What an absolutely amazing experience, the guides are truly passionate about everything that has been discovered and the actual Tour through the Viking settlement is truly remarkable with incredible eye, ear and nose for detail. Came out of here with so much to smile about. Worth every penny and I highly recommend others to go.

Not originally part of my itinerary but so glad I went! Didn't know anything about the place so everything was a pleasant surprise. A bit of a queue but the ride was really well designed and brilliantly showcased the everyday life of the vikings. Definitely something which would appeal to all ages Near the end the exhibits were great as well, especially the detailed analysis of the skeletons

It's now a ride. Which is good fun and a good experience. If you have small kids you get round it very quickly as they won't look at the displays. We spent about 30mins here. Note that if you are an English heritage member you can get a discount.

This was a fantastic attraction to visit, with stairs or a lift to enter straight away from the suitable reception with nice staff! The glass floor was excavations is wonderful in the first room, where black and white imagery depicts the area in olden days beautifully. What follows on the ride is a fascinating experience, telling stories from back in time and going through the moving settings! The artefacts are incredible too, giving an insight into how people lived way back then.

Great! Lots to learn from viking history. The figures (people) move & talk. Easy to access for everyone as you sit for most part. The museum bit at the end however could be a little bigger & doesn’t show everything about the ‘Nordic people’ only coins & different materials. Also, there is a lot of people trying to get, but once you buy a ticket it is valid for a year! Which is great & saves money.

It’s worth stopping and it provides some incredible history about the area. It is a unique way to learn and experience the history. The start with a short talk where you can see through glass on the floor to understand what they discovered then you get on a ride which takes you through recreated villages. I liked that they didn’t put other people in the same ride car with us. There was a funky smell on the ride. Luckily we had our masks on. After the ride you can look at artifacts. I particularly like the (real) guy who sits quietly plays a replica instrument. I would recommend swing this if you have time to spare in York .

The JORVIK centre provides a unique perspective on the Viking era and what has happened not only nationally but in York specifically. When we arrived we were quickly bought in to the downstairs area, and asked not to walk on the glass, but to make our way around to the other side to have a talk off the member of staff. Prior to our arrival this member of staff had already started talking to another couple, and we only really got half of the story. We just kind of thought that was okay, and went on to the ride. The ride was good, you found some great information out. Then you enter a room with some display cases and various items for you to look at. For me though... this wasn't the best. We had paid for a Souvenir guide that we were never given to start with. In my opinion the ride should have lasted longer, as sometimes you seemed to be moving past things before you could really process what was happening. There was information on a tablet like screen in front of you to look at at the same time as the ride itself and it was just difficult to appreciate everything. When you got to the final room it felt (in my opinion) that the general perception was 'this is what we feel happened... but it might be something else.' Which I appreciate is to give room for historical inaccuracies. I just felt by the time I left I hadn't actually experienced something that I was paying for to the full extent. Perhaps this was because I had booked on a quieter day and the staff were trying to see several time slots at the same time, but I just generally felt this could have been better.

Fabulous! Wowed what a surprise! We seen this was one of the most visited attractions so here we go! We booked as this can be very busy right in the heart of the stunning beautiful and historic city of york! The train ride surprised us! About 20 minutes take you through a brilliant and very realistic tour of the Viking age! Truly amazing and definitely worth a visit! No parking as it’s right in the Center! But don’t let that put you off as plenty of parking available in York.

Amazing experience will definitely recommend to visit, didn't get ticket in advance so had to wait 20 minutes but I was happy with it. People that are working inside are very helpful and knowledgeable. Going through time and different houses of Viking tomes was memorable and very educational. Ticket is £15 and is valid for 1 year so you can come back as many times as you like. Will recommend for everyone if visiting York

The Viking centre is well worth a visit,it's in a great position with two outside coffee shops to choose from if you wish. The viking clad staff help you through the queues and into the building.Straight into a huge room you step onto glass floors so you can see everything underneath from old stone rooms to gardens and even a viking loo.The next part of the tour is amazing with cablecar like vehicles that take you around a viking village that has moving people, cats, dogs and even eels.It shows you how these people lived, worked and sold there Ware's.They look so real there eyes seem to follow you round and you expect someone to leap out from where there standing.A great journey around with stereo sound on every seat explaining everything you need to know about the history of the Viking people.End up in the gift shop, all very interesting.

It is very astonishing. I learn a lot about viking era and how do they lived their life. However, if you don't really like historical stuffs, you will be bored there. Entrance fee is around £15/person for 12 months. You can also buy their passport which a pass to get to some of the other places (suggesting to buy this only if you stay longer in York) The queue time is quite long but still bearable to me. If you buy the ticket in advance, you won't face the queue.

