(Detailed review below) Food ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Atmosphere ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Accessibility ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cost ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Service ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Entrance is free (including for the Golden Mummies of Egypt exhibition) but a donation is encouraged. The new extension is pretty good and the highlight, the mummies exhibition, is really nice and fascinating; you do have to book for tickets to enter the mummies exhibition but you can do so at the museum. However, you may want to book in advance if you think that it's going to be busy (i.e. weekend). The new South Asia Gallery and Chinese Culture Gallery are also welcomed additions to the recently refurbished museum. There's certainly more to see now. The Museum Shop has some really nice things on sale (including items for kids). The cafe is okay but I would like to see more food options (they do have a small area outside to sit if the weather is good). Overall, this is easily a nice day out for individuals, groups or families. Do plan ahead if you're visiting during peak periods.

It was really nice to be there… A very well managed and maintained museum. There is a lot to do there for children and adults. The dinosaur section is the best. It all takes you to back in time and helps you visualise how it would be back in those times. I guess its about your imagination powers too. I really enjoyed!

A fascinating museum with several floors with different parts, such as animal fossils, aquatic animals, dinosaurs, etc. It also has various freeze-dried animals and some living Harlequin frogs that are unique. It is one of the largest shells in the UK, with extensive collections of birds, eggs, bryozoa (small marine animals), and a very diverse collection of specimens preserved in spirit. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a lot of fun with the family.

There may be a queue on a Saturday afternoon, but it goes quick. It’s free to enter. The Manchester Museum is a great place to bring the family. Newly refurbished. The centrepiece is the replica T-Rex skeleton. Take a look at the small Egyptian exhibit while you’re there. Grab a coffee from the museum’s trendy cafe on the way out.

The Manchester museum is an amazing experience that I highly recommend for all ages. Me and my husband visited the new/refurbished Egypt exhibition first and it was brilliant. It's free to enter but you need to book tickets. Booking the free tickets were very easy to do and the staff were very helpful. There's two reasonably priced cafes with a selection of cake and sandwiches and a seating area for people to bring your own food. Plenty of parking in the area and bus links are amazing. The building is easy to find and the grounds were beautiful. They handed out maps and the volunteers were so friendly and helpful! We spent 3 hours exploring. Lovely gift shop on-site. The only thing that let it down was there was nothing to help visually impaired people.

The museum is smaller than I expected, but it's definitely worth a visit. The ground floor houses a stunning collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including numerous mummies. Upstairs, you'll find the East Asia Museum, with a focus on China. On your way to the taxidermy collection, don't miss the fossils, some of which are millions of years old, and the dinosaur skeletons on display downstairs. And don't forget to check out the Vivarium on the second floor, where you can see live animals

We travelled to Manchester by train, great service and relaxing. My Grandson (8) enjoyed the Museum experience far more than I thought he would as did I. Free entry but a few people were a little confused with gaining access to the Egyptian display as they had to download a separate ticket from a bar code. At first glance it looks like a payment of £5 per head is required, when in fact it is purely a voluntary contribution, as you find out when you get to the next section. Don't be put off by a few minutes of logging in. There's no charge if you click "no donation" It's every bit worth a donation but not compulsory with pennies being short. The Egyptian section was brilliant and he was so interested that he didn't want to go anywhere else. He's learning about the Egyptians in school so to see more facts in the flesh, do you speak, it really was the icing on the cake. When I did drag him away, he was captivated by the reptile display and of course the natural world and dinosaurs. Easy to lose a few hours or more in the museum and you can always grab a snack from the on site cafe. Cake was lovely, and inexpensive. I can recommend the museum as one of the best I've visited though a little too crowded at the weekend, I will go again but on a week day. Still gets 10/10 from me.

What an amazing place to visit. First of all it's FREE. So we decided to visit the Museum today as a Family day out with our Dinomad little girl. We were greeted as soon as we came in and told where everything was etc. The Museum has soooo much to look at we didn't manage to do it all. It's clean and well presented, staff are available throughout. It wasn't too busy. They have places to leave Prams and lockers for bags/coats etc. The cafe was lovely with Picnic area in the same place to have a snack or lunch. They have interactive screens in the Egyptian exhibition, they have living frogs and reptiles to view and learn about. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to any age group.

