This is a fantastic museum where you can learn about the colonial past/inheritance of Netherlands, specifically how today’s wealth is linked with slavery from a very honest point of view, which makes the place unique globally. Really cool sections on cultural appropriation, and gift giving in different cultures and so on. I’ll come back! And definitely recommend the place.

I was very surprised by this museum. It was very interesting and huge. You can spend hours in here. The last floor exhibition wasn’t the best specially the one about plastic. But it’s a nice museum to learn more about culture and some part of the history.

A wonderful museum with interesting temporary exhibitions and a very interesting main exhibition that makes you think about colonialism and other phenomena in the world around us and our history. A lot of interesting objects and videos/audios, I spent here probably 4 hours, and I still had a shortage. In addition, there is a small but interesting shop and a nice cafe where you can have a snack while sightseeing. I started sightseeing in the morning, so despite Sunday it wasn't crowded.

Unfortunatelly this museum doesn't reached me. There was some interesting spiritual stuff, but that's it. The first floor was closed because of some maintenance. Fortunately the entry was free with Amsterdam City Card.

Interesting museum with an interesting take on colonial ancestry of the Netherlands. That was a predominant theme in the museum. Various exhibitions on many floors. The central hall is a beautiful place, although its vast emptiness feels there's something missing. Would be a good place for some huge highlights of a temporary exhibition etc. Despite visible efforts, the navigation leaves much to improve.

(Translated by Google) Nice museum but I am disappointed because it lacks reliability regarding the origin of some of the exhibits. There is a kaftan from Morocco which has always been presented this way but the museum recently added another origin (Algeria) to the garment which is fake. It would be better to correct the error because the kaftan in question is indeed Moroccan from the city of Fez. Merci

One of the very best meusum for children in the world. Good place and excellent mind blowing interiors. Historical architecture always makes our eyes pop because they seem incredible. Good for tourist purpose and good for photography purpose as well. You can get some amazing shots for your Instagram feed. Have a walk. Do visit to see something out of the box.

Very nice museum and surprisingly large. I recommend at least half a day to make the most of it. The museum has three main levels and the general recommendation is to start from above and work your way down. The exhibits are very nice and try to be inclusive of all aspects of society but there are places left for improvement. It was also nice to see quite a few people spending their Sundays there though most seemed to be tourists. Facilities are ok and keep in mind you HAVE to leave your bags in lockers. The lockers seem quite fragile hence I would recommend keeping the valuables on you in your pockets. The photography exhibition was interesting but didn't feel very inclusive. Definitely a nice place to spend a Sunday morning

Huge museum worth visiting, theme is appropriation of different nationalities and cultures, I think it is great, i truly believe that we should learn about people around the world instead of hating them or forbidding to use our culture, spreading the word, it will help authentic traditions in clothes, hairstyles and etc to live long and not be lost! you can take a break and get to the restaurant and then back to museum, i really loved Ceasar salad there and they have amazing vegeterian burger made from jackfruit which you should try! Oh and you can also buy there cool items, i personally got nice stones from there so lovely

I highly recommend visiting this beautiful museum to see the current exhibition, "Someone is getting rich". Powerful and important the exhibition is a collection of works by contemporary artists on the theme of the history of finance and it’s evolution from colonialism to the current system with the challenges facing our world today. More of a "must see" than Vermeer!

Today was a truly wonderful day for our family as we visited the Tropenmuseum. From the moment we stepped in, it was clear that this was going to be an exciting and enriching experience for all of us. The kids were immediately captivated by the vibrant exhibits and interactive displays. One of the highlights of our visit was the family tour at Sabi Suriname. It was not just a tour, but an immersive journey into the heart of Surinamese culture. The knowledgeable guide shared fascinating stories and insights, making history come alive for both young and old. Learning about the diverse traditions and heritage of Suriname was a unique and eye-opening experience for all of us. However, what truly stood out and became the highlight of our visit was the museum's restaurant. After an inspiring day of exploration, we were treated to a culinary delight that surpassed our expectations. The restaurant not only offered a delectable array of dishes but also created a warm and inviting atmosphere that allowed us to relax and relish our time together. From the mouthwatering flavors to the cozy ambiance, the restaurant provided the perfect ending to our day at the museum. It was a fantastic way to unwind and share our thoughts and impressions of the exhibits we had seen. The combination of cultural immersion, educational engagement, and delightful dining made our visit to the Tropenmuseum an unforgettable family experience that we will treasure for years to come.

