You have to have a ticket to get into the gate to get close to the park, then you also have to have a ticket to go into the park, then if you want a sunrise or sunset tour you have to get separate tickets for each of those, and all the tickets are only good for one day. I went in December and it was really hot and really humid. Also, if you go on a sunset or sunrise tour you should know you have about a 50% chance of not seeing a sunset or sunrise because of the fog. It is very beautiful and interesting to see so I do suggest going if you are considering it.

This is by far the biggest temple I have seen in the Mayan world with so many ruins, so many temples, so much climbings, so much of history. I took the 6am tour to avoid crowds, and we also happened to see Mayan ceremony which apparently happens just 4 times a year

A must visit!!! The energy you feel in this incredible place is truly magical. What an amazing grasp of the history and culture of the Mayan people. We had an amazing guide so his knowledge of the Mayan peoples was appreciated. Plenty of walking so make sure you wear comfortable shoes! And keep cool water.

Do not stay in tikal. Do a day trip from Guatemala city DNT need to get a hotel. The site is beautiful the people that work at the site are not the best. They demand that you have a tour guide for sunrise and sunset which right now you only get about 20 to 30 minutes in the park during sunrise and sunset of light time otherwise it is pitch Black. They demand that you have a guide even if you're staying in to call and the guy doesn't speak English. Why would any person speaking English want a guy that doesn't speak their language to take them on a tour. The people are rude and condescending when they speak to you. We noticed that if you are Guatemalan you didn't have to walk in they actually drove you and you only had to walk in if you are a foreigner. And the Foreigner already pays 10-11 times more for the ticket than the local and as a foreigner you do not get a ride into the park. The items being sold can all be bought in Guatemala City or Antigua for a huge fraction of the cost. Do not go shopping here. If you can't do stairs I wouldn't recommend even going.

Beautiful place and totally worth a visit. It's a very big site and there is a lot to see. Bought tickets online to avoid a line but there is still a bit of a wait to enter. There's quite a lot of walking needed to see everything but it's mostly in shade and the paths are pretty good. Definitely worth seeing as much as possible as every area is interesting.

We took the sunrise tour of Tikal which starts with a very early morning that saw us getting out of bed around 3am. We hiked in with flashlights or torches if you prefer. It was a very clear night so the view of the stars was amazing. We reached the 4th temple around 5am and found a spot on the stairs to wait for the sun to rise and the jungle to start waking up. We enjoyed views of the stars as we began to hear howler monkeys birds and other creachers waking up. The sunrise was beautiful. Eventually we made our way down the staircase again and our guide walked us through the rest of the ruins and explained a little bit about the Mayan civilization. Well worth making the trip. As we drove out around 8am and saw all the tour busses pouring in it was nice to know we beat the crowds and the heat. Definitely a lot walking so be ready for that, and lots of roots and rough terrain. For those of you worried about the safety of walking through the jungle in the dark, we felt very safe the entire time.

Different prices for tourists vs nationals. 150Q for tourists. You buy tickets at gate, from gate to park parking lot is about 20 minutes or so. We did not get to explore much, just the main temples because the park is huge and we took our 4 children. Definitely takes about 3 days of exploring to really see and enjoy everything. There are plenty wildlife, it's the jungle so makes sense. We saw and heard howler monkeys, spider monkeys, spiders, sompopo ants, different birds, nasua and peacocks roaming around. There is a museum we unfortunately didn't get to see and gift shops. We went in beginning of June and it was pretty warm and some humidity. We had just been to Rio Dulce and the humidity was uncomparable. Rio Dulce was significantly more humid. Our guide Cecilia was absolutely wonderful and patient. I did however overhear some of the other guides being quite rude to tourists, hurrying them or rushing them hardly allowing them to take sips of water. Cecilia was neither inpatient nor unpleasant. There is a restaurant by parking lot and also 2 lodges that do not have a/c due to being inside the national park property. There is a restaurant at the gate as well, a bit overpriced. Unable to find it on Google maps however.

This is an incredible archaeological site that is a must see! I spent 2 days in the park which was more than enough time. At the entrance you'll see a large truck that will take you to the grand Plaza.. Take it! Save yourself the legwork! If you have time definitely do the sunset and sunrise...