Several interesting collections of fossils, stuffed animals, skeletons, preserved specimens and minerals. A good free museum to visit if you’re a Manchester resident. Be sure to also visit the selections of vivaria they have with tropical frogs and lizards (live ones!).

I spent about 3 hours here, and saw a lot but by no means all. The Egyptian exhibition (open until December) is remarkable, several beautifully decorated mummy cases, mummy chest coverings, and mummy masks, some jewellery, and lots of information about the history and how the pieces come to be in England. Free (but donations welcomed of course), and definitely worth a visit. The South Asia gallery is very colourful, and some murals by the Singh brothers as you enter the gallery need plenty of time to appreciate fully.

Very good museum in a vibrant part of the city. It's free! There's a great collection of Egyptian mummies and Egyptian culture in general. I loved the multicultural aspect of the Indian and Chinese culture collections. There's a dinosaur exhibition with great didactic panels. A vast taxidermy collection. Exceeded expectations!

The Museum makes for a decent day trip. The entry is free but I recommend bringing your own food and or drink because the Museum Cafe is overprice. If you want to support the Museum I personally think the gift shop, guide book and direct donation is the best way. Make sure to check out the Golden Mummy Exhibit. I also found the display of human remains unethical, the people did not consent to be on display in death.

First ever visit to this amazing museum, housed in a stunning example of Victorian splendor. Brilliant exhibitions, covering nature, animals, ancient Egypt, dinosaurs and most things in-between! Lots to see and beautifully presented. Perhaps more interactive elements for children and a right kerfuffle getting into mummy exhibition as needed to scan qr code and then fill in all your details, but these are just suggestions for development. Lovely picnic area and had tasty coffee from the cafe. Biggest issue we had was parking and being directed into bus zone.

I have been to OT to see a couple of matches, shop in the store and stadium tour. Beautiful stadium with a lot of history. However, the stadium facilities need a lot of upgrades. The stadium tour was brilliant, and worth the fee. It’s was nice to see the dressing room, and know more about what the players do before and after matches. The tour guy was very good and didn’t move at a fast pace. Looking forward to visiting again soon

It is a good place to spend the day with family and friends. It's free to enter and quite easy to navigate. You may need to register to see some of the temporary exhibits, but you can do so on your phone at the museum. There were exhibits from different parts of the world and in different categories. Science, culture, media, etc It's not as big as big as some other museums that I have visited, but I love that the displays are not overwhelming. I'd advise dedicating most of your day to visiting the museum as there is quite a lot to see.

A really nice experience for adults and children alike…. I enjoyed my time here… I would advise booking ahead for the Egyptian mummies exhibition…. There were lots to see and learn so I would advise minimum 2 hours and even that’s not enough time to go through all this museum has to explain… my favorite area was the dinosaurs… there was a cafe as well for those who want to have something to eat.

Very nice building with plenty to see inside. The coffee shop was nice and had a good selection of food and hot drinks. The staff were also very pleasant when I was last there. The gift store also had a few interesting items which was nice to see!

I took my young nephew here last month and he seemed to enjoy himself and wanted me to take him again. There are a number of different exhibitions that would appeal to all people. The main reason I decided to take my nephew here was because of the dinosaurs and fossils. The staff here are so friendly and the fact you can see staff working with the living animals was great. My nephew's favourite exhibition was the frogs they had (he didn't want to leave). They had an exhibition where tickets had to be booked which was a shame but understandable. The building caters for all, having disabled access and also gender neutral toilets and gender assigned bathrooms. The gift shop was a bit on the pricey side but the products are great quality so in a way justifies the pricing. All in all the "dinosaur museum", as my nephew calls it, is a must see if you have a few hours free or are looking for something to do with children during the holidays, that will not cost anything, unless you make a donation to the museum but this isn't mandatory.

Very well managed and presented place... Ideal for kids to visit and learn about the history...if you wanted to visit the mummies area you must book your place in advance, sometimes you can do this on the spot as there might be space available. Canteen is available on the site.. nearest paid car parking 5 to 10 minutes Walk.. it's worthwhile to visit the place for kid's and adults...

