We managed to get a nice table before the rush without booking and and the food came out promptly (which we valued). Overall value for money was great (unbelievable if used to London pricing!), some new cuisines were fantastic to try and overall it was delicious and the service was excellent. The bathroom was quite cute too (bicycle sink). It’s not the best on the island, but deserves 5*. Only knock/downside was my girlfriend doesn’t like coriander and we told the staff and I think they forgot as some dishes still had small amounts of it that she finds overpowering (but it fully deserves 5* and a must book restaurant).

We found this spontaneous after a longer hiking tour by google. Great restaurant with very friendly staff and very delicious food ! But why we can give only four stars is the pricing .. the very tasty home made bread with butter and olives cost 5,90€ which on the upper end but ok .. but the muscles in curry sauce .. ( very tasty but quite small oration ) cost a bit more than 12€ .. and the main dishes where between 21,50€ to over 30€ for a let’s say not really bigger portion. Of course it is considered as a more hip and pricey restaurant.. but all prices around 10-15% less and it would have been perfect .. and a small beer for 4€ was definitely too much !.. but nevertheless, I would recommend it, if you not on budget !

Lovely spot hidden away from the main thoroughfare. Food exquisite and excellent service. Set menu for €80 covers two people. We booked for Sunday lunch and had a very leisurely lunch but definitely recommend booking as can get very busy.

A small gem in the city center. As a bread lover, I have to admit that their sourdough bread was a 10/10 👌🏻 Food was good and the wine it was not exactly what we asked for, but it was a good wine. Service is very friendly, which for me it’s already half of the experience. Book in advance though, as it is always well visited.

Absolutely amazing menu, tried most of the dishes over two evenings, that's how good it was, had to go back for a second time. Extremely tasty food, excellent service and inviting venue/atmosphere.The most amazing draw for the place is the (Head?) Chef Liliana.A talented perfectionist who creates a friendly and professional environment even at the busiest times and produces the most delicious meals. I'd highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be going back when I return to Madeira.

Absolutely fantastic food and ambience! Chef's table (the best I have sat at) is the place to be for added theatre and conversation with the chefs, who are so young and talented! The food is presented brilliantly and tasted excellent. We just ordered based on what we were watching the chefs prepare and as and when we wanted. The house wine is not bad either! Overall, I highly recommend and would love to return when we come back to Madiera.

We’ve been there for lunch, pre booked at the place. We sit behind the kitchen watching chef cook. It was perfect experience and the food was simple delicious and amazing. It is so far one of two best restaurant in Funchal together with Restaurant Informal. This one is bit more expensive but still the taste was unbelievable. This is what I expected from restaurant, to get me what I am no able to cook at home. If you love food and have big budget, it is totally worth it! The starters was also amazing, they have one starter shared for both people. Notice that they are opening at 12:30 and closing before 15:00 to prepare for evening.

An awesome service with super friendly and very professional staff. The dishes are truly delicious with authentic flavours and greatly presented. Small and warm place to have dinner. The perfect restaurant for our last diner in Funchal and definitely our favorite one. Thank you

Fantastic place to have a delicious dinner. We reserved two places on the bar, so we’re able to watch the process. The starters and main dishes were super delicious, the tastes are well combined. Creamy prawn with seafood rice and market fish fifth onion foam were above expectations. Chocolate cake and tangerine ice cream dessert was good as well. Despite a big crowd, you are served quickly (as for Portugal).

Final night dinner. Mixed reception on my end: love the sourdough bread but we didn’t like the seaweed powder on the butter and too little butter for the bread portion sizes. AMAZING cod tacos, full of flavour and juicy. My veggie main was alright: the tiny crusted lemon flakes were inventive and gave it much-needed flavour. My husband though loved his lamb meal and said it was the best food he had the whole trip. Service was terrible for the high price point.

Had huge expectations for this place, and I believe if I had booked a table outside, I would have given 5*. The room upstairs was very loud, with terrible acoustic and the decor was very poor. There were two loud groups, and for the price tag, I was expecting a relaxed dinner, but instead, I got a loud dinner with some disco music on top. I asked to change for a table outside, but I understand it was already reserved. The service was very good, the waiter was so welcoming and explained all the dishes and they welcomed my changes too which I really appreciated. We tried the tuna cones, sardines, and codfish tacos, and the highlight was the main - fish market with tomato migas. The desert was also very good, we had the chocolate mousse. My husband thought the basil was overpowering, but for me, it was just perfect. It was definitely the best meal we had in Madeira and I would go back but would book the table outside.

Amazing experience, we really enjoyed the visit. Everything was perfect. The place itself, great people, nice and kind service, athmosphere and the food. Each dish was really well composed and delicious. We tasted unusual combinations of flavours which worked really well together. Thank you for amazing birthday dinner.

We reas about this in the Monocle guidebook and the review was right on point. This place is an incredible find!! Absolutely delicious food, different approach to local fish and vegetables/ Asian influences subtly done raising Portuguese food to another level. The price is absolutely right.

An explosion of taste, tender meat with an interesting combination of sauces, a new for me reverence for the usual hunting barley with delicious sauce and amazing meat. Desserts made the brain go crazy with sweet, sour, salty and bitter chocolate. We took the recommended kampo wines, for vivino the average rating is above 4, which is high, and very tasty, strongly recommend to book and try food.

