Wonderful chapel-hermitage, quite well preserved as a whole and the interior full of horseshoe arches, a pleasure for the eyes, very original like all the Visigothic constructions in the Iberian Peninsula. Built in the year 660, that is, the 7th century. Mr. Manuel kindly opened the church for us to visit and explained various aspects related to the building.

Historic chapel, perhaps the oldest in Portugal. It is said that it was ordered to be erected in the year 660 by Bishop São Frutuoso, still in the Visigothic Era, when the entire Iberian territory was a single kingdom. The structure preserves pre-Romanesque architectural elements with arches and other decorations, having suffered the wear and tear of time and successive interventions. Nearby there is a small medieval path.

Very unique and authentic chapel, completely in Visie-Gothic architectural styles, with many horseshoe arches. One of the few remaining buildings from the 7th century. Not much from the outside, entrance via church. Top.

De grande interesse histórico sendo uma das mais antigas de Braga onde teria estado e passado S. Frutuoso entre outros! Mesmo ao lado do antigo convento de S. Francisco que vai agora ser restaurado. Vale a pena visitar. Fica adjacente à igreja paroquial de Real; S. Francisco.

An impressive monument for its history and architecture, especially from the outside, which is exactly where we could not visit it, only from a distance from a patio of the church itself to which it is attached. Inside it is little or poorly restored. It is unacceptable that such an important monument should be kept like this. We switched the phones to calls and they didn't answer us, except once when the priest picked up to tell us to call Manuel. It is very likely that if you go during the stipulated hours it will not be open, and it seems that if you call with a foreign number they will not pick you up. Thanks to some guys from Porto who came and called from their phone, the man came. Everything was a bit surreal, but in the end we managed to see it, which was very worth it.

Such interesting historical place! The oldest Christian chapel (from 7th century) in Portugal is hidden next to main church. Place without tourist, we were here almost alone. I appreciate free toalets, it was wery welcome far in outskirt of Braga.

This is a wonderful church on the outskirts of Braga. As opposed to Bom Jesus, there was no one around when I visited and it seemed like I walked through a housing estate to get there. I would advise you to follow the road signs to the place rather than use Google Maps. The Capela de São Frutuoso is also known as the Capela de São Frutuoso de Montélios and is a pre-Romanesque chapel that was originally built by the Visigoths.

São Frutuoso chapel, in Braga, the oldest church in Portugal retaining its original structure. It was built by St Frutuoso, Bishop of Braga, in the latter half of the 7th century as the church of São Salvador de Montélios, and remained relatively unchanged through the centuries. It was incorporated into the 17th century convent of São Francisco as a chapel connected to the main church. It's a tiny church on the Greek cross pattern with an interior dome. It bears a resemblance to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna and may have been intended as the tomb of St Frutuoso.

As an FYI..the Google open/closed times are not always accurate. Visiting Tuesday, November 14 aroybd 14:30 wasn't possible. Suggest contacting the church staff prior to visiting to confirm that they're open. (Had to add star to post comment...went middle of the road)

I have been trying to visit this chapel for a long time. I finally got it. I recommend it, it's a beautiful space. All thanks to Mr. Carvalho's kindness. Since Mr. Manuel was far away. I just didn't visit the convent space because it was under construction. I hope that when they are finished, I will return to review and complete my visit. Thank you for everything and I recommend it to everyone. It is the best preserved Visigoth chapel in Portugal. It's a shame that S.Frutuoso's relics aren't all there. I hope they insist on Compostela to bring the rest that belongs there. Henry/Mabi