We visited here during the school holidays and have been looking forward to it. The museum itself is really easy to find. Me and my children walked through Manchester from Victoria train station. It was a nice walk so quiet because it was early in the morning. When we got there we were welcomed really nicely and the kids had so much to see they loved every second of it. They have added a lot of additions to the museum. Since we last visited couple of years ago. The Egyptian mummies were the best part the kids have said. It's definitely a lovely place to visit. After being there for a couple of hours we decided to go to the museum cafe to get a light lunch. The menu was a very posh menu lol. But we are open to trying new flavours and opted for a dill pickle hummus with flat bread, and the egg sandwich baguette which was really delicious and drinks. It was an expensive "light" lunch but we thought we might experience the whole day out fully.

Excellent museum. The V1 bus stops outside and picks up on it's route. The museum staff was very helpful. The artifacts and displays was outstanding. The only niggle is that it's quite dark in places and the info on the displays was small and we couldn't read it. Also in some rooms it can get quite warm and there's only floor fans for coolness. Toilets are clean and tidy. The cafe was reasonably priced with delicious treats.

Very nice place and you have a lot to see and do but it can be a little expensive to book tickets. It is a massive building with so many Artefacts and many other stuff, including a little park in front of the main entrance. Like I said cool but expensive.

You need to prebook your tickets in the new Covid world but this is easy on the website. The museum is undergoing a refurbishedment at the moment due to be completed by 2022 I believe. This means some exhibits are closed, the Egyptian Hall for example. Don't worry, what is open is wonderful and I urge you to visit this superb building in the heart of Manchester. A real treasure.

A true jewel of Manchester. The Manchester museum features a huge variety of exhibits for all ages. You could easily spend hours adventuring through these halls. If you are after a free day out for all the family. I'd recommend dropping by and saying hello to the Dinos. Mummies and even live lizards and frogs.

A great natural history museum located in a historical UoM building. The museum is presented very well, with floors dedicated for specific exhibits. The ground floor shows the history of Earth's habitat from the moment of the formation of the first life forms and until our times. Everything is presented in an informative way, offering a background information about the specific period as well as basic descriptions of historic events. The first floor is divided in separate sectors, showcasing a variety of exhibits with a common theme, such as "Peace", "Resources" and "Bodies". The displays combine different species and items in a very creative way. The second floor presents a variety of historic displays. From the collection of different precious stones to the collection of butterflies. The third floor is for temporary exhibitions, but was closed during my visit. There is also a small area dedicated for live reptiles, where you can learn more about the preservation of the natural habitat. All floors are wheelchair accessible and displays have enough space between them. The entry is free of charge, but donations are welcome. You can book the tickets on their website before your visit. There is also a café next door, if you want catch a break from the explorations. Right now, Manchester Museum is closed on renovation, but I look forward to its reopening next year or in 2023.

So glad the museum is open again! I have been wanting to pay a visit since I moved to Manchester a year ago. This was the first opportunity I've had to go since its opened. Firstly we didn't have to queue at all the get in, and there were walk up tickets available for the golden mummies (although I would maybe pre book for a weekend). The museum staff were so friendly and helpful, you can see they are happy for it to be open again. They had some really interesting exhibits. We were there for nearly 2 hours and didn't get to see everything. One thing I loved that they emphasized a few times was they pride themselves on not housing stolen artifacts. they communicate with the people the items belonged to, and send them back to the places they belong. So interesting and I really love that ethos. Loved our visit and will definitely be back!

Really enjoyable look around, especially the collection of hominid skulls which rested to a podcast I’ve been listening too. That said it’s quite small and not as good as the Ulster museum which I mooched around a few weeks back. That just seems a little bit more balanced and complete in its exhibits. Anyway, worth a look. Unusually it’s got quite a small gift shop. That’s not a bad thing either mind.

We had a really quick look round at the end of the university open day tour and I was impressed by what was here and would definitely want to come back when we had more time. Loved the living exhibits on the top floor showing some wonderful frogs and lizards. The Egyptian floor was really interesting and also the nature floor showing many animal skeletons and taxidermy. I missed going to the dino room but husband grabbed a photo of the t-rex skeleton! Lovely shop in the museum too. Well worth a visit.

