The
old
collegiate
church
of
St.
Denijs,
dedicated
to
Dionysius
of
Paris,
was
founded
in
987,
through
the
actions
of
Prince-Bishop
Notger.
The
church
was
part
of
the
first
city
wall
and
the
heavy
tower,
which
was
an
ideal
lookout
post,
was
part
of
the
city
defense.
The
nave
of
the
church
dates
from
1012
-
1015,
making
it
the
oldest
in
Liège.
The
Romanesque
choir
was
built
in
the
early
15th
century
century
by
the
current
Gothic
choir.
At
the
end
of
the
17th
century,
the
church
interior
was
transformed
in
the
style
of
the
then
prevailing
Baroque
style.
In
1797
part
of
the
church
treasure
was
lost.
In
1801
it
was
reopened
as
a
parish
church.
The
church
contains
"the
Retable
de
la
Passion"
-
the
retable
of
the
Passion
of
Christ,
a
masterpiece
of
wood
carving
from
the
16th
century.
The
entrance
to
the
Sint-Denijskerk
is
a
Gate
of
Mercy.
