A must visit for a music culture lover! There were very few people, so I could peacefully appreciate those collections. The collections and descriptions were very good, I learnt many things. It's a pity that not no many people know this meseum.

Interesting museum about musical instruments. I appreciate the interactivity. Each object has a reference number and you can learn more about it by entering this number on a dedicated website on your phone. It gives access to an audio which allows you to listen to the sound of the musical instruments exhibited.

This magnificent building is hosting the music instruments museum. Many objects exposed and you can listen to most of them throug a website you can reach for free. There are also, in the basement, two interesting sections. One for the brass instruments the other for the bells. It's showed the process on how to create from the raw material to the finished product .

(Translated by Google) The current late Gothic building was built between 1501 and 1504 and is the third Vleeshuis on the site. It is made of red brick and white sandstone. Although the great hall inside resembles a church, the towers of the staircases and the crowbar gables make it clear that it was a secular institution. The interior is divided into two halves, each with a span of 7.5 meters (24 feet 7 inches) - the maximum length of a structural oak beam. The bricks were burned at the site using clay from the Rupel district. The sandstone came from quarries in Balegem; interspersed with the bricks, a masonry known as "bacon layers" was created. Additional finishes were Gobertange limestone for carvings, blue stone for doors and stairs and slate for the roof.

Weren’t able to go inside, but it is quite remarkable how the brickwork of the old butchers guild building looks like bacon.

Wonderul, wonderful museum! The building served as Butcher’s hall from 1504 until 1800. After serving as a warehouse for grain and wine until 1913, it turned to a museum. There are infinitely many musical instruments inside of which you can actually listen to the sound/music. How cool is that! Additionally in the basement, there is a section explaining the belfry fabrication.

Very fun museum, filled with old music instruments. Don't skip the cellar, that's the best part. You can listen to a lot of instruments via a website (smartphone required).

This is a very interesting museum. I wish there was a button to press to hear each instrument but you can also use their website. I got told off for going into a restricted area because it wasn't roped off but it was a polite telling off. Some of the instruments are absolutely crazy. It was only about €6 to enter too.

What a wonderful place, the name is a bit Misleading. It's a museum for Al kinds of musical instruments. Use you're mobile to navigate and listen to samples. Really a must see when in Antwerp.. A big thumbs up. You won't regret it.

The building is very beautiful 😍 the museum is actually about music history in Antwerp. It has an activity booklet for kids but I would not recommend it for the small ones as there us little to touch or interect. People were super friendly and gave us great explanation about the instruments

(Translated by Google) Interesting museum about musical instruments, their history and the production of instruments. Unfortunately not entirely accessible. The museum is much larger than the exhibition shows. Unfortunately, only the ground floor and the basement are accessible to the general public. The higher floors are only accessible for specially guided visits. You get to see much less of the building itself than in the past (memories from my childhood, long ago) 😊 (Original) Interessant museum over muziekinstrumenten, de geschiedenis ervan en de productie van instrumenten.

(Translated by Google) The Vleeshuis has a huge collection of special musical instruments and it is a very special building to walk around for a low ticket price. As lay people we really lacked information and context, which unfortunately made this museum much less impressive: how did the instruments sound and from some I would have liked to have learned how they were played. This is the perfect museum for headphones, to immerse yourself in the experience! We also could not view much during corona because you could not open drawers with a lot of extra information. Therefore 3 stars: good, but really could be better.

Historic landmark of Antwerp. A must to see.

  • 3/5 T H. 1 year ago on Google
This museum aims to convey the sounds, music and dance of historic Antwerp. There is an amazing collection of ancient musical instruments. You can listen to some of the instruments and get information by using the link to your mobile phone. We were asked to turn the volume of the audio down despite being the only visitors in the museum. I couldn't find any audio reference to the singing, music and dance of poorer people, although I am sure folk and work songs must have existed in Antwerp. There is very little dance represented apart from a black and white film on a loop. It would be great to have a "soundscape" of the city with the sounds of the river, boatmen, cries of street sellers, noises of the animals etc. as this aural side of history is often missed and yet cities would have sounded so different.

(Translated by Google) Butchers House, Antwerp, Belgium The Butchers House on Myasnikov Street in Antwerp is a very interesting building. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city. At first I even thought that it was not just a building, but some kind of Gothic-style temple with turrets and spiers. It is easy to recognize it - it is striped, in a red and thin white strip. Such a drawing makes the building look like a piece of bacon - a red layer of meat and a thin layer of white lard. The building was designed and built by the architect German de Wagemaker in the 16th century. The architect was famous and, apparently, expensive, since it was he who built the Cathedral of Our Lady of Antwerp. Turrets with sharp spiers look very nice, because of them the house resembles a castle. Previously, this building belonged to the Butchers Guild, here on the ground floor there were meat rows where not only they sold meat, but contracts were signed for the supply of meat. In addition, there were reception rooms on the upper floors. A slaughterhouse was very well located near the House of Butchers. But in 1795, the Butchers Guild was dissolved by decree of local authorities. Perhaps the authorities did not like the rapidly growing wealth and, accordingly, the influence of the butchers, perhaps they were afraid of some kind of political change.  Now in this house is a museum of history, archeology and applied arts, which opened in 1913. Now the museum has reoriented to music.

The museum itself is in a very nice building. The collection seems nice. The most interesting part is the bells and the casting process in the basement. During the spring and summer months, it is possible to book a guided visit to the Antwerp cathedral tower. The visit to Vleeshuis museum is part of this guided visit where they explain some of the history of the bells. The visit to the tower is by far the most interesing part of the guided tour. Inside the tower you get some extra explanation on every new floor. The view from the top is wonderful!

Small museum of music in former meat market. It has few instruments and not super top quality but it conveys the context for music making and dancing quite nicely. Sheet music, brass instrument workshop, few musicians contracts and notes from the city archive enrich the displays. The guided tour and music fragments are available through online app.

Beautiful museum in an old restorated church. You have to book an appointment online during these infectious times and it is really easy. I have an A-card and it is even free with that, just enter your card number. The exhibitions at this moment were missing some information to be honest, I am more of a reader in museums and there was not so much story behind it, just a showroom exhibition in this case. But the museum is gorgeous and you should definitely visit it once!
