My favorite part of this place was our "tour guide". The museum has senior year students doing community hours as tours and through their stories you go back in history to the time of Bolivar. This museum has a special magic, and it's covered by natured, 400 years old trees. The entrance for nonresidents it's like $12 but it's worth coming and visiting. Even for the 'gram is a good stop. There's the main "house" museum and a contemporary section built years after to showcase the work of emerging artists. Parking is free and there's a gift/coffee shop to get drinks, snacks and souvenirs.

Poor maintenance old and abandoned structures. Signs are broken and sometimes warned out. Its a shame that the country's most prized founder is neglected. Its a botanical garden of weeds and nothing more. Main structure was painted and it seemed they just threw the paint because its all over the floors. Outsiders pay more than locals so be aware. Its almost the country's founding aniversary and nothing done to look its best. Shame.

A historic place that includes a free guide with the ticket just make sure to tip them. A mix of a botanical garden, a bit of art and a tribute to the last days of the man Who was the liberator of America, Don Simon Bolívar. Make sure to wear light clothe since is Hot at least on January there is a café área where you can buy drinks and ice cream.

Not worthy. I was there 40 years ago, and the magic is gone. The area where the libertador passed, keeps the same care and respect by the administration. Gardens and the aviary and butterfly location are gone. The Botanical Garden .......

A must if you are in Santa Marta. The guides, while young, are knowledgeable. They will answer most questions you ask. The locations are nice and after the tour, you are allowed to check out the different locations at your own pace. The guides are not paid, but they make some well deserved money out of tips.

Must-do visit if you are in Santa Marta and would like to learn more about Colombian history. Here is where Simon Bolivar died. The landscape is sublime and beautifully maintained. The guided tour is friendly and perfect to get all the little details about what happened at this place back in the 1800’s. A lot of tourists from cruises come here so the place is full with dancers and activities to showcase the Caribbean culture. Great family trip!

It says botanic garden, but at the end nobody explain anything about the plants or the animals in the place. You can have a guide, they are students and you give them the tip you considered fair for their work. Thay talk about the history of the house, their owners and the last day of Simón Bolivar there. I think they could have more information but is it still a good information they give.

It’s a lovely historical place, good for a quick exploration but the museum was empty/closed for reasons unknown. The grounds were a bit untidy and they had no English speaking guides at all. I do acknowledge that we are in a Spanish speaking country BUT I feel like it’s good practice to have at least one English speaking guide at tourist/historical sites like these :)

Place to learn about history. Good initiative to have school students tour people around for tips. The place needs better maintenance. Somewhere disappointing.

There is no botanical garden here. It's used to be. Now it's closed. The area of the former botanical garden is absolutely overgrown and unattended. The location is a last house of Bolivar. There is a monument there. However, it doesn't qualify for the asked price.

Guides are very well educated and friendly. Maybe the non main buildings could get a little better care, but in general its a cool historical spot

Guided tour about Simon Bolivar with a lot of history. Its Spanish only. Takes about an hour to go through it. A lot of the historic rooms you can't go in, only look from the outside.

Tour felt a little rushed but to be fair, I arrived near closing time. The humidity was high and the speed walking made it feel more like a light exercise than a tour. I would recommend arriving several hours before closing time, wearing comfortable breathable fabrics, as well as comfortable shoes. The space that you cover isn't that big, so you can take in the entire experience in an hour.

Good preserved buildings and monuments about the death of Simon Bolivar, however the botanical garden is not taken care and therefore looks bad. A guided tour is available and also quite good, possible in Spanish and English.

Must see if you visit Santa Marta. Very historic place, regarding the last days of Simon Bolivar. You can be in and out in less than two hours. The entrance fee is reasonable. Guide is not included but available for tips. Go in the morning and then head for the fishing village/town name Taganga for a very nice fresh sea food lunch.

Well worth taking a guided tour. The walk from the bus stop close to the entrance to the ticketing office is ok. About 10min. Can be a little dangerous if you need to cross the road as there is a roundabout just outside.

Totally worth the little trip outside the city, and the free guide are really nice people and very knowledgeable. The place isn’t very well maintained for being such an important site for Colombia with the monumento a la patria. Everybody should come here!

  • 2/5 Zakk A. 6 months ago on Google
The five star reviews are baffling to me. Nobody is tending the grounds; everything is choking with weeds and overgrowth, and the botanical gardens are a mess. The fish and turtle pond does not appear to contain either fish nor turtles. 3 of the 5 exhibition rooms in the art museum were closed or empty. The house itself is run down and the exhibits inside are sparse and decaying. The place had a super depressing vibe. It wasn't like this on my last visit 10 years ago.

Be ready to sweat and be hot, other than that; beautiful place with a lot of history. You’ll be walking the same ground slaves walked hundreds of years ago, you can almost feel their pain. The same ground goes for the ground Simon Bolivar walked. What an experience. Easter egg: people from that time were very very short and big headed, you’ll see.

This last stay of Simon Bolivar is such a lovely place, well preserved over the time, the gardens are gorgeous, well located opposite to Buenavista Shopping Center, guide by history students, be aware the guide fees are not included in the entrance ticket.

Impressive area with lots to see. A single ticket of 23,000 COP gives you access to Bolivar’s shrine, a museum, contemporary art museum, and the hacienda of Bolivar. Coffee shop could be better.

Huge place with a lot of nature, birds, iguanas and obviously, historical places and elements from the time of Simon Bolivar "the liberator". The place is in good conditions, it has guides and also English signs in case you want to do your tour by yourself. Inside the Quinta, you will find a small souvenir store where you can also purchase some snacks. One of the main drawbacks I found from this place was that it felt like an abandoned place, in fact the day I had arrived, I was bitten by a dog that was the companion of the security guards just because the dog was not tied up 😞 it was not the dog's fault it was a human error that could be worst, fortunately, it was just an scratch.

The tour was very interesting and our guide gave it in both Spanish and English. Very nice modern art museum. Many lovely plants and iguanas.

It's particularly noteworthy because it's a place where Simon boulevard died. There is a tour which explains it All but it's in Spanish so you need to speak Spanish to understand what they are saying. But they're a beautiful gardens and it starts statues and it's definitely worth it because this man was a great man.

Very nice park with lots of history. Many of the buildings could use some TLC. There is a little store where you can get cold drinks, snacks, and souvenirs. There are tables and chairs adjacent. Sufficient clean bathroom space, but no a/c.

Excellent place to pay homage and respects to Simon Bolivar and see the Finca where he died. The grounds are immaculately kept and include a botanical garden, small lake and a large mural of Bolivar's life. Across the street is Buenavista Mall and a huge Exito supermarket if you need to buy some things before going back to your hotel.
