Went here again with my parents. They loved it! I must say, please do not buy the special ticket for 23-25€! They are not worth it even if it's back and forth with the rack railway. The ticket only costs max. 7€ you can even walk to the Abbey and ditch the rack railway for 2.95€. Save your 5€ for something else!

I decided to leave a review here because I want to give others more specific information ;) the place is definitely worth a visit. religious, natural, climbing a mountain - an incredible feeling and its own atmosphere. definitely recommend. from Barcelona, you can first take the metro to Plaza España, where you can take the P5 train. then there are different options - going up the mountain by cable car or funicular. it is better to go by funicular (more seats, more comfortable and convenient). you should not confuse the station yet, because you need to get to the station earlier to take the cable car. I recommend buying a ticket for 45 euros at the station before the train. there is a return train, funiculars. you can still go even higher up (this is another funicular and it is included in the price). this ticket is called Trans Montserrat. also included is the entrance to the Basilica and the Black Madonna. you have to pay separately for the museum. 20-30 minutes will be enough there, there are paintings by famous artists. there is also a cafe with a buffet (like 2 of them), affordable and fast. if you climb even higher, mountain lovers can climb even more on their own. that's why such reviews are highly recommended, you also need to pay attention to the departure time because funiculars and trains run once an hour.

I booked a tour here from Barcelona. Didn't expect much but got an amazing experience. Great view from the top. Super quiet place. The day we were there was a bit busy because someone passed away. The view was amazing. From the abbey, there's a 20+ min walk to the cross where the view was superb. There were also free wine and cheese tasting at the market. Got a wonderful experience, meet great fellow traveller's here.

Talk about a disappointment. Wow one of the most over hyped totally commercialized dumps in Spain. Surprised there wasn’t a ticket to breath the air. The signage was clear as mud. If you are thinking of going here and expect some kind of authentic experience or to understand the history you will be seriously disappointed. Visually pleasing location however, it has some breath taking views on the trials above Montserrat. For €34 per person I would have expected something amazing, I guess better than paying 99€ for a guided tour from Barcelona. If you take the track car to the train station on the way back down they won’t announce anything but the train will stop once before the main line, everyone got out and the train left without a single announcement. We thoroughly enjoyed the hour wait for the next one. Inept doesn’t sum up those location enough. On the bright side they except donations via pay pass and cash. Take your own food and drinks, everything is so we priced, even a magnet was almost €5.

I had lovely weather on the day to the Montserrat and enjoyed the magnificent view from the mountain. There wasn't much crowd as the tour started early and it was great for photos and appreciation of the monastery. It was good advice to queue to see the Black Madonna first as the queue is usually long. It was terrific and I'm glad to see the Black Madonna at close proximity.

One of our favorite stops during our visit to Barcelona. Highly recommend the Tot Montserrat ticket: it includes absolutely everything you need-train, funicular, cable car, museum, basilica, and return. The buffet lunch is amazing with items for every taste. We hiked to the top of the mountain and saw the small chapel and caves. The view is spectacular. The cable car going down from the monastery offered beautiful views too. Don’t forget to stop at the little bar by the train station for a drink and ice cream. Such a relaxing spot nestled in an olive grove. The proprietor will not let you miss your train, though I could have stayed to enjoy the view for hours! Highly recommend this incredible day trip from Barcelona.

The Montserrat Monastery is worth a visit. Whether by bus or private vehicle, there is enough space. The monastery offers an excellent view of nature and cuts a beautiful figure. I would recommend a visit early in the morning when temperatures are cool and the atmosphere in the valley is initially gloomy, which changes to a sunny day as the visit progresses.

Beautifully located monastery, a must if you visit Catalonia. A little overcrowded, it is advisable to visit early. Afterwards, a hike into the surrounding mountains is recommended.

This was spectacular and well worth the trip. The energy in this place is palpable, the design and architecture is really beautiful and the way it is nestled in the unique mountain is amazing. So much to do on the site that 2 hours did not suffice. I will be back.