One of the lost mystical places on Earth. Guatemala preserved a magnificent Mayan site with dozens of pyramids. Many pyramids were left under a protective layer of soil, grass, and trees, naturally covered the walls of those historic buildings.

This place is one of the great wonders of the world and it is just beautiful. The architecture, the huge land the rich history, you will love it here. I highly recommend going to Temple 3 at 4 am to watch the sunrise, it will be the most magical moment you will ever experience. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and it should go without saying thay there will be a lot of walking involved.

Tikal may not be the biggest... or the best preserved... Maya city, but it is impressive nonetheless. I would love to see the excavations continued to discover the huge, still hidden, remnants of the city and culture. Get there early in the morning, plan to spend at least the day.

Tikal National Park is worth the journey into the northern Guatemalan Rainforest. Amazing animals can be seen including toucans, monkeys, and even little furry coati's. The main pyramids are stunning. Tikal can be explored for 4-10 hours in a day without seeing the entire sight. Recommend getting a tour guide who can describe the important history of the historical structures. Food, drinks, and seating areas are available through out the entire Tikal National Park. Check out some of my Tikal photos.

Absolutely beautiful Mayan ruins. 150 quetzales for foreign tourists, which is so much more expensive than for Guatemalans, but it is fair and it is worth it. I appreciated that. Help is very friendly everywhere. I was with family who knew how to get around, otherwise I'd strongly recommend a tour because Tikal is huge and it is easy to get lost. Be ready to climb, but many have stairs now for safety reasons. It still is challenging if you aren't really fit, but worth it.

No trip to the Peten Guatemala area would be complete without visiting Tikal. The best Mayan Ruins available to see and still able to climb most. If you go, make sure you have your passport and currently 150 Q"s as entry fee. Take water and a. Great pair of hiking or walking shoes. Usually takes 4 hours to see most of it.

Tikal is one of the largest and most iconic Maya cities and an incredible place to visit. The temples and pyramids are stunning, although some nerve is required to climb the rather precarious wooden staircases, especially up Temple IV (for the iconic Star Wars view). It is a huge site and you would probably need days to do justice to everything, and even the basic tour easily fills a day. While it is possible to go independently, it is easier and safer to go on an organised trip or with a guide, as the process of buying tickets is not entirely straightforward and only around 20% of the site has been excavated, so people can (and do) get lost in the dense jungle. Trips can easily be arranged in Flores. Most importantly, take plenty of water (there are stalls inside from which you can buy cold drinks in quetzals or US dollars), suncream and a raincoat, as the weather can be very changeable in the rainy season and there are not many places to shelter.

Excellent! Well worth the visit from Belize. Get a good private guide. There are some waiting at the gate if you want to save money. Buy your tickets online to save time and not have to exit your car on the way in. You can buy drinks and snacks from the pavilion inside. Do not need bug spray in the dry season….although every tour company tells you to bring it. Climb the temples….great views…and most have wooden stairs to climb that are not that difficult if you take your time.

Very nicely kept park and Mayan site. Our guided tour from flores was 125q each for 4 in an a/c mini bus. Plus the entry fee which you can buy online in advance. It was too hot for trekking gear but the paths are such that you don't need it. The structures were impressive but some climbing for views needed. Reasonably priced drinks available and a few commodores. We saw a few animals too some more welcome than others!

I had a blast walking through the national park. I joined a tour for 150 Q that included transportation; park entry was an additional 150 Q. Highly recommend the tour guide; he spoke English and a second guide spoke spanish. Most of the ruins are still buried under the jungle and will remain so to minimize environmental disturbance. Tikal National Park in Guatemala is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its ancient Mayan ruins. Spanning 576 square kilometers of lush rainforest, it showcases towering pyramids, temples, and wildlife, offering an immersive journey into Mayan history amidst breathtaking natural beauty.

Year 2010- Was here many years back is a great place to visit this outside museum . I highly recommended this location , it rains or at time is really Hot . Be prepared for walking. Don’t let’s your children , teenagers run alone many has gotten lost . Cultures Mayas Official name Tikal National Museum. Latin America and the Caribbean Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya.[5] Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BC, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century AD.[6] Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

One of the most special places on the planet. Walking through the lush rainforest to see stone temples creep into view is the closest many of us will come to the feeling of exploring a new frontier. Climbing those temples until you're high above the canopy to take in the sprawling view of Tikal is both uplifting and humbling.

