I strongly recommend paying the 70 pesos for entry and audio guides... Purchase tickets in the office across from the shelter with the audio guides..... Women wearing shorts are required to cover up with a small blanket n that is provided. Men remove hats.

Die Kathedrale von Santo Domingo sollte man bei einem Besuch auf jedenfall besuchen. Sehr schön restauriert und es gibt auch einen Audioguide welcher einem sehr gute Informationen bereitstellt.

Beautiful church without a doubt a must see! However: When buying tickets if you do so with dollars be very careful with the change as they will give the worst value for your dollars, it is to my surprise that the practices at this church related to money are as such, in no other place in Dominican Republic I felt that people were trying to take advantage of tourists, it is a shame on the workers or management of this place to steal money from tourist.

Well worth the entrance fee to both see and support this historic gothic church; the first one in the Americas. Built in 1529. Audio tours are available for rent. No videos allowed, only photographs. Also, out of respect for the culture, as this is a Catholic church, we were kindly allowed to borrow a clean cloth to cover our bare shoulders and legs.

What a beautiful place — had the pleasure of attending a wedding here. Having seen many European cathedrals — have to say, this one’s unique and has the Americas’ spice to the European flavour

Great space, beautiful and well preserved historic building. Free entry for locals or 50 bolivars to foreigners. Do remember it is still a working church. During my visit, a wedding was taking place, that added a special touch. Remember to walk outside at the back of the Cathedral as the building itself is amazing.

Can I give NO Stars.....??, you have to PAY to get in.....???!!!!, this is a CHURCH......since when you have to pay to "visit the Lord's house"???? I can't say how it looks in the inside because me and the other 6 people in our group refused to pay...., if we wanted to offer a gift while inside (we were wanting to do so), that's on us, but a fee to go inside..... Nope! Awful experience Dominican Republic.... take advantage of your beautiful nature and beaches but NOT your churches, that's plain WRONG!!!!

Very cheap entry, around 2$ incl audio guide. Nice building but not as impressive as other old cathedrals. But in my eyes a must visit in Santo Domingo, since it is the oldest cathedral of Continents of Amerika.

Santo Domingo Cathedral, better known as Catedral Primada de América (America's Prize-winning Cathedral), was declared the first cathedral in the New World in 1546. This splendid minor basilica is dedicated to Santa María de la Encarnación. If you have your legs uncovered, they will lend you a loincloth at the entrance to hide your knees. Gentlemen, don't forget to uncover your heads when you enter the cathedral. Enjoy the visit!

Beautiful church, but I found it offensive that they forced me to wrap a blanket around my waist AND over my shoulders because I was wearing shorts and a tank top. They were very rough about it, literally touching my body to forcibly put the blankets on me themselves (I think because we didn't speak the same language so they couldn't communicate with words what they wanted me to do). I felt very violated by the manhandling for one thing, and by the inference that somehow my bare legs and arms were offensive to God.

The cathedral of Santo Domingo is the oldest in America built in 1504. The architecture of the building of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo is characterized by Gothic style with ribbed vaults, solid walls and three doors, two of them gothic in contrast to the third and main Plateresque Gothic style. It is located between the streets Archbishop Meriño and Isabela La Católica, next to the Colón Park; leaving its main door to the west, facing the Archbishop Meriño street, almost corner Archbishop Nouel. If you visit the city for the first time or if you live there, it is an essential stop.
