It is 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Alipurduar, the nearest town. The King of Bhutan used the fort to protect the portion connecting Tibet with India, via Bhutan. The Fort was the most notorious and unreachable prison in Indian after the famous Cellular jail in Andaman. One can trek for some more kilometres to the top to reach Lepchakha village, the scenary from the top is just mind blowing!

Buxa Fort is located at an altitude of 867 metres (2,844 ft) in the Buxa Tiger Reserve, in the Kalchini CD block in the Alipurduar subdivision of the Alipurduar district in West Bengal, India. It is 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Alipurduar, the nearest town. The King of Bhutan used the fort to protect the portion connecting Tibet with India, via Bhutan. Still later during the unrest in the occupation of Tibet, hundreds of refugees arrived at the place and used the then-abandoned fort as a place of refuge. The Fort was the most notorious and unreachable prison in Indian after the famous Cellular jail in Andaman. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was said to have been imprisoned here for the time being. The fort overlooks a big playground. One can reach the fort by trekking a long way through a small community.

Buxa Fort in Dooars is one of the earliest forts in Eastern India. It is said that the Tibetan Emperor Tsong-Sin-Gyampo built Buxa Fort during the Tibetan invasion in North East India during the second half of 7th century. But there is also another theory for the origination of Buxa Fort. The first ruler of Kamtapur dynasty King Sangkalp might built the fort to stop the invasion of Tibetan army. It has been long under the possession of Koch Kingdom until the Bhutanese occupied it and used Buxa Fort as a garrison to protect the portion of the famous Silk-route connecting Indian with Tibet. At the end of 18th century British army invaded the Buxa Fort on request of Koch King and took away from the Bhutanese in the second Dooars war. The British reconstructed the fort after occupying it.

It was a lifetime experience to trek to Buxa fort. The trek was adventurous and exciting. It's a great historical landmark of North Bengal. The scenic beauty once you reach the fort is mesmerising. Far from the busy life it felt really soothing. We visited some ruins which witnessed the ancient history of the fort. There were a few resting spots where we could avail refreshments during the long 3 km trek.

"মেঘের গায়ে জেলখানা" - Poet Subhash Mukhopadhyay, once a prisoner of Buxa Fort, has described this infamous prison camp during the British period by this name. This abandoned fort is located in the remote area of Buxa Hills at a height of 2,844 feet inside the Buxa National Park. It is said to be the most notorious and inaccessible prison in India after Andaman's Cellular Jail. The nature here is decorated in a new form during the enchanting monsoon of Dooars. The surroundings become alive and fresh with the incessant rain. It receives the highest rainfall in the state. Buxa is called 'Wettest place of West Bengal.'(500 cm annually)

Buxa Fort is a historical place, it's ruins are here also some restoration work by government has been done. It was once a territory of Bhutan King. In British rule it was used as a jail for freedom fighters and considered as the 2nd most impenetrable jail after cellular Jail of Andaman. One has to trek for some kilometres to reach the top, level - easy to moderate. The fort is on a plain surface on the top of the hill and the surroundings have big trees, the serenity of the place is beyond words.. when it rains the place becomes more magical, mist covers the top, it often gives horror movie vibes 😜! One can trek for some more kilometres to the top to reach Lepchakha village, the scenary from the top is just mind blowing!

Buxa fort was a detention camp of the British. It was captured by them from the Bhutan king. Nowadays the condition of the fort is very bad, almost ruined. To visit this historical place, you have to enter the core area of Buxa Tiger Reserve Forest. The entry gate is at Rajabhatkhawa. Ticket price is Rs. 120/- per head for the Indians. Then you have to proceed through dense forest and reach Santalabari. Stopping can be dangerous in the forest. Rest your vehicle and take local vehicle upto Zero point. A local guide will be helpful for the first timer. And then your trekking will start for another 2 km through the cart. You may take rest on the way. There are shops in the villages. Aged persons can face difficulties to trek. On the way from the viewpoint, you can see the Jayanti river, Bala river passing through the forest. Arriving at the fort, you can realise how hard it was to escape for the prisoners at that time as such a prison was set up there. Alipurduar is 14 km away from Rajabhatkhawa and from then Santalabari is almost 16 km. Remember, starting at an early morning will be a good choice. Go and enjoy the trip ☺️

