Attracted by them recently being named „Best restaurant in London“ by TimeOut London, my partner and I recently had lunch here and honestly left with mixed feelings. Service was not very welcoming, portions were small and prices quite steep, especially for Brixton. Yes, the food was exotic and very nice but the taste and the ingredients are not that exceptional that they would justify the price.

Outstanding restaurant serving the best flavours of West Africa. Lunch menu was excellent, really enjoyed all the dishes, can’t wait wait to sample the dinner menu too! I felt Chef Joké passion come through in her food!

Hands down one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. Truly delicious food, great presentation, lovely service and very cool vibe. This food tastes powerful. The tastes and ingredients are interesting, and complement one another. This place is a must-visit for any foodies out there. Will definitely be coming back asap.

We loved it. The food is delicious, the service warm and personable. Small restaurant, so best to book and limit to 2-4 people only. All the starters I would recommend. I loved the cornbread in my main dish but not a massive fan of the mackerel. The Eko beans dish was delicately flavoured and very good. The set lunch menu is good value but I feel you need two starters and a main to leave feeling comfortably full. Definitely worth travelling to Chishuru.

Fabulous meal and experience. Really authentic feel to the food even though its presented and cooked in a higher end restaurant. The chef/owner was really accessible and happy to explain the dishes and answer questions. No hesitation in recommending and can't wait to return.

A hidden dime in the midst of Chapel Row in Brixton. Small, intimate dinning and very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Such a pleasure to experience Nigerian food in a net and innovative way. Dishes came out as tapas style and they had our tastebuds eager for me. The stew was super scrumptious and definitely the stand out dish. Prawns was a small portion and wish they was more of the fried rice as it was great. The spicy sauce was exception, I want the recipe. Service was superb they were so positive and personable throughout the meal. All in all fantastic just wish portions were bigger more indoor seating. Go try it. 🇳🇬

OMFG! This place is so so good. It’s brand new and serves a £30 set menu which would normally dampen my excitement (as I like a choice) but I had heard that this chef beat out a hoard of other chefs to win the Brixton village competition to secure a permanent location so wanted to try it and support local business. It was the best meal I’ve had in a really really long time. Every course was a mix of delicious textures, packing a punch of spice, and absolutely rammed to the nines with flavour. The chef is exceptionally skilled and my friends and I cleared our plates. The snack of black eyed bean and milk cake was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. I found it hard to imagine how it could be topped but the subsequent courses were also glorious. The veggie main of cauliflower with a peanut sauce, plantain, egg and rice was perfectly balanced and my friends said the goat was also a winner. They said the set menu will change regularly so I can’t wait to come back and try what the chef has to offer. The service was very kind, professional and both our server and the chef made sure we were happy and informed about what we were eating and where it came from. Please ALL come and try this amazing West African food. You’ll be so so glad you did.

We had a great time! The corn bites with scotch bonnet sauce was a highlight for me. We really enjoyed the savoury dishes but weren't completely sold on the dessert. All in all though the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and we really enjoyed the meal

The tasting menu is a brilliant introduction to West African cuisine. Highlights for me were the 3 starters and the rice (as good as any Asian restaurant!). Chef Joke came out at the end to talk us through her journey and it really felt like we were eating at her house. Highly recommend

I'm new to West African cuisine and this was a really great experience! The set menu is £48 for 5 dishes which I thought was reasonable given the food portions. My favourites were the corn bites with scotch bonnet sauce, the hand dived scallop, the cornish hake and the chicken thigh. All the dishes had a different flavour and good spice kick too. The hibiscus sour was tasty, although on the smaller side. Staff had good chat and were helpful!

Delicious Nigerian food beautifully presented. We were told by the owner who is also the chef that small menu constantly changes. Three of us eat here and we ordered the entire menu. Definitely recommend and I certainly will be going back.

I wanted to try this place for so long and I’m glad I did as it is an interesting experience. However I don’t think the food and atmosphere justified what we paid. I know the restaurant scene in London and for £45-48 you can get a little more. The menu lacked a showstopper and the dessert was disappointing. Our favourite dish was the cabbage with peanut and plantain sauce. Staff is lovely, but I would not be back.

I had a fab lunch with my husband a good friend at this wonderful restaurant. Inspired by her Igbo roots and Northen Nigerian heritage, the Chef brought together a familiar yet fresh take on a West African by brunch. I loved all the dishes and our lovely conversation reminiscing about Jos with the Chef. I’ll definitely be back for dinner and her Sunday Jollof.

After living in and around Brixton for a long time you end up going to a lot of the same places, so this was a very very welcome change of pace. Best meal I've had in a long time. Chef Poké crunched out dish after dish by herself and each one we had was sublime. The seabass and the ekuru were my personal favourites. Honourable mention to the attasi rice and goat ayamese. How three of them managed to produce such an incredible dining experience for 21 covers sitting down with social distancing in the mad rush before the 10pm curfew is beyond me. Each dish had multiple elements too. Couldn't recommend it more.

