Among many "first things" in SD this one counts in the more interesting ones. The convent of Dominican friars dates back to 16 c and was the prime breakthrough of Catholicism in the Americas. The friars established the first convent here, which later became the first University. Most interesting to me was the Homeless Jesus statue - Jesus sleeping covered on a bench, recognizable only by his feet cross wound, very intriguing.

The church and convent of Order of Preachers was founded in Santo Domingo in1510. In the past time, the convent housed the first university in Latin America. Due to numerous armed conflicts, earthquakes, hurricanes, fate did not treat this beautiful building with tenderness. However, the church structure remains in proper condition. The Church houses wonderful Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of the Order of Preachers. I visited in December 2014.

The convent is now part of Universidad Santo Tomas de Aquino, which opened in 1538 and offered the first science degree in the western hemisphere. The building houses Centro de TeologĂa Santo Domingo de Guzman Dominicos [Dominican Center of Theology].

This convent of the Dominican friars from early 16th century has been recently cleaned and plaster that had covered some unusual images, exposed. On what was the baptistry and mixed with the traditional images of the 4 evangelists, the 12 signs of the zodiac appear, revesling an affinity between the Catholic artists of the time and astronomy.

Very beautiful place, but the audio system is not in good working shape for the musicians that will play there. (If you will play music, bring your own devices preferably)