It is in Guatemala, in the middle of the Petén Forest, and receives thousands of tourists each year. It was undoubtedly one of the great Mayan metropolises in its heyday, the so-called classical period, between 250 and 900 A.D. It has been recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1979 and houses the largest Mayan pyramids, like the Jaguar Temple. Tikal (/tiˈkɑːl/) (Tik’al in modern Mayan orthography) is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala.[2] It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, the site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BCE, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900 CE. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century CE. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century. Tikal is the best understood of any of the large lowland Maya cities, with a long dynastic ruler list, the discovery of the tombs of many of the rulers on this list and the investigation of their monuments, temples and palaces.

?Tikal Temple I? ⚫Temple I is a stepped pyramid structure that is dated to approximately 732 AD. ⚫It is one of the major structures at Tikal, one of the largest cities and archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Mesoamerica. ⚫Tikal was also called Yax Mutal and located in Guatemala. ⚫In 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ⚫Temple I is also known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar because of a lintel that represents a king sitting upon a jaguar throne. ⚫The temple rises in nine stepped levels, which may be symbolic of the nine levels of the underworld. ⚫The temple rises 47 meters (154 ft) over the Great Plaza. ⚫The structure is a funerary temple associated with Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, he probably planned the building of the temple long before his death.

This is one of the most beautiful and magical places we have ever been. The history is amazing and the ruins themselves are jaw droppingly spectacular. This will take a day if you want to see everything. A guide is also very helpful. Not for getting around but learning about the history. There is so much to know. There is tons of wildlife to see as well. There is a resturant before you get to the first ruins, which I highly recommend. It served the best food I have had in Guatemala. Sun screen and bug spray are highly recommended. You will not regret this visit.

Commercialised tourist machinery in the worst possible way. Staff is unfriendly, if not hostile. Some rules are only designed to rip off the guests, like, e.g., you can only enter with your 100 GTQ sunset ticket if you also hire a guide (he asked 350 GTQ extra!). Temples can only be climed on extra wooden stairs which does not give an authentic experience of the site or any building. A real annoyance. Limit your visit to half a day or just for sunset (that is the highlight). Pictures shows our rip-off guide. I visited 2 other Mayan Sites, both were more authentic, pleasant and impressive.

Incredible. Don't miss it. It stands apart from other Mayan ruins with its wildlife and jungle setting. Take all day and grab a guide, because the history is incredible, and our guide was really good at spotting the native animals for us.

If you have any interest in the ancient Mayan civilization, you need to add Tikal in Guatemala to your list of historical places to visit around the world. The Central American country is dotted with classical Mayan structures and ruins, among which the ancient city of Tikal is the most preserved and popular tourist attraction. It is located in a tropical rainforest that has now become the part of Tikal National Park. Many archaeologists believe the ancient Tikal Temple dates back to 7 BC. However, historians believe Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 AD, as it was the capital of the most powerful empire. The ruins were was discovered in the 1840s. In 1970, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.

The highlight of our trip to Guatemala was visiting this awesome place. Not only did we learn so much about the Mayan culture and their history, but we got to step foot in and frolic around in the same places they did and still do today. Truly an amazing experience and worth every penny spent.

An amazing place and one that I have been wanting to visit and finally did and was on my bucket list. My son, who isn't in awe too much, was here. Also a photographers heaven with all sorts of birds and other animals to take photos of in addition to the beautiful structures and temples. I HIGHLY recommend hiring a guide. You will get more from your time here. Additionally, I also HIGHLY recommend getting up early for the sunrise at temple IV. It is an enchanting experience. It can get quite hot after about 1030am so doing everything in the morning will allow you to enjoy everything a little more.

This is a huge site! We definitely recommend doing an earlier tour so there are less people. We did the 4.30am departure from Flores which wasn’t the sunrise tour and worked out well. There’s also lots of wildlife around: Spider monkeys, white nosed coatis, and lots of birds. The ruins are impressive and some you can climb to get panoramic views. Do your own research beforehand or bring a guidebook as the guides knowledge really does vary sometimes if they don’t know an answer they’ll just make one up.

The most incredible place to visit a must on every adventurers list, we stayed at the hotel in the park, it was so easy to visit the site plus to experience waking up with the jungle on one of the pyramids was an experience of a life time, the Howler monkeys far out!