It is a almost 12 Km up and down hike from the base. Initially you have to take forest department car from santalabari to reach out the base and then start the hike to reach the fort. It takes approximately 250 Rs. per car along with the guide charge. During the hiking the scenic beauty of the place is mesmerizing. After reaching the fort you will able to observe the prisons where the Britishers imprisoned the freedom fighters. It is said that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was also imprisoned here for a time being. On your way to the fort there are small places to seat for a while to take rest. Small shops of momos, tea and other snacks are available near the fort for the visitors. It is a good day trip option while visiting Jayanti.

Buxa fort is one of the famous tourist destination in dooars. This fort has a historical value. Fort has many stories in pre independence era. If you take a guide he will share the story of freedom fighters. But this fort is not properly maintained, some negligence found here. But the view and way to reach the fort is nice. No vehicles are reaching out, only trek is the option here. So take water when you will start from zero point.

A historic fort located within dense natural forest in eastern Himalayas, was built by Bhutanese monarchy centuries ago. After British government defeated Bhutanese king back in nineteenth century, the entire buxa region including the fort became Indian territory. Then it operated as a frontier fort aa well as jail for native Indian revolutionaries.

Although it is an underrated place but has a very significant historical importance to it. This fort was bought by the Britishers(when the Indian colony directly came under the Queen's rule) from the King of Bhutan. Britishers used this place as a jail for the freedom fighters. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was also help captive here for some time. During that point of time there existed a train line near Jayanti river from there people had to walk all the way to Salthalbari and then up to the Buxa Fort. Present situation is terrible, only a handful of prison quaters are there. All the others has dilapidated. Another fact about this place is that when China occupied Tibet, many Tibetans came down to this Fort and stayed here for many years. It was only after that the Fort dilapidated. Please do a small hike from Santhalbari. Govt. of West Bengal must protect it.

You will feel less stress and more relaxed after staying there. Mind and body will be cool and calm. Go and enjoy with your family, friends. Spend some good time and make some good memories. Fantastic memory of mine is Buxa fort.

Buxa fort trek took roughly 1hr from zero point. On the way one will find the buxa view point from where you can see the vast forestry land along with Jayanti river. The fort which was jail previously is now renovated but because of the renovation the originality got affected in a larger scale.

Buxa Fort is a historical place. Here are the ruins of a prison built during the British period. It was built at the top of a hill at an altitude of 2600 feet in the middle of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Prisoners participating in the Indian War of Independence were kept in this jail. But this historical fort is now ruined. The government should focus on conserving it.To reach Buxa Fort, there is a weekly Government bus service from the nearby town of Alipurduar Or you can rent a car and go any day from September 15th to June 15th. There are also homestays and hotels to stay here.

This place is very close to Indian sentiment regarding great freedom fight against imperial British. This old fort was converted to a invincible dungeon to keep potential freedom fighters. And one of the significant name was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose! At present it is almost broken down, but still carries the every moment of history. How to reach - nearest motorable point is Santalabari, from there need to take guide and trek around 2 km. Accommodation - no such good option, you can either climb another 2 km up to Lepchakha or get down to Santalabari.

Buxa Fort is a must visit place. When we went there, it was in reconstruction, so there were no tickets to enter. The whole area was so damn beautiful and relaxing. There is football ground. I don't know the exact date but they organize a football competition in a particular time period in that ground.

A short, simple trek from Santalabari, Buxa Fort is one of India's most iconic prisons on the mainland. Currently, entry to the fort is a bit sketchy as they've converted it into a museum and expect payment. Personally, I don't like that as the entire infrastructure is maintained by the locals but the govt. doesn't aid the locals much (as per my conversations with the local Dhukpa tribe). The stories from the land and it's riches are definitely lovely to hear and enriching in terms of what you learn about life. Definitely a worthy trek, but entering the fort as such, not too much.

It's a 3km hike. Currently it's under repair. So closed to public. Don't hike unless you really want to visit Lepchakha. Because the fort itself is not worth your energy and time.

