Beautiful place representing the end of the dictatorship the country endured when Trujillo was president. The obelisk has painted the Dominican Flag and is located in the MalecĂłn de Santo Domingo. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and always has the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Sundays many families bring their children to ride bikes, to walk around or to enjoy the park located across the street. I recommend this place.

This unusual obelisk stands at George Washington Av on SD Malecon. Not knowing the history behind it, one could conclude it's a street art - mural obelisk. However, it was erected by dictator Trujillo as a remembrance for renaming SD with his name. At the end of 20c, the obelisk was painted with peace motives in honor of 3 sisters who were one of many repression victims of his regime.

The Santo Domingo Obelisk is a 131-foot high monument erected in 1937 to celebrate the name change of the city of Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo, under the orders of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. It’s located at Avenida George Washington, Malecón, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. It was designed in 1936. The male obelisk was designed to be seen from anywhere on the famous Malecón Avenue. In 1996, renown Dominican artists started to exhibit their colorful paintings on the white monument. It’s a historical landmark for many structures built during the Trujillo dictatorship have been torn down.

Cool place, really nice wind, and many attractions and places to eat. Could use some improvements in security.

One of the most emblematic monuments of Santo Domingo is a 40 meters high structure that was officially inaugurated on January 11, 1937 to commemorate the name change of the country's capital from Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo. After the death of the tyrant, the Obelisk became an artistic monument that pays tribute to the Dominican Resistance against Trujillo and those people who suffered under his brutal rule.

Never saw this obelisk as an art work. Park around it was recently renovated but lack of maintenance and pride in their park makes it not worse.

Also called “obelisco macho” [male oblisk], Obelisco de Santo Domingo is arguably the partner of nearby Monumento a la Independencia Financiera. This 40 meter (131 foot) sculpture was built in 1937, several years earlier than its counterpart, as part of a celebration changing the name of Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo. Since 1996, local artists take turns decorating the originally all-white monument. The current artwork by Dustin Muñoz features the three Mirabal sisters, also known as “Las Mariposas” [the butterflies]. In 1960, supporters of the dictator assassinated the women for their political activism. Future artwork on the obelisk will continue to uplift Dominican heroes, especially those repressed during the Trujillo era.

The obelisk light beautifully at night. It is located in the Malecon area of Santo Domingo. Close to an amusement park and restaurant in the area. Great place for a photo op, worth the de tour.
