I recently stayed at this hotel, and the experience was quite disappointing. The ceiling had peeling white paint, which not only looked unattractive but also raised concerns about cleanliness and maintenance. The room layout was awkward with a small TV tucked away in a corner, making it uncomfortable to watch. The biggest issue, however, was the service. The servers were consistently rude and inattentive, which made for a frustrating dining experience. Additionally, they initially refused to include the advertised breakfast, and we had to argue with the front desk to have it included. Overall, my stay here left much to be desired. I hope the hotel management takes these issues seriously and works on improving their facilities and service quality.

Amazing!!! Great rooms, great property! There was construction going around outside the property, but nothing that would interfere with the ambiance of the hotel itself. Lots of history and things to explore right within the hotel! The food was amazing, every dish I ate was memorable! Great service and great prices! Would highly recommend!!!

This is beautiful hotel and restaurant just above the Santo Domingo colonial zone city-wall. I went for dinner and the food was of high quality and flavor and the wine selection and cocktails are on point. The most attractive part of the night was walking around the scene and through a very well preserved colonial environment. You can see some dungeons and wells from the time, and you get an amazing view of the port by the pool area. I recommended having dinner or maybe staying for a couple of days to fully enjoy the premises.

I have stayed in a lot of hotels in Santo Domingo and the Zona Colonial over the years and this is probably one of my least favorite. They rent the hotel space for weddings and tonight my room is vibrating from the loud disco music directly below, and the noise is inescapable. The hotel should not be taking reservations for anyone besides the wedding party. Moreover, there were other simple amenities that were not present- to charge your phone you have to unplug the light since there are no spare outlets, the pool wasn’t cleaned of debris, and towels were not available. Poor management! There are much more accommodating places to stay if you want to enjoy the Colonial Zone.

We really enjoyed this hotel. We are locals, but went as a small couples getaway and definitely enjoyed our stay. The hotel was clean and well attended. Food was good, service was also. Had cocktails at the pool which was great. Walking distance from all the main touristic attraction which is a plus. They have a garage to park securely your vehicle which is awesome. I would recommend this to anyone from couples wanting to relax for a weekend to friends that come from abroad wanting to go sight seeing in our wonderful Zona Colonial. Would go back, recommended.

The property is very nice. Staying at such an old building, yet with modern upgrades without compromising its history, is an unforgettable experience. Employees were very responsive, very well trained, perhaps a bit too formal, but I guess it has to do with the image that the hotel wants to portray. The room was neatly fixed, vey welcoming. Breakfast was excellent, many choices and very nice employees; a pleasant experience. There is plenty to do around the hotel, including many places to eat and many museums. We could not visit "The Alcazar de Colon" as it is being repaired. On our first morning and while still in bed, I could hear several members of the cleaning staff chatting outside the bedroom. I stood by the door and reminded them that there were people resting, and asked them to be a bit more considerate; they moved away right-away. Again, nothing major, kind of lack of common sense, but something that the hotel should address with the staff. Access to the hotel was very difficult as there is construction around it with the only inbound street closed, and no "detour signs". The alternate access is a one-way narrow street with cars parked on one side. Thus, it is almost impossible to access. This is not the hotel's fault, but something they might want to discuss with whoever is coordinating this project; perhaps request not to allow parking on the alternate access while the inbound street is closed? An overall positive experience, a great place to stay in Santo Domingo.

I have come here many times over the last couple of years. I've stayed in various rooms, had great meals, and enjoyed drinks at the bars. I took my fiance here on our first date and most recently we had some professional photos taken in various parts of the premises. The staff on all levels are very gracious and I cannot fault them on anything. They have earned and deserve 5 stars. Thank you Hodelpa. I look forward to coming here for years to come.

The hotel is located in the center of the Colonial Zone, in the middle of all the action! It is walking distance to numerous restaurants, markets, and other attractions. The rooms are clean, beautiful and match the preserved architectural style of the rest of the hotel. The staff were very kind, welcoming and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again in the future.

The staff is very nice, super helpful. The rooms are beautiful, clean, and comfortable, the location is awesome, the facilities are very cool too. The breakfast is delicious, full of options, and the restaurant at the hotel has a delicious menu. I will be back for sure.

