Great location, good service .. excellent breakfast .. but 'colonial' is used as a poor excuse for cheap repairs and low maintenance.

Hotel Dona Elvira was recommended to my family who planned an overnight trip to see the sights of Santo Domingo’s colonial zone. This hotel did not disappoint. Aesthetically, it’s gorgeously historic. Its common area is open-air, covered and cooled by a magnificent mango tree with a pool in the middle (I’m not sure if the pool is meant for swimming, though it is clean and clear). Our room was large, very clean, air-conditioned, and well stocked with toiletries, towels, etc. Great, filling breakfast options are included in the room rate with a supper menu offered as well (not included in the rate). I found the staff to be VERY friendly, helpful, and accommodated some small changes to one of our room reservations without hesitation. We had a light, casual conversation with the owner during which he touched on the hotel’s history. I really do wish I could have spent more time in S.D. and taken in more of this quaint little boutique gem of a hotel.

This is the worse hotel that I never had visit... let me start with this Our reservation on Expedia was one month ago we wanted support local business and we picked a room for 4 people 2 kids and 2 adults we arrived at night and when we get there our room was not available our reservation was not available the tell us that there was a mistake about the price of the room and was $60 more the price was wrong online but (we chose a day and pay off in advance), they wanted to give of the room the online cost $34 for $95 plus the manager was with friends at the lobby drinking alcohol room was not a/c and the manager was not helpful at all she said the they make mistake the that was not the price and we could live with out of refund that money the we already payed.... Expedia send confirmation plus confirmation from the hotel and they wait until we get there to tell us was not room and the different rates? Definitely pictures are amazing because that place is horrible dirty and smells really humid and unpleasant.. they definitely wait until you get there to increase room rates I don't know if the owner knows this but they did not respect there own rates online...it was a horrible experience with our 2 kids at 9 pm with not solutions she tell us there was not option even that we pay in advance with the rates they put online... I do not recommend this place at all the manager was with friends drinking alcohol... we where thinking to pay one night because we where there already but when we see this all scenario definitely was not a family place and if the manager was drinking with friends at the lobby I cant imagine... I COULDN'T FEEL SAFE FOR ME AND MY KIDS.. hope this message could help you in reconsidering changing hotels, this was the worst experience in this country

Don’t hold your events at this location, they broke the ornaments and equipments from a company that organized my cousin’s event without a reason. The manager is really rude and did not want to admit one of my friends because of his skin color as he didn’t look like a consumer (he was wearing LV shoes and a big chain)

Small, close to museums and nice places to visit within walking distance. Colorful and with a nice and helpful staff. If you are in need of an accessible hotel for people with disabilities you might rethink this one, or talk in advance with the hotel manager so you are given a room on the first floor. Breakfast was included, the coffee, the fruit, and the jam were always delicious.

Please do not waste your time booking this place. This people is extremely rude and it's a total scam. They have different airbnb accounts on airbnb to scam you and then when you book and arrive to the place they say that account is not them and you don't have anything booked even though you already paid. That's what happened to my husband and I today. Totally awful!

Let me start by saying the breakfast here is wonderful, fresh juice, toast eggs bacon or pancakes and very well done, but probably you should eat out at one for lunch and dinner. Irwin speaks excellent English and is a very nice member of the staff, the hotel owner is personable and talked to us at length on how we were enjoying our stay , his wife is the manager. The hotel is 500 years old and preserves well artifacts of its history such as the grate in room 6 showing the stonework for the original well. It is Spanish architecture with a 200 year old mango tree shading a large open courtyard and over top of the central in ground pool in the courtyard . Each room has air conditioning and has large opening windows into the courtyard. The rooms can be a bit musty but the windows allow good ventilation. It is my wife’s favorite hotel and for a woman who travels for a living that is a high bar.

Colonial style built to complement with the zone. Gives a glimpse of what to expect when tackling the colonial zone. Very confy rooms to relax, quite with a breeze of kind and smiles from the staff. The food is amazing if Estafiny is cooking, lovely woman. Very close to the attractions of the zone, close enough to start walking and sightings the old buildings of the zone. Great place to stay while visiting the colonial zone. The pool are gives a nice vibe to just stay there forever and relax.

The staff here are very friendly and helpful. Even the owner, Mark had a drink with my boyfriend and I for over 30 minutes. The area where it's located is tourist friendly as many people speak various languages and there's cops patrolling at all times. The free breakfast was amazing and filling which included fresh fruits, toast, eggs at your style, cheese, ham, coffee and freshly squeezed juice. Our room was charming, providing us with just the right amount of space. I would definitely stay here again!

I chose this hotel because of its historical significance, and in this way it was not a disappointment. However, my mother-in-law's room smelled like they cleaned it with gasoline to try covering up the smell of urine; which was faint but could still be smelled. Other than that I would agree with other reviews I've read, that if a little more money was put into fixing it up nicer it could be a great place to stay due to its proximity to the Colonial Zone.

Me and my family member enjoyed our stay . The employees were great, our room was comfortable for the money we paid. We had Air condition and fan. Breakfast was great . You can ask for what u want 24 hour before and u can have it. Is a very cute place around every activity u may want. Very safe, there is a pool but I didn’t have time to use it , very historical place. If u looking for a Hilton or holiday inn is not . is a family place small and personal. I would stay there again. Try to stay on the second level. To many flies on the first floor because of the pool.