Wish we had 2 days to explore these ruins. They are our favorite Mayan ruins right after Palenque ruins. Make sure you put on bug spray and have it on you to top up, especially early morning. Climb all the other view points too, the tallest ruin is more impressive from the other viewpoints 👉

Amazing Mayan ruins national park! Though the entrance fee is a bit confused and they didn’t accept any card at the entrance, we were able to book online on the spot using the Wifi signal shared by one of the guards there. For foreign visitors the entrance ticket is equivalent to US$20/person! (As of the end of Jan. 2924)… The cost is worthwhile considering the fact that the roads going into the national park is well paved and maintained… Amazing Mayan ruins spread around inside the national park, the grand plaza is definitely a must visit, and in my opinion you must climb up the stairs at Temple IV and see the top of the forest overlooking 1/2 of the national park landscape!

Your in for a real treat if you decide to go to Tikal - I’ve actually been there 5x and I love it ! Every time I have gone it has been a great experience, and have had the opportunity to do both. Stay over night and so the one day trip due to not having enough time. I totally recommend it. For one Guatemala is a Colorful and great place to visit, the people are kind , the food is good , and the prices are more than fair. Your pretty much guaranteed to see different animals there and will enjoy it very much. If your able to stay the night over I recommend that as well. There are plenty of things to do. While your there Guatemala don’t even think about skipping going to Panajachel- Lake Atitlan it is one of the most Beautiful Lakes in the world ! Antigua and , IRTRA are very cool to visit

I went 10 yrs ago. No guide. Glad I didn't have one although were I to go again I might get one. Virtually empty when I went. Being unencumbered by groups or a guide I felt like I was truly exploring something mysterious and unknown. Beautiful but imperious; you definitely get the sense that this was a seat of power for an empire (vs, say Machu Picchu, which is a far more spiritual and reflective place). Definitely recommend and hope to return some day. FYI: you should know some Spanish before heading down there.

Buying ALL the tickets at the park entrance is very far from the registration point and there is no internal transport. buy everything (Cash only) in Quetzales, 150 Q, per day visited, 30 Q for the museums and 100 for the sunrise visit (recommended to stay 2 days to visit the Park well), in one of the 3 hotels that are in the Park. The tours that sell for a day are very short and the guides take you at their very fast pace and you can not enjoy also they do not show you even half of the park that is charming, cool all the places on the map, they are many and long ago heat so I recommend going 2 days minimum. the sighting of animals is impressive, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, deer, giant rodents, thousands of birds, and if you are lucky you will see a jaguar or a cougar. Recommended to do the sunrise tour it is spectacular to see the sunrise from Temple IV, with the awakening of the brutal sound of the howler monkeys. (Translated by Google) Fascinating, the tour that we contracted left at different times, you can go see the sunrise or sunset (which is more expensive) or there are other times in the morning and afternoon. I recommend the 6am one, it is early, cheaper, and you don't suffer as much from the heat. Bring water and something to eat in case you get hungry inside the park! I saw tourists who were doing the tours in vans, they did not tell me about that but to find out for the elderly. If it is possible to do the tour with a guide, maybe one will not go again and the details that you miss by not hiring one. If you move away from the road a bit you can see monkeys howling. As for the ruins: Imposing, well cared for and very clean. Located in a remote part of the rainforest in northeastern Guatemala, Tikal was once an important Mayan cultural center. The pre-Colombian history of Tikal stretches for around fifteen hundred years from 500 BC until the site was abandoned due to still unknown reasons around the year 1000 AD. At Tikal the visitor can witness both sacred temples and monuments as well as secular structures such as habitats for common citizens. Also, a mesoamerican ball court is to be found on this vast area which was once the home of more than fifty thousand people. The region’s rich history has been meticulously recorded on ancient stela found throughout Tikal. From this history many aspects of this civilization can be deduced, including the long line of dynastic rulers who each in turn reigned over the ancient city. Much of this history can be explored with a guide to the site. Much of Tikal – ruins as well as the surrounding jungle – can also be explored independently on foot. Many of the old temples and other structures of Tikal are accessible and can be climbed without much effort. While enjoying and exploring the grounds howler monkeys can be heard howling and rustling in the dense canopy of the rainforest. And magnificent views of other structures sticking out of the jungle can be had atop of some of the many accessible temples and pyramids of Tikal. While Tikal was mysteriously abandoned more than a thousand years ago, it was rediscovered in the mid-nineteenth century. The excavation of the enormous area is still on going, which is a in itself a fascinating aspect of of a visit here.

