A surprising place! Don't forget to go to the roof top You can use the ticket from the Frida Kahlo museum to enter this one for free (up to a year after your purchase)

This should be a stop on your next visit to CDMX. Find a bit of peace and quite smack dab in the middle of one of the world's largest metros. The building is amazing and built over lava flows with volcanic material. Diego's personal collection is on display for the public. The rooms are in a horseshoe configuration, so one can start either left or right. Take the stairs up as you encounter them. Eventually, you'll reach the terrace for lovely views. There are exhibitions by other artists often. Stay a while and visit the cafe and gift shop. Enjoy!

Well worth the trip to this museum. The architecture is breathtaking, built completely with volcanic rock. The Diego Rivera sketches are mesmerizing, and the museum staff is knowledgeable and explains every detail. Thanks to Melissa who explained the whole history behind one of the sketches!!!

Super intriguing setting and architecture, but an almost complete lack of information about the building and it’s contents. The collections are just random groupings of similar figurines that Diego Rivera liked aesthetically- with no information about provenance or history. There is a beautiful cluster of modern pavilions on the grounds with no apparent use (are they supposed to be galleries? Offices?). We opened the door of the gift shop to be screamed at by a member of staff inside that it was closed - it was like 1pm on a Thursday. They charge 30 pesos to take photos which is really weird. Overall - a strange place to visit but with definite visual interest. Just don’t think you will learn anything about the building , objects or Diego Rivera.

One of the most beautiful museums I’ve ever visited. What it lacks in detailed information on individual pieces it more than makes up for in aesthetically pleasing design. This was a wonderful way to view pre-Columbian art of Mexico.

The biggest surprise of my trip was the Anahuacalli Museum. It is a building designed for Diego Rivera's pre-Columbian art collection by Frank Lloyd Wright with directio of Rivera in the 1940's but not completed until 1964. The building is based on pyramids and built of local volcanic rock. The collection left me speechless. I thi k it was even better than the Museo Nacional de Antropología . I have to say if you are looking for pre-Columbian art or love architecture. You must come to this museum. I'm still in awe of it.

Entry is free with purchase of ticket for museo Frida Kahlo (la casa azul). The best part about this museum is the outdoor view from the top floor.

It was an awesome place to see, so many artifacts a wide collection, 5 stories. 4 inside and the last at the top outside with a beautiful view of the city and both volcanos. On the weekends they have tours to explain everything. They have several rooms to explore and see the collection. While there the place was also reserved in the evening for a wedding.

This was not my cup of tea... I enjoy art and sculptures, but I could have gone without coming here. Lots and LOTS of figurines, sculptures, pottery, archaeological artifacts. The mosaic ceilings were beautiful. What I enjoyed most was the architecture outside the museum, toward the back of the property. It was serene. We purchased tickets for the Frida Kahlo Museum and we had free entry here.

It is a very different and unique museum. Planned through the eyes of the artist Diego Rivera. All the pieces of art are from his personal collection or his own art. The gardens are beautiful. Some of the pieces are not original pieces but are exhibited as he acquired them because he liked them not because he thought of them as investment. His intention with the building of this museum was for people to go in and enjoy the art exhibited there through their own eyes and not as part of history.

My friend suggested we go to this museum, and I'm glad we did, even though it was a bit out of the city center. The architecture, made from black volcanic stone, creates an underworld vibe. Various artworks adorn the ceilings and there are tons of artifacts in every room. You can't miss the balcony view of the area. Also, you will have to pay extra (60 pesos) if you want to take photos inside. Definitely worth a trip!

January 2022 I’m impressed with this museum. So much to see and know about Diego Rivera. The building is strict on how people view each floors and rooms. Just an amazing wealth of artifacts collected in this one place. The museum is designed to capture the beauty of what is displayed. Definitely, travelers should include this in their itinerary........ Have a nice day.......

I was introduced to three (Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco) of my favorite artists at a limited time, México La Exposición Realizada at Città Metropolitana di Bologna, Italy on November 14, 2017. Now, nearly 5 years later, I've finally made it to Mexico to see Diego Rivera's Collection of ancient artifacts and some of his masterpieces at the famed Museo Anahuacalli. It was phenomenal! 🌎🇲🇽❤️😁🙏

The building is amazing! Such an atmosphere of darkness! The exhibition includes small Aztec sculptures and not paintings of Diego Rivera (as I was thinking), so it's important to know.

Two lovely friendly cats live on the site. The architecture is great. Tickets are free with the Frida Kahlo Museum. Collection feels more curated, if with less info, than, the anthropology museum. But seriously. This is a cool weird building. Be prepared to walk up lots and lots of stairs. I’m still reeling from all the clay statues. Not a fan of the permit to take photos. Great view from the roof. Highly suggest. Also great restaurants on the way back to the light rail.

