If you’re from overseas you may find all the first nations stuff half interesting (which feels like 75% of the museums space), but if you’re from Australia its just the same boring stuff as every other capital city museum now. How about the old days of fun things kids enjoy like dinosaurs? Our kids were bored the whole time and despite the cool building it was a flop. The 3D antarctica was the best part (which you have to pay for)

An amazing museum so rich in history, would recommend spending a few hours if visiting Canberra. It's free entry with plenty of parking. The exhibits are awesome with something to interest everyone.

Visited the National Museum of Australia for the Egyptian Exhibition, and it was a mesmerizing experience. The collection was vast and well-curated, showcasing a rich tapestry of Egypt's ancient history. Each artifact told a unique story, immersing visitors in the depths of Egyptian culture. The exhibition layout was thoughtfully designed, ensuring a smooth flow. Interactive elements added a contemporary touch, making it engaging for all ages. Highly recommend for history enthusiasts and families!

Fantastic building structure, worthy of an architectural award. It's big and with that, holds a multitude of notable history. Perched on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin, you can relax with a coffee and lunch from the cafeteria. There's lots to see and for those liberated women, a National display representing women of stature, thousands of years in sculptured stone, metal and written symbols.

A wonderful experience. Staff are extremely helpful. The venue is easy to navigate with surprises around each corner. Recommended for young and old. Great location for kids to learn about Australian history. A must next time you are in Canberra.

Another one where you need to allow plenty of time to see it all. It has disability access. I was able to drive my scooter around nearly all of it. There is a cafe there, so you can have something to eat and then continue looking.

The Carillon is a very peaceful and tranquil place. If you time your arrival when it is playing it makes the trip even more worthwhile. It is a fantastic place to take images around the lake, especially in autumn where you can see the beautiful colours of the deciduous trees.

Lots to see and explore. Great exhibitions that make you think and ponder. So much to absorb and learn. Plenty of parking. Small Kid friendly areas. Easy to navigate but also easy to get immersed in the space. Cafe available, easily spend a whole day here.

This is an amazing place for everyone. It is huge with so much to see and experience. To experience it to its full potential set aside a day. So very happy to have gone there and would highly recommend to everyone. There is cafe inside, along with a shop. Parking is available.

Beautiful place :) There is also a nice Cafe there which has lovely food. You can rest there and enjoy a meal or drink coffee and cakes. I found the cakes quite artistic as well. I also loved the souvenir shop, lots of beautiful stuff! :)

We visited National Museum of Australia during a weekday and it was not crowded. The building design is very creative. There are many exhibits which use multimedia and that makes it interesting. There is a cafe and a nice shop here. A good place to take in some history.

the NMA each time we come to Canberra. This time it was to see the Feared and Revered exhibition - which is EXCELLENT!!! 10 stars out of 5. The museum itself has changed a bit since we were last there but was lacking anything really new to see (in fact we think there are less displays than our last visit). The rotating theatre is gone, and so is the more kid focused space where your art was put into a computer. Still worth the visit but maybe only if you are seeing an advertised exhibit.

Went to the Egyptian Exhibition here. It was very well presented, quite an amazing array of exhibits that were on display! Was quite crowded but didn't feel much bothered. A note for other fellow goers, the staff will only let you into the exhibition exactly at your designated booking time or abit after, not before. Lunch at the cafe was also delicious. And even though it was so full, the food arrived amazingly quick! 👏

We visited the museum for the Discovering Ancient Egypt exhibition on 27 December. Clearly Christmas is not a good time to visit. The carpark was crazy and difficult to find a park with people driving like idiots to get a space. The Egyptian exhibition was reasonable at $25 adult and $20 concession. Tickets can be purchased online. The exhibition itself was beautifully presented and informative. There were just too many people crammed into the space to see everything without someone breathing down your neck or coughing on you. Even wearing a mask, I felt it was just too crowded. The line up for the mummy room took 15 mins to get in, with the line snaking through the display. You couldn't spend any time in there. The exhibition is well worth visiting for anyone interested in Egyptian history, just go at a less busy time.

A fabulous repository of Australian history, culture, and learning. There is something here to inspire and intrigue kids and grown-ups alike, and there are plenty of “Oh, I remember that!” moments to be had for adults of all ages. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and serene. Here there are toilets, BBQ and walking tracks bordered by weeping willows and Lake Burley Griffin. Times may have changed but I think the Carillon plays at 7:30am and then at 8:15am. Plenty of places to jog or just lose around taking in the scenery. You can also can walk to and from Commonwealth Park and Regatta Point.

