Based on all the hype and recommendations, I was expecting superior flavors. Their dishes are ok. Nothing spectacular, but yet serviceable. With so may choices around the city, I would rather go elsewhere next time.

This is a place with tradition, the food is the highlight, really delicious, but the service, the atmosphere and decoration is just fair. If you know who Anthony Bourdain was, then, this is a must visit. Must ask: frijoles con huevo and café de olla. Must watch: the hours, the earlier the better. Having breakfast at 7:00 am, once in a while and in this place. If you arrive at 8 you'll have to wait at least 20 min. Around 10:30 almost all has been sold.

Expect lines to get in but the waiting time is pretty decent. There’s live music inside the venue. The tables are communal, usually seating around 12 people. Their menu is varied, they offer green chilaquiles, different types of eggs, and 5-6 meat or pork “guisados”. Not an option for vegans and limited for vegetarians. Loved their eggs with beans, they were super tasty. The salsa of the chilaquiles was very tasty too. They offer coffee (with sugar, so if you don’t like it order it without it in advance), fresh orange juice, and sodas. The venue is ok, kind of traditional and cozy. Service is fast, kind of friendly, but not the best. Really cheap prices.

This is the most traditional place you can get! Delicious chilaquiles with eggs. You must get the one with eggs and the fried beans with eggs. 🤯🤯🤯 you also get background music 🎶 awesome place!

Located in the middle of the Colonia del Valle, Fonda Margarita is an excellent place to try out the traditional Mexican cuisine. Even though it is easy on the wallet, the servings are more than fair sized and they take credit cards, even American Express! However, its popularity makes the service a bit slow and, unless you are a morning person, there will always be a waiting line. Also, keep in mind you'll likely need to share table, as the smallest tables available are for 6. Overall, if you are up for traditional and cheap Mexican cuisine, the wait is definitely worth your while!

We really enjoyed this place. We saw it on Somebody Feed Phill and so we had to come while in Mexico City on our vacation. The food was great. We got here about 730am so it wasn't too busy and we sat right away and ordered one pf each of the soups. I'm not sure the names. One was a spicy chorizo, pork Verde, and steak red sauce. The pork Verde was by far my favorite and had amazing flavor. All had really amazing depth of flavors. Worth the trip. Make sure to come by when here.

Super legit and authentic Mexican breakfast. We waited about 30 mins in line, brushed off our rusty high school level Spanish and ended up having one of the best meals of our trip. If you're up for an adventure, this place is absolutely worth it.

Best meal that I had in Mexico City by far! I recommend coming on weekdays at 8am or so before there’s a line. Order the most popular dishes (especially the black bean dish and the chilaquiles with eggs).

(Translated by Google) Very good taste and better to take away. The bad and lousy thing is the treatment with the waiters who are always in a bad way and get mad. Nobody ever told them to smile to be nice to customers because in the end they look for tips. (Original) Sabor muy bueno y para llevar mejor. Lo malo y pésimo es el trato con los meseros que siempre están de malas y se encamotan. Nadie les dijo nunca que sonrían que sean amables con los clientes pues al final se buscan las propinas.

Super great experience; low-key, fast service and delicious food. Waiter kinda messed up our order but I'm glad he forgot one of our dishes because it would have been way too much food 😂

I'll just have to pile on with the other superlative reviews of this terrific family restaurant that never lets fame get to its head. I doubt much has changed with this place since the 60's when they moved from a palm frond hut to this building. My family of 6 were greeted with smiles and recommendations for child favourites. We dined with delight on some of the most flavourful food I've had in Mexico. Do make the effort to get here and don't let the fact that it's been on TV put you off. It's the same as it ever was.

The famous egg with black beans lives up to its reputation! Almost everyone there orders one and it was extremely good! Cafe de olla is an acquired taste, I'm alright with it since I don't like sweet coffee, but my bf seems to love it! The coffee is a black coffee with a hint of sweet cinnamon taste.

Really, really cool environment. Food was OK. Beans were GREAT. OJ was very sus - like it wasn’t real OJ. Tl;dr great for a trip to check it out, but probably wouldn’t go back.

DON’T get the chilaquiles, you can get those anywhere. Get a traditional dish instead. Ask your waiter for a recommendation, specially if you’re sensitive to spicy food. Beans are a must and a perfect dish to share.

The food was hearty, delicious, and quick. The inside was so cozy and it felt like mostly locals eating there, so that’s always nice. Delicious eggs and chicaronnes with green Chile sauce

Ok, let's address the main issue here about the 2 and 3 star reviews. This place is a FONDA. If you're not familiar with the term, it refers to a 'popular' food establishment. Popular in this context is more 'for the populous' than the American meaning for popular. Having said that, the food is REALLY good, albeit very simple. Tables are long and you'll be sitting and eating next to strangers. Very homey. Overall I think it’s a great experience. If you’re uneasy in a setting like this or are expecting 5 star dinning, this is not the place. They open only for breakfast.

Most delicious and affordable Mexican meal! Get there early (before 8 am). Must order the frijoles con huevos. The pork in salsa verde was also delicious. Fresh squeezed OJ and cafe de olla. Tremendous!

So good - delicious breakfast. Shared tables, live music, place full of happy hungry people eating and talking and eating. Not for vegans, sorry.

  • 4/5 Anthony M. 5 months ago on Google
Really nice little breakfast place frequented by locals just outside of the tourist hot spots of the city. There's a three piece mariachi band playing whilst you eat which is nice and the food and service is good but not exceptional. Try the frijoles con huevos (refried beans with scrambled egg) and a meat dish of your choice or chilaquiles. Be prepared for very sweet black coffee in case you don't take sugar. Worth the Uber ride and a one off visit but get here early - ideally before 8am and fry to avoid weekends - if you don't want to wait in line, as it's not quite worth a wait.

An amazing traditional breakfast. Get there around 8 am to avoid the line. We sampled a bit of everything. The sugar cinnamon coffee is also good if you like sweetened coffee.

Best place to go after your 5am airport arrival in Mexico City. If you skip the beans you’re doing it wrong! Menu changes daily, I recommend the chilaquiles, Credo (pork) En Verde, Bistec (steak) en Pasilla. Earthy flavors you just don’t get very often in the US. This last visit I enjoyed the coffee as well but be warned it is sweetened, but excellent alongside a churro!

Not my first time visiting and maybe it’s covid that deeply impacted the experience but the place is not the same as one year ago. Food was cold and the taste was off. Would not recommend the visit during covid. Closed on Monday’s. Limited tables outside and the food arrives cold. No es la experiencia ni el sabor de comida de hace un año. No recomiendo la visita durante covid, el sabor y la comida fría afuera no se disfruta.
