Best and worst hike we did! The walk to the end of the valley is really nice, feels safe and has some great views. Just before you cross the river there are some steep steps that take you up to Levada Nova and the waterfall you see in the pictures. This is amazing and going through the tunnel by the waterfall is one of the coolest things to do/see in Madeira. But the walk back along Levada Nova is terrible if you don't like heights, and still pretty terrifying if you do. It's sheer drops to the valley floor with very few railings and often wet and slippery sections. Needs some serious safety measures put in so people can look up and actually enjoy the view!

Very nice levadas and not crowded at all. The Levada do Moinho starts near the church, where is also a parking lot. Near the end of do Moinho there are stairs that you can use to go back via Levada Nova which leads above Moinho and has very nice views, waterfall that you can go through and a tunnel. You can go a little bit further behind the stairs to get to one more waterfall, next to it are tables with benches. You can then either cross the river (it's a bit tricky, a lot of large rocks fallen there that you have to climb across) or you can go back to use the stairs to go up to Nova. Overall very nice walk, but not for people who are afraid of heights, especially Nova has mostly no rails, either they were broken by fallen rocks or they weren't put there in the first place, so watch your step.

Fantastic hike on two flat levels (with a steep stair joining them at the end), with a waterfall and a tunnel. Not for those afraid of heights, though: while the higher level offers amazing views, it's often unprotected, leaving you dizzy in front of the void.

Ok so please read this if you are interested in walking this route. Please bear it mind that it is 4.5km walk to the waterfall and 4.5km back which taken us around 3 hours to do! The sat nav will take to the church, park there and that’s the start of the walk. Follow the water canal (levada) uphill for an hour and a half until you reach the waterfall. You can do the walk in trainer but I do recommend walking boots as there are a lot of rocks on the ground also walking boot will prevent your ankle from spraining which would be a nightmare specially around this area. Take lots of water and snack. There a picknic area at the end of the walk where you can enjoy a nice sit down before walking back. Take a first aid kit too just in case ! Let me know how you get on and hope this review helps!, as always thanks for reading. Thank you for reading 👍

Really nice hike with a waterfall and cool tunnel along the way and as usual on madeira incredible views. It has lots of shade and some wind due to the height so its also not too hot to walk it. It’s 9km all the way but not too exhausting with the easy concrete path. Definitely worth a visit!

Best hike we did in Madeira. Essential information: 2-3 hours Starting point: behind the church 20 car parking places Very easy to walk, not steep, don’t forget to take some lights with you because you need to go through a tunnel

Easy hike, under 10km, mostly guarded with rails. Most people find it difficult to find the beginning of the hike, which is behind the church and up the stairs and turn left and you are on the trail. Great picnic spot at the end with concrete table and chairs and barbecue facilities with a view of the waterfall.

Levada do Moinho + Levada Nova is awesome! It had beautiful views, it was not crowded and it was basically flat, therefore, very easy (not more than 3hours even if you are very slow). I was a bit worried when people wrote about the exposed sections and broken railing, but it was absolutely alright! And only if you are VERY scared of heights then I would recommend doing the lower levada there and also back - it was not exposed as the upper one and had railing in most places where needed. We started the hike around 10 and the lower levada was basically empty, we met the first people by the stairs, which lead to the upper levada and the waterfall. Aside these stairs, the trail is very flat, but might be slippery, so do not underestimate this and do not hike in slippers as some. The place started to get busier around the waterfall, where people stop to take pictures, but there is not too much space for any resting, therefore, it is better to do it before you climb the stairs. I would recommend doing firstly the lower and then upper levada in order to skip the climb up the road from the parking by the church. The parking in general is not too big, but people were parking on the side of the road so there should not be an issue with finding a place.

I highly recommend this easy trip. I found it better to other levada tours, as this is more open to valley and you can enjoy the view. We went from Ponta de Sol and started the "lower level" levada do Moinho and returned back by Levada Nova, which is approx 100 metres above the Moinho levada. There is very nice waterfall in the middle.

Really easy trial to pass, ending with beautiful waterfall. Strongly recommended to go back using levada nova, a little bit more challenging, including going through the tunnel and undergoing waterfall. Astonishing view while passing the trial, 9km, 4 hours needed

Steep walk to the starting point, limited car parking but there is some outside the cathedrals if you come early enough. There are a number of small cafes for a drink and restrooms too on the way there or back. There is a set of stairs around the cathedral where the walk starts. Half way into your walk (1h30m) You can cross over to the levada de nova so that it's a circular walk. Trainers are sufficient I feel rather than proper walking boots. On the walk, you'll come across a waterfall which is stunning. The walk back had some very exposed paths without any protections on the sides, but the views were worth it. There's also a long dark tunnel, but your phone torch will be sufficient. Rating vertical 3.

Lovely walk with great views, fairly flat with the exception of a couple of flights of steps leading up to Levada Nova and water fall over the path. We returned via Levada Nova which was a bit hairy in parts if your not used to narrow paths with no rails next to long drops.

Amazing, simple but beautiful levada walk. Started with the moinho route along caminho das pedras street. Definitely recommend. Be careful with small children as the guardrails are sometimes missing. Did it running 8km in just over an hour and 122m ascent.

It’s really spectacular path - first you go levada do moinho at the end there are steps to connect to Levada Nova and go back to ponta do sol. In fact Nova is the Best of these two. Views are like turist agency clip - you can make thiusand photos or 2h movie all long it. Fantastic trip - not difficult, bit risky but acceptable

It starts behind the church. It's a narrow but more or less flat way. Easy. The last bit to the waterfall was up stairs. We turned around at this point. Walking one way takes roughly 1 hour +

As Levada’s come, this is a nice one, and great for beginners or an afternoon hike, because it is easily accessible, and completely flat. The end is a tiny bit a let-down, as the trail turns away from the levada onto a parking lot with view of a waterfall, and lots of people just drive there… takes the felt accomplishment of the hike a bit away. There are some short stretches with no handrail, but it’s never difficult or dangerous. You should consider combining it with the nearby Levada Novo, to form a great loop trail.

Moderately easy hike along the levada with some beautiful views. The trail is uneven in many places and there are some sections without guardrails that felt a little perilous. Very easy to stay on the trail as it follows the levada. There is a nice waterfall with a seating area near the end. When you approach the end of the trail there is a staircase - you can go up that to take another trail (Levada Nova) to make a full loop. We opted to do the out-and-back along Levada Moinho as we didn't have the best footwear. We were done in about 2.5 hours.

Onr of the best levada hike. For some might be too easy. It's not on PR hikes list, which is a big advantage as for this reason I guess, there are a lot less people. I recommend to get back via levada Nova.

CAUTION: we went after storm ‘Oscar’ and the trail was a bit damaged at the end of Levada Do Moinho. When you want to go and see the gorge (down the waterfall) to trespass the water, you won’t be able to get their easily, due to a landslide (see picture) and once you are there, the water is probably even too wild and high to cross to the other side. The rest of the walk was quite fine and with lots of nice views. But beware if you are afraid of heights or just in general of falling, it might be a bit stressy for you to do this walk. The walk starts behind the church, and you can easily park at the church.