Lovely place to visit. Very busy at the time, transport in was easy and an experience. Taking the funicular to the top was an experience and we would recommend going to the top of the second funicular. Amazing views and a nice walk back down. We went on the weekend and watching the local people make human stacks was really good to watch. Again, go early as it was getting very busy around Sunday mass time.

This was a highlight of our trip to Barcelona - and we LOVED Barcelona! If you have the time be sure to make the trip to Montserrat. We did a half day tour on a bus. We saw mountains in the clouds and we saw the most famous Black Madonna in an exquisite reverential setting. We missed purchasing a ticket to hear the boys choir, but we were able to fix that at the last minute and it was a beautiful short concert in a gorgeous church. The museum is not to be missed because it contains the most beautiful artwork primarily of the divine feminine. We highly recommend a visit to Montserrat for all of these reasons and more. Gorgeous scenery getting there and returning.

Visited on a foggy day and it was beautiful, not too hot. The views are gorgeous, both architecturally and scenery wise. The buildings are so beautiful, and we luckily went on a day where it wasn’t too busy. The bus ride up the mountain to get here was a bit windy, so be cautioned if you get carsick easily. Other than that, it is a beautiful sight to visit, would recommend

Great place on the Montserrat. It is a little bit long time to get here from Barcelona city so it’s good to use tours. Of rent a car. But parking is not so bit so you will be got in ham maybe. So have good plan for here. There are good dining, ice cream shop and souvenir shops. No problem for bathroom and so on. You can get a great view from here. It is a little bit chilly compared to a base. So need clothes. I’m sure you can have great experience here! Enjoy!

Fantastic place, with an amazing view and a lot of facilities. Too crowded , full of tourists you have to park far from the abbey. The abbey is being preserved very well and all of the visitors come to see the “Madonna”. There are hotels to host those who want to stay for the night, restaurant and other shops. It is worth visiting

DIVINELY BREATHTAKING ! Words cannot describe the sheer beauty of this place. I can only say it is best served seen by yourself. Photos fail to capture it all. Knowing that you are walking among the faithful is just an experience in itself. Must see! Must see!!!

A must see when traveling to Barcelona. My tip is when you take the train from plaza espana, purchase the full ticket that gets you into the cafeteria. It's well worth the money. The salad was actually the best salad we've had in Europe. And the cafeteria is and all you can eat buffet so if you're hungry and thirsty you will score here.

Good for half day excursion from Barcelona. The hills & the cathedral & monasteries among them are beautiful & worth a visit. But it's a very small town & everything closes after 8, so it becomes really dead after that. That's why, I do not suggest staying the night there, but do a half day excursion from Barcelona. It is best to visit in the second half of the day as the weather gets better.

The most beautiful views and interesting history. We got the package, be aware you'll need about 1.5 hours to travel and back via trains, depending where you are staying in Barcelona. To see the cross, I recommend walking up towards the left side and taking the cable car down to get the best views. Make sure you wear appropriate hiking gear/shoes and bring snacks, as that is limited. This will be a full day trip. Highly recommended if you are visiting Barcelona.

It's raining too much. They said it was a drought~~ㅠ Maybe it was because it was a group tour or because it rained so much. It didn't take long to get in, but...4 stars because I couldn't see the view.

I expected to find a typical place from the 15th century and not Barcelona at rush hour full of buses, mall-style shops and people dressed as if they were going to a wedding.

The view is simply stunning. Then the abbey itself is a wonder. With so many nooks to explore and trails to hike, one can easily spend an entire day here.

We traveled by car to the place. It is not far from Barcelona and easy to get there. You have to pay for the train to take you on the top the rest is for free. You will need up to 3 hours for a good hike. The place it is worth visiting.

Well worth the visit to Montserrat! Make sure to take the R5 train and buy tickets at the vending machine from the Plaza Espanya rail station (beware of pickpockets at this station). When we went, the line to see the Black Madonna was out the door, but they let people in in waves, so if the line looks super long, I would recommend still waiting! It'll be worth it. The choir performances when went were at 1:00pm. Make sure to get there earlier to get a spot, or you'll be sitting on the cold floor. Note: Visited in Jan 2020 but catching up on reviews because- COVID.