Is situated in Aspen Island in central Canberra. Is an artificial lake, but still pretty. The carillon is in regular use, chiming every quarter-hour and playing a short tune on the hour along with tours and recitals on many days. You have good toilets and BBQ area. Beautiful green and open space.

This museum is a must on a visit to Canberra. Although parts of the museum are closed for refurbishment, we still spent over 3 hours here and we were rushing to the end, as we wanted to go to another museum. Parking is free on the weekend, but it looks like you have to pay on weekdays. The staff are so friendly and very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of Captain Cook and Joseph Banks accounts vs that of the first Australians. Really puts what you learnt in school into question... Lots to see and do. I can't wait to come back when the refurbishment is completed.

A wonderful gathering place for some of Australia’s important historical legacies and a great way to learn about the development of European history in this country and the important interaction with indigenous cultures. The indigenous galleries are particularly good and I hope they accurately reflect the wishes and aspirations of Australia’s people. The Museum misses one important part of our European history - our place in Antarctica. It ignores over 70 years of exploration, science and habitation in the most significant continent on earth. It ignores the Australian Antarctic Territory, over 42% of Antarctica and the significant contribution Australia has made to the preservation, protection and knowledge of Antarctica. Great museum; big gap.

There are some fun things to look at, particularly about Australian history such as the 1 dinosaur and old windmill. Considering its free entry, good for a fun day out. The outside landscape is beautifully designed in a modern style, however it can be hard to find your way about. Lots of walking before we found the free galleries (there are two - one about Australian history in general and one about Aboriginal peoples). They were okay but hard to find staff to help you out inside the galleries on the 29th December (they could be on holiday). There was a paid exhibition about Romans and Greeks at the time of writing which we didn't view. Also toilet was a bit neglected as seen in photograph.

Ample of free parking. General admission is free and no pre booking is required. (walk in ok). However, due to covid, except the outdoor area, all the kids area are all closed. There is a paid exhibition currently showing Greek Treasures. Plenty of staff around happy to answer your questions. Must see the Par Lap horse heart and feel the opera house tiles.

Simply awesome. Spent about 4 hours here without a tour and even then it wasn't enough. The current exhibits on first nations peoples, entwined with the climate change and environment exhibits were moving and enlightening. There's a wide variety of mediums conveying the history and information with some of it being interactive. A lot of work has been put in and it shows. Best part is that it's free! Apart from the parking. Also has a decent cafe and one of the best museum gift shops I've personally been to.

A great way for kids and adults alike, to learn so much about almost anything under the sun. It's been a remarkable experience for my family and I. We only had 45 minutes to spare so the lovely guys at the reception gave us clear instructions on what would be the best section to see, keeping the age of my elder one (9 year old) in mind. As a family, we decided that this place needs at least 4 hours if we wanted to do justice as the wealth of information is too much. We shall surely visit again.

This is a wonderful museum that caters for the whole family. From an interactive hands on kids zone to fascinating historical exhibits, this museum keeps your attention for a good few hours. There's also a large outdoor area that we enjoyed as well as a cafe and gift shop. With no entry fee it's a great attraction in the heart of Canberra.

Plenty parking, great location. Extensive collection, be prepared to walk. A huge collection of indigenous artefacts and information. A large area was under renovation so all we saw was the first nation displays really. Cafe is nice worth an outside terrace, modern and clean facilities in general. Should not miss this place, especially considering entry is free.

I've been to the major museums right across Europe and I was expecting something similar in scope in Canberra, but was bitterly disappointed. There was very little here, with wide open spaces, a single dinosaur and an old Holden. There are exhibits on whaling and climate change, but that's about it. The Melbourne museum is bigger and better. Was hoping the national museum would be a monument to the country but just comes across as second rate and an afterthought.

Amazing museum I recommend highly specially for kids they can enjoy the adventure section and if they are 7+ they ll just love the VR experience, it worths . Inside they have a restaurant with amazing view on the lake , but a little bite expensive for the small bites . So I recommend coffee or some sharing plates and enjoy the beautiful view. You need time at least 4 hours to check it all

The staff here are very nice, informative and helpful, yet the place is a bit bland in terms of things to do. I did like the exhibitions, and the artefacts were incredible, yet the information on them is a bit hard to comprehend. As well, the paid exhibitions are a bit too expensive, and it feels like you have to enter them to make a day of the place.