It's a beautiful hotel in the colonial area.. however, tge bed was horrible. It was like sleeping on a tile floor and it dipped in the middle. Also the room had a smell. Like a mildew smell. 2 days later and 3 washes in the smell is still in my hair. I wouldn't stay here again.

Beautiful property, very well taken care of. Service overall is good but the restaurant waiters are slow. Food is good. I recommend this place if you wanna stay somewhere that is truly historic. It's truly like going back in time.

Rooms are spacious and elegant. Service was good but not great. Location is horrible for transportation but great for walking the colonial district. Restaurant quality is fair - our group went to the plaza area for better choices and service. Having staff ask for cash tips and complain that tips on room charges or credit cards don’t get paid to them for 3 months was annoying.

Located in a beautifully restored colonial and historical building, the hotel has the perfect location for exploring the zona colonial of Santo Domingo with walking distance to most spots and great restaurants. We enjoyed our stay very much, and the pool area and the patio as well, there's even a little oasis of various beautiful plants (with signs/descriptions) and palm trees in the patio that makes you feel like you're walking through a botanical garden. Thank you!

What a find! Most folks visit the DR for the tourist filled beaches. Why not also enjoy the history. This place is one of the first homes in the Americas and parts were built in the 1500's. The staff is almost without exception lovely and speaks Spanish and English. They will go out of their way to accomodate requests. We celebrated a friend's birthday here and the wait came out with a firework candle and song. They did the same for a couple we saw get engaged. The restuarant on site is good. The pool area is tranquil. The beds are a bit hard but nice. The place is packed with character. If you're coming through the DR, stop here and see the historic sites before heading to the beach.

During our stay, there was a wedding happening in the court yard from 3pm to 11pm. The music is extremely loud and even in the room with door closed, my phone app tells me its over 100 decibel (equivalent of "loud restaurant"). Could not rest at all. However the location is great; if you are there during the week (not weekend) I would recommend it.

The best thing about this hotel is the fact that it is set in a very old colonial space. The decor is very colonial. The club imperial was a nice touch. We were upgraded by Expedia and they put us in a better bigger room with two complementary drinks at the bar and access to the club imperial and a 10 minute sample massage. The gym is open 24 hours the pool closes at 8 PM. The only drawback was the lack of available electrical outlets to plug your electronics. Most of them were already occupied by lamps and other devices.

Beautiful hotel. We stayed for ten nights in a junior suite - on days the hotel was less busy we received excellent services, but on days the hotel was busy, the staff was unorganized and lacked proper management to work effectively. For example at breakfast, we requested tea and coffee and the server then went to clean a table that no one was waiting for, then went and chatted with another table, then did a few other tasks and apparently eventually forgot. When someone else came to check on us we requested tea and coffee again and it was a similar routine. My only other complaints are that there is nowhere to put your clothes away if you're staying for several nights. There's a closet with a few shelves but nowhere to keep things like underwear or pajamas. The bed frame was wobbly and shook anytime we turned in bed. There are no outlets to charge phones, you have to unplug lamps in order to use the outlets. The pool also had a lot of debris that appeared to be the same every day as if no one was cleaning it. And the wifi is useless.

Daiaw Martinez at the pool bar makes delightful cafe con leche — get 3. Hotel is beautiful, and has lots of comfortable spaces for relaxing. The restaurants are delicious, staff is attentive, and the location is ideal. We had a great time!

I had booked to stay for 4 night (860 dollars) at Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando. This was late November, early December. I had spent 1 night there and had to leave promptly. The staff assured me that I will get a full refund for 3 nights but gave a 1 night refund and refuse to answer my messages. Awful service! AVOID at all costs. I asked to speak to the management who refuse to give me the refund but their colleges do not wish to speak to me. It has been well over 4 months.

It's thr most beautiful hotel in the Colonial Zone. It has a great view to the river, the staff is very nice, the food is decent, and the location is perfect. A great place to scape in Santo Domingo .

