This
regional
museum
of
popular
arts
and
traditions
was
established
in
a
house
of
wealthy
families
in
the
eighteenth
century,
in
the
heart
of
the
ancient
city
of
Sfax.
The
facade
of
the
house
is
modest
and
its
design
is
purely
classic,
which
is
typical
of
Tunisian
residences.
Around
its
square
courtyard,
rooms
are
arranged,
each
room
on
one
of
its
sides,
in
the
shape
of
an
inverted
T.
The
“majlis”
is
located
opposite
the
entrance
door,
with
its
two
compartments
that
are
suitable
for
storing
supplies
and
storing
waste,
and
its
two
cellars
in
which
two
beds
are
placed.
All
these
rooms
are
often
occupied
by
children
and
grandchildren
gathered
around
the
head
of
the
family.
It
is
noted
that
Dar
Al-Jalouli
is
built
on
two
floors.
In
these
halls,
especially
the
halls
of
the
lower
floor,
scenes
from
traditional
daily
life
in
the
city
of
Sfax
were
recreated,
imprinted
with
the
character
of
the
urban-rural
duality,
because
its
residents
spend
a
large
part
of
the
year
in
their
gardens
(singular,
“jnan”),
which
until
recently
surrounded
the
city.