Incredible food! I went for lunch with three friends and we ordered everything on the menu and there wasn’t a single dud dish. Amazing punchy flavours and lovely service - I can’t wait to go back and eat it all again.

Chisuru is my new church and I'm here to preach the gospel according to chef Joke! Her dishes favour those who like me, enjoy their food to come with multiple layers in one mouthful. Food in your mouth that will oscillate from sweet, to spicy, to fermented and back again, carousel of flavour. I could write an essay about how good the food is and still not get close enough to adequately representing what magic happens in plain sight of the open kitchen run by chef Joke. From the very first bite to the last, you are left in a state of intrigue, wonderment and giddy joy. Looking under each dish for smoke and mirrors, trying to discover the trickery that takes something that maybe was already familiar to you into something completely new. Chef Joke has given me personally a new found curiosity around so many nigerian ingredients that I've grown up with as staples.

What a great experience at Chishuru for dinner !! It’s so great to see and taste such fine Nigerian cuisine. Every dishes ordered has a unique flavours and combinations of spices, acidity and tastes. Really enjoyed the meal from a cuisine I have little exposure. Dishes are simple and well balance. Be prepared as it can be too spicy for some. Ekuru is a nice starter which will bring you in the mood (Scotch bonnet sauce gives a good kick 😉) Chicken sweetbreads are incredibly delicious and the sauce makes is perfect with acidity from the lime and the sweetness from the plantains. Main dish comes with salad (nothing special, good salad) and plantains (lightly fried with batter but kept nice moisture) Rice is a perfect side where the red pepper dressing matched perfectly. So yeah ! Great experience of Nigerian cuisine with refreshing dishes and flavours ! Staff are very nice and helpful. Oh and the chef comes to greet tables and answers questions. Isn’t fantastic?! If you want to get something deliciously different than the usual in a casual atmosphere, go and pay them a visit ! Highly recommended!

Absolutely insanely delicious. Honestly some of the best food I've ever eaten. We ordered the sweetbreads, goat curry, fritter and rice (between 2) and we're incredibly full by the end of it. The lovely lady who cooks in the kitchen is friendly and incredibly talented. This place absolutely deserves your business. The food is outstanding

Went to the establishment based on previous good reviews. Unfortunately the food was underwhelming, tasting menu starts at 65 quid, starters consists of mostly cheap rice/corn bread, with little to no protein/veggie, bland flavour; entree was one piece of Guinea fowl leg that tasted like regular street market jerk chicken, paired with rather greasy fried rice, portions are very small overall, definitely not impressed. Also not sure if the food was the cause for my upset stomach and diarrhea the next day, would not recommend for the faint hearted lol.

Unbelievably delicious food. Having only tried Nigerian food a couple of times before I was really impressed by the unexpected flavours, the constant play of sweet and salty, citrus and heat. The chicken sweetbreads were standout for me, but the vegetarian options were also delicious, with varied components and a great complexity of flavour. I'm only disappointed that I didn't manage to finish my goat main and am nonetheless still full 5 hours later. Post covid I hope to attend with a large enough group to sample everything on the menu. Yum yum yum!

Creative African dishes but unfortunately not my taste as it doesn’t compare to authentic African food and lost too much of the African tastes. Objectively speaking the food was still yummy but deviated a bit too much and flavours a bit lacking compared to authentic cuisine eg. The egusi. The Guinea fowl was the best out of the whole menu. Plantain was not well cooked for this price point. Service and atmosphere was lovely.

Great dinner spot for a tasting menu that won't completely drain your bank account. For £48pp, you get a 5 course tasting menu that surprises you with each plate. I tend to eat a lot of meat based dishes and not so much vegetables, but their presentation of vegetables made me want seconds of those dishes instead. For mains, you get the option to choose. I highly suggest the chicken. It's soft, full of flavor, and a great portion size. You can also add two extras - the bavette and the whole quail. The bavette was great, but the whole quail was probably my favorite. Don't forget to try their homemade hibiscus juice - also a favorite. The only thing I would not suggest doing is going to the toilet. They use a communal one that was dirtier than ones I've used in Vietnam.

This place is amazing, great staff and the flavours are so unique not what I was expecting but loved everything. We definitely over ate while here on the last days before lockdown. And like Arnold would say. "I'll be back"

Stunning meal at Chishuru tonight. Staff were incredibly welcoming and understandably enthusiastic about the food that Adejokè had to share. A perfectly balanced menu with meat and vegan dishes packed with flavour and textures. Definitely a great recommendation to have the sides to accompany the goat curry, the plantain and rice and beans being delicious accompaniments that I would have been disappointed to have missed. Also perfectly curated drinks menu, had to give the house rum and banana cocktail a go and wasn't disappointed. Also really excited to have had some of the rice and beans leftover and put in a box for lunch tomorrow!