We attended on a week day and there was hardly anyone there. So we had plenty of space to observe the exhibits. The First Australians section was beautiful and inspiring. It was really great to see and hear the voices of those first Australians talking about their culture in video installations. I would recommend a visit to Canberra to spend time in this wonderful facility. Also there is regular public transport to and from the museum and it is accessible by bike path if you are a rider.

I go to the museum regularly, and this time I went to see the temporary exhibition Endeavour Voyage. Loved it, and definitely going back to explore further. The audiovisual displays are done really well, and giving both perspectives from both the British visitors and the inhabitants, with artefacts and words from both sides of the encounters, as Cook made his way up the coast. I loved the way they contrasted the two cultures, e.g. how Banks had sauerkraut and had to heat the biscuits to deal with the weevils while the people watching them were feasting on fresh fish etc. I enjoyed the olfactory display, guessing the smells that would have been experienced by the seamen as well. An excellent exhibition, wonderfully done, and an intelligent and respectful presentation of a previously told as one-sided story. Well done National Museum staff!

Aspen Island is man made. The carillon was designed in 1967, built during 1969 and completed in 1970. Queen Elizabeth 2, officially opened the National Carillon on 26 April 1970. 50 th Jubilee of the founding of Canberra. The tower stands 50 metres ( 160ft ) tall. The National Carillon has 57 bells, it was initially with 53 bells, and increased to 55 bells, during refurbishment in 2003-4. 2019 - 20 upgrade the carillon with a new clavier, a fully replaced transmission and additional of 2 new bells. One bell is called the Ngunnawal bell, in recognition of the first People of the Canberra Region. 2020 a upgrade on Aspen Island of the footpath, from Gravel paths to the Concrete path. On the island has a electric BBQ area and a waterbubble, to drink.

Very interesting exhibition in occasion of the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Endeavour and its crew (under James Cook). The exhibition tells the story from different points of view, mostly the Aboriginal tribes', whose lives where changed forever after the Europeans arrived in Australia.

Very nice museum, we visited the Endeavour Voyage exhibition, it's really nice and tells the history from different views, including Aboriginals. Very interesting. Will definitely come back to see the other exhibitions. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Old stuff in it's natural habitat... surrounded by people who will go and tell other people the full history about which they only read three sentences on a placard, with the gravitas of a tenured professor. Exquisite. For instance... did you know...

This is terrific public asset that we enjoyed visiting. Staff were busy with managing COVID controls but were polite, friendly and helpful. Displays were a nice balance of artful presentation combined with interesting commentary. The Captain Cook display co-presents both Explorer and Indigenous experiences, complete with the very symbolic breaking of a spear to communicate peace. The cafe is very good and worth including as part of a day out.

I managed to get a good carpark. I joined in the activities and made a bracelet using reeds. The Aboriginal instructor was great and a patient, clear and pleasant. She was very 😊.

Thorough indigenous history with great exhibition on The Endeavour and Captain Cook's "discovery" of Australia. I thought a national museum would have a wider scope of things to see and learn. Should be called the National Indigenous History Museum.

Big waste of time. It is not a 'national' museum in any sense. Huge buildings but actual artifacts are sparse. You walk in and it's just big empty spaces and a bunch of staff standing around staring at you. The war memorial had many more artifacts and was much more interesting.

Came to listen to the Djinama Yilaga Choir & from the Yuin Nation sing in Dhurga language for Reconciliation week. MAGICAL 💫💕 Didn't see any exhibitions but from past experience will need a whole day for that. So many yummies in the cafe, but had to wait in line for a long time before being served.

What a great day out! The architecture of this whole building was amazing from the moment you walked up the entrance. So much history and a couple of bonus exhibitions there at the moment which are featured which were great ( Captain Cook Endeavour Voyage Exhibition was a marvellous recollection of experiences from the First Australians and Cook) We found this old caravan and car on display as well which was amazing to just see how far the humble caravan has come over the years. “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

Visited the Ancient Greeks exhibit and loved it. Tickets purchased in advance, timed sessions kept numbers down, masks required, exhibits well labeled with some interesting stories, background and context. The exhibits themselves were a marvel - offering a glimpse into life in the distant past.

A brilliant place to dive into some of Australia's history, and it's completely free (aside from the car parking and some of the specific exhibits at the time of visiting). There were two main exhibits at our time of visiting, with an optional Ancient Greeks exhibit which you could pay for. Staff were great, and the museum had plenty of information boards to read.

