Not
many
mountain
guesthouses
offer
such
a
great
selection
of
scenic
hiking
trails.
Bollenwees,
Staubern,
Hoher
Kasten,
and
very
many
more
are
all
rewarding
day
tours
from
here.
It
is
true
that
you
can
only
reach
Plattenbödeli
on
foot.
The
nearest
carpark
is
at
least
1
hour
away
in
any
direction,
and
the
paths
are
often
steep,
through
fields
of
cows
and
unpaved.
You
can
choose
modern
rooms
with
ensuite
bathrooms,
but
you
miss
out
on
the
inimitable
character
of
the
original
guesthouse.
What
the
older
rooms
lack
in
comforts,
they
more
than
make
up
for
in
experience
value.
Yes,
the
old
wood
creaks
and
you
have
to
use
communal
toilets,
but
you
get
a
rare
chance
to
perpetuate
the
tradition
of
modest,
nature-conscious
tourism
in
the
alps.
You'll
be
woken
by
birdsong
and
cowbells.
There
is
one
power
outlet
by
the
door.
The
basin
and
jug
in
the
room
are
purely
decorative.
The
boot
room
includes
a
rack
of
crocs
for
guest
use.
The
communal
toilets
and
showers
were
always
perfectly
clean.
During
my
two-night
stay
in
high
summer,
there
was
never
a
wait
for
the
toilets,
but
often
a
queue
for
the
two
showers.
The
showers
cost
1
CHF
per
minute
to
moderate
usage
-
the
timer
pauses
when
you
stop/start
the
water,
so
2
CHF
worth
proved
to
be
plenty.
Breakfast
was
the
weakest
part
of
the
experience.
In
a
region
where
even
the
most
basic
hotels
have
extravagant
breakfast
buffets,
the
range
and
quality
seem
a
bit
stingy
here.
Simply
put,
it
is
completely
useless
for
fuelling
up
before
a
day
of
hiking.
The
selection
is
limited
to
the
bare
minimum
of
charcuterie,
Birchermüsli
and
a
fruit
salad.
If
you
need
lactose-
or
gluten-free
alternatives,
you
won't
find
them
here.
Dinner
was
a
different
story:
extensive
menu,
quality
ingredients,
sensible
portions
and
a
clearly
talented
kitchen
team.
The
front-of-house
team
was
also
extremely
professional.
