Great museum and very informative. It’s a shame that this historical building was basically stripped down and modernized on the interior. I suggest adding replicas of things that existed there before, especially on the first floor where it goes through the history of immigration. Seems like a filler room like they didn’t know what to do with the space. Also it was kind of sad seeing the pictures of the hallway leading to the medical examination room, and comparing to how it is now, blocked up with walls for the exhibit. It would be better to try and be historically accurate to the layout of the building, instead of closing rooms off. Also would have been cool if instead of drawing lines on the ground, they had rebuilt the shower and changing room areas for people to see, and maybe add cool information inside the stalls. Also, at the end of the exhibit, it would be cool to have an interactive experience where you can look up a family member’s name that you know immigrated to North America, and see if their name shows up on any former passenger lists. I assume these names are on file somewhere? Washington DC does something similar where you can look up relatives that fought in WW2. Really added to the experience.

Very good museum, it's my fourth time I see it. Don't miss the terrace, you can see the giant dock cranes from above. No need to book in advance, I just bought the ticket at the entrance.

Honestly, I can’t give a full review. I arrived in the half-hour before the museum closed and couldn’t get any tickets to the paid exhibition. But there’s a free lift ride up to the top of the giant ship hull. I could look out into the horizon, much like MAS. This experience is complimented with ground arrows pointing towards different large cities.

Nice museum. Beautiful building. Situated at the north edge of the city, close to the MAS, along the right bank of the river. Definitely worth a visit, in an upcoming neighborhood 'Het eilandje'.

Visit 4/5/23 in the morning, price for students €6. The museum is very interesting, going into detail about the emigration to the New World / Americas, the passengers last days in Europe and their journey. English translation is not provided for every single image / object, but mainly for the big historical context boards. But at the ticket office they give you a small booklet with the translation and summary of the most important elements in this museum. Some of the videos they show, interview to passengers, are translated, others not. Regardless, this museum is highly Recommended :-)

What a find. This museum gives a clear picture of the migration from Europe in a clear and easy to understand manner. The exhibits are well done and peak the interest level. We just sort of stumbled into it - when visiting Antwerp be sure to save a few hours for this amazing and under used place.

(Translated by Google) Very interesting trip through the history of emigration from Europe to America, in which this shipping company played an important role. Curious the fact, duly documented and exposed, that fundamental names like Einstein passed through here. In good time, the installations of the Red Star Line became an interesting museum, whose visit is highly recommended.

Great museum about a very interesting historical event. For any history buffs this is definitely worth a visit as it tells the story of the transatlantic migration as both an economic and social history. There are some nice personal experiences recorded by passengers aboard these ships. The museum is fairly small and limited in scope, but for anyone interested in the topic it is a must. Furthermore it manages to remain topical by including unrelated migration stories, including recent ones. The guide was charming and drew some interesting parallels between 19th-20th century migration laws, scepticism and discrimination and current migration issues. All in all a nice visit that doesn't take too long, you can see everything in a few hours or less.

One of the best museums in Antwerp. Very well presented - the history of immigration, the stories of the travellers, their adventures and dreams. I've been there with my kids and they learned a lot.

Came to the city and this museum was on the top of my list. Did definitely not disappoint! I loved it and will recommend it to anyone who is interested in the topic. I have also been to Ellis Island and to see the other side, and so many more stories. Really loved it. I was there around 14:30h and was just about done at 17h when the museum closed. I took my time, read everything and had to rush a bit through the last two rooms. Which was a shame. So I think illness back one day 😊

Very fun and informative museum. We took a guide which was totally worth it. If you want to climb the tower you should be prepared to go up a lot of steps or to take the elevator. The museum also wasn't crowded at all which was very nice.

Disappointing visit, paid €10 for an adult ticket (it will be €6 for students between 18 to 26 years old), yet most of the displays are explained in Dutch, I think. Only interactive displays with monitors provided explanations in different languages. Barely understood what was going on, spend most of my time at the interactive display as these are the only ones with English explanations. Would not recommend English speaking tourists to visit as you may barely understand what is going on, unless you use Google translate.

