I highly recommend the House of the Trembling Madness if you're ever in York. This lovely pub is located upstairs, above the shop. Check out their daily specials, particularly their stews. I had their venison stew which was delightful. Vegans and Vegetarians - there are options for you as well. We also ordered the veg sausage with mashed potatoes and peas. Yum! Pro-tip: try to visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

This is a bit of Hike up flights of stairs but worth the effort. Its not a massive room and can get quite busy. Ales to choose from on a board which is constantly updated. Plenty to look at on the walls, great staff who were very patient. We did not eat here but the food coming out looked excellent. As far as we could see it was being preped behind the bar in the smallest 'kitchen' area I have ever seen. But it was all done without fuss. Its got to be worth a visit by everyone - Just give it a go, take it all in and leave trembling

Great pub above a shop with biggest variety of beer I've ever seen. We didn't eat here, but wished we had as the food looked great. Beer selection brilliant and well kept. Full of character. We will definitely be back.

What a brilliant place, beer and spirit shop downstairs and restaurant upstairs. Beers all reasonable prices with locals and tourists purchasing whilst I was there. Nice to see so many local brands represented. The restaurant and bar is upstairs, lots of beers on tap and in the fridge. Or you can buy in the shop then take upstairs to drink, so the choice is massive. Liked that there was various price points for all budgets. Loved the medieval character of the restaurant upstairs and was greeted by two super friendly staff who were really welcoming. Amazed at the amount of food produced out of the small kitchen. Well there are cheese boards and Trembling madness ones. Looked beautiful and so much food, made with all different cheeses that were gorgeous. Grapes, fresh bread, lots of accompaniments that all paired with the cheeses lovely. The pies also looked great which the people opposite were having. They do breakfast from 10.30, then after 12 Various platters, pies, sausages, burgers plus smaller dishes and bar snacks. If you want to go somewhere with great food, generous portions, wide selection of beers and a great atmosphere, then I would highly recommend.

Discovered it by accident and I’m happy I did. You enter and it’s basically a mini market with tonnes of beer all in excellent prices. Go upstairs to the small pub for superb beer selection and a small kitchen where the guys will cook huge portions of excellent food. Honestly they are huge and super cheap and tasty. Loved the ambient, loved the beer and you have to try it

We did not eat at the bar but did buy some bottles of Belgian beer in the shop below. Would definitely go back for food as it looked very good. Note the stairs to the bar are steep so if someone has mobility issues this might be an issue.

Lovely but small pub upstairs, set in a lovely old building. Most people seem to only stop off for a swift half so tables become available quite readily. And with a mind blowingly excellent shop downstairs!

My friends had told me about this place and I recommended it to my wife who visited York on a "shopping" trip 🤔 with her friend 5 years ago. She loved it and promised to bring me here. I was not disappointed and the friendly service, the decor, the views of the Minster and the general buzz of the place really was to my liking. We stayed for a couple of drinks but there was a constant flow of people coming and going that showed how popular the place was. We had not long had brunch and regretted it as the food that came to the tables next to us looked really great (the pies especially would have fed a regiment). All in all I think this was the best hostelry we visited during our weekend break in York.

Tiny medieval pub upstairs from the best offy ever. Really nice place to come for a pint and friendly staff who'll chew your ear off. Actually, I have to edit my review as I've been thinking about this. It's great. We have a staff who are obviously from different backgrounds and different places, but they all seem to get on like clockwork and will make sure you get your drinks quickly as well as being happy to answer any questions you have. On the other hand, we have people from eighteen to eighty all sat there loving the place without a second thought. From the stag do (well behaved as well!) To the octogenarian lady with her family who had some cheeky remarks and a boss smile. All there and all in between. This pub is incredible and if you can get in there then for the love of Odin then do. It's so good.

Excellent bar that also serves good food to keep you going. The bar is upstairs from the shop which houses a large selection of beers and other alcohol (whisky, him, rum etc.). You can purchase from the huge array in the shop and for a small charge drink the beers you bought upstairs at the bar. More than enough to keep any beer fanatic happy 🍻 There is some limited seating outside and be aware that it's a popular place so you may find the seating upstairs already taken.

Found this hidden gem on Google Maps and had to stop in for a bite and a pint for dinner. The building this pub is housed in made me feel like a wary traveler from the 1400s. Had the venison stew and a mango cider, which were both really good. People talk about how bad the food is in England, but I've been eating quite well so far during my travels in London & York 👌

Amazing place. A huge selection of beers, wines and spirits on the ground floor and in the basement. Upstairs is an amazing bar serving a great range of drinks. A great many things adorn the walls from animal heads to human skulls.

