Went on $10 Tuesdays and it was such a fun way to spend an afternoon. Beautiful collection of art and sculptures. We easily spent about 2 hours just browsing the different galleries in the museum. I had no idea it was such a huge collection. Loved the placards next to the art pieces with the info and history of it. The bronze sculptures have so much detail, it was so cool to see them all up close. Easy metered parking right out front on a Tuesday. Museum staff were friendly.

If you take a good look at the facade of the building, you feel like you are about to enter a Western USA Canyon, once inside you fell like you are in one. Many of the Western & Wildlife paintings look like photos exquisitely detailed. My second trip here-first was for the Warhol Western exhibit-, not to be missed the Jewel Box, Native artist paintings & current Modern art exhibition. Tuesday’s $10 entrance and open late.

This museum is a stunning remembrance to the places and spaces where the continued quest by men for power started the ethnic cleansing of the true owners of America. As part native, it broke my heart to fully take in what my ancestors endured and the beautiful cultural land that was stolen. I also appreciate the care that so many artist have taken to tell the story. It's very interesting to see how differently the native artists portray the history and the method of the art. It's less historical and more perception/emotion/interpretation based. Our doscent Karen Swanson told the stories of each area with accuracy and neutrality. Often this time is romanticized as "Cowboy & Indian" but it means something different depending on which side you're standing on. I do believe this diverse collection creates an opportunity to consider them both. This is truly an art collection rather than a museum. You don't see many artifacts and authentic goods and clothing made by the Indians. The James family's love for the story of the West is evidenced here. It certainly adds a unique vibe and perspective to the art scene in St Pete. The gallery was built with thought and precision. But expect to see the white man here more than the Indian.

Nice museum with a unique collection. We aren't gurus of this type of art so it took us about 40 minutes to go through the whole thing. Beautiful paintings of the American west and wildlife.

A wonderful museum with great sculptures and paintings of the west including landscape, Native Americans. Cowboys and animals from the west and around the world. There is a large display of Native American jewelry. Plan on spending around two hours here. One of the best museums in Southwest Florida. Highly recommend and a museum I will return to.

We love museums and exhibitions. St Pete is clearly one of the best cities for them. The James has always been on our to-do list. Bringing in the Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibits finally made us make the trip across the Bay and check it off the list. Extremely friendly and helpful staff are there to help you. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time here. It is huge and there is just so much great art works to see and learn about. Obviously, the Adams and Butcher exhibits were simply marvelous. Those men made/make magic with old school methods. $20 is well worth the visit. Way more for the money than many other art museums.

A wonderful Native American and Western art collection. I was amazed by this collection. Also saw Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibit. Breathtaking photos. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely return with some out of state visitors soon.

I have been to museums all over the world with many different genre and wasn't sure if I would be impressed by a western and wildlife museum. This museum has a very extensive collection of statuary and paintings and other art pieces that will take you about 2 hours to view. I was incredibly impressed with the diversity of pieces with respect to piece size, time period subject matter. My wife was also skeptical that she would enjoy the museum and she now states that it is one of her favorite. Don't miss this collection. It's also located in the beautiful part of town as a bonus.

I like the idea of what the museum could be more than what it actually is. I wish they would have shown more historically accurate art, more artifacts, and found ways to represent our true history more than what they do. As is, it’s a very modern art museum with a bit of western influence. Worth checking out nonetheless.

We came for the Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher Exhibit and were blown away by all of the Incredible Western Art. The paintings and sculptures were absolutely beautiful. It took us 2 hours just to make our way to the Adams exhibit, which paled in comparison to the Western Art and I am a big fan of Ansel Adams and both the Adams & Butcher exhibits were informative and beautiful. The staff were friendly and informative. I will be bringing family and friends here again for sure. Great gift shop as well.

It's a beautiful building, worth the admission just to go in there and experience it. The art though is just okay and at times laughable. If you are a connoisseur, don't expect much and enjoy the atmosphere.

Phenomenal collection of art relating to and by Native Americans. The highlight of my visit was the jaw dropping "Jewel Box" room. Whoa! It houses a stunning collection of intricately crafted Native American jewelry. I highly recommend this museum of you are in the St. Petersburg area.

