It's a very popular and one of the best religious places of Darjeeling. The Temple was built in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing and is perched atop the Observatory Hill in Darjeeling and is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist religions. The location is just besides Darjeeling mall atop a small hill. The temple is great in every sense of the word - whether it is the natural beauty of the place, or the spiritual vibes and lovely atmosphere. It's well maintained and clean. Overall a wonderful experience. A must visit sightseeing destination while tour to Darjeeling.

Mahakal mandir is located near the Darjeeling Mall road, on top of the observatory hill. It's quite popular among the locals and one of the best tourist attractions. The way to mandir is an uphill narrow road and is only accessible by foot. The view from the top is amazing and serene.

Mahakal temple is one of most attractive spot in Darjeeling. Its a very old temple but nicely maintained. Located on top of the observatory hill this temple provides a serene view of the nature. Devoted mainly to Lord Shiva but other Gods and Godess like Devi Durga, Devi Kali, Lord Ganesh, Lord Hanuman, Sai Baba and Lord Krishna is also worshiped here. If you are lucky enough you can also enjoy free "bhog" provided by temple association. Khichdi along with payesh and sabji is provided. Its a must visit place. Om Namah Shivaya.

A spiritual place, must visit this place on early morning. Here it's a temple of lord shiv but temple will give you feeling of Buddhism. It's located on highest point of mall road area. For visiting this place you have to go via mall road then you have to up. Road are very steep. Be careful when you walk down. If you want to click good photos must visit this place. Temple is very clean. You will find full peace here

A serene place where hinduism and budhhism perfectly blends in bhakti....a historical place of darjeeling too a m7st visit place...according to local folk story...the idol i.e., 'durjaylinga' of the temple is the intiatial for naming Darjeeling...also now it is been renovated and there are 12 'jotirlinga' of lord shiva replica is build for visitors and pilgrimers...and also a mahakal cave, Kirat Limbu 'Manghim' or temple, a Rai community temple is situated there...so a rare unique combination of religious believes could be seen...thanks for reading..

The Mahakali temple is located on the top of observatory hill and thus the climb can be a bit tiresome for tourists with back and knee problem. I visited on a day when Darjeeling received heavy snowfall and thus had to manoeuvre a bit from ensuring that I do not tumble. For safety there are railings placed to hold and walk on the top tier. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva though there are other deities that are worshipped as well. A amalgamation of Hinduism and Buddhism is clearly evident. I also found a few dogs that freely roam around the temple as we co exist and I loved this gesture The colourful flags underneath the canopy of tree enhances the beauty of this temple as one walks through the cloud cover. Apart from paying obeisance here I would surely recommend to visiting the Mahakali cave that is accessible from the temple. The trek back can be a bit cumbersome but the adventure of getting inside a cave and pay respect to the deities make up for the efforts. However, do avoid if you feel claustrophobic inside enclosed area. Do try and visit when Bhog is served free as its delicious and surely a blessing from the Lord. I have share some of the videos I have taken Enroute and I hope you will like them

A quiet place hosting the abode for the mahakal shiva and shakti. One can feel divinity spending some time here, unlike the chaos in other holy places. enjoyed the view and the riot of colors here in the bright sunny weather with cool mountain breeze. Scenically beautiful and spiritual place to visit. Excellently maintained by local authority. The temple is a mix of Hindu and Buddhist worship. Temple is surrounded by prayer flags. It's a peaceful place with a calm atmosphere. There are monkeys around be mindful. Worth the walk up the hill.

We were eager to visit the Mahakal Temple as it was one of the highly recommended tourist attractions in Darjeeling and marked as a must visit. From the Darjeeling Mall road, one takes the right hand side road. There are local shops on the road selling designer items to woolen clothes. As the Temple is located on top of the observatory hill the way to the mandir is a narrow uphill road which feels quite steep at times. The road is inundated with monkeys so keep some loose food items to give to them, The Temple feels so serene. One can feel the spiritual bliss and offer their prayers to the almighty. It will fill your heart. We stayed there for some time, had Prasad and took our downhill climb thereafter. All in all it was beautiful experience and would highly recommend.

It is just 5 minutes walking distance from mall. The roads are quite steep. But the best thing about the temple is it is properly maintained for all mythological facts of Shiva. There are stories and mantra written in Japanese in the temple. You can also see a cave and Amba, mahakali and Ganesh Mandir before you visit the Shiv. There are seven bells In every place that creates the sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa sound.