This was actually my first visit, despite visiting Manchester dozens of times. I was pleasantly surprised. It's not the biggest museum but that probably makes it more appealing, as you can get around and see most of the exhibits in an hour or two. There seemed to be plenty of consideration about how the exhibits are viewed, especially the newer and temporary ones - from translations for the Chinese exhibits, an explanation about returning some antiquities to China, storyboard/pop art style descriptions to appeal to kids, and a description on the mummy about the ethics of displaying a mummified body. It can be a bit noisy and busy at times, if you're sentive to environmental stimulus. There appeared to be good accessibility, including a lift to all floors. Lovely welcoming staff. Worth a visit.

It's a really interesting place, with the feel of being in a proper Natural History Museum... Finally it’s back open. Such a great museum with lots to see from animals to dinosaurs arts and mummies and everything If you want to be amazed for the day then go! I would highly recommend buying tickets for the mummy exhibition as it’s really unique and also saves queuing for the main museum. The queues just to get in can be really long so buy your tickets in advance and you won’t be disappointed. Great day out.

So much more than I expected! It’s an awesome museum with sooo many cool things! 1. Its huge, so make sure you have a few hours to explore and look around when you go! 🕰️ 2. Its freeeee, and that almost feels wrong for how good the experience was! But you can always support the cause by donating 😇 3. So so many cool artefacts, things on science and tech, fossils and skeletons, archeological finds, displays on cultural heritage from all around the world, and my personal fav was the Egyptian Mummy Displays! 👻 4. Open 10am to 5pm most days, except for Wednesday (open till 9pm) and Saturday (opens at 8am). 🤗 Hope you have fun learning and exploring! 🩵

The Manchester Museum is a treasure trove of wonders, offering an enriching experience without costing a penny. Its stunning collection of wild animal and bird sculptures, complete with their original skins, provides a captivating glimpse into the natural world. The addition of fossils, dinosaur sculptures, and mummies adds depth and charm to the museum's already diverse array of exhibits. Moreover, the provision of impeccably clean toilet facilities in the basement ensures visitor’s comfort throughout their exploration. With its impressive offerings and free admission, the Manchester Museum is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike, promising a memorable and educational experience for all.

Excellent place to visit. The exhibition size is just about right, with the cafe at the top it's a perfect place for family trips. The university of Manchester is right opposite, so if you plan to come for open days, a visit to uni or whatnot this is an opportunity for you to pop in and have a look. The staff is friendly and helpful, deffo would come back again to show it to my friends.

This is the second time I've visited, the last being 2015. Enjoy walking around and looking at the collections. I don't think much has changed since I last went in 2015, so personally I wouldn't go very regularly (also don't live in Manchester). However they are completing some works to the building, so would look to visit once that is completed to see the difference.

The natural history section that is open and the live reptile section are very interesting , however a few of the exhibitions are closed for refurishment including Egyptian history. These won't be open for another two years so slightly disappointing that the exhibits are limited but otherwise a good way to entertain the kids for an hour with dinosaur bones.

A wonderful huge museum I have been visiting for many years, not too far from the city centre. A place where you can spend many hours exploring the different floors. The Egyptian section contains a wonderful collection of mummies and ancient Egyptian artefacts excavated by Kathy Kenyon. The dinosaur floor is breathtaking and a great place for young children. There are regular displays from other cultures around the world too. Too much to describe in a review as there is such a wealth of history, nature and science on show. The museum is closed presently for construction work so I am eagerly awaiting its reopening to view the changes.

  • 5/5 Md A. 2 years ago on Google
Loved it because of the projects they displayed are really amazing. It gives a clear idea about how they manufactured clothes with a premium quality and the designed different patterns on it.

  • 5/5 Emma B. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing collection of fossils of plants, ancient animals and dinosaurs. Also a whole level dedicated to animals with the top layer even boasting some real poison dart frogs, lizards, etc. We went here with my 2, 3 and 4 year old and they loved it. There were plenty of things to see and it was the most extensive fossil collection I've ever seen. Highly recommended!

  • 5/5 Stuart B. 2 years ago on Google
Had to visit just before it closes for essential work. Its amazing to see how many fossils are found so close to the area. Been here many time over the years and still find it fascinating. Should be back open in 2022.

