Cool museum. One room with gold objects, two with artifacts and an upstairs that’s an expanded Wikipedia entry made into a walkable exhibition. Oh yeah, Bolivars body was there briefly.

Great collection with both Spanish and English descriptions. No admission fee. This is where Simon Bolivar died and one section if the second floor is dedicated to his life. These descriptions are only in Spanish.

Fairly good gold museum. No real tours in English. But there are plaques that have English for 3/4 of the exhibits. Has more indigenous information about the tribes in Magdalena province which is cool.

This is a must-do in Santa Marta. Very informative about the local indigenous, Simon Bolívar, and the current people of Santa Marta. There is alot to read, i took 2 hours but could've stayed longer. The shop at the end has very nice and knowledgeable staff. The security people were also lovely and helped me with directions.

The best place where you could get to know about inhabitants Tayronas, the ones who made the Lost City in Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta

I was surprised at how good this museum was. Don’t let the name fool you it has exhibits on the history of Santa Marta and good information on the local indigenous people too along with gold. Almost everything has good English translations also. As of December 2022 masks are required. If you don’t have one there’s a vendor outside who will you you one for 1000 cop.

Informative local museum with very helpful English translations for almost all of the displays. The site is also connected to the great liberator, Simon Bolivar. There is no admission fee, so missing this landmark in Santa Marta would be a mistake.

One of the better museums I have visited in Latin America. The English translations were complete, and with excellent grammar. The exhibits were well laid out, interesting, and professional. I especially enjoyed the indigenous carvings, along with the explanations of their significance. The bottom floor talks about the geological and biological history of the area, and contains the exhibits of indigenous artefacts. Continuing upstairs, you learn the specific history of Santa Marta as a city, as well as the history of the building that the museum is contained within, which was surprisingly interesting! Oh, and it's completely free.

I was not allowed inside....the guard directed me to scan a QR code which prompted me to book a ticket to visit ....but one day in advance....I looked inside and could not see anyone inside at all. I hovered around and did not see anyone try to enter or leave that museum. I gave it one star because it is free!!!

Fabulous and Free! This museum has excellent signage in English and Spanish. It’s got a diverse collection of pre-Colombian good goodies, indigenous information and sparse Simon Bolivar bits. Lovely shop attached if you’re looking for high end souvenirs and it’s housed in a magnificent space.

Very cool museum with great exhibits about the history of Santa Marta and the indigenous inhabitants and their way of life. The gold ornaments and jewelry are amazingly detailed and there are more everyday and funerary artifacts too. Great place to get out of the heat of the day and best of all, it's free to enter. Thank you Santa Marta.

It is a place full of history that is going to help you to understand how native people lived before the colonization and all kind of things that happened after that. Actually if the house could talks, she'll tell you many interesting stories where she was present through the time. It's Free.

I had a truly wonderful experience at this museum. The collection of historic artifacts, especially the section dedicated to indigenous history, left me in awe. What made it even more special was how accommodating they were to my family. We were traveling with an elderly family member, and the museum staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly when providing a wheelchair at the entrance. I can’t recommend this place enough – it’s a must-visit for anyone, and it’s great for families too.

If you want to know part of the history of Santa Marta, this is the right place, visit it on a Sunday and the stillness will make you enjoy all the magic and charm of the place.

Has English translations everywhere (besides one video which is an odd omission). We managed to get in just as a tour group finished so it was really quiet for us. Also a tip, if people are waiting outside just ignore them and walk in. It’s free and they don’t need any details from you.

Super interesting place, lot's of information about Colombia, Santa Martha and the region, very informative and above all- in good English! (Except one part about Simon Bolivar) All in all a good experience and very nice looking museum, I liked it a lot!

Can't fault this museum, entry was free, much of the information was in English as well as Spanish and many rooms were air conditioned. Obviously it was also full of great history, from Bolívar to Colombian tribes. Fascinating

For a free museum it's really good. Nice to have english texts everywhere too, to fully appreciate and understand it. There's way more than just hold, it includes a lot of history of the general area and peoples too. Nice way to spend an hourr or so!

For a free Museum it is pretty nice, learned a bit more about local history and Santa Marta as a city

I under estimated the museum having a little bit more than 1 hour to vidt. Its not only about a gold museum but it tell the story of Simón Bolívar, the whole Madalena province among other. Please have half if a day to be able to know Magdalena department throughout this museum.

Residing any historic district of Santa Marta, the gold museum shows the incredible craftsmanship of the indigenous peoples of Colombia prior to the arrival of the Hispanic peoples. Many of the techniques employed by the indigenous peoples have now been lost, and seeing this level of craftsmanship from a period dating over 1,000 years ago is breathtaking. Everything from necklaces to earrings, crowns and earns are represented there. The building itself also has historic significance, and the history of Colombia as well as the architecture is worth seeing. Entrance to the museum is free, and there is absolutely no excuse that you should not visit it when you are in the city. It also boasts a close companionship with Simon Bolivar and appropriately is next to the park named after this hero.

The museum is free to visit and not that large so it can get crowded really fast, the building is really well preserved but there aren't many gold pieces at display or guided tours so you are own watching mostly maps, photos and infographics telling the story of the town and Simón Bolivar.

Great place to know Tayrona and wayuu culture and history

Small museum free to enter and explore. Unfortunately some pieces don't have information about them displayed, which is a problem because different time periods were mixed.

  • 5/5 DS F. 7 years ago on Google
It's very informative and free of charge so if you don't get to read about everything in one visit you can always come back..pity they don't have a little cafeteria in the courtyard..:)