Very interesting museum, more or less full of photos, ship models, ship equipment and travel supplies, quite well arranged, interesting even for children - in the museum there are suitcases with tasks intended to open and solve problems, very nicely told story of people who emigrated to America, informative, educative, builded with high-quality, entrance fee is adequate, English-speaking staff, toilets available, parking is possible somewhere on the street, but we went by foot, I recommend it

Not so big Museum about refugees. Children friendly: there is a table with chairs at the entrance for kiddos and during the tour there're small boxes on the floor to discover. A lot of different forms of exhibitions, many shapes, light, video, subjects. In one place you can even smell the scent! Awesome!

Absolutely fantastic museum with so much information on not just the Red Star Line, but on the history of Belgium, and a real social overview of Europe through the last few centuries. Great exhibits on migration, social policy and cultural divides. And of course, plenty on boats and shipping! Lots to read, as well as plenty of interactive displays too. And the viewing tower at the end is excellent! Very good value for money, with enough content to last 3-4 hours!

Nice museum with reflections on migration and humans wish to a new better world in the past and in the present with food for thought on the future. Happy to have had some real & good food & drinks at the Upper deck café at museum venue.

If you are looking for an interactive and educational adventure with your kids, then I recommend this museum. It is easy to reach by car (have no idea how you get there by public transport ?) and there are parking places in the area. The museum was a departure point to the USA back in days, and still have the same name (the red stat line). You can read and see many interesting facts and stuff. The museum takes you back in time in a way u feel how a refugee lived in the 1920s. As for kids: they get at the entrance a book with a mission to find suitcases filled with orders, questions and foto's. I truly don't advise this place for families with kids beneath 5 years old. There is not much interactive things to do for their age. The staff where very kind and friendly tho!

A great museum about the history of the migration of Europeans to America by ship. The exposition of all the stages show how people had to go to true al the stages before entering the ship and is fantastic. It's a new museum and very family friendly. A must do if you are in Antwerp.

Reasonable quality/price museum, as you can find out it goes about the immigration through Belgium, what I would not recommend to visit is the bar on the 1st floor if you aren’t happy to pay 2,00€ for tap water in a glass or 2,50€ for a glass without gas of cola... for example... they should serve what you pay for, just saying...

This museum about the red star line and the their boat trips around the world brings you stories, testimonies and art about these interesting and often dangerous voyages. There are also lockers available, but because of the covid crisis the cafetaria is not open.

Very interesting and intense museum. The exhibition is complete and really well done, going from general informations to different personal stories of immigrants, who speaks through videos and objects (screens always cleaned!) The only negative side is the staff very strict on opening hours (we were kindly kicked out 5 minutes earlier and we were looking at the last two vitrines of the last room...) and keep in mind to book your ticket online, at the desk we have been told that the museum was complete while a couple minutes later we bought them from the website. Just a single episode, the museum is really nice!!

I love it! If you are a migrant, are interested in that topics, or just like to know a bit about history, you can't miss this museum. It's small and you can finish the visit fast. Don't expect a huge museum with antiques and collections, but it's really worth it. It has awsome stories, testimonies and audiovisual that explains the huge migration from Antwerp to New York for more than 2 million people during the period of 1873 and 1935 on board of the Red Star Line.

The company was founded by Clement Griscom, who led it from its founding until the International Mercantile Marine Co. took it over in 1902. Red Star Line survived IMM's financial crisis in 1915. In the 1930s Red Star Line was part of Arnold Bernstein Line.[1] The company declared bankruptcy in 1934.[4] It operated until 1935 when it ceased trading. Its assets were eventually sold to the Holland America Line.

(Translated by Google) Nice museum, which reminds us that immigration has always existed, and that it concerns many Belgians and Europeans, in search of an even more welcoming country not so long ago. Downside: the content of the museum is quite redundant, we cut short the visit without being in a hurry. The panoramic view is not that panoramic and mainly overlooks industrial buildings. Conclusion: what to do if you like museums, but not essential 🤓 (Original) Chouette musée, qui nous rappelle que l'immigration a toujours existé, et qu'elle concerne de nombreux belges et européens, en quête d'un pays plus accueillant encore il n'y a pas si longtemps.

(Translated by Google) The Red Star Line or Société Anonyme de Navigation Belge-Américaine (SANBA) was a Belgian shipping company that operated a regular service between Antwerp and New York and sometimes between Antwerp and Philadelphia. It is the Belgian version of the Holland-America Line that maintained the service between Rotterdam and New York in the Netherlands. The company belonged to the International Navigation Company (later International Mercantile Marine Company), was founded in 1872 and in 1873 the first ship sailed the ocean. In 1935 the company went bankrupt as a result of the stock market crash of 1929. In the Antwerp Red Star Line Museum, the history of the Red Star Line of the same name has been brought to life in the historic buildings since 2013.