A bucket list destination for sure. Deep in the Guatamalan jungle, Tikal is remote and hauntingly beautiful. The initial experience is a dramatic ancient plaza with a pyramid overlooking several buildings and stelae. The scale of the place hits when you climb the pyramid and see others overlooking the canopy. As each one seems more impressive than the last, it will dawn on you that Tikal was once a huge city and the mystery of its decline will capture your immagination.

Great park, a must see. Road getting there sucks, way too many potholes. They do not take card and there is NO ATM there, so bring cash.

An absolute must visit even if you're only remotely interested in Mayan history & archeology. We booked the sunrise tour (incl park ticket, 250Q pp) and the obligatory guide (15USD pp) and it was well worth it. The feeling of climbing temple IV and seeing the sun rise over the jungle with the sound of howlermonkeys is something we'll never forget. The sunrise tour combined with our own visit to some other temples took us 5 hours in total.

We did a day trip mid-May with MayaWalk Tours from San Ignacio to Tikal Mayan Ruin/National Park in Guatemala. Guatemala recently lifted their COVID19 restrictions. It was well worth the trip visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tikal is known for its massive pyramid temples, monumental plazas, palaces and stelae. The national park also had lots of wild life like coatis. This National Park is spectacular and we were glad that we can climb several of the magnificent temples. I really wanted to visit Tikal Mayan Ruin in Guatemala while we were in San Ignacio, Belize since the border crossing was only 7 miles away. Although we have a rental car for a week, we decided to go with a tour agency and so glad we did since it was stress-free and we had a tour guide to learn about Guatemala and Tikal. We lucked out that we were the only couple and had a private tour. Thanks to MayaWalk Tours for making our trip stress free and memorable!

A great way to experience history. It’s an all day experience with plenty of walking so water is highly recommended. Being able to climb the temple and view the top of the trees is an experience I wish everyone could see. Truly amazing once in a lifetime chance.

One of the best Mayan / Aztec ruins you can visit. There is quite a bit of walking as it's a big place so the guide is very useful and there is plenty of time to find out interesting stuff. It's also a very good place to see Toucans and other animals.

There's really nothing like it. Besides the utterly amazing Mayan ruins, there is an outstanding array of plants and animals. We encountered both soccer and howler monkeys, piloted, toucans, and countless cool plants and trees. We've been here multiple times, with and without guides, and we really recommend guides. It's helpful if you have someone who can translate from Spanish so you can absorb the massive amount of information they have to share. It's a lot of walking, and typically very hot, so being plenty of water, a hat, and your camera. It's worth visiting more than one day if time permits.

The tour with Tikal Go Tours from Flores to Tikal was an all in all very positive experience. Both the driver and guide were very sweet and good at what they did. We learned a lot of interesting things about Tikal and the Mayans, and the guide answered all our questions. One of us had a little too many questions and I would have liked it if there had been a bit more quiet, so that we could fully take in the sounds of the jungle, the trees, the animals, and a chance to take in the fact that we were in a stunning place that was built thousands of years ago. A place that is still it fully uncovered. It's like being in a proper Indiana Jones movie. Although Star Wars was filmed here. I did get a bit of actual silence when we went off the track. That was very nice. After having been to Chichen Itzá the week before, I was not quite prepared for just how big Tikal was and the fact that it was a proper hike through the jungle. There's a lot of walking, very easy access if you keep to the made pathways. The walk up the temples is a bit strenuous. However, if you're prepared for it, it is absolutely amazing. So wear comfortable shoes. If you have asthma, bring an inhaler and just take it one step at a time. It is absolutely worth the effort. The temples are so well preserved and absolutely stunning! The views from on top is breathtaking! I highly recommend you going up them. And I definitely recommend you going on a tour with a guide that can tell you about the place, instead of going on your own. And Tikal Go Tours is a very good option. After the tour we had lunch in the jungle. They made an effort and made food that was catered to my dietary needs. I highly recommend visiting Tikal on this tour.