What an excellent Gem of a museum! Fits in well with a trip to the Zoo and the museum of microscope matter next door. Anyway back to the Tropenmuseum. Its an open space on 2 floors in 2 wings of an old stripped back property. Clearly used to house preserved animals in glass cabinets which in places it still does but all rearranged with thought provoking maps and charts and screens and interactive stuff. It has a smell sensory tunnel, A seat you sit in whilst it maps your face whilst bombarding you with pictures of animals emotions.. All sorts of fun things that you cant really explain in a review. But I will try, I would describe it as a place to go and think, be informed and entertained but most of all helped to think and change the way you think, yes that is how I would describe it. A rewiring of your brain pathways. Its not banging on the same old topics of climate or identity crisis, although of course this is included and it cares a lot for all of humanities enclaves, but its more about the way to think about yourself in a context of stories and facts about the earth through history. How to think about things in a different way. See!! Impossible to describe but its worth a go. There is also a soundscape that changes all the time and is intermitent. The video is a rain scene but it could be a passing train or some human noise. Great Museum, really enjoyed it

Interesting museum, even for me, an American. Colonialism was honestly presented to museum goers. It was a challenge to learn about the ways the Dutch colonized parts of the world, especially the their contributions to enslaving people.

The museum is quite impressive, and the exhibits that were there when I visited were so interesting. The museum does a good job taking accountability for the past colonial sins of the Netherlands and acknowledges the history of the country’s involvement in Indonesia and Suriname. There are plenty of cultural pieces from these former colonies as well as interesting temporary exhibitions.

Tropenmuseum: This museum contains artifact mostly from Dutch colonies. Since Indonesia was a Dutch colony they got lot of artifact from there like artifact related to Hinduism (lord Ganesha , dagger showing Ramayan event, Lord shiva , Shivalinga, and many other artifacts. They also had many artifacts from Papua New Guinea like big wodden face mask, wodden canoes with lot of stories around their beliefs. If you are interested in all these it's worth visiting.

Nice museum but unfortunately, as some people said in the comments, there is some misinformation especially concerning a Moroccan Caftan/Kaftan from Fez which is exposed as wrongly being of both moroccan and algerian origin, which is not true. This Caftan/Kaftan is exclusively Moroccan. Algeria does not have Caftan, it has the "Karakou" inherited from the Ottomans

Respect the culture and history of Morocco thank you. I visited the museum and I must say it was a good experience. But I saw a caftan coming clearly from Morocco presented as Algerian (Tlemcen) It's disrespectful towards the Moroccan craftsmanship and Moroccan dressmakers who are using and perpetuating hundreds of years of tradition . Plus assimilating all of north Africans countries was a strategy used by the occupying country , France , to force the idea that all of these countries were the same . When it's known by historians that morocco has its own history and caftan is part of it .

It’s not your typical museum. It is supposed to be a guide for western countries about history of non-western countries and their culture. But it’s far from it, the artifacts on display are only for few regions of African/Asian countries. Also a big part of museum was closed for maintenance. However the architecture is mesmerizing. Overall, you should visit this museum if it’s included in museum card/I Amsterdam card but I wouldn’t recommend paying for separate tickets for this one.

Several expositions on intercultural topics and modern views on colonialism. We liked that it was not overcrowded, the exhibits were presented in an aesthetically pleasing which helps to mantain your focus. The floors are round a quadrangle where you can look down to the ground floor. This makes it easy to keep track with the expositions and not miss exhibits.

The building is beautiful, but apparently from that the entire museum is chaotic in terms of presentation, it is hard to follow a storyline and understand it, looks more like an art gallery style. The museum had a zone undertaking works at the time maybe it will change In the future Besides all that is very biased on opinions in the descriptions and interpretations losing what I believe to be historical/pragmatic view. It dies have a section with a nice interaction workshop with kids but not worth the visit. I will check again in a couple of years. For now ..not recommend it

Visiting the Tropenmuseum was an unforgettable experience that left me in awe of the rich tapestry of cultures and histories that make up our world. From the moment I stepped through its doors, I was transported on a journey through time and space. The highlight of my visit was the captivating Chinese New Year show, which brought to life the vibrant traditions and customs of this ancient celebration. As I wandered through the museum's halls, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail in the photos and documents that chronicled the history of various cultures. Each exhibit was a testament to the dedication and passion of the curators, who had painstakingly curated a collection that was both educational and inspiring. One of the most memorable moments of my visit was when I stumbled upon a section dedicated to the history of Chinese immigrants in the Netherlands. Through photographs, artifacts, and personal stories, I gained a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of this community, which has played such an integral role in shaping Dutch society. Overall, my experience at the Tropenmuseum was nothing short of magical. It was a journey of discovery and enlightenment that left me with a newfound appreciation for the diversity and richness of our world. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the human experience.

Included with the Museum Kaart, This is one of those museums you don't know what to expect and then you are happily surprised by the contents. Sort of an Anthropology museum, but not the classical ones with shrunken heads (they may have them), more of up to date changing exhibits that are good for general knowledge and conversation. Also a great museum for the little ones. They have lots of interactive parts and special activities for them. Check their calendar.

