Great customer service. Very friendly. They do not try to push into buying. Look for merchandise we want with other sellers. Gave us free samples.

Not a safe place for tourists. We got a taxi here and walked around the market. The vendors are extremely pushy, more so than anywhere else in the D.R. One of the vendors were very nice but still followed us around. Once you leave the market, you’re thrown into a very rough area, which gets worse as you walk through. People become much less friendly, stare a lot and it’s a lot more intimidating. We had someone try to suggest we put our phones away, then tried to suggest we should give him money. He then followed us around everywhere we went, trying to make us give him money. Then, it rained and a local person let us in their shop for shelter, but she told us to be careful round there as people have bad intentions in this area. The guy trying to get money from us was a thief. It’s a real shame about this area, as the locals would thrive if it was a tourist hot spot. But sadly, it’s a forgotten area with a really unfriendly vibe. And very difficult to get out of once you’re in. If you’re a tourist, take my word for it… I’d avoid this one.

Mercado Modelo has been around since "the beginning of times." At this market, you can find any and everything you can imagine, whatever your heart desires, whatever you didn't know you wanted, and everything in between. It's filled with a gazillion number of stalls selling the same items. Whatever you mention and they don't have, they run to another stall and get it for you. It's every stall for itself, but they also work together for the sale. Sellers are friendly, full of anecdotes, and knowledgeable about items being sold. As another reviewer mentioned, be aware of your surroundings and your valuables.

Went into the first store on the right. The ladies were extremely helpful and attentive. Gave us very reasonable prices for everything. I didn't have to go anywhere else, they had everything I needed.

All the tourist trinkets you would want. It was so uninspired i found nothing to take a picture of. A shame there wasn't any quality products here. I was hoping for inexpensive larmiar here but same over priced goods as throughout the colonial zone. I can literally get cheaper larimar online in america. When I expressed any interest in a good, ie stopped and looked at something, the price quickly dropped down. Don't pay more than half the listed price.

The touristic experience that you must try in Santo Domingo. This is as much traditional as you can get. Ok nothing like air conditioning shop but hundred of small shops. Be ready to negotiate the price and have fun.

Soy Dominicana, this place brings back so many childhood memories!! If you ever visit Dominican Republic and wish to you bring your loved ones a gift, this is the BEST spot! Anything you can think of… they have it. From sweet treats, jewelry and handmade bags. My favorites will always be the beautiful paintings capturing our cultura! 🇩🇴🌴❤️

A good place where you can spend the last hours in Santo domingo before your departure to buy some souvenirs, but don’t get scammed , always bargain cause prices vary a lot from store to another , you should always take a tour ask about the prices then decide where you gonna buy , it’s a nice place when prices vary from 100$ to 1$ !!!!

Very nice place to experience the local culture and get some gifts :) Most sellers are very aggressive in trying to sopping you which is annoying but overall great experience. Don’t forget to negotiate prices :)

Looking for Tourist souvenirs? This is the place, too many shops all selling the same thing

  • 2/5 José V. 1 year ago on Google
Is not what it used to be at all. Many of the shops are now closed, probably due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Still a good place if all you want is some local art and gifts mostly made by Dominican artisans.

Over price would not recommend .....but woukd recommend the big national stores like Jumbo and Sirena they also carry arts and crafts and things to buy and take back home

  • 2/5 Johanna L. 1 year ago on Google
Lots of variety. You can find basically anything there. Very overpriced. Haggling is a MUST! Half price is the minimum. They wanted 4.600$dop for a larimar bracelet. We paid 2.000$ Before you pay horrendous prices, walk! They most likley lower the price then to make the sale.

I loved it so much. I was well greeted by the merchants. It gave me a feeling of being in the Haitian Iron Market. I made many friends. The Dominicans i used to know, are there and it was a wonderful experience!

I love this mercado... A whole bunch of local "artesanías" with their own business inside one place. One can buy all kinds of souveniers here, from tee shirts to towels, key chains, mugs, tamboras and awesome cigars!! The people are exceptionally friendly and warm. Everyone is willing to help.

Fun place to shop ! First store in the right is the best deals

  • 2/5 Marco A. 2 years ago on Google
Just souvenirs, not an actual market. Sellers are beyond annoying. Took me longer to get there than the actual stay, it was unbearable to have all these sellers behind you not even letting you see what they have.

You can find nice dominican souvenirs, fruits and other markets. The place is a little crowded and you might be subjected to pickpockets.

This is a wild experience if you’ve never been in a local area of a latin american country - the neighborhood has A LOT going on! Be prepared. Inside, the vendors have more or less exactly the same products and they’ll try to engage you to come into their store for the sale - which is one of the only ways to differentiate their offerings. Some shops will have some hidden gems that don’t seem to be mass produced - though there’s almost no way to really tell. We tried to find some more authentic artesian goods in the city but they don’t seem to produce much or make them widely available, as the demand looks like it’s for the cheesy kitchsy items.

Great placeto find a little bit of everything specially if you are looking for souvenirs from the dominican Republic. Jewelry in Larimar and ambar are also sold here.

  • 4/5 Dejan B. 2 years ago on Google
Mercado Modelo is a classic Latin American marketplace with many stalls selling everything - clothes, fake brands, fake cigars, souvenirs, paintings,...you name it, it's there. Sellers are not that pushy, but rather mostly friendly, ready to chat and joke. Haggling is a must.

Good place to buy souvenirs many item to buy and shop to choose from . Remember to bargain with the shop staff for a better deal . Item they sell mark up a lot and I feel they also expect buyer to negotiate on the price . Overall a good experience

  • 4/5 Carrlos B. 1 year ago on Google
Lots of great deals with prices that can be negotiated. Any souvenir you can imagine can be purchased here. I only took off one star because the location can be sketchy. Be careful with phones, purses, and wallets outside the market and make sure you’re fine by 5pm.

  • 5/5 Derison P. 1 year ago on Google
This is a good place to buy souvenirs. My only tip is to negotiate the prices. Because some spots would try to charge you extra. And also be careful. It didn’t seem like the safest place to be shopping at

  • 5/5 Georgios S. 1 year ago on Google
Yeap a market with locals and so traditional touristic things to buy. You have to go only if you like old ,tiny, not well organized shops. I loved this place :)

  • 3/5 Josie L. 1 year ago on Google
Plenty of stalls to buy souvenirs from, however please be mindful of the hassle you might receive from the stall owners. I understand they are trying to earn a living but if you were looking for a peaceful, leisurely shop, I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
