Lake Atitlan is beautiful, and there’s plenty to do. Panajachel is a good landing point, and seems to be the main hub for catching a boat across the lake. San Pedro is where you’ll find bars and parties, whereas next door San Juan is quieter and filled with coffee and art. The views are spectacular no matter where you are on the lake 🙂 I recommend hopping from town to town to see everything this area has to offer.

Lake Atitlan is the deepest lake in Central America. Encircled by the volcanoes of Toliman, Atitlan and San Pedro, there are Mayan villages around inhabited by small communities of farmers and fishermen. Some of these have become tourist spots filled with galleries, handicraft shops and cafes. The beautiful scenic surrounding of lake, volcano, nature, boat ride, rustic local ambience created an unforgettable tour experience.

Coming from a city I had to definitely adjust but living here for a week taught me about minimalism, essentialism and how to connect better with nature. Granted I was still clung to my phone in order to get around and capture the beauty of the place but I still learned alot I will keep with me.

This is a must-see during your stay in Guatemala. There are 13 towns around the lake, we stayed at Selina hostel in Panajachel. This is one of the most magical places I've ever seen. We met several other Americans and Canadians during our stay that visited and decided not to come home. We wanted to do the same.

Absolutely beautiful lake with an incredible view of Volcán San Pedro. There are a lot of English-speaking tourists in Panajachel and the surrounding area, so it is relatively safe. A lot of great places to eat around, although some of the street vendors are said to be unsafe for tourists to eat at. Ziplining in the nearby (inactive) volcano's, a boat tour around the lake, and a visit to the coffee plantation near San Juan La Laguna are great things to do in the area. Also, hit up Galería Imox in San Juan La Laguna if you want some incredible paintings of lake Atitlan and Volcán San Pedro.

Csodálatos élményként fogadja a hajósokat a tó északi oldalán emelkedő vulkáni kúpok látványa.Nekem a balatonfelvidék tanuhegyeit juttatták eszembe.

(21.05.2022) The lake and the surrounding nature is beautiful, but there is a lot of garbage and dog excrements all around. Boat men rip off the tourists and some tuk-tuks are driven by kids.

(Translated by Google) Visiting this site has been one of my great experiences. Tour the lake by boat and see the volcanoes around. incredible sunsets. People are very warm. Although it is not a cheap place. Locals overcharge some things, like transfers. Getting to that place is easy if you take a direct Transport from some main city. Preferably a private van. Otherwise you have to take several buses from various places. About 5 different maybe. And they are not in very good maintenance condition. They drive with little caution and with many passengers. However the experience is worth it. There are many places to stay. Hostel type. Where they serve you very well and the restaurants have a view of the lake. You must bring extra money because the crafts are beautiful.

(Translated by Google) The most important hydrographic accident in the department of Sololá in Guatemala is Lake Atitlán, which is one of the main economic sources of the department, since in addition to being a very attractive tourist center, it serves as a great commercial support. The volcanoes of Atitlán (3,537 masl [1]), Tolimán (3,158 masl) and San Pedro volcano (3,020 masl) rise up the lake. The lake is located 1560 meters above sea level and is 18 km long. Its depth, which varies in many points, is unknown, however more than 350 meters of depth have been probed. Toponymy The meaning of the word «Atitlán» is etymologically derived from Nahuatl, it is a clustered toponym that is structured as follows: Atl means «Water», Titlan means «between». The word Atl («water») loses its ending «tl» to unite with the word titlan («between»), therefore, the word «Atitlán» is translated as «Between the waters». Origin Edit Regarding the origin of Lake Atitlán, there are two currents of opinion. One of them believes that the lake is an old dead crater and the other that the rise of volcanoes interrupted the course of the three rivers that come from the north, which, when gathering their waters in the place, gave origin to the lake. The lake has no visible drainage. In addition, it is said that where the lake is, there was an island that was the epicenter of Mayan activity in Pre-classical times (600 BC - 250 AD), in a settlement called Pajaibal, since in that time the Mayans were grouped into regions. Several towns that surround the lake have the names of saints: Santa Catarina Palopó, San Antonio Palopó, San Lucas Tolimán, Santiago Atitlán, San Pedro La Laguna, San Juan La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna, San Marcos La Laguna, Santa Cruz La Laguna , San Francisco Panajachel or Panajachel, Santa Clara La Laguna and others. You can travel to these towns from boats that are on the shore of the lake.
