A must visit for lovers of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The interior reconstruction of his Glasgow house is spectacular, the effect of the light amazing. It's small but the exhibition on it and it's rebuild within the Hunterian is fascinating

The Hunterian Gallery is right next to the Macintosh Museum. The Macintosh museum is not free but the Gallery is. The Gallery has a variety of exhibits from classic art to modern paintings and sculptures and performances. At the time they also had a Mary Queen of Scots themed exhibition. The Macintosh Museum is a recreation of the original house the artist lived in. It is an excellent way to get an impression of the unique style of the artist. A must see for all design interested.

We came specifically for the Mackintosh House and were not disappointed. The curation of the exhibit is so engaging, polished and authentic. Took advantage of the thoughtful senior citizen discount. The meticulous reassembly of the house interiors originally from 6 Florentine Terrace is nothing short of stunning. Mainly of interest to architects and design aficionados, the small turn out on that day allowed us to luxuriate in the rooms mostly to ourselves - such a treat! Certainly not to be missed when visiting Scotland.

This museum is incredible. Beyond that all the building is an architechtonic jewel, the collections are great. Shows scotland's roman heritage, bronze age tools and weapons, palaeonthologic treasures like trillobites, amminites and even a plesiosaurus full skelleton! Two areas specially made for children. Clean, tidy, safe and FREE!

An extraordinary museum. None like it in the UK. Hunter's original eclectic collection of medical oddities and research resources. Plus more, especially the section on the work of Lord Kelvin, the 19th century's most important scientist.

What a stunning building this collection is set in. Lots of interesting exhibits to see. We especially enjoyed the anatomical sections. May be a bit dry for younger family members.

Absolutely lovely, the staff is very helpful too, the Lady and Gentlemen that were in The Macintosh House right before 5pm were so helpful and knowledgeable about the exhibition and were very quick to answer any questions + gave suggestions - if you could please reply to this review with their names they certainly deserve the recognition! The exhibitions are very varied and interesting, definitely worth the visit, thank you very much 🙏

The Mackintosh house is very impressive, carefully restored. Shame the original was demolished. I could take or leave the art on display by and large - I preferred the collection at the Kelvingrove.

The Mackintosh House is usually what brings me back and this time I had the assistance of two extremely knowledgeable young women who were in attendance to guide my looking and increase my understanding of the furniture and design. Thank you. I then focused on Whistlers and the James Paterson, thinking that JAMW might well have lent Winter in Glencairn one of his titles, "Arrangement in Grey and Pale Blue" perhaps. (BTW, What's going on with that signature?!)

A fascinating collection that spans millions of years. From Trilobites to modern abstracts this is a gallery that spans two buildings. While entrance is free ti the Gallery, the reconstructed Mackintosh house requires a ticket, and it is truly the stand out part of this collection. Is very busy mainly with schools visiting.

Free. A small museum with a finger in most pies. A personal collection that reflects the interests of the collector, from the macabre human body bits to the beautiful gem collection. Lovely building.

Fantastic eclectic collection of objects set in a wonderfully atmospheric university building , amongst the plethora of stuff to look at theres quite a lot from the founding fathers of Glasgow University like Kelvin and Lister but most of the collection is from Hunter himself with all kinds of weird and wonderful things to look at including eyeballs , mummies ,roman signposts and giant gemstones

A great way to spend a day in Glasgow. A well curated gallery and helpful signs that openly talk about the issues around decolonialisation. And it's free!

Really enjoyed the gallery. Mackintosh House is beautiful, and it was incredible seeing the design details in person. Don't skip the main gallery, though it is definitely worth visiting.

Free entry (donations); good collection in modernish space - and you must visit even if for 10 minutes after visiting the Museum over the road. Extra charge for the rebuilt Macintosh house pictured here. (The official listing seems to link both museum in more historic space and art gallery, which is a little confusing)

I adore this gallery. It's not overwhelming and the focus is on scottish artists with an eclectic mix of "rest of the world" too. Fabulous way to spend an hour in Glasgow's west end that isn't overpriced or faux.

Really shocked that the museum has so much to offer. And well presented and easily self-guided. Someone for sure with OCD had fun putting collections together and organising the exhibition.

  • 5/5 Meedo King A. 2 years ago on Google
It's one of the best galleries as you can see the history from the roman time and passing by most of the inventions

  • 5/5 Diana W. 1 year ago on Google
The Lord Kelvin exhibits are fascinating - we learned so much about his contributions to modern technology. The Antonine Wall and Roman pillars and signposts are fascinating and provide great insight into the Roman invasions of Scotland. Museum collection covers wide range of time and topics.

The Hunterian Art Gallery has reassembled a fascinating display of early 20th century architecture and interior design salvaged from the onetime home of Rene Mackintosh. The impressive but impractical adult only living spaces designed by Rene Mackintosh in collaboration with his wife Margaret are unique and deserving of a visit.

Located right next to University Library the Gallery displays the Hunterian Art collections from 16th century to the latest. The Whistler & Mackintosh paintings are the highlights. Hector's farewell by Hamilton , the rest on the flight to egypt by Jacques Stella , Christ and the woman by Dirck van Dalen are other notable works. Another section of the gallery is dedicated to exploring Gaelic identities.

Amazing museum! It is located in the University of Glasgow, so you will also be able to experience the beauty of the campus. If you go here, also stop in to the Mackintosh house. You can walk around in the house, nothing is roped off, but the dont want you to touch anything. Really beautifully preserved. The Scotts really take care and value their heritage.

It's not a massive place but really fascinating place to visit. If you want to see mackintosh's watercolour collection it's best to check first they are not on public display for long but whilst you are in the museum ,take time to visit the Charles renny mackintosh furniture and it's well worth a look. Photography not allowed in the mackintosh but yes in the museum, Huntarian is ok but no flash photography.