Professional display of photos history of emigration to the USA from Antwerp. An eye opener of the passage of passengers in the ship's taking them their accommodation in the different classes on board. I spent over two hours it was the highlight of my week. I was invited was sceptical but was totally won over a day to remember. Stanley Benard

Excellent museum. I enjoyed reading about the history of migration, its many driving factors and dangers, but the personal accounts of some of the starline passengers and crew members were my favourite part of the exhibition, along with the fact that you actually stand where those people left for their new lives, too. The exhibition mainly consists of texts and exclusive photographies and posters, but there are some very interesting digital elements as well. I highly recommend.

This is a museum in the former Red Star terminal, which was a place where people went to check in to board a ship to cross to the US. Here they were disinfected, checked by a doctor, checked by immigration for visa etc and finally allowed to board their ships. Interesting for a quick visit and to reflect on those who move to a new country and new life.

Lovely museum about migration through the ages with a focus on migration between Antwerp and the new world, facilitated by the red star line. The museum follows a chronograph time line and zooms on on the journey and experience of a.few migrants.

Completely worth it. A must see on any visit to Antwerp. Easy to understand and paints a clear picture of the migration story and the role the red star line played. Very informative and staff can answer any questions you nay have. Easy to reach by e scooter, bike or foot from Antwerp Central. 💯 Recommend

A stunningly well layed out and interesting museum. I tells the history of the shipping line and the journey of the immigrants from all over Europe who made their way to Antwerp before embarking to the new world. We spent over two hours looking around and agreed that there was still enough to warrant another visit. Do not miss the view of the docks from the viewing platform.

Interesting museum about a company that facilitated mass emigration to the USA and Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Good historical information, mainly through reading wall panels. Small, unobtrusive gift shop by the entrance, not herded through it and given the hard sell.

very interesting museum! there's a route through the museum you can easily follow, with a lot of historical information on not only the red star line, but also the history of migration! the (temporary?) exhibition about refugees was worth the extra 2€, it was done so beautifully and showed so much respect for the people they interviewed. absolutely recommend visiting!

One of the top 5 museums I have visited. It is not only beautifully designed, content as well appears thought through. One the one hand you are being given the broader picture about European emigration to the US from roughly 1850 to 1950. There are numerous individual stories then to illustrate and give insight. Captivating and enriching, even our 10 and 12 year old children were fascinated and we spent two hours in it, not regretting a minute of it.

Really interesting museum. There are lot of stories and memories of what lived the people who tried to find a new life away from home. Highly recommended. The museum is free with the city card. You can place you backpack in a security box for free (to close it you need a 1€ coin or you can ask for a box coin at the ticket office)

Built in part of the original shipping company's buildings, this museum is more about the migration of people from Europe to the Americas, with many moving stories of individuals. The actual Red Star Lines history is covered but is not the main focus. Worth a visit, especially if the weather is a bit rubbish.

  • 5/5 Baking B. 1 year ago on Google
Loved this experience! Found this museum on a very wet rainy day in Antwerp and glad I did. The personal stories are so interesting and really shows how important emigration was in our society. The fact this museum is in an original location for the Red Star Line only adds to its authenticity and fascination. Free access to lockers where you need to leave your coats and bags. Small gift shop with interesting items.

Great museum about the company that used to transport European people to Canada and America in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was a really nice exposition with explanations in Dutch, French and English. Lots of old props, interactieve parts,... Beautiful renovated building. The building where everyone departed from. Real 5 star experience.

Absolutely fascinating museum. Give yourself 2-3 hours to thoroughly enjoy it. If you know you have family that immigrated to America from Europe or Russia, try to find out first if they came via Antwerp. I was stunned to learn this was where my grandfather and his parents came to America through from Kiev.

Modern museum that gives a good view on the overseas migration of thousands of people to America, looking for a better life. Took us about 2 hours. There is also the possibility to visit the panorama rooftop, but unfortunately it was a rainy day and honestly there isn't so much to see.

Wonderful experience. Very pleasantly surprised. A fantastic way to put migration and emigration into historical context. I recommend this to everyone. Possibly tops Ellis Island for me.