The artwork was stunning. We were able to visit for free thanks to our local library. Otherwise, it could add up depending on your party size. I'm pretty sure they had discounts but you'd have to look them up. My 14 and 7-year-old boys enjoyed looking at everything. Parking was inexpensive and right around the corner from the museum. It is definitely worth the visit.

Amazing 👏 stupendous, BRAVO!!! We thoroughly enjoyed the James and were surprised by how awesome it is. In Washington DC Native American museum wasn't as nice as the James and their exhibits. Parking is in the same building, the garage is attached, and there are several good places to eat. The gift shop was a little lacking, but who cares when the museum is outstanding 👌 👏

The western art was magnificent however the Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibit was spectacular. It’s worth going back to focus on the main exhibits in the museum. It’s not what you would expect to see. It’s a nice blend of paintings as well as sculptures. The Remington sketches world great surprise.

The kind of place most noteworthy for oddly, if not out of place location and collection. Maybe city-slickers get married here? First and foremost, has zero at all to do with the iconic and respected, William Roderick James, who toiled hard at producing as an artist and writer of the American West. Which is easily overlooked by all who can easily admire a hodge podge of a hedge fund collection that got too big for the living room, yet still begs architectural construction and production. And if not productive than this place still breaks the conforms of academic nor historical standards. The quiet room, free lockers, and yes, this place is an outstanding place for urban socialites to say they got married.

There are so many reasons to love and appreciate this museum we have right in our midst here in St Petersburg. This past weekend we were especially proud to bring a group of people from Texas who were completely blown away by this magnificent collection. They had to admit, coming from Texas they thought they had seen Western art - but that opinion soon changed once they entered the museum and saw the expanse and breadth of the collection including all the Native American art and more. They all said it was one of the biggest highlights of their trip. I also personally love this museum since it is a collection for works done by living artists and my husband, Lance Rodgers is one of those artists who has one of his works in this very museum - what an honor! We are so fortunate to have this gem in St Petersburg!

What a fantastic museum. There's sooo much space that even if this was a crowded day (which it wasn't) I think I wouldn't have felt closed in. Kinda made me think of The American West (I wonder if this was purposely designed? If so, they achieved it). The Special Exhibit there for only a few more days here at the beginning of 2023 (until Jan 8), the quilts showcasing the history of The Black Pioneers, was exceptional. I loved the added library of books germane to this exhibit for our continued education.

We enjoyed the James Museum by accident as it wasn't on our original list of places to visit during our trip to St. Pete and were happy we got the chance to explore this beautiful museum. The facility itself is gorgeous with both the front facade and main atrium lobby being decked out in sandstone alluding to the rocky canyons of the the American West. The water feature in the lobby adds a great focal point for visitors as they enter the museum. The museum's collection was pretty extensive with the pieces being categorized into different themed sections based around the American West, Wildlife, and Native American life. Without the map, it's quite easy to get lost in the room after room of amazing pieces of art, statues, metal work and jewelry, and more. We also really loved the featured gallery centered around The Gay Rodeo in the 1980s. This gallery was a treat as we appreciated the support for the LGBTQ community during a period of time when the AIDS crisis was causing further marginalization of the gay community. This gallery was presented well and bridged the gap between the nostalgia of the American West and the reality of the human experience during that time. We would recommend this art museum for all, especially if you're an art fanatic. They were set-up with COVID safety procedures which helped us to feel comfortable and safe during our visit. Overall, a great experience that we are happy to have had.

The James Museum is very impressive. While the general theme is Western United States, there are a smattering of photos of animals from other geographic areas on display also. The doscents stationed throughout the museum are a wonderful resource for both artistic and historical information. I loved the wonderful sculptures, paintings, and photos!

A great place to spend a day! A lot of art and sculptures to see and interesting write ups to each explaining who is depicted, the artist and generally a location. If you have an interest in the old West you won't be disappointed. There is also a gift shop and restaurant there and a huge variety of places to eat on Central Avenue.

This place demands that you sign a digital COVID waiver to enter. This is not standard practice at any other business I've been to downtown. My problems with this are twofold: 1. They admittedly store the data off-site but are unable to describe their data security or encryption standards. 2. The waiver absolves them of negligence. This probably wouldn't hold up in court, but if they're following safe CDC guidelines then they shouldn't have to worry about negligent conduct of their own staff. If they're not then why would someone release them from liability for that? It's too bad too because their gift shop looks like it has neat stuff and I was ready to do some Christmas shopping. But hey, they can run their museum however they want. I just won't patronize it.