In all transparency, I had thought I was going to see more of Diego Rivera's murals and while there are some, that's not what this place is about. What I imagine happened in the creation of this place is that Frida, like many wives, was like...you HAVE to find a place for all this stuff. And so, Diego constructed a home for his love of pre-Columbian artifacts. The architecture of the building is mesoAmerican in inspiration. Because it's built with volcanic stone, it feels like you're walking through a cave. Absolutely enjoyed the many artifacts through the entire building, the view on the roof, and exploring the cultural center, a short walk away filled with artisans, dancer, etc.

Diego Riveras museum, which he erected in honor of his ancestors, with a vast collection of mayan relics, and amazing mosaics along the ceilings made by Diego him self. If you haven't been there go. Heads up, if you visit fridah kahlo's museum you will receive a free voucher which gives you access to Diegos museum. Amazing deal right.

I just going to say "if you love Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic archaeology do yourself a favor and visit this museum". Mostly pieces from the extensive private collection of Diego Rivera and as a bonus some sketches of their famous murals.

  • 4/5 Sara K. 4 years ago on Google
This museum is built with volcanic rock. The mosaic murals on the ceiling add to the charm of this museum.

  • 5/5 Jose Carlos G. 4 years ago on Google
If possible I would add 10 stars review on this place. The building itself is a majestic and imposing work of art inspired by pre-Hispanic art, built with volcanic stone, mosaics on the high ceilings and a terrace that gives an incredible view of the surroundings. The total collection of original pre-Hispanic pieces that the world-famous painter Diego Rivera acquired during his lifetime is around 5,000, with 2,000 on display. It features also original art from Rivera's mural process in an illuminated gallery with large windows. The entrance is quite accessible, it has parking, bathrooms, cafeteria and souvenir shop. You can buy bus access and tickets to this museum and the Frida Kahlo Museum to visit the same day. An indispensable location if you visit Mexico City to have an approach to Mesoamerican cultures. It is in South of Mexico City, 20 minutes driving from Coyoacan main square

If you have to choose between Cass azul and this go to azul. This is far from everything but if you have time this is a wonderful museum to get a view of what caught Diego's eye and to see a part of the city in a more natural setting.

The building itself is a piece of art. It’s a must see in cdmx and Coyoacán. A wonderful collection of pottery and work from states all around Mexico - Diego Rivera assembled a wonderful collection that is a treasure. The architecture influenced by ancient temples of Mexico and contributed to by Frank Lloyd Wright is spectacular. Make sure to visit the terrace upstairs and outside amazing views. The stone is volcanic and created a sense of the ancient and modern.

In this enclosure, divided into levels, where you can find a fountain to make wishes at the bottom, while in the viewpoint, you can see the periphery. In this space, there is no space that does not move you nationalistic feelings if you are Mexican and reflective if you are a foreigner. Fascinating museum in Coyoacán, conceived by Diego Rivera and built after his death in 1964 by architect Juan O'Gorman (who also built the Kahlo/Rivera studios in nearby San Angel) to house Rivera's extensive pre-Hispanic collection of artifacts. It's a hulking structure made out of the local black volcanic stone and designed in the style of a pyramid with some Art Deco thrown in. Don't miss the roof terrace!

It's definitely out of the way. Wheelchair users will only be able to access the first floor, which was disappointing. The building is cool and the 1st floor artifacts were interesting, but until they make it possible to access the upper floor, wheelchair users would be better off going to other museums who have made themselves more accessible.

The building alone is something to admire. All the sculptures within have great historical value and artistic meaning. Multiple levels so lots of stuff to see. Even for the average not-so-art-inclined person like myself this is a great place! Will highly recommend. Prices are very decent and affordable.

The museum is truly amazing! The collection of artifacts is none like a have previously seen in other museums. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the gardens as there was a private event the next day and they were setting everything up. But I do want to return. The gist shop has quite a few great pieces at reasonable prices. We arrived at opening time and has the museum to ourselves.

Worth the 20 minute Uber to the museum from the city center. We did not have enough time to take public transit which can take an hour. The architecture of the museum transports you to another time. The collection is of beautiful pre-Hispanic artifacts. We went on the free tour of the ecological park surrounding the museum and enjoyed it but you have to know Spanish.

No AC but it stays pretty cool inside the actual museum and it's been a hot week here. I'm surprised how cool it stayed. But very beautiful not one empty spot inside. This beautiful stone museum houses Diego Rivera's extensive collection of Mesoamerican artifacts. My ticket was included when we purchased tickets to the Frida Kahlo Museum, but it turned out to be a much more interesting and larger museum in comparison. They charged an additional fee for photography. We found it amusing that a terracotta warrior (a Chinese artifact) was randomly incorporated into their collection without any additional explanation.

The art was displayed beautifully and works well with the small collection of contemporary art as well as some pieces by Diego Rivera. Definitely curated well and very different than your average museum.

I loved it! D.Rivera's personal collection of antiquities, combined with many of his paintings & installations. The building is fascinating, made of a local dark stone, with dimming lights, lots of atmosphere!!

Very nice and unique concept, museum is filled with history artefacts within this special building that is inspired with piramids. Very beautiful ofrenda was inside the building for the Dia de Muertos.