Delicious is not a word worthy of this meal. It was truly amazing. I have never had west African food like this, the way the familiar flavors are blending with one another is something that you have to experience. 100 out of 10

Chishuru is probably one of the great success stories of London’s restaurant scene. I never managed to visit their old location in Brixton nor Joké’s pop up, but their new restaurant wowed me. Very innovative menu, and every single dish full of flavours. The bean cake with duck liver and duck egg sauce was surreal, as was the beef shin soup. TBH, the main course was outdone by the starters. I liked the meringue and mousse dessert as well; it was milder and more subtle. Tried a couple of their signature cocktails. IMO the Suya & Spice is better than their famous okra martini. I plan to be back to try the lunch menu at some point.

Excellent Pepper soup. Surprisingly the cabbage (egusi) reigns supreme among the mains despite strong competition from the (nsala)guineafowl and (mbongo) hake. Great music, especially that #banger Last Last from Burna Boy!! Haha xD

We spent our anniversary here and had the most lovely experience. The service was impeccable and the staff made us feel so special, even giving us a card. The food was amazing and everything lived up to our expectations! Will definitely be coming back again.

first time trying west african cuisine, and we were absolutely blown away - what an explosive combination of flavours! we had the pollock and napa cabbage for mains, both delicious, as were all the starters and the dessert. really liked the ambience too. service was a mixed bag instead, from extremely welcoming and friendly, to rather cold and obnoxious.

Amazing food - please try the Egusi!! Everyone is extremely nice and friendly, perfect dinner for us, 10/10! I should say that my boyfriend is Nigerian and he loved this modern vision of the typical West African dishes. The menu changes every 6 weeks or so, so we’ll be back soon :)

Was very much looking forward to this meal and heard a lot of good things about the spot. Was the first time trying Nigerian food. It is a set menu. Which comes with starters (you don’t get to choose) and a choice of 4 main courses. The starters were mixed. The salad was super small. One would expect a large bowl of salad rather than a super small plate. The goat cigar was very good and was the best starter offered. For mains we chose the fish, chicken and courgette. All dishes were super small. The fish was nice and sauce was tasty. But small in size. The chicken was 3 small pieces. Expected half a chicken at the price you pay The desert was decent - the guava sorbet was nice. Honestly I don’t get the hype of Chishuru. It was overpriced (£48 each) and the dishes were small. For Brixton I expect to get more for your money. This is what you would pay for a top end restaurant in Central London.

Dining at Chishuru is nothing short of exceptional! There were many moments when I let out a deep "mmmm" as my fork reached my mouth. I was surprised and delighted by every single bite. Chef Joke is a master of flavour - her use of ingredients is so fun, and so necessary. She has nothing to prove, yet she is showcasing that West African food can be contemporary. The Ekuru - standout. The chargrilled Cauliflower - a big hug. The sides, ALL the sides! Not forgetting the drinks... The Banana One gets a special shout out as the use of Plantain was amazing. I can't wait to see how Chef Joke's menu grows and what delights she will serve up to us in the future. Plates scraped! Belly's full!

One of the best meals I've had this year - if not ever!! The food was ridiculously delicious and so reasonably priced for the quality of cookery and ingredients. We got starters, mains and sides to share and it was plenty of food for all four of us. We had the cassava fritters, Ekuru and grilled chicken to start followed by the sea bass and peanut butternut squash. Every dish was full of flavour and texture; it was hard to pick a favourite! On top of all of this, everyone working at Chishuru was so lovely and friendly to us. We even got to chat with the amazing chef Joké after our meal! Can't wait to come back and try more - thank you!

  • 5/5 Sally T. 3 years ago on Google
Probably the best food we have eaten in a LONG time.. and we eat out a lot in so called normal times and are picky (I know, I know).. but there is something magical happening in that small kitchen.. you know the score, sometimes you go somewhere everyone is raving about and the starters are great and the mains a bit meh or vice versa but this place hits the spot every time.. flavours I have never tasted before, beautifully cooked and presented.. just AMAZING! Go now before it gets too busy.. you won't regret it.. the team are great and Joke, the mastermind, is just wonderfully charming. Thanks for a great night!

I ordered a 3 course meal from Chishuru for friends as a gift via Dishpatch and they said it was absolutely delicious. The prep to cook/reheat was less than 30 minutes. The servings were generous and despite not expecting kale and pickled onion to work together they said it was delightful. Definitely recommend and will use again.