Loved the Aboriginal section. Very educational and interactive. Took about 1.5hrs to go through it all. Didn't go into the Greek history section or cyber intelligence due to personal time restrictions. There wasn't really much more than that to see. Free entry into general museum was a bonus

Beautiful museum, a lot to see and to find out about Australian history. I can definitely recommend buying tickets for the connection program (event ends on 9 October), fantastic experience. Also, I would advise to avoid peak hours.

A wonderful museum full of various displays about Australia and Australian culture and its history. Also a wonderful rock display. Very easy to navigate. Car Park was full when we got there around 11am, would be nice to have another level added to car park as parking can be very difficult (knocking 1 star off for that).

The national museum is so cool, would definitely suggest going on a quite day if you can so you can take all the time you need. All of the exhibits were put together very well and have a nice flow to them, and plenty of small bits of fun to find and explore as well.

  • 5/5 Glen T. 9 months ago on Google
I was here for a corporate event hosted in one of the museum's event spaces. The facilities were fit for purpose and they provided food and drink were good quality and plentiful. Despite a false alarm triggering an impromptu evacuation the 2 day event ran flawlessly.

Great museum (probably the best we visited in Canberra) to spend a few hours. There’s a variety of exhibits showcasing everything from dinosaur skeletons to cars to Australian history. The design of the space is also really interesting—the building is set up so you almost get sucked into an area and then find yourself wandering around before you exit into a different themed room with a completely different atmosphere. We combined this visit with a trip to the National Capital Exhibition and Commonwealth Park which was a short walk or Uber away, which was nice because we then got to view the roller coaster shaped National Museum building from a distance. It’s also worth mentioning that the small but really well maintained gardens outside this museum were stunning and very educational. Definitely spend some time exploring this green space. Overall, highly recommend and a must do when visiting Canberra!

It was one of the most wholesome museums I've visited. Visitor friendly, informative, and educational. I was excited about the VR show, but those are available on the weekends and Friday. And the Muttaburrasaurus was the most captivating fossil ever!! I couldn't stop staring

Museum looks very small but so much to explore.. lots of kid’s activities, playground , cafe …. Exhibitions etc. Paid parking … free entry.. spare lots of time here .. new design architecture is something to be attracted.. would come back soon from Melbourne 😇🫶

What an absolute delight and well curated space!! This makes our local qld museum look like a country cousin with no funding support. What I would give to explore this space over many rainy weekends!!! I loved hearing so many stories from our First Nations peoples 👏🏻

Does justice to the history of Terra Australis, from pre-history, geological make up to the evolving nation it is. A decade ago, I made a brief visit & sat alone in the revolving theatre & was spooked..:). Theatre is no longer here & the space has been redeveloped. Free entry. Staff are helpful - get the map at front foyer to navigate around. Bus 53 from city centre will get you here in 15 mins. Fee payable timed parking onsite. Two areas were closed off on the day of my visit Fri 29 Sept recently. Made it easier to cover the remaining areas in 2 hours after a leisurely lunch at the on-site Cafe. In a massive museum like this, you will have to pick what interests you & not try to cover all & be fatigued. Join the free guided tours & get the most out of it - check online. Located on Lake Burley Griffin - interior has high glass features which frame the great vistas outside. Avant garde layout of this building is also worthy of attention though the central courtyard "Garden of Australian Dreams" lacked actual plant features. This vast space could be put to better use. Amenities are clean & the Atrium gift shop retails uniquely Aboriginal artwork, flora & fauna of Aust which you probably won't get elsewhere. Closes at 5pm but annoyingly- some exits were closed at 4 pm & I found I could not exit from the "Garden" area. Signage was hard to follow & lead me to another closed door. I had to walk all the way back to the main gallery- pretty disorientating as I was tired by then. Will definitely return on another visit to Canberra! 👍🏼👍🏼

I personally found the great southern section on the Bunya mountains the most interesting and spent about 80% of my time in this section, along with the exhibit on the whales and Great Barrier Reef. The “defining moments in Australian History” interactive screen was also really interesting.

  • 4/5 Jae Jung C. 4 months ago on Google
The building's exterior is unique and impressive, but the actual exhibits are not as numerous. However, there are many impressive exhibits scattered throughout, and many old exhibits that represent Australia. It is also nice to have a cup of coffee while quietly looking at the lake from the museum cafe located on the 1st floor. Parking fees are charged for cars. The museum shop located at the exit sells a variety of representative Australian items and is definitely recommended to visit.