One of the best things to visit whilst in York. Reasonably priced and suited for both adults and children. Gives you an amazing insight into viking heritage and how they unearthed the actual viking site. The ride in the carriages that takes you around the village was very innovative and fun and you can select various languages for the commentary for tourists. The exhibition is very detailed after the ride and depending on your pace, you can be in there for at least 2-3 hours. You can revisit with your ticket throughout the year which was a bonus!

This is a great experience, especially when visiting for the first time. It's worth buying tickets in advance to avoid waiting, but it's not essential. The staff are excellent and really add to the experience, guiding and providing interesting details. The 'ride' is like going through a film set. The scenes are great and align with the narration. The characters are animated and have some pretty realistic details. It can lack appeal for return visits, but hopefully they have scope to reinvent areas.

Absolutely stunning museum based on the Vikings at York. Superb ride through a village with great info and set pieces, highly informative and fun at the same time. Good for all ages with a kids or adult option on the voice over. Large displays of artifacts and relics after the ride plus a brilliant gift shop at the end!! What more could you want? Good value and highly recommended.

Excellent place to visit with a excellent and very knowledgeable tour guide. The ride wasn't working which is better as we got the chance to view the exhibition close up.

I didn't know what to expect fully, apart from a museum, so I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered there was a ride which took you through a full reconstruction of a the Viking settlement upon where the centre is now. So many details, excellent animatronics, and a clear and detailed spoken guide telling you facts and information. After the ride, you get to go through the museum to look at the artefacts found in the digs. There is also a lovely gift shop at the exit. Booking in advance is highly recommended to ensure you get in, especially during busy periods. You can also save on a duo ticket with DIG and even more so with a Passport. Your ticket is also valid for a year!

Great place to visit for all ages. You can experience how people in the age of vikings lived in York. I was impressed how the robots, including a rat, seemed to be so real. I really enjoyed the tour in a "gondola" type vehicle that took us on a tour around a medieval village. You can even smell the food, hear them talking, and sign. It's a great experience. I highly recommend it.

Brilliant. The ride in carriages that take you around the village was very innovative. Great idea. The commentary was excellent. The exhibition once your ride was over was very well structured and very interesting. Not to much of it either so no chance of getting bored with it all. Good few hours and well worth the visit.

Not into museums. Was surprised my daughter booked us a visit. So glad she did. Was fascinating. Glass floor showing excavations, and the ride around reconstructed viking homes and businesses, with commentator giving loads of info. Afterwards a look around glass cabinets with tools, money and skeletons (brilliant description of age at death and ailments they would have suffered from!) Well worth a visit.

Really fun and educational! It was fascinating to see such well preserved items and also the skeletons which they have was just mind-blowing. I also just wanted to express some appreciation to the staff who were working there this afternoon. They were so friendly and kind. I especially liked the member of staff who explained the coins to me and showed me a really goofy looking king on a coin. It's really lovely to see someone be so passionate about their job and the history of the area! 😊 Thank you to whoever he was, you made my day!!

We went there with absolutely no expectations, but the experience just blew our minds. The ride through the village sets was quite good, although I wished there would be a stop between sets explaining what's going on as you're trying to catch up with the audio and visuals it could get a tad bit overwhelming, but this is just my opinion. The museum at the end of the ride was nice too, as it did have artefacts found at that site itself. Some staff were really helpful in providing extra information, which we really appreciated. Overall, it was a really nice experience.

We were able to walk in which was great because we didn't pre-book. It was an interesting visit, but it smelled quite badly which was a huge turn off for me. We couldn't wait to get out. The ride was really cool... the people and animals looked so life-like. It could have been a really great outing but we couldn't spend much time looking at everything and just wanted to be out in the fresh air.

Been some years since I visited Jorvik, was worth the return trip. Well organised in getting into the centre. Would advise pre booking tickets. Quirky little cars to take you around the set, with audio during the tour. A great job done giving insight in Viking life in York. Finishing up in the museum displaying some fantastic finds during excavation of the sight. Definitely worth a visit to discover part of York’s interesting past.

I've been here more than 4 times and take all of my friends to it. The Jorvik museum is a pleasure to visit! The ride around old Jorvik is my favourite part. It's wonderful to experience what York was like back then, especially through the reaction of the settlement and stories about what the residents lives looked like then.

More suited for children really. Interesting being so much underground but personally would have liked a more detailed video experience about the dig rather than the chair ride. Great for kids but not enough detail to want me to go back again

One of the top things to do if you are Visiting York. Totally worth it ... Gives you a glimpse of rich Vikings history. And the tour inside the vikings with my family was the best thing of the trip. I was amused by the complete set up, it gives you a real look and feel, especially the old smell of the place.:) :)

Fantastic attraction. Showcases the amazing history of Viking culture in the area. Tells a great story of the actual day to day life during this time period and how Viking settlers were very much the same as others. Very well preserved historical artifacts and the glass floor excavation display is phenomenal. The showmanship is also very entertaining with staff in costume and an animatronic ride. The staff are friendly and accommodating.