Good collection but the signage is overly woke and hectoring. The items themselves are primarily from Indonesia and Micronesia. If you are seeking a wider overview of world cultures then the Volkenkunde museum in Leiden is a better bet.

I only had time to do the exhibit on the ground floor and the Troppen Junior. Troppen Junior was magical (except the music workshop facilitator needs to get better at working with her junior audience). The Things That Matter exhibition was a really well presented show with cubes on topics that are relevant to the world today. I think it had just the perfect amount of information to keep my attention and got me to formulate important questions in my head about culture, life and relations.

Beautiful museum about foreign cultures, historical topics like colonial times, slavery and a collection of sculptures from all around the world. They also have expositions about current topics, right now they have a temporary one about gender and one about Bali. They show how Europe (mostly the Netherlands) was involved but also what customs there are and the culture in Bali right now and how tourism is involved. They had a live dance show with dance workshop for adults and children. The temporary expositions change every couple months. We spend about 2,5 hours here, could spend longer but with 3 floors it's not to big. Kid friendly and very modern. Also very interactive with short video documentary's, and 'games'. Makes you think about how you view things in society and different cultures. Would recommend.

Jammer!

(Translated by Google) A museum less known than its big brothers Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum, but still worth the visit. The collections are surprising (sorry, I can't find any other term more precise): the culture of the various countries which may have been colonized by the Netherlands is presented in a ... surprising angle. On the other hand, the architecture of the museum is su ... blime. The collections are present on both floors: they are presented along corridors that go around the building, leaving a view of the huge room in the center of the museum. My advice: once your tickets have been purchased, go directly to the second floor by the elevator. This is a piece of advice given to us by the person in charge of the reception, and starting the museum from the top allows us to capture the architectural splendor of the building. Worth a look!

We were so exited to see the gender exposition in one of our favourite museums. Rather sad that almost all gender non conforming people were assigned male at birth. The only assigned female at birth were stil identifying as female, just pushing the boundaries on femaleness. On a separate note: I am impressed how much this museum has changed in the last decades and is clear about it's and general colonial past.

Beautiful building that unfortunately tops the exhibition, which relies heavily on texts to explain, well, everything. Bonus points for bilingual texts and some gorgeous pieces on display. It's slightly jarring that while the texts repeatedly go to great lengths to highlight the difficult history of colonialism it's called the "Tropics museum", which would suggest some sort of nature-focused as opposed to ethnographic exhibition.

Visited for the "what a genderful world" exhibition. The exhibition itself felt very disjointed: while it asked the right questions, it felt like an excuse just to display some of the exhibits that don't normally go on show very often; and the lighting in the cabinets wasn't always so good for reading about the contents.

Presents culture in a unique way. Religion, costumes and gifts amomg others... What they look like, what they mean across the world. Its an engaging collection with pieces from many places about topics you would not see in many museums.

Disappointing. Came back here after several years, having remembered the place to tell a fascinating story about the netherlands colonial past. This is all gone. Be aware half the museum is closed done (what noone tells you - the whole 1st floor looks like the foto), and on the 2nd floor there are two special exhibitons, which I couldn't relate to and which totally lacked any red thread. Sadly, a waste of time (and 26€ entrance fee).

  • 1/5 Ken L. 1 year ago on Google
Very disappointing experience. The museum shows a bunch of photos from various counties around the world and some trivial content such as how people do gifts in different cultures. It’s good to have a balanced view on the colonial past but completely eliminating the story and artificers of the colonial past seems to be a bridge to far. The whole experience felt very woke and the visit felt like a waste of time and money.

Great architecture, and the expositions were nicely curated. There are also activities to do as a family with children, that makes this a very complete museum. So far, the only museum in Amsterdam that goes deep into their slavery history as a major colonizing nation in the past.

Excellent museum of cultural history. A lot of interesting information and facts about the colonization times. The "Plastic Crush" exhibition is especially a big bonus plus. Shocking and surprising. The whole museum is strongly recommended to visit. It has a high influence of understanding cultures, diversity and respect of each other. It is a must to see...

Okay - so it's called Tropenmuseum in guidebooks, and if you don't see an entrance, it's around the corner. It's yet another well restored building with a modernized interior in Amsterdam! The permanent exhibition on the legacy of colonialism was superb , and certainly worth the time...other countries with a colonial past could learn from the way the information was presented. The temporary shows were interesting as well. Not least, the quality and design ideas behind the way the exhibits were displayed were modern and well executed.

  • 5/5 Tomekia R. 6 months ago on Google
WOW! The Exhibit on getting rich was wonderfully done. I also enjoyed learning about colonization and well as pilfering and then the music room. So much to enjoy. Be sure to walk over to the slave monument in Oosterpark while you let the art soak in.