Every bite was delicious! The service was wonderful. If you are looking for a special diner, I highly recommend this restaurant. We (two persons) paid €110 in total for three starters + two oysters, the lobster and shrimp seafood rice (to share) and a dessert to share. We had a big bottle of water and both of us had a glass of wine. The portions are quite small, but we left the restaurant feeling full and very satisfied! Obrigada Akua :)

Located in the heart of Funchal, this restaurant offers an intimate and trendy dining experience. Known for its exceptional hospitality, it prides itself on serving a delectable array of fresh fish and other dishes. The culinary offerings are expertly cooked and artistically presented in the open plan kitchen, providing a visually captivating experience. With an emphasis on fine dining, this establishment offers a remarkable, gastronomic experience but without an extravagant price tag. Overall, it is a wonderful dining destination.

Delicious! We shared cod tacos and fish sausages for starters. For main, a seafood rice dish which had lobster tail, mussels and prawns. All of the fish was extremely fresh and full of flavor. The deserts were so well put together in relation to the combination of flavours. Expensive compared to other local restaurants, but that is relative to the quality of food received!

We came there by accident but it was the best food experience in Funchal! Amazing taste, surprising and exciting flavors, very pleasant look and feel of the place and great staff. This restaurant should be on the Michelin guide for sure. Personally I recommend the trout with pasta and chocolate mousse 🍨

Amazing food, everything was really good and tasty. Friendly Staff, they forgot we were celebrating a birthday so a bad thing as that would be great. They forgot even our dessert. We understand they were busy but I think excellence on these small details make the difference. I’d happy get back, please reserve a table as we saw lots of the people rejected as they didn’t have a booking. A bit overprice but ok

Absolute PERFECTION. Can’t say anymore - best meal in Madeira. Service was incredibly professional and they explain the details of the food very well. Try the classic menu with 4 appetisers, 1 main and 1 dessert. Every dish builds up in its flavour and they will blow your mind each time. You won’t regret it.

One of the best dining experiences in Madeira! The staff is absolutely lovely and helpful in explaining everything on the menu. The food is unbelievable! We went there for lunch and had Chef's recommendations, which were sublime. We also had all the deserts from the menu which were out of this world. The spices and flavours are used in a unique combination.

We had a great time at Ákua. It has been recommended to us by a local and it didn’t disappoint us. The food was very special and interesting, having a twist to the local cuisine, but still using the typical ingredients. Better make a reservation in advance, since it’s quite busy. The staff was also very thoughtful and solved any inconvenience we had 🤭 100% recommended!!

Best food we’ve had in Funchal so far. I had the market fish with seafood pasta and it was probably the best fish I have ever had in any restaurant, ever. The oysters are super fresh, the appetizers are so good and smartly presented so that you can share everything. Nice service, good wine. But they are usually fully booked for dinner, especially outside, so if you want to make sure you get in, stop by and make a reservation first.

Excellent dinner with great food and service. The carabinieri and seafood rice is HEAVENLY!!! The price is also reasonable. I recommend sitting at the bar table so you can enjoy watching how the chefs prepare the food. I am amazed by chef Rodolfo Silva for his attention to details and professionalism. He is also kind and caring to his customers. All Madeira travellers should try! Highly recommend!

Magnificent sea based dishes with a twist of influence from all over the world. I love every second of it. The set menu is so big that you barely eat more, but at the same time its delicious that you can't help it. Fully recommended!

Popped in when we couldn't get in at another restaurant during lunchtime. The had a space for two. The food was excellent, although on the pricey side for lunch. The food is mainly focused on fish, however I tried the ox cheeks and it was excellent. You have to scan the QR code to get the menu. When your done you scan the reverse side to see the bill. This didn't work for us, so they brought a printout to us. They accept cash or card.

We ordered three different things on the menu: bread, sardines and the vegetables. All of them were beautiful and scrumptious. The service was wonderful and we've learned you can come the day before to order a loaf of the homemade sourdough (naturally fermented - no yeast) which you can then pick up the next day. We returned today to pick up our loaf. YUM!

Fantastic experience as we sat at the kitchen bar. Fantastic food and service. The whole Akua team are very professional and welcoming. We had the seven course sharing menu, which was cooked and served right before our eyes. Brilliant concept. Highly recommend 👍🏻

On our last day we stopped at this Gem. Fresh, Tasty seafood cooked perfectly and presented with flare. Small establishment but excellent product. Even the sourdough bread is to die for. Wish we could stay on island another day.

Wonderful food, definitely a twist on the norm, extremely helpful and informative about their high quality food, they push your taste buds to the max. Quirky ordering using a Q code which once they have sorted it I am sure will be good. Perhaps more description on the app or added photos would help those none Portuguese to understand better what is available but overall a great restraunt and extremely friendly staff.

In very simple surroundings we enjoyed the most exquisitely presented and deliciously flavoured dishes. The waitress suggested ordering plates to share, which was an excellent way of sampling a wider selection. We were a party of 3. We chose a starter and a main each. Plenty.