Great place to visit whilst in York. There is a 15 minute ride which takes you through 10th century York including sights, smells and sounds. What’s impressive is the state-of-the-art animatronics. The innovative touch screen displays in other parts of the building are also well thought out. The live demonstrations were interesting along with the knowledgeable staff who were dressed in theme. The content labels were a good size for easy reading. The ticket options were a bit confusing however you can use the ticket again for up to a year.

This is a short experience (30-45min) that brings to life how the vikings lived in the Coppergate neighbourhood. The animatronics are astonishing and the quality of the narration is excellent in several languages. If you expect a museum, this is not the place. The 'museum area' is fairly limited but easy to follow and well explained. Great experience overall but a bit pricey.

It was nice to sit and take in the information on the ride. Especially after all the walking we have done in York. Bit of a bottleneck when you get off to look at the artifacts. But worth it if your genuinely want to read the info and look at the items properly. We enjoyed our visit very much. Lots of knowlegable staff to ask questions that are more than happy to share the stories.

Love this place! Hadn’t been here since I was a kid but came with my partner today as he’s never been to York. We loved the ride and the narration of Jorvik’s history and how the people lived. My partner is deaf so I was extremely happy that the video with the narration had subtitles and so many visual aids around the museum. It’s so important that places like this are accessible to everyone! We had a great time here!

The museum is situated opposite another entertainment centre, has a long queue but only actually took about less than 5 minutes to get in. It was raining but we were not offered umbrellas, even though they had lots to give out in the gift shop which we realised at the end of the museum. Overall a really cool collection and the staff were very knowledgeable. It is unbelievable how we know so much about the Vikings and you can learn about them too! Also quite like that the museum will let you go back all year with one ticket. Not many places do that, so if you're a local or a big viking fan then that's a bonus if you'd want to go back!

It's an animatronic ride! The ride takes you through the artifacts/history of the vikings found on the site and was very educational and entertaining. I felt like I was in Disney World in a good way. The only downside is there is a strong olfactory experience which I plugged my nose for.. the ride has a bench seat with a lap bar so you can sit comfortably. There are museum exhibits as well. Book in advance.

This today was not at all what I expected which I loved! The visual experience of the Viking town and the day to day lives whilst sat being shuttle bussed around was just brilliant. The finds and the quirks too are interesting (where else would I find a Viking poo) I would advise to book and the queueing system can be quite lengthy. My 1 star deducted it for the gift shop it had some lovely things in there but very pricy. This could be reduced as some of the items are way cheaper elsewhere these are not one off finds.

Popped in on a whim, during a visit to York. It's been 30 years since I had last visited. No queue of a Thursday lunchtime. Fairly quiet inside. The rides have been modernised and the animatronics, with individual guide, are well presented.

Wow! There's a ride. It's like a ride through a viking village with narration. Wax figures were great, buildings were great, models were great. Before and after, there's an opportunity to view various artifacts. The staff, both those dressed in character and those that weren't, we're friendly, well humoured and helpful. My daughter and I both enjoyed it.

Brilliant train ride through a history of their village life. Created by archaeology dig. The actual site can be seen beforehand and explained by staff in costume. The moving models are amazing. You think that they might speak. Definitely go yourselves.

The Jorvik viking centre was fantastic! The staff are so informative and had soo much time for my young kids (4yo & 9yo) explaining all the artifacts. The ride is very interesting and gives you a real insight into the Viking lifestyle. I would highly recommend it.

Such an awesome educational experience to learn about the vikings… the staff dressed as vikings explaining about how the vikings lived and also the museum exhibit after the ride was also amazing. Would definitely recommend this experience if you ever visit York.

  • 4/5 Amy P. 8 months ago on Google
I went to the Jorvik Center about 10 years ago, and it was great. Again, 10 years later, it was very good. Make sure to only get there 10 - 15 minutes before your booked time slot and book in advance. Tickets run out very quickly. The buggy car tour is about 20 minutes long and is a very cool experience for families with small children and for the adults. There is a museum with artifacts after the car tour, which also takes about 10 -30 minutes depending on how fast you read. Very interesting and a great 1 hour long activity for the whole family in York.

Absolutely worth a visit! The 2 faces that have been reconstructed from skeletons that were found are amazing! Learning about how the river Ouse was re rooted and how they lived in York back in the day- all great!

A good 30 to 60 minute experience in the heart of York. Time will vary based on how many times you've visited before and how engaged you wish to get with post ride experience exhibit. On entry their Covid controls were spot on however in the post ride this breaks down but this is down to individuals not Jorvik. Maybe a bit pricey but a truly unique experience and re-entry is free for 12 months.

