Well worth a trip. Difficult to find if you are not looking out for the signpost to the Funicular once on the road up to the church. Only one signpost from the main road. The Funicular at Bom Jesus is an amazing piece of engineering-There are two tracks and carriages. There is a large tank under each carriage which is filled with water at the top and when it is released, gravity takes it down the track while at the same time pulling the second carriage up! The tank was emptied completely at the bottom and (I think) water pumped back to the top to start process again. Completed in 1882. - Such inventivenesses

This is one of the most beautifully preserved parks. A tram ride up is also an unique experience. And the view towards the city from top is also amazing! Loved being there :) highest recommendations.

If you want to have fun in a very old transportation this is the place. When you arrive to the top just admire how it operates (with water on it- hydraulic lift). You pay 1.50 just to go up and +1 if you want to come back using it. Otherwise, as we did just come walking thru the stairs. we arrived at 11 am and almost not cue, we got back to the same place to leave at 4 pm and it was very crowded You have some options of restaurants in the top of the hill To come here just search for bus number 2 from downtown. Super easy. Pay 1.60 euros per person. You need to use cash. Have fun!

My review is not of the actual funicular because I did not have the opportunity to ride it. Rather it is of the employee that was present at the time I arrived. As you can see from the photo attached the funicular in winter time runs until 12:55 p.m. I arrived at 12:29 p.m. therefore leaving just over 30 minutes until the morning sessions of the funicular ended. However, the funicular driver decided that he wanted to take his lunch early and lied saying that the last morning ride was over and to come back for the afternoon. I wonder if his employers are aware that he is stealing their time by not working a full shift. I'm quite sure the actual funicular ride is enjoyable but I wouldn't know as I was on a tight time schedule and was not able to wait to take it in the afternoon. Extremely disappointed and disgusted with the utter and complete lack of customer service and not doing one's job.

I do hesitate with the rating as it was like 2 euro for 2 minutes so doesn't sound like a good value for money. But it is indeed quite unique in terms of antique mechanism and looks cute:) Also helpful for people who'd struggle to climb 550 steps, although for reasonably fit person it's around 15 minutes and it's nice to walk! The park, gardens and views are beautiful. Unfortunately the information was scarce and the operator didn't speak English. I'm not entitled but it would help if some more info was available.

This funicular moves with water and the mechanism is visible for everybody. The journey is quite funny and if you have the chance to go in the front "sits" where you stand it can be even more exciting. For 2€ you can go up and down. For 1,20€ you just can do one way. But it's worth it either way. It's fast and beautiful.

Don't miss the opportunity to ride the first Iberian peninsula funicular and the oldest (in operation) that uses a water counterweight system. In operation since 1882.

Simply spectacular! Getting there from the train station was easy. So worth the effort.

Very convenient: this tells it all. Right next to the bus stop bringing you there. Saves time and legwork up the hill. That's the only tangible benefit. Enjoy your ride! Hope this helps.

Beautiful place, lots of walk and plenty of stairs, be prepared for good walking shoes.

2.50 euro return, 1.5 one way. Short ride with a clever system of weight with water. Rides at .25 and .55 every hour both ways

This is a less tiring way to reach Bom Jesus than the hundreds of steps (or you could cheat and use the vehicular route). Old technology at its best two cars counter-balanced by the water tanks in their bases. For the best photos I recommend the standing platform on the front when ascending. Very quick turnaround so you will be unlucky if you have a long wait. Super inexpensive. I loved it.

We cannot provide a review of the trip as we couldn’t ge on it. Unfortunately, they only accept cash and we did not have enough to enjoy a trip on it. You can choose between taking a round trip ticket or a single ride. I would recommend to go through the stairs at least on one direction as they have their own beauty.

It's a 3 minutes ride, not 10. The frequency of the carts varies with the amount of tourist visiting that day