This hotel is currently located exactly in the Colonial Zone and has a great view to the ocean. The welcoming is absolutely fabulous. The front desk amazed me and the check in was quick and easy. The bar is accessible to even guess and outsider. Good food and great drinks. You have access directly to the national park which show and explain the Dominican History. I’m excited to get back.

Probably one of the best hotels I’ve ever been to. Waking distance to all the sites in the colonial zone. The breakfast was fantastic, and definitely try the mojitos at the bar. You can order drinks and have them delivered to the pool. The front desk got us a taxi to take us to the airport when we were leaving.

  • 3/5 Robert M. 11 months ago on Google
Great location and decent rooms. Staff are not very attentive and service was painfully slow for even very simple requests - waiting 30 minutes for a drink was a daily occurrence at the pool. A note about the location - it's very handy to great restaurants and shops, but the ambiance is lacking. The pool is basically next to a freeway overlooking a grain silo. Very loud and not a relaxing poolside experience, especially with apathetic service. Strong mold/mildew smell in many parts of the hotel but not in our room. Power went out multiple times and a generator was used to get it back....but it sits on the roof with a deafening noise spewing diesel smoke. Food was decent but nothing special, and very expensive for very little. Again a long wait for basic things like a coffee refill - we gave up and started having breakfast elsewhere because the service was so slow. Concierge was similarly unhelpful with basic requests, no maps or directions were furnished, no one ever offered to make a booking or find a taxi....just a feeling of apathy and "the boss is away so do the bare minimum" pervades. The location is it's only real strength, but that said, you won't get better access to the zona colonial. Would not stay again without some large changes or a refund for part of our visit - not at the level of a true vacation hotel experience if that's what you are after - I've stayed in roadside holiday inns with more ambiance and warmth.

Beautiful place in the colonial city of Santo Domingo, the first city of the new world in America. This Hotel has an amazing view of the river and port of Santo Domingo, its pool area looks really nice and the bar area is amazing too. In the front is Damas Street which is the first street in the new world and in that street and around you can find museums, restaurants, bars and a lot of great places to visit like Plaza Spain, just about 3 minutes of walking distance. You can come here just for the bar or restaurant and look at the amazing views that this place has to offer inside and outside.

Great experience but ended in an ugly way. The location is wonderful and the staff is excellent. The room was a bit care worn but being in a 16th century building with open courtyards was charming. The end soured the experience though. When making the reservation on their website, I took care to pick the rate that included breakfast. Strangely, I didn’t receive a confirmation email and had to message them to ensure the reservation was made. When I arrived, I ask and was reassured that breakfast was included. It would have been a good deal since the buffet was extensive and nicely prepared. However, I was charged extra for it, making the stay much costlier than anticipated.

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Hotel Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando in Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo. The historic buildings right in the heart of the colonial zone created a mesmerizing ambiance, transporting me to colonial times the moment I stepped in. The location was ideal, as it allowed easy access to other historical buildings, museums, tours, and the best nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. As a history buff, this place was a dream come true. The stunning pool with its scenic views and the beautiful architecture added to the charm of the hotel. The service was impeccable, and the on-site restaurants and bars provided a delightful culinary experience. The only slight drawback was the firmness of the mattress, which didn't quite meet my personal preference. Despite this, I couldn't help but adore the place, and I hope they consider upgrading the mattresses in the future. Despite this minor concern, I genuinely love this hotel and would gladly return every year when I visit Santo Domingo!

NICOLAS DE OVANDO. This Hotel should be one of the best available. Do to its historic values and recognition. But the lack of interest on keeping it in good condition and the lack of maintenance it shouldn't be anyone's first, second or third choice. The place smells like a funeral home. The rooms where dirty. And the front desk service was horrible. There where better choices by the malecon. Just a few minutes from zona I Historica. Just not worth the over $600. For 2 nights. When ever visiting this places check airbnb for full apartment in the area. I was able to find an apartment for $280 in a brand new building with guard. New clean and great host.

We flew into Santo Domingo and stayed here before going to Punta Cana, My wife booked it so I had no preconceived notions of what to expect, I gotta say she nailed this one, just the history of the hotel alone was enough for a nerd like me not to mention the surrounding area, you can just take in the vibrant sights and people. I f you're the type who doesn't do well in an open market environment then the streets might not be for you, but if you're into the people of the places you visit, I highly recommend just strolling from one historic square to another and soaking it all in.