  • 5/5 Ray T. 1 year ago on Google
Well worth waiting to go in. I've been round it twice in a month. The history of the dig is in the first section and is very informative. Next the ride around the viking village is superb with good narrative for each section. The smells are good as are the layouts. The last part after the ride is the museum of all the artifacts that were found on the dig. I really enjoyed the whole experience. Twice 😁

Overall really good experience, arrived a few minutes late and was relieved to find that this was no problem. Additionally the ticket is valid for a year so great value. A fun hour spent finding out a but more about viking presence in the city via a sit down ride and then a short museum section. Staff were very knowledgeable and engaging.

Staff were absolutely fantastic, the ride was very unexpected and very educational. I'd highly recommend this if you're visiting as a tourist. I've unfortunately had to knock down an otherwise perfect score, as we couldn't find the world's largest fossilized poo, which was promised to us early on in the tour 😂

Brilliant experience. Recreated Viking village which you tour on a ski lift of sorts while listening to a voice guide. Staff really enhance the experience by being knowledgeable and are dressed the part. Once the tour of the recreated York is done you get to see the artefacts they found and learn about their uses in the Viking age. Don't miss out on this whilst you are in York!

What a lovely ride through an actual viking village. I didn't even know it would be an immersive journey likw this! The attention to detail was great! So much to see. My hobby as a teenager was viking age reenactment that based on archaeological findings and knowledge based on scientific research, so I found this recreation to be extremely well-made and captivating. Very well done audio explanations on english and even in finnish! Only slight minus comes, that it was really hard to hear the interesting ancient language samples spoken by the "villagers" as the audio explanation was always speaking over them. The artifacts and stories after the ride were also very interesting, and well as the written informations. The study of the sceletons was really intriguing.

I wasn’t expecting a dark ride with some animatronics and I was very well surprised. After that you also have a museum but it’s very small. In general the attraction could last longer. At least the museum part could be bigger. But I enjoyed the visit a lot and I really like the efforts they are putting into the immersion. It’s something you have to do at least once!

Great experience here, we were able to walk in and get a viewing pretty quickly without having to pre-book. The tickets felt a little pricey but we enjoyed ourselves. The ride was nice, felt fun and educational at the same time and it was fascinating to see how Viking settlements would have looked like. The exhibits were also very interesting and informative, giving some local history about Jorvik alongside world history with regards to the Vikings and trade etc. The guides are also really enthusiastic and passionate about what they discuss too, which is amazing!

Great place to visit. Very informative and some great things to see while in there. Loved how it’s on a cart that takes you round with the speakers built in. Only thing I think is the price of the gift shop is expensive for what you get. Staff are great though and very helpful gets very busy so pre book to avoid disappointment.

Really fun experience, learning about vikings and going through real viking artifacts, houses and learning about how they lived. I would fully recommend this for anyone interested in vikings. The gift shops prices are a lil extortionate though! Especially since you already spend a fortune for admission.

The manager on the door is the nicest person working here and sets an expectation that the experience is going to be great. Unfortunately it falls short. The computer system was down so as there was only 1 desk available to process tickets, the wait was about 25 minutes. The ride was unexpected, informative and the best part about this place. It had me intrigued and keen to learn more as we ventured through the rest of the experience. Unfortunately, the museum was overrun by screaming kids and completely over crowded. It was hard to stop and read any of the information or even get a look in at any of the digital screens. I appreciate that the tickets are valid for 12 months however unless you are a local, I doubt you will have time while in York, to revisit. Maybe there is an opportunity to run an adults session time, perhaps in the evening. The authenticity of the staff dressed in character was diminished by some of them wearing face masks. It's a tourist trap more than anything and not something I would recommend.

  • 4/5 Caroline B. 1 year ago on Google
Possibly the best museum I have ever been to! So interesting and informative. Interactive mostly and you sit in a car which takes you round a recreation of a Viking town. Before that you can walk on a glass floor over actual Viking finds!! So good 😊 Lots of information on everything and staff dressed as Vikings who demonstrate things like coin making. My only negative opinion would be that they could have shown more about the Vikings being warriors. Ticket lasts a year so worth it just for that. I will return.

I really didn't know what to expect. I didn't research this place beyond saving it on Google Maps. But it exceeded many of the museums I have ever been to. This was a very unique experience and the gifts you could buy were the best priced good quality gifts I have seen in YEARS. Keep this place going!

Booked online for Jorvik, you have to wait to get your cart to go round the main attraction but the place you wait has a really cool glass floor and plenty of things to see. Really enjoyed the ride round and you get audio to explain things from the head rest and there's a child's version of descriptions for the kids. After the journey round there's more things to see and you can have a traditional coin made up for you at £2. The gift shop is well stocked if not a little pricey. Well worth a visit.