A wonderful place to visit for any tourist coming to Darjeeling to spend their vacations. There are beautiful trees, monkeys and a good view of the town. It is known for it's religious significance in the area. There tradition and the thinking about the God is really proudful. It's a a uphill walk of about 15 minutes from the Mall but I'd say it's totally worth it. I went during rains, and place looked even more beautiful.

The Mahakal Temple is a sacred temple located just 5 minutes uphill walk from the Darjeeling Mall. The main Mahakal temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The Temple is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist religions. Three gold plated Lingams are there inside the main temple, alongside the Lingams idols of Lord Buddha are also there. Both a Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk perform religious rituals and offer prayers simultaneously. It is a unique religious site where both religions coexist harmoniously. The place is popular to the visitors for both pilgrimage and leisure. The view of mount Kanchenjunga can be witnessed from the temple complex. It’s a popular tourist attraction.

MAHAKAL TEMPLE Darjeeling The Mahakal Temple or Mahakal Mandir Translation: The master of Kaais a sacred Hindu temple located in Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal, India dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the third god in the Hindu triumvirate. The Temple was built in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing and is perched atop the Observatory Hill in Darjeeling and is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist religions. It is a unique religious site where both religions coexist harmoniously. Mahakal Temple stands as a historical edifice on the spot where a Buddhist Monastery named 'Dorje-Ling' once stood which was built by Lama Dorjey Rinzing in 1765. Prior to that it is believed that the spot was a sacred spot of the aboriginal Lepcha folks. Later a monastery was constructed on the spot and worshipped by both Lepchas and Bhutias. It was after the invasion of the Gurkha Army around 1788 that the monastery was desecrated and destroyed by the invading troops and in course of time the sacred place overwhelmingly began to represent the Hindu symbolisms of the majority Nepali community. Legend has it that three Shiva-Lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar (Lord Shiva) manifested themselves at the site in 1782. The monastery itself was plundered and destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion after which it was shifted to Bhutia Busty about a mile away and was called the Bhutia Busty Monastery. The Temple is a much revered and visited religious shrine of the area. Legend has it that the name Darjeeling was derived from the name of the monastery 'Dorje-Ling' itself.

a quiet place hosting the abode for the mahakal shiva and shakti. One can feel divinity spending some time here, unlike the chaos in other holy places. enjoyed the view and the riot of colors here in the bright sunny weather with cool mountain breeze... will always cherish the memories. (Visitors tip: accessible car route is from the back side, passing the gorkha hill council, a far lesser walk than the approach through the mall road). We visited in December 2019. The menace of monkeys have lessened. The road leading from the mall is quite steep and a long walk. There are uncountable number of prayer flags around the temple and one can get a nice view of the lower ground through the thick canopy of these flags and trees. There's also a place near the temple door to keep shoes and slipper. This was worth seeing because this is the only place I have seen both Buddhist and Hindu worship together in the same place. There is a mixture of both Buddhist and Hindu Iconography and a very uplifting vibe about the place. At the Shiva shrine there was both a Brahmin priest performing the puja and a Buddhist monk doing japa. It was very inspiring. Great Place

Absolutely awesome place ..... Located just outside Chowrasta. After a steep but short climb, you will reach the temple, and its worth the time and effort. Must visit if you are religious and even if you are not religious.the oldest place of worship in Darjeeelng (then called Dorje-Ling or place of roaring thunder).A beautiful temple with both Hindu and Buddhist deities and an interesting history. The architecture has both influences and is something unique for anywhere. Nice and spiritual place i mean its a Sivaji temple and you feel very much relaxed and clamed with you visit there totally a holy and peaceful temple but only thing is beware of Monkeys You have to ride high rise roads for about 1 kilometers to reach this nice temple. If you visit Darjeeling you must see this temple..Elderly may find the place difficult to reach even through road Thank you Please give a like

Far from disturbances and very calm. You will like this place not just because it's temple, in addition you will get peace and you can do meditation and also breath easy. Over and above it's decorated very colourfully which is an eye feast. Sit on the stands/benches with cool feeling in hot sun. Good time to visit is noon!

You need to climb a bit of uphill to reach this temple. I suggest keep some water with you, don't drink untill you reach the temple though as water will slow you down ;) Now, it's really colorful with all the Tibetan flags hanging. There are multiple small small temples in the campus. Do visit this place.
