Probably the best site I saw in Portugal!! Totally and recommended must see place!! Tickets are quite cheap and there is also discount for students. Really impressive and suggestive. It's also on the UNESCO list. You can park the car in the city center and walk around 15 minutes to reach the hill. 100% to visit. Not very crowded.

This is the must see site in Tomar. It seems like only the chapel is left from the knights Templar period. The Order of Christ buildings are very nice. Be sure to give yourself a couple hours to see everything. Then relax in the shade of the gardens and imagine yourself in the same spot 500 years ago.

An enigmatic place with almost nine centuries of history. The most impressive place was the Charola, which was the private oratory of the Knights Templar, inside the fortress. I strongly advise you to go with a guide, as it makes the experience much more enriching. Otherwise many of the details would be missed. It was a pity there were several areas under renovation, and some not very well cared for, but overall it was well worth the visit.

The convent has such rich history and detailed architecture. It was really a pleasant experience to visit this area. The medieval aura of the convent brought a delightful vibe as well, as it was amazing to see all the different rooms, and the gardens. I really recommend this sight seeing trip to make, because surrounding the area, there are cafes and restaurants to eat at nearby.

Fantastic place to visit. A huge erstwhile convent, with high quality renaissance buildings, wonderful ceiling painting, beautiful cloisters, dormitories, kitchens and dining halls. There are also beautiful gardens. There has been good past renovation and this is still on going. We spent several hours there in a family group aged 4 to 67 and all enjoyed it. Good café with refreshments available. Small high quality gift shop.

Magnificent Templar structure including a temple, chapter house and castle situated imposingly on a hill overlooking the town of Tomar. The centerpiece of the temple, the octagonal Charola, is particularly stunning even though its colours have faded overtime. Although sadly parts have fallen into ruin, the adjacent chapter house is also impressive with its spiral staircases at either end taking you up to and down from the upper level. The faded facades are also well worth examining.

Unlike some other convents around PT that are too crowded to enjoy, this one is still not receiving as many tourists so going around feels so much more intimate (and spiritual). Absolutely gorgeous building, putting many other monuments to shame, with dozens of little nooks. Hopefully the areas currently under renovation will be available to visit soon. Would recommend a hike from the Aqueduct to the convent and then on to the castle.

Utterly spellbinding and beguiling what a place. Atop the hill above Tomer is the last refuge in Europe of the Knights Templar . Well worth the €6 to get in the archtecture and history within these walls is jot to be missed . If you are in Portugal this is a must see.

Convento de Cristo was a huge surprise. I didn't had a clue about the magnificence of this monument. If you're in Tomar, you really need to visit it. Please wear comfortable shoes, because the visit will take sometime ☺️

Amazing place to visit in Tomar. That's a very ancient castle built by templars, and it's huge with a lot of sightseeing spots on the valley below. Totally recommend to go, although bare in mind that you may loose some time in finding a parking spot: it's usually pretty crowded during the summer, and you'll need to pay a small parking bill (1.2€ for one hour and a half)

Was very very interesting and amusing to see this historical building. If you like seeing the architecture and all divisions of historic buildings then this one is a must. Totally worth it for us. Plus you have the Castle walls and garden to walk arround as well.

(October 2023) construction going on so the entrance has moved to the far road side temporarily. You can get into the gardens for free which are beautiful and worth visiting! Tickets for the inside are €10 (€5 for certain age groups) but definitely worth it, very beautiful inside:)

Amazing historical experience with monastery cloisters, bakery, cisterns, patios and nice views. Combines different styles and architectural features but the highlight is the church interior. You can see it all in few hours or squeeze it in about an hour or so if you rush through the cloisters and patios.

Breathtaking. A must see! The cathedral and convent have been under construction for some time... But slowly it's being revealed and it's outstanding! Parking can be difficult but don't give up and also don't forget to pay. There is a pay station there in the culdesac. Also located there is a nice cafe. A pleasure to take a coffee ☕ break. Pro tip: Walk around the side of the structure and look for the aqueduct. It is the end 6 km long structure built in the 15th century. :)

Spent 3 hours through the cloisters and rooms of this medieval monastery and castle. Worth the trip, with all its intricate art works and functional spaces. The only regret was that the administrating authority could be collecting the tree-laiden orange trees, rather then let them be destroyed by birds or fall off the branches as they ripen😂 maybe cross-feed the cafetaria with free/fresh orange juice. Wasted opportunity 😔

Magnificent even on a rainy autumn day. :) You can spend hours exploring its countless cloisters and the adjacent Templars castle. Definitely a must, there's no wonder it's a UNESCO world heritage site.

The incredible Convent of Christ located within the walls of the Templar Castle at Tomar. The Convent dates from 12thC and features a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Arab architecture and the amazing round church (rotunda) was modelled after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The church is simply astounding!