1h from Barcelona by train or car. You can also hike on the top for few hours. Entrance is free for the church but not for the train up to the top. You will enjoy the view and the fresh air, especially during summer.

Beautiful surroundings, this place is perfect for a sanctuary. I would like to try both the cable car and train, it's a pity you cannot choose each to go there and return. But the cable car ride was pretty exciting. I suggest to wear comfortable shoes (the hills are very streep).

  • 5/5 paul b. 3 years ago on Google
What a place to enjoy the fresh air and wonderful views. A couple of restaurants, too. We visited the one nearest to the cable car, which is pretty average, but very spacious. Highly recommend this trip. Tickets for the combined rail and cable car are 23 euros return from Placa de Espanya

I can not even begin to explain what an amazing pure energy does this place have. Any time we are in Spain we are visiting Montserrat. We are usually arriving there early in the morning (just before 8) before all the busses with the tourists arrive. There is so much to do and so much to see. You would definitely need to spend the whole day in there. We would advice you to wear comfortable clothes and shoes if you are planning to go higher and see all the views Montserrat has to offer!

Always respecting the confinements, if you are touching and have a chance to go up during the week, you breathe an incredible peace! It has the disadvantage that the shops are closed and nothing but curd, but you can entertain yourself without pressure wherever you want. Yes, you have the Self service open in case you don't bring your own food. Montserrat is always worth a visit! (Original) Montserrat, sempre és especial. Sobretot si no està massificat. I loved my experience. The monastery and the basilica itself were very impressive, and I also stayed for the mass. It was beautiful, everyone was singing a song in Spanish, and although I couldn't join in, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The queue to the Black Madonna was quite rapid, it only took about 20 minutes. And the view from the top was absolutely worth it. The nature bit is also quite vivid, fascinating mountain views, and the panoramic views are absolutely astonishing.

About one hour drive from Barcelona (also accessed by train and a cable car, a funicular), high up in the mountains (1,236 metres or 4,055 ft), there is Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, colloquially known as Montserrat Monastery, established in the XIth century, about 1,100 years ago. We have visited the location in the late November, the weather was dreary, non-stop pouring rain, lots of fog, almost zero visibility of the beautiful mountainous landscape (they say that on a good day you can the Pyrenees), so we couldn't fully explore the Montserrat Abbey, but even our short visit was fully worth time and effort. The monastery is mostly famous for its Virgin of Montserrat (Mare de Déu de Montserrat in Catalan). It is widely known as a Black Madonna, hence its familiar Catalan name, La Moreneta ("the little dark-skinned one" or "the little dark one"). As the legend has it, it was carved in the early days of Christian church in Jerusalem. Other sources state it dates back to the XIIth century Romanesque period. There is a very convenient underground parking at the location in case you arrive by car. Many vendors offer local products from the surrounding farms, such as honey and cheeses. We highly recommend visiting the very old Romanesque church Santa Cecília de Montserrat, just a few minutes' drive from the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. Its recently-restored church dates from the XIth century, and is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the region. It is currently hosting the work of one of the most internationally-celebrated contemporary artists, the Irish-born American-based British painter and sculptor Sean Scully. However, you absolutely got to contact them first regarding the opening hours. According to their website, the Basilica is open daily from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm, but, probably due to the pandemics, on Wednesday, November 24th, around 11 am, the place was closed.

If you are in Barcelona, returning to your homeland without seeing Montserat is a real crime. This is really must see location.

Rainy day ! This shouldn’t stop you. We drove up to the Abbey from Barcelona on a rainy day with overcast conditions and we were not disappointed. Parking is conveniently located and the price for parking is between 6-14 euros / day depending on how close to the abbey you want to park. The shop is excellent to buy souvenirs . Abbey itself is awesome and a must visit for visitors to Barcelona. Would have preferred a sunny day if I had the option

One of my favorite place in Catalonia. It has so much history and art work. The Brown virgin is precious. If you plan to visit this place, make sure you set an appointment to see the virgen and the interior of the cathedral, and expect long queues to get in but it's worth the wait.

