The Church of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes is a colonial Gothic church located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Colonial City of Santo Domingo". The construction of this religious building began in the year 1549, and was completed in 1616, built by Rodrigo de Liendo. It was an ancient seminary, later a monastery. This building was seriously damaged during the invasion of the English corsair Sir Francis Drake in 1586. The Church of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes has a wide vaulted nave with side chapels located between its buttresses. It has a high choir, an octagonal apse and a high altar in the Baroque style. It is notable for its wooden pulpit which is supported by a support in the form of a serpent demon.

According to official signage on the side of the building, stone mason Rodrigo de Liendo constructed Iglesia Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, a convent church, between 1527 and 1555. In 1653, Pedro Portillo added the first addition, while Pedro de la Rosa added a second addition in 1917. After the Trujillo Era, from 1968 to 1972, the government funded the latest restoration of the building. The sign also claims that the church has the only gothic style arcade on buildings in the Americas.

(Translated by Google) One of the most important churches in Santo Domingo is located on Calle Las Mercedes, built by the Spanish to establish Catholicism in the New World. The building has retained its original design, including the side chapels marked with Gothic vaults and altars with Baroque pieces. It was baptized with the name of the patron saint of the country, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes.

A.D 1555. The belfry was added in 1635. It is one of the oldest churches built by Spanish in Santo Domingo. XVI century and next XVII century C.E were not an easy period on Haiti Island. There were numerous armed conflicts, earthquakes, hurricanes and pirate raids. Due to a range of circumstances, construction took almost 30 years! However, for a few hundred years, the church structure is still in proper condition. Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is the patron saint of Haiti Island. I admired church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in December 2014.
