Great place to take the kids....and it's free!! Take some 5ps and 20ps for old vintage games. Sometimes they have special events like Dr Who, Vintage TV shows and vintage computer games....so keep an eye out

Fabulous museum and totally free, even has some parking. Spent well over an hour looking around. Didn't realise Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) was from the area. Nice place to spend some time. We're pleasantly surprised.

Splendid city and regional museum that shows over 500 years of city history from nautical, silversmithing, and even saxon artefacts. The museum has a special exhibit on all things Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and shows the Pompey pride. There is no charge for admission and the museum operates on donations and a bit of National Lottery funding. Well worth a visit - especially if you like Sherlock Holmes, silversmithing, or are interested in what every day life was like in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s.

Considering this place is free, easily one of the best museums for miles. To start with, the building itself is beautiful. The Victorian style is similar to the National History Museum in London and is very impressive. The staff are incredibly helpful. The Sherlock Holmes museum was my main focus and it had a huge range of detailed exhibits. The modern art exhibits were impressive as well. It was really interesting following the museum through and seeing the Portsmouth homes through the ages. A lovely place to visit. Probably minimum of one hour but ideally 2-3 hours to see everything.

I love this museum. Its so quirky and the building is beautiful. The Arthur Conan Doyle exhibit is fascinating and the different gallery installations are a great way of learning about new and modern local artists. I always learn something new in the Portsmouth history section too. The staff are friendly, and have a sense of humour about the constant cleaning etc due to Covid. The sea pollution installation was innovative and has stuck with me - I want to find a way of making it mobile to share with my beachschool students. It's a lovely, peaceful, free experience in Portsmouth.

Six of us. Four kids two adults. Over three floors. Nice rear outdoor space. Small cafe didn't use. A good display of Portsmouth history and social change. Some. Great Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brilliant. Plus it's free. Parking possible but maybe expect to use off Street so have change ready. Good gift shop too. A new visit for this year and it was great. Free to get in. The age was great and lots for the kids to touch and play with.

Such a gem in our local area, housing so much history and culture under one roof. If you have time and curiosity I recommend giving this place a visit. Donating if you have the capacity to will help keep this important museum open and accessible for all

A steward greeted me and explained the one way system currently in place. He helpfully answered my question about photography. I had come mainly for the Portsmouth Revisited exhibition, which is very impressive. I have deducted one star because the top floor was closed. Excellent displays of local history.

Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery is housed in a Grade II listed building, which was previously a part of Clarence and Victoria barracks (already demolished apart of the Museum's building) The museum includes a display on the author Arthur Conan Doyle and his fictional creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Collection is one of the most wide-ranging in the world. It includes first editions of books, related letters, film and television memorabilia. Also there is a lovely cafe to visit at the end of the museum tour 😊

Super, moderately sized free museum. Local history and explanation of context of Portsmouth as a naval city and holiday resort was really interesting. The ground floor A.C. Doyle exhibition was engaging. Worth a visit.

We went there during half term break, they had special events for kids. Its is known for its diverse collection of art, historical artifacts, and exhibitions. It often showcases works by local and international artists, as well as exhibits highlighting the city's history and culture. It's worth checking their website or contacting them directly for current exhibitions and events. When we were there they had a craft sessions for kids. I found the rope making exhibit quite interesting and we had a chance to make our own rope and we took it home.

Such a nice Museum. It is like a time machine as it takes one back to the olden days almost literally. My Wife and I went there and thoroughly enjoyed everything inside. There is a section dedicated to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes and it was fun. Best of all, it is free. The staff is very friendly and kind.

Amazing local museum. Local history, paintings, ceramics and furniture, sea life and lots more. Also has excellent shop, cafe and beautiful garden with small play area. AND it is free, just make a donation. We spent 3 hours exploring the 3 floors and still didn't see the totality of it. Amazing place, well worth visit whatever your age as it will bring back memories for older folk and show young ones how we lived in olden days! Excellent disabled access too,- ramps, lift and toilets and staff are lovely.

Very informative. You can find the old Portsmouth in the museum. Perfect place to visit with family and kids. Free entrance to everyone. Wheel chair accessible entrance available. Lifts available on each floor. Parking on the street is pay and park. £1.9 for one hour. Heard there is free parking on the back for the Museum visitors, but I couldn't find it. Overall nice experience.

Portsmouth Museum is a great place to visit, whether you are visiting the area or already live here. The exhibitions are well laid out and show what life was like in Portsmouth through different years. The exhibition about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is really interesting and there is a good amount of memorabilia of the 1950's. The current Silver exhibition and beautiful artworks of Portsmouth are lovely too.

This is am excellent museum and well worth a visit. The rooms of Portsmouth life and history are beautifully put together. I especially liked the 1950s with a TV Playing children's programmes (among others). The art is a bit restricted - paintings of Portsmouth. Modern day art would liven it up. But, disappointed that there's nowhere for bags e.g. lockers. They are essential for museums, in my view

Entry is free of charge. Located in a nice place. There is a whole section on Arthur Conan Doyle and also for silver crafts. Number of old paintings are there. Great place for a person exploring history of portsmouth.

This being a free place to go, should give it 5 stars. There is a fair bit of information here. Nicely displayed with good facilities for all. Some old game consoles are available for all to have a play about with ans there is also a foozball table. The place only drops a star because of the grounds. Yes they look nice enough, but wit a little TLC they could be so much more. An enjoyable place, well worth a visit.