What a phenomenal place. Set high up, the monastery is truly a sight to behold. From the breathtaking views on the train ride up, the walk around the Basillica, the voices of the boys choir, the sheer awe-inspiring size, and tranquil setting, it really is a must visit for those visiting anywhere nearby. The shops were well priced and varied in stock, the museum fascinating, the farmers market superb and the option to send a postcard from the post office is a great little extra.

I took part of a tour with soft hiking. It was great to go in early morning, we were there by 9.30am,as there are less people. After visiting the monastery we took the funicular to the top, amazing views,as if on top of world. Then walked down to the monastery. Tried the cheese and honey which is the local snack. The cheese is like cottage cheese. If you want to see the Madonna, there's a separate queue and it costs 8€.

I was expecting to enjoy this excursion the least, but it was definitely a highlight of my trip. We were able to watch the boys choir perform and their voices were incredible. The interior of the church is beautiful. My favorite part was taking a tram into the mountains and taking in the views. Some of my best pictures were taken on that mountain. 10/10 would recommend you visit the Abbey.

The tourists are much more than I expected. However, it is a wonderful place to visit. Starting from Barcelona city, you may take a train and transfer to cable car or another mountain train to visit here. It takes around 90~100 minutes. Besides the old monastery, the mountain around is also beautiful. If you are a climber, you may feel so excited to find out the route on the big wall.

Short story: Visiting Montserrat this day wasn’t planned, personally I didn’t feel like going and all through the ride I slept .Upon opening my eyes I saw one of the most beautiful views ever 😍..immediately I got pumped about seeing everything. The view is absolutely amazing and being here gives some cool ,historic ,spiritual vibes which words can explain but only to be experienced. This place should be stared as *MUST VISIT *

Very pleasant trip to Montserrat, breathtaking views ❤️ there is quite a lot to see here, so one visit may not be enough! We also went and sat out at one of the cafés, which also had some beautiful views. This is definitely worth a visit if you are nearby. We came on a coach trip, so we had tickets to see the Black Madonna, the monastery is beautiful. I would come again. Although I probably wouldn't queue up again to see The Black Madonna, as this did take quite a bit of time.

  • 5/5 Dixie W. 8 months ago on Google
A long day to and from Barcelona. The Black Madonna is beautiful. The scenery to and from Barcelona to go there are awesome. It takes a couple of hours to arrive, visit takes several hours then ride back another couple hours. We were exhausted. We were exhausted once we got back, but it was worth the trip.

The church at Montserrat is a unique and special destination that offers visitors a combination of history, religion, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. We chose to take a bus tour from Barcelona to get here. We had a few hours in Montserrat to explore the buildings and the views from up on top of the mountain before heading back to Barcelona. It was the perfect amount of time.

To see what has been accomplished building this monastery is quite astonishing. The work started in the 13th century. The view is amazing. 80 monks still live there. There is a modern hotel there and the retail stores, that bring in the money to maintain the structures, monks and artifacts. Locals are allowed to set up along the way in to sell their products, mainly food products they make. I recommend doing this visit with a guide as you will get way more information about the place. Either way you will not be disappointed.

Great spot although extremely touristic. Parking during weekends is a challenge. It’s also a great starting point for numerous hikes to the Montserrat mountain.

  • 5/5 Kajik K. 7 months ago on Google
If you got a car I'd definitely suggest you to visit the monastery. Parking was €7 and it was easy to find and the entrance to the cathedral was €6 for adults and €5 for 7-16yo. Preferably buy tickets in advance.

You'll want to spend more time than you have. We spent three hours here and were barely able to take in the highlights. The Abbey, of course, is stunning inside. And the views from the mountain are picture perfect. We did a short hike but definitely wished we could have spent more time and hiked farther and explored some of the other buildings here.

The monastery is pretty, the church has a lovely golden aura. But it is set in absolutely jaw-dropping scenery, the sharp peaks are simply astonishing.

  • 5/5 Donald S. 7 months ago on Google
This is a very special place. Take your time. Go early, get your tickets to tour the church asap. Go to the top top top on the tram and spend at least an extra hour up there. You can spend hours hicking! This is a full day trip. Go to the bar at the train station while you wait. Great people!

