The history is so sad, but the space is so peaceful and beautiful! There's a lovely soap shop located close by I recommend checking out too. This is one of my favorite places in Barcelona.

Very picturesque square, a few steps away from Barcelona Cathedral. It can be accessed both from Carrer de Sant Sever and Plaça de Garriga i Bachs/Carrer del Bisbe/Carrer De Montjuïc Del Bisbe. We stayed in the wonderful Hotel Neri Relais et Châteaux which is right on the corner of Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. Also, the restaurant "a", opens into the square, on its one side. Even though those who are well familiar with the history of Barcelona, know that the place is far from authentic, with some houses having been moved into Plaça de Sant Neri from other locations, it is pretty much the case with dozens of other locations in Barri Gòtic. The school, still in operation today, was the site of one of the most tragic events during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) in Barcelona. In January 1938, the fascist regime of Franco, used its Italian allies', Mussolini's airforce to bomb the location. About 30 civilians, mostly children, were killed in the brutal attack. The traces of the shrapnel from the bombing are seen today in the school's wall. During certain school recreational activities, with the children playing outside, the square is cordoned off.

A tiny plaza like there are hundreds of all over Europe. The place is small with several trees that give it a good amount of shade in the summer. The architecture of the townhouses is pretty simple and forgettable , there is however, a simple baroque church the façade of which is scarred by bullet holes from the Spanish civil war, left in place as a reminder of the struggle. There is a restaurant in the plaza as well. Overall a nice, out of the way place to relax and have a beer, nothing mind blowing though.

A square that (probably due to its tragic history) seems to have an eerie feel about it that just made me come to a stop as I was walking through. It has a fountain and a few trees in the square and there's an old church bordering the square as well as a bar. It was extremely quiet during the morning when I was there, not a single other person at all.

The history of this place is enough to provide an ambiance that is both thought provoking and relaxing. The site of two bombs during the civil war that killed over 30 people, the damage to the walls from the bombing has been preserved. With the school, old church and small water fountain it is a place to visit not only because of the history but also because of its isolated and 'tucked away' feel. There is a hotel with a bar / cafe so a stop for 30 minutes is a must.

(Translated by Google) Charming square with a baroque church in the Gothic Quarter. On the walls of the Church of San Felipe Neri you can still see the redoubts of the shrapnel of a bomb launched by the aviation of the Spanish fascist side during the Civil War (Original) Encantadora plaza con iglesia barroca en el Barrio Gótico. Beautiful spot, although marked by the horrors of war and the death of children during the Spanish Civil War. Destruction from the bomb that impacted here is still noticeable in the walls of the Churh. Definitely worth a stroll to enjoy a little peace and contemplation.

My favorite spot in Barcelona. Many layers of history and come at any time of day and you'll see a completely different ambience from the next. It's always so beautiful. Also in early June the trees snow flower petals and it's magic.

An important piece of history easily missed next to Barcelona's Cathedral. Located in a cosy square around the city's former Jewish Quarter, San Felip Neri displays evidence of Civil War bombings and the tragical times that followed afterwards.

Beautiful and sad place in the centre of the city, full of history. The minute you walk into the square you are faced with a feeling of what has happened there. A must visit also for the stories of Gaudi's daily visits in the church located at the square. The southern exit leads to another small square hidden form noise and people.

It's a really cozy historic and cultural location, however, right now it's pretty poorly mantained. The fountain is really smelly, the floor is really dirty, there's too many pigeons and it kinda lost the magic it used to have. We tried to take a break there for 20 minutes, but we had to leave because pigeons were annoying us asking for food

Easy to transport you to another era, years ago if you wait a long time in it and contemplate it calm and relaxed while listening to the noise of the water from the fountain. Magical place for me. Fácil transportarte a otra época, años atrás si aguardas un buen rato en ella y la contemplas tranquilo y relajado mientras escuchas el ruido del agua de la fuente. Lugar mágico para mi. "An enjoyable and calm square in the heart of Barcelona", would be the headline of this comment. Impossible to not get in love with this small square just behind of main Cathedral and close to city hall. Unfortunately there are no public seats to stay more time relaxing there. It is also the place of one of saddest moments of Barcelona when 80 years ago in the civil war a bomb fallen down here and killed many children in the school in front of square.

To me, this is the most iconic place in Barcelona (not mentioning the fact that evanescence's my immortal ha been shot here). It's the hart of the Barrio Gotico : very quiet, very intimate and, at night, when none's around you can hear the sound of the small fountain in the middle of the square. The Neri's hotel is just overlooking Sant Felip Square.

A small plaque the size of a pizza box serves as a haunting reminder of how 42 people mostly children were killed here by bombardment. A calm and quiet Plaça provides a peaceful break amidst the bustling Gothic Quarter. Enjoy a delicious gelato and slowly take in its history and beauty.

Beautiful square and with a long history, the most important and sad is the marks in the walls of the buildings from the Spanish Guerra civil the people were shot and executed from the the dictator troops and from the bomb's from Germán and Italian planes killing a lot of children. The square is located behind the catedral unknown to many visitors and locals alike.

  • 5/5 Tracy Y. 1 year ago on Google
Witness the history left behind by the bombings - which seemed so far away coming from other modern city. Next to it was a school that killed 40 over children, as mentioned by our food tour guide.

  • 5/5 Jerry T. 1 year ago on Google
Quite stirring to see the “scars” on the stone walls, but nonetheless a fairly peaceful square to reflect on the history and what happened there. The area now has a school that I’m not sure is active at this time…

My favourite square in Barcelona. When we first visited Barcelona about 10 years ago it was a secret and hidden place - it is not anymore, but it is still charming. This year we also visited the church which was a very nice experience, quiet and beautiful and full of history.

  • 5/5 Kimberley S. 8 months ago on Google

  • 5/5 Fede G. 6 months ago on Google
One of the most beautiful squares in the city. Although with a sad history. A bomb dropped in the middle of the civil war killed many children.
