A fantastic Museum and war memorial. Would highly recommend attending if you are visiting Canberra. It is free to the public but you do need to go onto the website a book a time due to covid restrictions.

Great place to visit!! Highly recommended!!! A wonderful place to visit. Draws out the raw emotions from everyone, be them very high to very low. Give yourself plenty of time to visit it all, so much history and personal stories to read and experience. Then, to cap off the day, appreciate the calling of the Last Post. A truly memorable visit with many more to come once the construction and refurbishments are complete. Stunning display of Australian war memorabilia and homage to the living and lost veterans of war. Freedom isn't free for any country and this memorial takes you straight to that fact. It's a free tour but you have to schedule a time online. They also have free guided tours.

A must for those into WW1 and WW2. Lots of historical items are displayed, and you can relate to what you have read in the books. You have a choice to follow the guided tour or go on your own. If you're more into taking photos, better go on your own. Do get the ticket in advance via online (ticket is free), which allow you to choose the time to visit the war memorial.

I have to put 5 star. The memorial is amazing with fascinating stories. They have real artefacts from Second World War and First World War. Real size planes, canon, car, weapons ect… The view from the unknown soldier tomb is amazing. You can see the parliaments on the other side

Make sure you book free tickets in advance. Tickets are good for a 2 hour visit but you can get sequential tickets in a day if you’re going to be longer. The front desk also offered to extend for me when I said I was going to sign up for a free tour. Tour was excellent.

One of the best war memorials in the world. Not to be missed if you're in Canberra. Beginning from first world war, continues through the second and all the latest wars are added. Try to attend the closing ceremony during dusk. Lest we forget.

One of the most stunning and striking places in all of Australia, the feeling are overwhelmingly sad but great to see the tribute and remembering those that sacrifice their lives for us from the ANZACS to the allies, nurses and anyone that fought in the war for Australia and New Zealand. The information and displays are incredible and intensely detailed, well preserved war artefacts and items belonging to all sides of the conflict and representing all the different divisions of war, the designs and layout is so well illustrated and easy to navigate for any ages and physical abilities. Plenty of helpful and friendly staff to assist you, group tours are free, the iconic poppy on the plaques for the fallen are must do and something from yourself to contribute and be apart of the memorial. I’ve already said a lot about this place, it’s a must visit at least once in your life time either you’re an Aussie/Kiwi or visiting the area, it’s FREE ENTRY and the views from the memorial are breathtaking looking onto Anzac Parade and Australian Parliament House (new and old), you can easily walk there and bus there, parking is available onsite and enjoy a relaxing coffee at their cafe with a whole lot of interesting information surrounding it. This place is literally for anyone absolutely no excuses not to visit doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 88 years old!

Visiting the Australian War Memorial was a truly touching experience. I highly recommend everyone to stop by. The free entry is a bonus, and there's so much to see. Make sure to allow plenty of time; it's worth every moment. A poignant tribute and a must-visit. Five stars without a doubt.

Mr O attended this fine establishment on a beautiful summer's day in Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory, the true heart of a great nation. This was the second visit to the War Memorial, for Mr O, and, just as the first visit, it was again a truly memorable experience. The customer service was excellent, the staff were friendly and passionate about their roles, and the displays were highly informative and professionally presented. Mr O would recommend a visit to the War Memorial to anyone who visits the Nation's Capital for business or pleasure.

One of the best places to visit in Canberra, especially for young ones that are interested in military vehicles. Make sure you ask where to park if you want to go around and see the large outdoor vehicles as they are not part of the main exhibit. Still free to access, but it's a lot easier if you drive around the back and park.

An amazing place of national significance. Made all that much better by taking a tour. A balanced view of losses and warfare within our borders would be a significant improvement. As would ensuring the Board has no political appointments. Years ago I thought the dioramas were old hat but my appreciation has grown. Perhaps visiting the actual sites has helped.

Undergoing huge upgrade, but still able to put on a really moving and informative exhibition. An excellent learning experience. Love how they tell the story as it is and allowed my emotions to draw from the facts. I brought guests from Melbourne and South Africa and they were very moved and impressed, especially the Last Post. We did ask the memorials to Anzac Parade too, well worth it.

The Australian War Memorial is Australia's national memorial to the members of its armed forces and supporting organizations who have died or participated in wars involving the Commonwealth of Australia, and some conflicts involving personnel from the Australian colonies prior to Federation. The memorial includes an extensive national military museum. The Australian War Memorial was opened in 1941, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant memorials of its type in the world. The Memorial is located in Australia's capital, Canberra, in the suburb of Campbell. The Australian War Memorial forms the north terminus of the city's ceremonial land axis, which stretches from Parliament House on Capital Hill along a line passing through the summit of the cone-shaped Mount Ainslie to the northeast. No continuous roadway links the two points, but there is a clear line of sight from the front balcony of Parliament House to the War Memorial, and from the front steps of the War Memorial back to Parliament House.(Wiki..)