This place was magical. However, it would be good to see more about the knights. The kitchen could have been decked out. One room could be furnished so that we can see how those who stayed at the convention lived.

Been there during winter time. Literally had the whole place on our own. But don't be mistaken. This is a place you shouldn't be missed when in Tomar. But better to rent a car as it quite out of the way. Absolutely gorgeous and historical.

Entrance fee to the convent was 10euros but the castle grounds, walls and the ruins are free. A great example of military castles inspired by Islamic architecture. Put aside a few hours since you can easily get lost in the convent

One of my favorite historical places in Portugal. There is so much to discover that one can not see it in just one go! Tickets wise, if you are also going to visit Batalha and Alcobaca Monasteries I would recommend buying the Combined ticket/the Heritage Route ticket (€15).

There is limited paid parking outside of the Convent of Christ. More indoor parking spaces at street level. From street level, we walked stairs and uphill for 15 minutes on Saturday, July 15, 2023. The ticket is €6 for adults. The ticket is selling inside of the Convent of Christ. We spended 2 hours there.

If you are in Tomar (even if you don’t love history) you must visit the Convent. It is one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Santarem and is steeped in history. You can get a glimpse of where the monks lived in the 15th century, see priceless works of art and marvel at incredible architecture. The Convent is much bigger than what it seems and there are many things to discover, so set aside about 3-4 hours for the complete tour.

One of a kind experience given its vastness while wandering around the complex! It is combination of Romanic, Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural styles as a consequence of long construction and expansion time, all rolled up into one truly astonishing masterpiece! Definitely worth to visit if in Portugal!

Great place to go if you love history and are interested in the Knights Templar. Lots of space to walk around and there are lots of places to explore. Worth the €6 entrance fee.

I am so glad we visited this place. We went with a tour group and it was easy to buy tickets and visit the place. It is located on top of a hill but not too bad of a hike to the entrance. A former Catholic convent, you can see architecture styles from Gothic, manueline, Romanesque, it is now listed as UNESCO world heritage site. The ticket was 6 euros and there are discounts for 65 and older. The church is beautiful and you also get to tour the living quarters of the monks.

It a beautiful building, but it was in refurbishment. It is magnificent and huge. The main entrance is open, but the entrance from the left side is closed due to the construction. It is a place to visit and walk around. It was not busy when we went on a Saturday.

If you are a history history buff or simply appreciate architecture and design this place is a must visit. The convent dates back to the 12th century and has the most awe-inspiring intricate details. The round church, Charola, is a highlight. The interior is decorated with stunning frescoes and a mesmerising central altar. The convent also has a beautiful cloister. The Templar castle was closed for renovation but you can still walk around the beautiful gardens. Make sure you have enough time for this sight because I spent a few hours walking around exploring this gem.

You can drive right to the top of the hill entrance and walk the entire site. Great views of Tomar. Unfortunately the time we visited the castle was restored and couldn’t enter but you can enjoy the views and great greenery.

  • 4/5 Anna D. 1 year ago on Google
A lot of it is under renovation so you won’t be able to see all the sights. I was in awe of how ornate and grand the church was. Everything in the convent was beautiful. My favorite feature were the spiraling stairs. You can’t walk on them, but they are so pretty. The place has a lot of history and is a must see especially if you are also visiting Alcobaca and Batalha.

Beautiful building being expertly restored. Well worth a visit We went on a Monday and had the place almost to ourselves. We entered via a long walk through the forest and also enjoyed a delicious coffee and Portuguese tart in a nice cafe just outside the castle.

Free castle visit. You can drive right to the top of the hill entrance and walk the entire site. Great views of Tomar. Also a restaurant on top parking area to grab gelato, water, etc.

Well worth the visit! The main church is simply stunning. Only regret was the manuline window was closed. Factor at least 1.5 hrs to visit. Paid parking available close by. Plan to spend a bit of time in Tomar as well.

Beautiful site but after you’ve visited a lot of churches and convents it’s a lot of effort. 10 E. If you chose to do it buy your ticket online and get there early. It’s the line next tot he church line. Otherwise you’ll have to stand in a long line down the way to buy your tickets …FROM A MACHINE! After monastery tour. Sadly you’ll have to get back in line for church (free) whereas it used to be included as part of monastery tour.

It´s history folks and a lot of it...Knights Templar...You bet ya...Beautiful and enduring over time...If you can hit it early in the morning, usually it´s not crowded an allows you time to take it all in...A supporter of the economy of Portugal since 2016

Most beautiful and exclusive intricate convent of its scale. Manueline, gothic , Renaissance and medical all combined into one. A must see for €6, it’s a conservation of history and art, including convent and its garden. Minimum 2 hours to brows thru all chambers including 6 cloisters, mais center Templar knights area and chambers plus kitchen, underground reservoir, oil keep, and many others. Educational and informative. Amazing architecture all in one location and just wander in all the beauties
