Sobermo

16th Century Fort overlooking the sea. Built by order of Philip I (1527-1598), according to designs by architect Filipe Terzi and, after his death (in 1598?), Francisco Turriano. From the hill overlooking the sea where it was built, this superb military structure completely controls the entrance of the Sado and, at the same time, subdues the city itself, once within reach of its cannons. It is clear that the St. Philip fortress fulfilled a twofold defensive purpose: while staying alert to the dangers coming from the sea, it attentively watched all movements in the village! From the sea came the already traditional attacks by North African and French pirates. In addition to those, at that time, there were also attacks by the English and the Dutch, who, at the end of the 16th century, were at war with Spain. On the other hand, the Spanish occupier, though certain of the support of the Portuguese elites, most likely feared the lower classes, who were against him. The massive, imposing, unfriendly and threatening bulwarks, the austere entrances and the lairs decisively contribute to reinforcing that vocation of the Philippine fortress. Saint Philip's construction works started in 1582, in the presence of the king himself. The blueprint of the fortress depicts a six-pointed star, and a sinuous outline, likely due to the rugged terrain where it lays its deep foundations. In the fortress there is also a small Joanine chapel, with a rectangular plan. The inner walls and vault are completely covered with rich tiling, part of which narrate the life of Saint Philip. On the vault, we can admire the royal coat of arms in an intense Baroque composition. In the very discreet chancel, with a gilded woodcarving altar, there are small panels with a Marian theme, dating from 1736 and signed by master Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes.

Cool castle with amazing views. Great getaway for a sunset. Elegant cafe on the premises, however they only serve drinks and snacks, at least in November. Come in the morning with sun on the castle, on the afternoon castle will be in shade and city/marina is light up with golden colours.

Everybody who are in Setubal must come here. Location is easy to find, we walk there. View amazing and Atmosphere peaceful. There is places for photos and enjoy the sun. Also cafe impress me: prices not very expansive one sprite and ham cheese toast 5,20€ but look to this toast))) it’s the biggest toast in my life) I recommend this place for everybody.

A place you absolutely must see if you are in Setubal! The view over Setubal and the sea is very nice! I chose to walk there. This is not ideal, because it was very hot (I was in August) and the road is not very safe for foot traffic. I would advise you to go by car. Once you get there, it is really worth a visit, if only for the beautiful view over the city and the sea. The fort is free to enter and within half an hour you will have seen it all. They have a terrace (with a nice view) where you can have a drink.

Beautiful place near Setúbal area. This amazing castle have a clean view over Tróia and Setúbal, they even have tables outside to enjoy some Moscatel while relaxing in this medieval place. A must to go if you are in the area.

Castle located high up in the mountains, which can be explored by the public for free (no admission fee). The Castle are spectacular in itself, but the view over Setubal and Atlantic Ocean is superb. Bar/restaurant is available. I would say that 30 min minimum is required to see the cattle. Cab or car is recommended, as the hill is quite steep for any one that would like to visit the castle by foot. Worth an visit!

Beautiful Fortress! I loved that it was open to the public and so close to the city. In other places in the world this could be easily be charged 7-10 euros. A nice walk about the walls and an amazing view on the Atlantic and the city of Setubal. The place also have a really cute coffee place with astonishing lookout and reasonable prices. The site has clean toilet and an information center with kind service. Highly recommended!

My favourite place for a drink when the weather is good. The gin and tonics are always good and the view is spectacular. This is a must see whenever you are in Setubal and it is certainly one of my favourite spots and top recommendations. I recommend trying a moscatel or a gin with red fruits.

Awesome Castle with Amazing Views! Forte de São Filipe is like a really cool old castle in Setúbal. It's super interesting to explore and has the best views ever from the top. You can learn cool stuff inside about the old times. The people who work there know a lot and are friendly. If you like history or just want to see awesome sights, this castle is a must-visit!

  • 4/5 Victor W. 8 months ago on Google
Impressive and intriguing, historical 16th century hill-top fort with stunning views of Setubal city, port and the Atlantic to the South west. Big bonus was that it was also free entry. There is also a cosy looking restaurant with outdoor seating- didn't eat there though. Overall, would definitely recommend this place for a visit!

  • 5/5 Carla S. M. 8 months ago on Google

Very nice location with historical background, a beautiful view over the bay and café with refreshing drinks. Unfourtunately, some parts of the fort are under construction.

  • 5/5 Igor P. 6 months ago on Google
It has a great view of Setúbal and Troia. You may spend a nice time in the open air bar, enjoying coffee and muscatel with a view. The fort itself is historic and interesting.

One of the must-see Setubal attractions if you plan on visiting the city. It's a bit of a hike if you can walk. Otherwise, you can take a taxi. Built over 700 years ago as part of the city's fortification. Once at the top, make sure to visit the Chapel. The walls and the ceiling are decorated in blue and white tiles. The views of the city and the ocean from the top are beautiful. There is a cafe at the top that serves coffee and drinks.