While visiting Barcelona, Spain this past May '23 , we went on a day tour of Montserrat Mountain via a Funicular car ride. Very comfortable and quick. When we arrived atop the Mountain and toured the area. The Benedictine Monastery and Cathedral / Church also houses one of the Oldest Schools of Music and Choir in Europe We also decided to take the moderate hike the area on a developed trail to the Cross for Saint Michael, approx. 1 mile. Stunning views ! The Monastery Museum houses many works from famous artists as Monet, Giordano, Dalí and El Greco The area atop the Mountain has a cafeteria/ restaurant and gift shop.

The view and backdrop are epic! We did not pay to enter the cathedral. The free access was enough for the family. The ride up is absolutely beautiful. Totally worth the visit.

This was part of an organised day trip that took in the delights of Montserrat, with a cheeky drop in to a local wine maker. It's an over used cliche but this place is jaw droppingly gorgeous. Our tour guides were able to add 'colour' and facts to the visit, but made for a fun and informative day out.

This is a great place to visit. Spectacular buildings, location and view. I'm not religious, but I can appreciate what is created here and the culture of this place. We were on a tour which had some issues separately.

Of course this place is beautiful...But we paid € 18 for a combination ticket. Queued for 45 minutes to see the Black Madonna of Catalunya. Just when we almost could get to the next stage of the queue they let a coach load just walk in without any wait. Our slot was at 14.15. We queued till 14.30 had to leave the queue as we needed to get to our coach at 15.00. Very disappointing!

Take at least half day if not a full day trip here, sit on the bench and just enjoy the wiev and scenery.

Stunning view from height. Beautiful skyline when looking at finger like summits. Magnificent. Highly recommend! Parking at €7 for whole day. Paid €6 per adult to see the ground floor of Basillica. If pay €18 can visit 5 places

Beautiful spot, stunning place to visit for the day. Parking is crazy, if you don’t get there super early you will be waiting for a long time. Parking is 7 euros for a car. We ended up parking a couple km from the entrance.

We got the rack railway up to the Abbey and admired the buildings and stunning location. We then the Sant Joan funicular up to the top to see the site from a different perspective and look at the impressive natural landscape. More than worth taking a day trip to this site.

We took the Montserrat Monastery & Hiking Experience. It was fantastic. Our guide Roger was the best. He did such a good job of explaining the history, the geology, and the nature. He even spotted a wild goat for us. Hiking was almost all steep downhill, so make sure you are in shape for that. Beautiful vista's. Bus was very comfortable and driver was very skilled. Great value.

It is fascinating to see such a beautiful place OT the top of the mountain, peaceful, beautiful, artistic and Holy. Must visit when in Barcelona, it really worth the trip, About an hour away from Barcelona, the whole trip is about 5 hours, with 3 to spend there. Don't forget to support the locals and buy their products and food

Great monastery high up on a mountain this old old monastery sits surrounded with gorgeous views Offers great places to hike Food is available and many vendors are offering delicious local cheese pastries and sweets items made locally at very comfortable prices The monastery is beautiful Has a great collection of old religious artifacts We attended math and the service was magical I felt so special to attend and had been given the opportunity to be there.

The monastery is located in a very cool place. Parking costs €7. We didn't buy a ticket to enter the monastery, so we enjoyed the surroundings of the monastery. There are several viewing platforms and a large courtyard in front of the monastery, which is free to enter. If you are already going there, I recommend hiking in the mountains, the trails start at the monastery.

It’s really worth the visit. You can get take walking all the way up, by train or by bus. Outside the monastery there is a small food market, TRY THE HONEY, it is the best I’ve tried in my life and not more expensive than any other great quality product in a bio store.

Made the trek out to Montserrat during my week in Barcelona. I timed it so I could check out the boys choir (1p each Thursday), then I saw the Black Madonna and went to the museum. First, the views are awesome! I loved going up in the cable car and then back down via train. The church is cool and I liked seeing the Black Madonna. The line for the latter seems long, but it goes quickly. The museum was nice and not busy, plus I love Caravaggio so I had to see this version of St Jerome.