  • 5/5 F C. 1 year ago on Google
Free to enter, full of things to see. You could spend hours and hours here! It was very busy, but it's been closed a while so a lot of people probably want to visit. They have a lovely shop and friendly staff. I was pleased to read that they are reviewing having human remains on show this year, as its always made me a bit uncomfortable personally. In addition to that, I must admit I was torn on viewing so much taxidermy as a vegan, so I would avoid visiting if that upsets you, though of course it was very interesting from an educational perspective. Perhaps something to think about in future if human remains are deemed no longer appropriate?

Good museum, but it's the same as I can remember 10+ years ago so not sure what's changed except the Egyptian exhibition that's on atm? Lots of things to look at and great for adults and kids.

Great museum with well thought out exhibitions that have a natural progression without being linear. Especially enjoyed the live vivarium room, I have so many photos of the frogs and lizards now! Would definitely recommend avoiding peak times and/or school groups if you have sensory issues.

Great experience. The museum is a great place to go explore with the kids on a day out or if you're even an adult that wants to know more about the history of our planet and universe. One of the good thing about this museum is free. No Entrance fee needed. But if you like to give donations depends on you.

  • 5/5 Kauri M. 1 year ago on Google
Great experience!! So much to see and it definitely needs a second visit,, great for kids and adults alike :) A very informative and interactive exhibition,,you can travel back in time to the dinosaur era or Else look at our recent archaeological past :) My favorite is the living eco section!! So many cute reptiles to observe

  • 4/5 Sarah H. 11 months ago on Google
We visited here to see the Egyptian exhibit and booked tickets online in advance, meaning we could skip the queues and head straight inside. It was very busy as it was the school holidays, which meant it was very hot inside, but we enjoyed our visit and would definitely go back on a quieter day so we could take our time and read all about the exhibits. My only criticism is the information about car parking on the website is incorrect; it directed us to a car park that can only be used by students on Manchester university and we had to drive around looking for somewhere else to park.

  • 5/5 Alix A. 9 months ago on Google
This was incredible considering it's free! Lots to see and was definitely not expecting the Vivarium upstairs! Well worth another visit in the future!

  • 5/5 David M. 9 months ago on Google
The museum was amazing. I enjoyed the large collection of Egyptian artifacts and the enormous natural history exhibits. Then to experience the small (but fascinating) live animals that included a chameleon who was very inquisitive topped off the experience. I arrived at opening at 10am and had about 30 minutes before it became extremely busy.

  • 4/5 isla 9 months ago on Google
Great museum with lots of great galleries on various topics. Clear that they are trying to improve the representation of different backgrounds in their museum. Only downside is the display of the dead human bodies (in the mummy section) being on display; this seems incredibly disrespectful to me.

  • 5/5 Eleni G. 10 months ago on Google
Spent the whole day at the museum with a short break in between to grab some lunch at the cafe. Very impressed with the exhibits, especially the Golden Mummies exhibit. Was also heavily impressed with the amount there was to see in the museum and the detail. Loved the comic style art and information on the first floor. You can easily spend several hours here if you love history! Will be back again.

Well how easy it is to get to the museum fro. Oxford train station. What a lovely suprise my 6yr old was amazed by everything big and small. We had an amazing day out and the staff are lovely.

  • 4/5 Krissy w. 11 months ago on Google
Wonderful museum, with a lot of good points, but a couple of things to be aware of. The diversity of the exhibits is brilliant, and our 2 year old and 4 year old were engrossed, as well as being informative for myself and my husband (dinosaurs and living world for them, and golden mummies of Egypt for us). We found the staff incredibly friendly and approachable, whether they were in the shop, volunteers around the museum or in the cafe/picnic area. The prices for hot drinks are more than acceptable compared to many places that we have visited, and with free entry, I would say that this is an excellent way to spend the day. The exhibits flowed well, and are easily followed by children and adults alike, especially in the dinosaur area which takes you from before the dinosaurs to fairly recently, and Stan was obviously a big hit. We didn't get a chance to see everything due to time limitations on our part, but was definitely worth the trip, and we will be attending again. Having not driven into Manchester ourselves before, finding somewhere suitable to park proved difficult, and the spaces were fairly tight. Big 4x4's may struggle to get in. Secondly, we found the museum to be extremely reliant on being on foot, and wasn't the most pram friendly. Lifts are available, but these are incredibly busy, and there was still a few parts where we needed to navigate a couple of steps. Pram parking is available at the entrance, which I thought was an amazing concept, but not something that would exactly work for us with a 5 month old.