Always a great place to visit. The permanent exhibit has enough to keep you occupied for hours and is top notch in their genre. I came this time for a special exhibit of the Chinese experience in America, mostly 19th century.

The museum is very large with countless exhibits ranging from stunning paintings to fine jewelry and historic bronze statues. The building itself has very unique nodern architecture. You could easily spend several hours in here admiring everything. We got in with the Edison-Ford reciprocal membership pass and parking is only $1 an hour in the parking garage.

I could not imagine a better venue for our company's holiday party than the James Museum. It was great working with Valeria and on the day of the event, I was stress free. The venue was beautiful and required very little decorations because of how nice everything looked. I have been getting compliments for days on the event. Hope to have another event there soon!

The James Museum is a stunning venue for weddings. As a wedding planner I just wanted to take a moment to thank Valeria, Wayne and the rest of the wonderful staff at The James Museum. Working with Valeria made working at the James a breeze. She knew the museum like the back of her hand and was able to answer any of mine or my clients questions! Wayne - was able to create a beautiful amber color for the museum ballroom in order to perfect my clients vision. I just wanted to share my review and thanks to everyone at the James Museum! I attended a free teachers' night out viewing, and my spouse paid the Tuesday discount of $10. The physical museum itself is designed to resemble the cliffs and canyon walls of the southwest. The design is also acoustically perfect to carry the music of the band that was playing that night. Strategically placed windows allow natural light to enter and accentuate the pieces of art. The bronze sculptures of Native Americans are so powerful and lifelike. The paintings are amazing, and some of the wildlife paintings look like photographs. They also do tours for school groups and charge $4/student and, if requested, an additional charge of $8 for an art activity after the tour. If you love anything related to the west, Native American history, and wildlife, I highly recommend a visit to the James Museum.

My husband and I were married on May 21, 2022. To begin, Valeria, was an absolute pleasure to work with. We had to change our date last minute and she made it seamless for us; she was always very quick to respond as well. This venue is truly magical, I am Native American, so it really made the day special. It was also perfect for our party of 90, we used all 3 rooms and half of the reception hall, which was more than enough room. It's truly the best venue downtown and if I could do it all over again I would pick the James Museum over and over again.

  • 5/5 MoonNSunM J. 1 year ago on Google
The James Museum of Western and Wildlife art is exactly what it says it is. Outside you notice the shades of sandstone and greened copper, once you step inside a large atrium filled with a unique calming waterfall, featured American Indian statues and the sounds of a peaceful wooden flute. It's a high-end but non-pretentious experience in that many of the artists are still alive, and their artwork is sometimes their best piece, and sometimes it's one of their theme fitting pretty good pieces. I love love love that you can get so close to much of the artwork that you can see the brush strokes and the hand movements that made it a wonderful piece, no touching of course. I learned a lot about 3D in art.

Amazing musuem!! A lot bigger than anticipated, there was SOOO much to look at; I arrived an hour before closing and didn't have enough time to look at everything, so I highly recommend arriving early and designating at least 2-3 hours to fully explore everything.

We attended the 5th Year Anniversary Celebration and discovered the most amazing museum experience ever. In addition to being appropriate for all ages, the diverse and extensive collection was mind blowing. The music by 6volt Rodeo was sublime, even though the 13 year old was less than enthusiastic, I know it is in her memory bank for appreciation sometime in the future.

First time I ever saw this gallery from a different perspective! The kitchen is fabulous for catered events! The size and accessibility of the commercial kitchens is a catering services Dream! The have toured the gallery previously and it’s a magnificent place! I am pretty sure the architect is the same person who designed the library in Calgary, AB, CA. The sculptures are phenomenal and the art is captivating!

My understanding is the exhibits are constantly changing. It is difficult to see everything as there is not a good flow through the exhibits on the second floor. But, that also adds to the need to slow down and take some time to fully explore.

Far exceeded our expectations for Western Art on exhibit in Florida. A wonderful flow of classic, contemporary, and modern art, sculpture, and fabulous First Nations jewelry. There is something to linger over everywhere you turn. Convenient parking was only $1 per hour, to boot. We spent 90 minutes, but easily could have stayed much longer. The building is gorgeous and very spacious. $10 Tuesdays, children 6 and under are free.

