Fray Antonio de Montesinos monument is a museum located at Calle Arzobispo Portes No. 120, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was inaugurated in 1983 after having been donated by Mexico a year before. This representative monument is one of the key points of the George Washington Avenue. He was a Spanish Dominican friar who preached against the enslavement and poor treatment of the Dominican Republic's indigenous peoples.

The place is well organized and clean. The fee for adult is 100 Dominican pesos. It doesn't matter your nationality. You can watch a documentary well explained by renowned historians how the Tainos were treated at the time the Spanish colonized the island. I suggest to visit if you want to learn about Dominican history.

This towering statue on top of a building depicts Fray Antonio de Montesino, a Spanish Dominican friar from the early 16th century, giving a passionate sermon about the mistreatment of the Taíno by the Spanish. Montesino supported the abolition of slavery and did not allow slaveowners to give confession, which angered colonial governor Diego Colón. The government forced Montesino and the other Dominican friars to return to Spain. Montesino worked with Bartolomé de las Casas to convince Fernando II to pass a law protecting indiginous people in the Carribean. The modern statue stands about 18 meters (26 feet) high and is located within Consejo Judicial Centroamericano y del Caribe [Central American and Caribbean Judicial Council].

(Translated by Google) After the Remodeling carried out by the Mayor's Office of the city, the inhabitants of the Dominican capital and visitors can enjoy this place that has been transformed into a museum for the dissemination of human rights. It was opened in 1983 and renovated in 2019. The Spanish friar is represented standing on the day of the advent of 1511 when he made his first speech in defense of the dignity of the natives and against the situation of slavery to which they were subjected. If you go up to the top viewpoint of the monument you can contemplate a beautiful panoramic view of the city, the port of Santo Domingo and the Caribbean Sea. To access you have to pay an entrance fee. It is a three-story building and at the top stands the statue of Fran Antón de Montesinos that welcomes those who enter the port of Santo Domingo.

(Translated by Google) Visiting this monument, touring its facilities is necessary and refreshing because you can go down to the beach and watch the sunset, crush almonds (remember my childhood), then go enjoy a salmon with sautéed vegetables in D'Luis is an unforgettable experience ! (Translated by Google) The monument and its area for visits are in good condition, it is kept clean and orderly. However, there is nothing else to do there ... just see the monument. The one who remodeled and did everything to look pretty, must have thought at least a little bit about the purpose of a monument. This site does not have a single plaque or bulletin that describes who Montesino was and other information about him and his time.