Fantastic place! We loved the Mummies and Stan the T-rex. Some really interesting artifacts to see. Who needs London. Big up to the museums up norf!!! Also if you appreciate a bit of urban street art then there's some pretty cool stuff on the walk from the Circle Sqaure car park

Really well set out. Displays well labeled. There was a tour guide for the mummies section. Just book when you get there. It is a very popular place to visit. Best of all it is free although you can donate at the door

  • 5/5 Andrew C. 8 months ago on Google
Still a great place to visit for all ages, and has had a bit of spit and polish ! Currently in the exhibition hall is the ' Golden Mummies of Egypt' exhibit, there til the end of the year (23). The South Asian and China galleries are an interesting, slightly more modern take. Whole museum kept an active and not necessarily historically oriented nine year old engaged for best part of 4 hours 👏 Note to none 9yr olds tickets are required for exhibition hall although free- involves qr codes and smartphones unless you book on computer before arrival ! 😐

  • 5/5 Paula T. 7 months ago on Google
Excellent day out for the family with plenty of exciting and interesting exhibits..from ancient Egyptian mummies to beautiful dinosaur fossil collections. The museum also hosts a live reptile and amphibian area along with various childrens activities and workshops, check the website for details of what's on offer. The museum is free to enter but there are boxes to make very welcomed donations. There is an area for packed lunches and a cafe as well as an extremely expensive gift shop. No parking on site. The nearest is about a 15 min walk away. Be warned many of the surrounding roads are bus and taxi access only with penalties in place!

  • 4/5 Kit E. 8 months ago on Google
It is free to visit but I would recommend booking a ticket in advance to ensure no or shorter wait. It is free to book a ticket and can be done online. Fantastic exhibitions with lots of signage to tell you everything about each artifact. Great coffee in the cafe! Dinosaur exhibition felt a bit bland compared to the other exhibitions. It was very busy and warm when I went unfortunately. Gift shop didn't really have much of a selection. Only a few affordable knick knacks and then expensive handmade items, which are great if that's what you're looking for but not so great if you want a little trinket to remind you of the trip.

  • 3/5 Kasim K. 7 months ago on Google
This place is well organised you will find different sections for everything. You will be aware of lots & lots of animals that exist or existed in the pre historic period until now. There is Egyptian mummy, which is well preserved by the team. Some of the reptiles that I have seen for the 1st time. There is a whole section of Asian things, dinosaurs, and lots of activities to do here on the top floor. I love this place and it is a good educational visit for kids & youngsters.

Welcome to Manchester museum. Here you'll find a variety of history such as, Egypt/Sudan, fossils and a very large taxidermy section (two whole floors in fact.) The Manchester museum is also home to a very interesting vivarium. I'd heavily recommend taking a trip to this museum. There is also a nice little shop to visit at the end.

Great museum! We got to visit mummies of Egypt this time. It has a lot of historic artefacts and so many dinosaur fossils. our son was so fascinated by all the things that he saw in the museum. It's well maintained and easy to navigate through. The shop is good too

Had a great afternoon here. There is so much here for all ages from Egyptian mummies to live frogs and lizards. The dinosaurs are amazing. The museum shop has some lovely gifts. We were a little disappointed to find that the cafe only seemed to have a vegetarian menu.

Beautiful building in its own right ,lots of stairs but lifts also available. Great lockers to use on ground floor for refundable £1 . Great exhibits which can be seen really close up . The Egyptian displays are stunning . Really busy half term day .but loved it

An amazing museum with interesting exhibitions from full dinosaurs to a stuffed tigon, asteroids to live chameleons! The Egyptian mummies exhibition was very atmospheric, and the staff friendly and low key. An excellent space that was enjoyed by our whole party of 9, and we'll definitely be back.

Excellent museum with lots of impressive exhibits. Its layed out over three floors and they are easy to navigate. Lift access is available and there is a choice of two cafe's with one serving food. There is also an indoor picnic area with lots of seating. The museum is all free entry but online booking is advised for the golden mummies exhibit. Overall a wonderful experience was had and the museum is a great place to spend 2-3 hours and the children loved it.