I have a membership at The Dali and decided to enjoy the benefits at The James. This is probably one of the most underrated museums I've ever been to. The collection is beautifully curated. I'm likely to purchase a membership after my visit today. The staff were among the best I've run into anywhere, let alone a museum. They were welcoming and knowledgeable. It wasn't overcrowded or loud unlike many popular local museums. I was in awe and will be back.

extraordinary! The pieces of art that this collection holds are extraordinary, many very beautiful, others delicate, but most of them extraordinary and I have traveled worldwide and I am fond with many art museums. A wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of beach life. Parking is in a spaceous, attached garage on an adjacent street. Covid precautions are taken before admission and a mask is required. Admission on a Tuesday is $10 for everyone, so reasonable! There are very knowledgeable guides and Docents to answer any questions. To say the James' collection is extensive would be understated -- it is massive! And I'm sure there is much more that can be displayed on a rotating basis. The bronzes, sculptures, and paintings of nobel American Natives, colorful cowboys and girls, fiesty broncos and fiestier cattle side by side with rugged buffalo, have been created by so many extraordinary artists! For those who like just wildlife, you'll find beautiful elephants, bear, rhinos, wolves, even a gorilla! And for the jewelry buffs, you won't be disappointed! Take a Tuesday with the family and enjoy the solitude of this quiet retreat!

I wasn't sure how much I would like a museum dedicated to western art. I've never been a fan of that topic. Let me tell you, I'm so glad I went anyway!!! It was awesome! So may different kinds of mediums - oil, bronze, watercolors, pastels, pencil, ceramic, even jewelry. All different styles from traditional to modern to pop art! This is a must see in St Pete.

A really good museum. The bronze statues and modern oil paintings do real justice to a genre of art that is uniquely American. You will need more than a few hours to really take in all the amazing art work. The restaurant serves good food, but seemed a little understaffed for the lunch rush. The gift shop is quaint. Overall a great way to spend an afternoon.

The paintings are amazing from artists of today! The sculptures are so detailed it’s unbelievable. There are detailed paintings many animals as well. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone and everyone even if you aren’t a museum type person! Five stars all the way!!!

This was a unique museum which combined American Indian and Western culture with wildlife of the west. Finally got to visit the Museum Downtown located in Downtown Saint Petersburg. The entrance is majestic. The sculptures are very detailed and interesting. The Gay Rodeo presentation was very good in letting you see that it's just like any other rodeo just with nicer folk. The numerous paintings by living artists are a pleasure to view and read each description. The experience was magical and I could swear the smaller statues were looking right at me and laughing.

We had a nice time exploring this museum. I say explore because it was a bit difficult to tell which way you needed to go to see everything in each of the exhibits. The majority of the art is post 1950s but provides a great representation of Native American history. It was very interesting and respectful. Lots of work with bronze and a beautiful "Jewelry Box" section. The special exhibit at this time (and until February 14, 2021) is the Gay Rodeo. The art throughout the museum was spaced apart enough to avoid being too overwhelming and allowed us to take our time reading about and viewing each piece. We spent about 2.5-3 hours. The staff were all very nice. They performed covid-19 screenings at the entrance with a questionnaire and temperature screening. Everyone wore masks and we saw maybe 10 other people while we were in there but could easily socially distance ourselves. The gift shop was cool too, we bought a Christmas ornament and bracelets.

The venue did everything in their power to accommodate our guests and keep us all safe. Communication was seamless. The James Museum's staff set-up our floor-plan exactly how it was envisioned and even came to the rescue with extra charger plates when needed. The James Museum is one of the most unique in Saint Pete & the Greater Central Fl Area. Our organization had their first annual fundraiser Mini Miracles at The James! It was a huge success. The museum staff made the night run flawlessly. Tiffany and Stephanie + their team went above and beyond. We just could not be more grateful for their support and help the entire time. Our guests just raved about how beautiful the venue was and are already planning to return back to next years event. If you are planning a wedding, corporate party, or an annual event this is one of the best places to book and plan with! We highly recommend it. You & your guests have the night or event of your dreams!