Highly unusual decor within this lovely building. Somehow it all comes together to create an ambiance few can imitate. Well worth a visit.

What a fantastic strange weird place, love it. My wife and i called in for a look around the shop and noticed upstairs there was a bar, so we just had to try it, so glad we did. Very friendly staff and great beers, what more could you want. Can't comment on the food as when we were there no one was eating but looking at the pictures on some of the reviews it does look nice. Highly recommended and will be going back when we are next in York

Real hidden gem in York. Basement has a better then average choice of Whisky/Rum/Gin etc. Ground floor is Craft Beer heaven (plus a fairly decent choice of Cuban cigars) & the top deck is a cool little bar. Highly recommended & I will visit again when I am next in York

Really cool little pub and shop The shops is a must stop for anyone who cares about what they are drinking as there is an incredible range of beers whiskeys etc.etc. The staff are caring and knowledgeable The pub is very busy and you may find yourself unable to find a place to sit but it's worthwhile if only for the environment and decor really cool spot!

The stew was hearty and flavourful. But it qas a little too salty. If they could dial down the salt it'd be perfect. The pub is small, so be prepared to wait. Service is typical pub style service.

The shop has an incredible selection of beers and spirits! Upstairs the bar is Old World, Game of Thrones vibe - wonderful to sit in and enjoy drinks! We ordered some great beers and the bread and dips which was delicious!

We were recommended this place as a weird and wonderful experience that we must check out when in York and it couldn't have been more accurate. It's definitely different to what a normal pub is. You enter on the ground level with every bottle of spirit that you could possibly imagine on offer to buy. If you go down the staircase there is even more bottles of spirits in display cases. If you go up the stairs there is a bar, serving the majority of what was on the lower levels. The staff are really friendly and offered detailed suggestions and recommendations. Check it out if in York.

The shop downstairs is cute with such a fantastic variety in alcohol. I went upstairs for the bar... BEAUTIFUL. You can see York Minster from the window. The seats are cute, the fur and pillows fit so well, the animal heads are impressive and the candles are fascinating. The staff were lovely and very accommodating. From my visit to York, this was my favourite pub to have a gin and lemonade.

Cool place! Feels like Viking. It’s got a wide range selection of beers but I was here for the food. Ordered a small steak pie. Big portion & comforting.

Do not miss this pub! It's above the liquor store. Great old time ambience. Great selection of ales and wines. They provide shot glass tastes of the ale is unfamiliar.

What a hidden gem of a pub, shop and place... My only regret is not being able to stay longer and try the food, which look and smelt amazing. The selection of real ales and larger was great, and i cant praise the staff high enough, these people obviously love the job, are very passionate to providing a great service and experience. The decor and atmosphere is quirky, surreal and practical, there has obviously been a loot of work to make the place look this amazing and humble. All in great place to visit, enjoy and im looking forward to coming back. 10/10

Craft beer, cask beer, burgers, sausages, polite staff, authentic atmosphere and reasonable prices. What else can you want?

Very different venue housing a wide variety of drinks in the upstairs bar. Has a shop below to purchase bottles. Speed of service is very variable which is the only downpoint.

It's an interesting place with the alcohol shop on two floors, and pub upstairs. There is a very good selection of beers/spirits from all over the world. We didn't go upstairs to the bar, so can't comment on that, although we saw that you are able to pay a "corkage" price and take your purchase upstairs to drink. The only downside for us was the prices! You could find most things elsewhere a lot cheaper, but that's what you get from a "tourist" shop in the centre of York. Hence we didn't buy anything, but it was certainly worth a look as it's such a unique place. Oh, and there was a Cuban Cigar cabinet too, although we didn't see the contents.

One of the best pubs in York hands down. Every time I'm in the city I go. Incredible selection of keg and cask beer. Probably the best selection of bar snacks I've seen with flavoured olives, nuts and pork scratchings. The food specials are to die for if you get there before they sell out and if not the platters are enormous! Plus if you want something different beer wise just go to the bottle shop downstairs and bring it up (one of the original and best bottle shops in England)

We went to buy some drinks there but to our surprise, it had a pub upstairs. Perfect for chilling out, great choices for beer and ciders. Staff is friendly and fun.

Gem of a pub upstairs from the well stocked off licience with an extensive drinks selection. Including some excellent Belgian beers. The food is homemade and very tasty and filling.
