only deducting 1 star for the difficulty in booking and communicating while there - only 1 staff member spoke english when we got there and she was super helpful, but when we couldnt find her.... meanwhile, its a wonderful place to stop for the night when you get to Fahlensee Lake. the location is fantastic, dark skies = starry nights, rosti with bacon and egg was tasty, and ask for a room overlooking the lake. the showers are common in the basement and timed, it wasnt a problem using it, toilets on every floor.

We went there for lunch as we were on a hike. We had a mixture of all hot items but every single meal was delicious. It has been a while since I’ve had such good German hiking cuisine. The Rosti dishes are the best ones. No matter what you take, take it with the Rosti side option! To be fair, the Rosti meals with egg and bacon are huge and very versatile filling. My recommendation would be to share those and for example share another dish. We shared a cheese Rosti with egg and bacon with a schnitzel salat. You can also share anything else with those. For drink, the hot ginger-orange drink is amazing and the homemade iced tea as well. You can basically not fail with whatever you take. I kind of have to add, that for German standards, the prices are very high.

We went there for a lunch after the hike and were disappointed. The waitress an older lady that was supposed to take care of us was really rude and arrogant. She probably could not speak english but when we tried it with our broken deutsch she pretended to not understand. She had a sour face the whole time. Food was expensive and sucked. It was really greasy and we felt a bit sick afterwards.. Would not recommend spending money there.

Just a nice place to get a rest a drink and some food. They offer a variety of local drinks and good food ! The view is just amazingly beautiful and there are when the weather is nice a lot of people. The hike up there will take you around 45 minutes and down it goes a lot faster.

Beautiful spot by the lake. We stopped here for refreshments (haha yes beer!) while hiking in the mountains. The staff were super friendly and it would be a great place to stay. Their homemade iced tea was also super good! You will need cash here

Amazing place with an unbelievable view of the lake ans mountains! It is a perfect spot to have a drink and rest while hiking. It also has a lot of potential as a holiday spot, meaning you can book a room for someone as a present. I haven't spent the night there, we just had drinks, but considering a booking room for my father in law as a birthday present. Considering it's Switzerland and it it's AMAZING location, it is really not expensive. Reccomending it to everyone and definitely will be visiting it again in the future with my boyfriend!

Nice friendly people, very nice food and a place to rest after a long hike. I had a 10 person dorm to myself but it was very cheap and included a decent breakfast. It is however very basic and stone cold up on the top floor. Shoes are left in a special room in the basement, and you wear house shoes. Bathrooms are clean. The lake is amazing. And don’t miss Saxer Lücke which is 30 min hike up from the hostel.

What a beautiful location. Very nice staff, good food, clean rooms and even a hot shower! All with an incredible view. Truly amazing.

We hiked only for a day and passed by this very nicely located guest house in the mountains of Appenzell. It's literally in between huge, (gigantic), (massive) mountains and behind it is a calm and cold lake..OMG! This is really a must-visit place. The restaurant is cool, clean toilets, and the service was good.

We had lunch in this ma0gic scenery. We also add traditional dancing and music which was lucky happening that day. Very welcoming service, good traditional food

By Swiss standard, it's probably a four star service and room condition. But by no mean I am criticizing the place. Location is a paradise. It is well organized for young and old. I recommend it for families too. Food is great, and room is clean. I would hope the booking process had been more modern so non-German speakers feel more welcomed. After hiking 3 hours in the rain from Sigelbahn, and having to stay overnight to see both Falensee and saxerlucke, I think taking the cable car from Frümsen to Staubern (end at 10pm) would have been a better route for families.

Stopped here for a beer. Nice service, awesome views. Clean toilets. Next time I'll try the Rösti, it looked really good !

This review is about the restaurant as we didn't stay overnight. In our case we were welcomed kindly by a young woman/waiter that was super friendly, spoke English very well and attended us perfectly, we had lunch & drinks and can't complain about anything, the food might not be Michelin star worthy but was definitely good, the local beer was also very nice.

Very rude, they don’t seem to want to have guests booking rooms.

Stunning location, lovely staff, excellent food, really good standard for a mountain hut. Warmly recommended, if you want to do amazing hikes in the area and set off early in the morning. Rösti is fantastic!

Very nice place. We stayed 1 night and enjoyed our stay. The food is really good. It is pretty expensive and they where not too happy to take visa card payment.

If you are in for a great lunch break stop here. Rösti is absolutely the favorite dish of then house and should not be missed!
