Great museum located in the upper part of Wilton Park in Batley. It's got good exhibitions on Egypt, Africa, Asia and local interests. Nice place to bring children and then spend time in the park. There's a lovely gift shop and there's plenty of free parking. There's a nice down hill walk through woods to the lower park of part of Wilton Park, when you've finished your visit to the museum.

Me and my son came here for a visit, really good museum of different civilizations, Egyptian, African etc. Helpful staff, set in nice gardens too. Good for a free visit. Has a decent little gift shop too.

The Museum (FREE Entry !) also allows admission to the nearby Butterfly House (open April to Halloween). Although it is a small museum, it can nonetheless provide a good & interesting half day out - with the surrounding park & Butterfly House. Local History & Ancient Egypt are the principal themes, but there is also a well stocked shop with plenty of tempting souvenirs (especially for kids) & hot beverages. The staff are nice & friendly (& in the Butterfly House, quite knowledgeable as well !) Although I visited in mid August, there weren't a lot of Butterflies in the Butterfly House, but there was very cheap Tea & Coffee there (plus low cost souvernirs) - together with the chance to handle some bugs ! Worth a visit, definitely. Oh, and the toilets in the Museum are worth a visit too - for the art on display inside !

How have I failed to visit this gem for so long? I've been to the park so many times but never been to the museum. Came for the first time and today with my daughter and was blown away by the place, its contents and above all the friendliness of all the staff. In the house we received a warm welcome and a brief introduction to where everything was and then in the recently reopened butterfly house a personal tour, a talk on various bugs, use of microscopes and more, the passion was evident. Clean, well laid out, full of content and free, we're lucky to have access to things like this and it deserves all the support we can give it.

A great place to spend a morning or afternoon. Free parking and lots of walks and trails to enjoy. Staff were really friendly and enthusiastic, and (shoutout to Elizabeth!) gave us a basic run down of the history of the house and the story of Bagshaw on arrival which was a lovely touch! Three rooms to explore downstairs and three rooms upstairs, my favourite being the Eygpt room! Entry is free, and gift shop is reasonably priced.

A special place. Wish it still had its Jungle section but the Egypt / Pyramid section still amazes me to this day.. Been going since I was 5-6 and now I'm 35. 😍 It.

Beautiful museum, used to come here regularly as a child; have just revisited as an adult and it's as good as I remember! Great for local history and the Egyptian exhibit has always been a favourite. Staff were really helpful and friendly, plus there's also a wonderful little shop! Fab visit πŸ‘Œ

A wonderful little museum mainly about the local area of Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike, a real hidden gem. I live in the area but have never been, they say you don’t do the tourist trail in your own area and sadly, that’s true as this museum is fab. Rooms dedicated to local dignitaries and famous building and places in the area. A room showing typical holiday destinations in the 19th century. Lots of information and stories from local people about living in the area. A beautiful interior. So glad we decided to explore on our doorstep

Unique place, very interesting halls with different themes. Egypt is a uniquely made hall, just like a tomb. it was an extraordinary experience for our whole family.

Museum closed due to the V. The garden next to the museum is worth it's weight in gold and is ripe for re-redevelopment back to the period Victorian Italianate garden that it is. Anyone with any sence should be able to see that this historical horticultural gem would draw restorstion funds from Heritage England and lottery funds ect. Creating 25 jobs.

Great place to take kids. There were some activities for children. The place is small but enough to see my granddaughter especially liked the mummies and mummified hand. If it's good weather there is plenty of walking and a playground in Wilton park. Shame the butterfly house was closed.

It's a nice museum but feels a little worn down nowadays, I've been visiting since I was a child and went back for the first time in 10+ years and it was exactly the same as it used to be. I used to find the Egyptian section so scary as the lights go on as you go round the exhibit, it's a lot of fun for kids. Some of the 'have a go' features could do with some TLC.

I needed to pass time and found this peaceful gem of history of the local area. Very informative displays and lovely friendly atmosphere. The coffee was also great.

Loved it. Walked in the grounds only. Nice to park for free and into the museum also. The grounds need some work as they have been unattended as of late, so I hope that they will be restored to their former glory soon. Will be back for another visit.

A lovely piece of history, great for the kids with clubs and activities running throughout the School holidays. Lots of topics throughout the museum which are condensed enough to keep kids interested. Lots of great historical displays and artifacts. My children loved the mummy leg and the enormous dolls house! There is an activity room with books bricks, dressing up displays ect which was lovely to sit and relax in while the children played. There are toilets and refreshments and a lovely little gift shop that has affordable little treasures. My children spent a pound each and were happy with their gift. Staff were very lovely with the children and very patient. Thankyou for a lovely afternoon.

A lot in a relatively small museum. Several very different themed rooms with lots of local, but also world wide history, especially a whole area on Egypt with actual artefacts cleverly displayed with great write ups,if you take the trouble to read. The building itself is very interesting architecturally. Great for children and adults. Best wishes from Paul.

Really enjoyed visiting the museum with my niece, and then visited again not long after with family, the staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, lots to see in each room, and amazing little gifts to buy. Highly recommend x

Took the grandkids to visit. The place is amazing and free. Just paid for the activities, but at Β£1 an activity a bargan, kept them entertained throughout the time. Staff were great, helping my grandson find the clues. The place is set in expansive grounds so grandkids were able to run around and explore. It's definitely worth a visit.

Loved our visit to Bagshaw Museum. Not the largest of places but plenty to see and interact with. The staff were absolutely lovely, very friendly. Also visited the butterfly house whilst we were there and that was great too, run by volunteers who are clearly passionate. The woods on the grounds was fun to walk around and the children loved exploring. Highly recommended for a FREE day out.

Been coming here since I was a child and it still has the charm. What kid doesnt want to be creeped out by the egyptian mummy. Lots to explore for little ones and I would recommend bringing a sketch books for older children as there is some awesome things to document and draw. The gift shop is cool and fairly priced too. Would take a baby carrier for under 1's.
