(Translated by Google) Maritime open-air museum Boeiweide, always worth a visit. The story of the Baienweide starts in 1960 when the training ship "Mercator" is taken out of service. In 1961, Prince Albert inaugurated the ship as a museum on the Left Bank. A year later, the meadow around the ship is also put into use as a "maritime open-air museum". Buoys, anchors, barrels, screws, a cannon, etc. tell about 'life along and on the Scheldt'. The Mercator has been in Ostend since 1964 and a number of objects have been moved. In the future, the 'maritime open-air museum Boeiweide' will be part of the Museum aan de Stroom, the new museum about the city, its inhabitants and the harbor. The "meadow" is being completely rethought and redesigned. Beacons and buoys A ship must be able to navigate safely. We refer to all fixed and floating objects that provide this as the "fairway markers". Walt is under that? A light platform, a lighthouse, a beacon with or without light, but also a lightship, a buoy, a barrel, ... The oldest known marker is fire. At night fires were lit on dune tops, hilltops or cliffs to announce the proximity of the coast. For better visibility, this fire was placed on top of structures, which led to lighthouses. From the 18th century onwards, fires were also lit at sea, and in treacherous shallows where the construction of a lighthouse was not possible, so-called fire ships or light ships were anchored. They had a striking color and were equipped with a tower with a powerful light source. Most lightships have now been replaced by light platforms or super buoys. In 1994, the last Belgian lightship, the "Westhinder" III, was taken out of service. It will have a permanent place in the museum dock of the MAS. Although buoys are less known than lighthouses or lightships, they nevertheless deserve a much more prominent place in the history of shipping: the first mention of a buoy dates back to the 13th century. The Belgian coastal waters are home to more than 150 buoys, while some 280 buoys between Vlissingen and the Antwerp roadstead ensure a safe passage on the Western Scheldt. What can you discover on the buoy meadow? • Ship's propellers Ships are sometimes equipped with two or four propellers. They contribute to the so-called propulsion force. Multiple screws allow for better maneuverability. • Anchors The number of anchors that must be on board and the conditions they must meet are laid down by law. They are also used to hold the ship in a certain position (waiting for a roadstead), to facilitate certain maneuvers or to be able to perform emergency maneuvers. On the Boeiweide one can distinguish 'stick anchors' with a fixed stick and a loose stick. The pole turns the anchor when it hits the bottom, so that one of the arms can work its way into the seabed. The other anchors on the pasture are stockless anchors, or "patent anchors." These anchors have movable arms. There is also a mushroom anchor. • Cannon In the past, a cannon was used to indicate an emergency or to cross a line • Clocks A clock is a so-called "sound signal", which is used, for example, in fog. They can be put on buoys as well as on vessels. Vessels longer than 12 meters are required to have a clock on board. • Buoys and beacons The buoy evolved from a primitive reed or wooden version to a mastodon that is sometimes more than 12 meters high. They are built in such a way that they have sufficient buoyancy, have different shapes, are painted in all kinds of colors and equipped with all kinds of lights. The buoy and beacon procession is endless, as evidenced by the many names: light buoy, roaring buoy, stabbing beacon, radar buoy, shore beacon, wreck buoy, spar buoy, mooring buoy, buoyancy beacon, head beacon, anchor buoy, etc.

Needs some drastic update! Provides some nice views on the right side of the city but some of the bushes are cutting of the great views. The city should add some extra trash points.

Not your usual museum. This is an open air park with some very interesting sea and war related objects all over the place that are worth looking at. I found it very amusing to walk here because the scheldt ricer is very close by so you get beautiful vibes to walk in the greenery next to a river with some attractions here and there. There is a kids playground area with nice equipment too !

A wonderful park!!! I recommend it for a walk with children, there are various entertainments and your children will not be bored. Also a very nice view of the old, central district of Antwerp and, accordingly, the river Scheldt. You can just come and meditate or smoke a joint and watch the barges 😌 there are also great cycling routes and running tracks

(Translated by Google) Museum? Really? The link with Antwerp as a port city (and the nautical school a bit further) seemed clear to me, although the whole appears more like a lawn / playground with some buoys than an open-air museum with a playground. You are not in the least encouraged to take a quick look at the shackles. If this was the intention, they would have failed enormously. Nice to stay, though, and certainly if you have children. (Original) Museum? Echt?