Trekking to Buxa Fort with my 8 year old twin daughters was a great experience. Initially we were scared whether we can reach...but as we started we got more and more excited and continued. Our Guide Suraj was a calm person who pitched in whenever we thought of giving up. You need to travel 2.5 km by local car and book a Compulsory guide for 900 rs. The fort is ok and under renovation but the trekking experience is worth the price. Must try

The historic Buxa Fort is located at an altitude of 2600 feet and is a part of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Buxa Fort Trek is one of the most popular treks in the Dooars region. It is an easy trek and takes about 2 hours to reach the Buxa Fort from the base of the hill at Santalabari. Usually, tourists and travellers visiting Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti also trek up to the Buxa Fort and a few all the way up to Lepchakha. Infact, there are a few trek routes from the Buxa Fort itself going to Lepchakha, Rover’s Point and Rupam Valley.

One of the best trekking experiences a hiker can enjoy while visiting Buxa Tiger Reserve. The approximately 3 km trek includes breathtaking scenic beuties with wild flowers and streams. The Buxa Fort has historical significance as inside it's fort Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was kept captive for sometime by the British. The whole place is now getting renovated & restored by the Archaeological survey of India. Its a moderate Trek for Old people and very easy for young hikers. The top of the hill near the fort has a lush green field which is pretty appropriate to play ⚽. A must visit place if you are planning your itenary for North Bengal.

It is said that Netaji was also captive in for some time. Even freedom fighters send a letter to Rabindranath Tagore and he also replied to them. But it need maintenance only few handful of prison quarter are there. A very nice and quiet place to visit for every traveller who loves trekking.

Buxa Fort is a dilapidated fort built by the Britishers.Formerly it was in Bhutan but after the king of Bhutan lost to the British the fort became the property of India. There is motorable road upto zero point and from there one has to trek for 2.5 kms to reach the fort. The trek can be continued for another 2 kms to reach Lepchakha where there is a Buddhist monastery and a few homestays.Resently the honourable chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee has sanctioned 50 crores of rupees for the reconstruction of the fort and the work has begun. It is a bit difficult for elderly people and children to trek, but the is worth visiting.

I have one of the most memorable trekking experience while trekking Buxa Fort. We came here during Monsoon, 2018. We were trekking in the rain wearing rain-coats. :) This is an old British Fort. Although most of the walls of the fort are now ruins, prison cells can still be seen inside the fort. Our guide told us that Netaji was kept here for few days.

Buxa fort is actually made by Bhutan king with woods .There was two war for these fort. British Government take it from Coochbehar king who won it in war against Bhutan King .Bhutan King declare war against British Government to take the fort back and won the fight .Then British Government declare war against Bhutan for the fort and won it back with the help from the king of Coochbehar. After taken it under control of then British Government turned these fort into prison. These second prison made by British Government in unindependent INDIA after Cellur Jail in Andaman . In these prison they prisoned three famous freedom fighter one at same time and they are BRAVEST SON OF INDIA And First Prime Minister of Undivided INDIA NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE, Prafulla Chaki, Jatin Das. Most surprising thing is they don't know that they prisoned in same prison on same time. These fort turned prisoned also have Britsh Government Income tax department office . These fort is highly guarded by British army . They have also have watch tower in surrounding mountain to watch the prison and have some kind of communication system with the fort for communication . These prison location is in such position that it impossible to escape from it. To reach Buxa fort you have to come Santhalkhola from there you have book a car which will drop you a particullar spot Santalbari from there you have to track 4.5 km -5 km upto Buxa Fort and guide. Car will take INRV200 rupees charge for up down but in my opinion take car for only up time. Guide will take anther INR 350 rupees. It takes around one half hour to track upto buxa fort .You can see Great Hornbill bird on these track. Maximum Fort is destroyed by famous 1993 flood including its original tour path. Now a days Buxa fort is temporarily closed for maintenance.

Trekking for this place starts just a little above Santalbari. When you enter the Buxa forest reserve you get a ticket for visiting the places in the forest. Roughly the ticket price is 120. Well the trekking part is awesome. Wear boots while trekking in this place. You need a lot of strength to walk all that way up. But once you reach their all you hard work and pain will pay you back with the scenic beauty of Buxa fort. This place has a big football playground which looks amazing. The dogs at these place are very cute. Well this is also a nice place for clicking photographs.