There is clearly a lot of respect and care for the legacy amongst the staff at the AWM, and they are very helpful. The displays are excellent, and we enjoyed the solemn Last Post ceremony. It's free (I would happily have paid), but at this point in time you need to book due to Covid restrictions.

A place for serious history lesson. Hope every soul who defended their country rest in peace. Every soul who defended the peace O mankind should be remembered forever. I saw a letter of solder written.to his mom from the prison he was arrested, I saw many items belonging to bloody war, I saw an Australian war history for over 100 years in this place. I saw many handsome faces who given their life to this country. Australia in peace and prosperity because of them, Australians living happily because of them. May God bless Australia! May God bless those people.who love and defend their peaceful life. May God protect the peace of mankind and our planet.

Amazing and sobering place. The artifacts from conflict are amazingly kept, with stories and tales and descriptions to go with them all. Emotionally takes it toll on you after a while but it's an amazing place. Would love to get back there and spend a few days reading everything.

We were even asked to lay a wreath for the last post ceremony that was very emotional and meant the world to us and I take my hat off to .all involved in making this place such a beautiful memory to all our service men and women.Staff are so helpful and give you the feeling as you too belong there sharing the soldiers story.

Something every Australian should see, and take their children to see. It should be compulsary, stuff in there will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. It is impossible to walk thru this building and not be moved in some way. It is an amazing and timeless tribute to our fallen. Go and see it.

One of the most powerful (read melancholic) places I’ve ever visited! The memorial pays rich tribute to the soldiers who fought for Australia and also has some glimpses of what a day in a soldier’s life is like. We visited as a family, and we were silently observing a lifetime of service! An absolutely must visit in Canberra

The War Memorial is a great way to remember the fallen and learn about the wars Australia was in. WWI, WWII, Vietnam war, Korean war and many more are included. There are countless artifacts and bits of information which tell visitors about Australia's part in the wars mentioned above. Unfortunately when I visited it was under renovation, although when it is done I will come again and see all the War Memorial has to offer.

The Australian War Memorial was a place to reflect upon all the sacrifices our war hero's went through. It is an AMAZING Memorial and I was deeply touched. It is a place which is tastefully made and a real education for all Australians and alike. Truly mind blowing, how many men and women gave up their lives for us all.

Every Australian and person who visits the ACT needs to visit this place...the stories told within this monument are hard to understand for those who were never there. I'm not sure how the modern generation will ever understand the sacrifice that was made. We stayed for the last post ceremony which is held daily and has the story of 1 soldier told in detail which was great to hear hit in main area with the pool of reflection and eternal flame. Worth every cent to visit.👌

Simply an amazing. It's undergoing some massive works for the next couple of years, which will make it so much better. We all loved it. It's a very emotional place to visit. Every Australian should visit this at least once to appreciate what our diggers have gone through & to see the history of our armed forces.

Enjoyed a lovely few hours visiting the Australian War Museum. Some renovations going on inside and out but plenty of parking underneath and well signed. Displays were outstanding, it has been decades since I visited here and it was well worth the visit. Recommended if you have a few hours to spare in Canberra. Make sure you book online before arriving.

A place worth visiting for international visitors when coming to Canberra city. The surrounding area is under repair but does not affect the exhibition area. The time allowed to visit is about 1 hour which seems too little given the quality and rich content here.

Great as usual but currently being enlarged so a lot of construction work going on. The guide said that at present only about 5% of their collection is on display so they desperately needed more space. Should be well worth the wait.

It was one of the best experiences I have had in a very long time. Visiting a place that tells us all that our war veterans and heroes have been through done for us to be safe. And the icing on the cake for me was being a part of the Last Post. The staff were so pleasant to talk to and always ready to assist us with their beautiful smiles, about any questions we had. If you plan a trip to Canberra it is definitely one place to visit.

A remarkable experience for our family. We were all very impressed with the quality of the memorabilia displays and detailed interpretations. The ‘Last Post’ was tremendously moving and respectful. The surrounding gardens are beautifully kept and peaceful. The only criticism is that the cafe closes at 3pm. Considering the good amount of people there during the afternoon who were staying for the ‘Last Post’ it would have been nice to have had refreshments available until 4pm at least. We can highly recommend this ‘must see’ whilst in Canberra.

A lot of effort has been put into the memorial and it shows. I will definitely visit this place again in the future and recommend anyone who has the opportunity to do so themselves. This was a free exhibition as well with the option of a donation at the end.