  • 5/5 Benjamin 5 months ago on Google
Fantastic history. The little tiled church is a great example of blue tiles. Skip the national time museum in Lisbon and just come here. Drinks at the top and snacks with a knock out view. Table service can be arranged from the local cats for the small cost of the ham off your ham cheese croissant.

  • 5/5 Mike S. 5 months ago on Google
There is no admission cost to enter this fort. It offers panoramic views of the area. Accessible from Setúbal by foot, the hike up is nice. There is a chapel and cafe that are both worth a visit.

  • 4/5 Zsolt E. 5 months ago on Google
The place itself is gorgeous! They have a beautiful small church right at the entrance gate, which is cozy and obviously the views are breath-thaking. However, there's not much to do, besides taking photos and sitting in the restaurant. No exhibition, at least not when we visited, not many signs explaining what you are seeing, just the old walls. Not judging, just mentioning, I think the full potential is not yet reached.

  • 5/5 G R. 1 year ago on Google
Free historic fort structure overlooking the entire bay below Setubal. Nice spot for pics and there is a cafe there as well with a nice view. There are also some great restaurants located at the bottom of the hill along the waterway/beach.

  • 5/5 Frags G. 1 year ago on Google
Stunning views over Setúbal and Tróia from this lovely fort. Steep, heart-thumping walk up the hill takes 10-15 min from Luíza Todi, though there is a good road and ample parking at the fort, and a taxi ride from the middle of town is only about €3 too. Once there you're treated to simply stunning views across the hills behind Setúbal, the town itself, and of course the incredible vista of the Rio Sado and Tróia peninsula beyond. There is also a beautiful tiny chapel onsite boasting some incredible tile work. Even better is that you can enjoy the world gliding past on the river with a quiet drink on the terrace. A very nicely decorated Cafe offers great service with friendly staff. Prices seemed OK and definitely worth it for the view. It was reasonably quiet when I went, but I imagine it would be busy in summer when it opens till late in the evening - but it really is a very worthwhile place to maybe grab a daytime coffee, or an evening drink!

  • 5/5 Gunjan S. 1 year ago on Google
Very nice, clean and clam place. We drove to Setubal from Lisbon and made a stop here to visit the fort. No entry and parking fees. Road to reach the fort is very good and easily navigated. View from the fort of the ocean and the city is outstanding. Must visit if you are around setubal. Perfect for a day trip

  • 4/5 Sandip Bhusal (. 11 months ago on Google
Amazing views with lot less crowd. You can take a train directly to setubal from lisbon, then take a bus, walk for 15-20 minutes uphill till you reach the fort. The scenery is beautiful with the view of city and the hills around. Also, entrance to the fort is free and they have a small cafeteria if you’d like some drinks.

  • 5/5 John C. 10 months ago on Google
Such a perfect vantage point to see the entire city of setubal! Nothing much in the fort itself, but it's a wonderful view, relatively good cafe (with such delicious pastries!), and a lot of angles to take photos of the port and the city/sea!

  • 5/5 Betsy B. 1 year ago on Google
Free entry at this fort overlooking setubal and the bay. Beautiful views from different angles. Be sure to stop inside the tiled chapel (a small door to the left as you walk up the stairs entering the door). Take great photos from the high points, both the bay side and the ocean side. Stop in the coffee shop to enjoy a coffee from the top of the world. :)

Placed in an elevated location of the Arrábida mountain range, in the city of Setúbal, is the Fort of São Filipe. There we can enjoy an excellent 360 degree panoramic view over the city of Setúbal itself, the estuary of the River Sado and the sea, the Troia peninsula on the other side of the estuary, and the Arrábida mountain. At the end of October the mountain is covered with green. If you're lucky enough to time your visit with a rainy late afternoon, with small bags of fog climbing the mountain behind while already torn clouds spread troughtout the blue sky with shades of white and gray while reflecting the bright orange color of the late afternoon sun, all of it adds to the atmosphere of the place, and you have a kind of dreamy landscape... Inside the fort of São Filipe, in addition to what is usual within a fort like the sentinel houses, there is a charming chapel, walls covered with Portuguese tiles whose drawings, painted in that typical blue color, represent religious scenes. In a nearby courtyard, a house encloses a tourist information desk and a small, elegantly decorated bar, but those who prefer can sit in the courtyard enjoying the panoramic view of the river estuary, watching the large ships leaving the port sailing towards the sea, and enjoying, perhaps with friends, a refreshing drink and eating some pastrie and cakes bought from the bar. For short, it is a very good place to visit or for a short relax, alone or with friends at any time of the year

  • 5/5 Jordan C. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful views. Castle up in the mountains with views over looking the sea and beautiful green trees. It’s free entry and has a stunning blue and white tile church on the grounds. There is also a cafe (we didn’t go into it) for anyone wanting a bit of lunch or tea.

Nice fortress to visit which provide great view on Setubal and the Sierra of Arabida. It's the good place to start the visit of this natural area. Another good spot for having a small meal outside with a smashing view over the city, a car parking big enough for about 16 cars. The cafeteria has friendly prices and if you liked you can sleep in some of the available rooms they have here. Some history is available too for who like this kind of visitors.
