as it was right before sunset, there was no one there. The inside is just as impressive! Would recommend the area and the Basilica to spend a few hours to wander around & enjoy!

For me the most beautiful basilic in the world unique Gothic piece and you can read the book The Cathedral of the sea or watch the movie in Netflix you will be able to see how was bild. I had the honor to be baptized there so this place has a very special mean for me.

Underrated church. For a cheap entrance you can have access to the rooftop and have a great view of Barcelona, alone. Nobody will bother you. Might need a bit more support for restoration.

So much history with this Basilica. The gothic architecture is s feast for my eyes with the intricate facade. The Basilica invites people towards its sad yet peaceful becoming. I suggest going with a tour guide to share the story that goes along with its construction to the devastation it faced.