The check in was terrible. Front desk on 16th of September at 7:30 pm LM made me feel like I was a second rate guest. Didn’t get to have dinner until 9:30 after waiting in the lobby for hours. Requested to pay for a suite and he said it was too expensive lol. Rooms aren’t worth the stars. But the view is nice. Replace the front desk guy and the hotel should be fine. Guess his job is to turn away dollars.

Its like traveling back in time of Zorro, sword fights in the court yard or party dances with Catherine Zeta with Antonio Banderas. The time of the old Spanish colonies with those fortresses, canons on the battlements. Imagine going to church or the plaza riding a horse and/or carriage. It's mystical, it's adventurous, it's amazing here.

Very nice hotel. Good service. All personal very friendly. Reception always available and ready to help. Room was good enough. Inside the hotel there is a swimming pool. On the weekends they make wedding ceremonies. Room service every day. Even if you didn’t leave the tips cleaning is ok. Location also nice. Everything is nearby. The food is also more or less ok. Thanks for the hospitality.

It's a beautiful and comfortable hotel. But we made a few bad experiences during our stay: 1. Checkin is possible from 3 pm on. We arrived at 5 pm and haven't been able to checkin as our room wasn't available. After more than 30 minutes of waiting we got a room with just one bed instead of a twin room. 2. There is a large inner courtyard which seems to be a good place to relax. Unfortunately, there was a wedding no one told us before, a band and speakers included. Couldn't speak to my brother in our own room so I decided to complain on our second day. After some discussions we got a new room - but again with just one bed. They said there will be a twin room available tomorrow. But who wants to move the room every day? 3. Loads of power breakdowns all the time. 4. After all of the inconvenience I ask for a free drink at the bar as an apology, but they just said that's not possible, maybe a light beer ... All in all, the receptionists tried to do their best but I wouldn't choose this hotel a second time.

Horrible experience. It started by not having my booking. 1 hour at the front desk, once resolved, the room wasn't the one booked. I had to leave the hotel. You expect a certain service and a minimum of respect. I'm really disappointed. Please put your money somewhere else.

This is a beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. But even more importantly, the customer service was top notch. Breakfast buffet options were okay, although it's a bit expensive for what is available. Carolina in the restaurant during breakfast service was fantastic...she went out of her way to create an elevated seat for my toddler so she could reach her breakfast better. Overall, I would definitely recommend this beautiful property.

I will start this review saying that this is my favorite hotel , first time I stayed was in 2004 when it was still owned by Sofitel French chain. Then I couldn’t stop coming back. The rooms are so beautifully decorated and they’re very spacious, the pool is very nice and the rest of the hotel is just amazing. I love that colonial style that defines it and gives it a refined touch of magic. I came back after it was purchased by Hodelpa and I was to confirm that the quality, the service of the personnel and what makes this hotel so unique still remains as good as always. I’m looking forward to coming back again soon 😍

I use a Daypass so I can only rate the outdoor common areas and bar. I was treated like a queen with tasty food and drinks by the pool with friendly waiters. They have a good selection of tropical drinks even for those who don't drink alcohol. They have a relaxing garden with ornamental and edible plants where I took many selfies. Overall a very beautiful place that is well kept. Even the outdoor restroom was spotless and smelled good. Im definetly looking forward to book a room there next time im Santo domingo

One of the best hotels I have stayed in the world. The room was amazing. Bed and pillows super comfortable, clean and with incredible clean and fresh smell. My husband and I loved so much that during our month vacation we stayed twice at this hotel. First with my parents and kuds and they loved it and second time only the two of us. The hotel location is in the heart of zonal colonial.. Great food, parks and entertainment within walking distance. And last, but not least the staff is dedicated to make you feel comfortable and worked really hard to make sure you enjoyed your stay.

Breakfast could also be improved, as can the wifi which is close to useless given its speed. Staff is generally nice and courteous. The restaurant serves good dishes in the evening.