Absolutely brilliant but a day is not enough if you are interested in war time stuff. You really need 2 days. I started with the first world war but didn't really finish it and barely touched the second world and didn't even get to Vietnam or Korea. My advice go to the website and get your ticket they are free but they only allow a certain number of people in because of COVID. Get one for each time slot and don't forget the last post one at the end of the day. It's worth going just for that.

The war memorial is an exceptional place to visit. Very moving and to see the workmanship that has gone into all the displays is amazing. The tour guides are all so very knowledgeable.

Pleasantly surprised. Wasn't really our first pick of something to do in Canberra, and really only went to be "tourists" but I wish we had left ourselves with more time to look around. The exhibits are beautifully displayed. The Team that look after this place deserve a round of applause. A few museums and art galleries could take good notes from this place.

What at first appears to be a limited memorial for all of the unnamed soldiers, was quickly turned into a 2-3 hour tour (insert Gilligan's Island theme song here) with 3-senses (light and sound and wind or vibration) shows for various stories litered throughout the various halls. It was very impressive! It was so impressive that I totally forgot to take photos, and was absorbed by the (often very sad) material.

It is the 2nd time we have been here in about 12 yrs and it has changed. It is very well displayed and explanatory, but the lighting was a bit dull. Couldn't read somethings as either small or a bit dark. There was more items on display last time, a bit much reading this time. I know it all getting renovated at the moment, good otherwise.

I found it incredible, I really felt in the war, the music and ambient sounds make you feel chills. I loved the museum, very complete and its great details, the royal-sized monkeys make an impression. First time I enter such a complete museum. Thanks.

Easily the best war memorial and war-related museum I have ever been to! The detail, the diorama displays and the sheer amount of information and displays is phenomenal. It's very respectful and the commemorative garden displays the names of fallen Australian soldiers and service people across all wars fought. The audio headphone self-guided tour for just $10 is definitely worth it, too. Absolutely essential to visit this beautifully presented and respectful memorial whilst you're in Canberra.

Australian War Memorial - an Australian monument-museum whose main task is to remind contemporary Australians of the achievements of their armed forces in the wars fought with the participation of the Australian Union. The main part of the building is occupied by the military museum. Great palce for visit, ticket free. Good lesson of history

Awesome experience and a must see if in Canberra. Could have easily spent the session touring just one of the exhibits and came back again another day. Great history lesson.

Massive place! Easy to get lost, really need a couple of days in here to see it all. We had a guided tour and our tour guide was a wonderful guy and very knowledgeable and friendly, was more than happy to take me back to the shrine of the unknown soldier and the hall of remembrance as I was late arriving and missed the start of the tour. There were a lot of building works going on when we visited unfortunately so the lift for my partner was out of service as she was in a wheelchair while we were visiting, they did have a mechanical stair crawler for wheelchairs but was very slow. Would love to come back and spend more time next time

You get a real sense of our nation here. I haven't been here since I was a child and wished I'd come sooner. If you think you may be able to visit, then you should it's worth while. There is a last post ceremony at 4:45pm that is also worth catching.

In awe of the preservation of war time Artifacts and the knowledgeable staff. School tour was informative, but not long enough or didn't have time to freely wander. So many students wanted to keep looking and reading!! A beautiful memorial nonetheless. So grateful that we have something like this to remember our veterans.

Stunning display of Australian war memorabilia and homage to the living and lost veterans of war. Freedom isn't free for any country and this memorial takes you straight to that fact. It's a free tour but you have to schedule a time online. They also have free guided tours. I would plan on 2 hours for this walkthrough but you can skim my most information in 1 to 1.5 hrs.

A beautiful memorial and museum that is comprehensive in it's story telling and remembrance of those that died for Australia. Also has great views over the city.

Absolutely wonderful place. So much war history. I've always found the War Memorial a very moving experience and it helps you to learn about all of the conflicts our Aussies have been in and the sacrifice that they made for us. We will remember them always.

A wonderful place to visit. Draws out the raw emotions from everyone, be them very high to very low. Give yourself plenty of time to visit it all, so much history and personal stories to read and experience. Then, to cap off the day, appreciate the calling of the Last Post. A truly memorable visit with many more to come once the construction and refurbishments are complete

A must for all Australians. Full of history and some amazing pieces. Some of the storytelling techniques used are very hard hitting and really get across the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces. I especially liked the exhibit around the dam busters and the bouncing bombs.

Although heart-wrenching, it being full of history, overall the place is very scenic and calm. The staff are very helpful and accommodating, even the ones in the cafe. Hopefully construction finishes soon so people can enjoy the place more.
